STORIES FROM THE AGENCY AGENTUR-GESCHICHTEN Der Auftrag glich einem Himmelfahrtskommando: Am 10. This view can only be seen from a helicopter: the ridge of the Eiger north face. It’s not an easy job if you want the Swiss flag to fly properly Frostiger Arbeitsplatz: Stundenlang bei -22 °C eine ruhige Hand zu bewahren ist nicht jedermann‘s Sache. A freezing cold workplace: To keep a steady hand for several hours at -22 ° C is not for everyone. The job was a bit like a suicide mission: on the 10th of January the final decision was made to make this first true corporate film for Acino Switzerland, and it was to be ready to be shown by January 31st. Normally, this would be a virtual impossibility; five to six months of production time are considered appropriate for such a project. But so be it. After all, such challenges have an appeal of their own. First, we had to think about the theme. We had already thought of ice climbing as being particularly suitable for the brand message of Acino; now we had to come up with the right location. We found it in Grindelwald, where we had already done photos shoots for this client. The director of the mountaineering school Grindelwald (see info box), Johann Kaufmann, was the perfect local organiser for us. First of all, at the beginning of 2013 we had a good six weeks of bad weather, something that is very unusual at this time of year in the Swiss Alps and in the Grindelwald region in particular. We were lucky, our two days of shooting were the only sunny days. Now we had to get hold of the protagonists, the film and photo teams, and make sure that they could make it to the filming at short notice. We found Urs Odermatt, one of the best and most well-known ice climbers in Switzerland. The likeable pro postponed his pre-booked week-long holiday to attend the shooting. Now “all” we had to do was find professional film and camera teams with the right gear and in-depth knowledge of the glaciers, the right equipment, a helicopter and a team of mountain guides for safety and support... STORIES FROM THE AGENCY 70 SECONDS FROM THE ETERNAL ICE AT THE BEGINNING OF 2013, SWIRIDOFF 02 MADE A CORPORATE FILM IN THE HEART OF THE SWISS ALPS FOR THE INTERNATIONAL PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY ACINO SWITZERLAND. 52 Keine leichte Aufgabe, wenn die Schweizer Flagge „richtig“ wehen soll... 01 swiridoff All about authentic communication 53 AGENTUR-GESCHICHTEN Dazwischen erarbeitete swiridoff 02 das Drehbuch, in dem sämtliche Kernaussagen und Schlüsselszenen verarbeitet waren, skizzierte den Drehplan und betete für gutes Wetter. Sicherungsseile wurden installiert, stabile Kamera-Standorte an mehreren Stellen von Hand ins Eis geschlagen, Sicherungshaken STORIES FROM THE AGENCY Magnificent: A 4,000 m panoramic view from the helicopter. In the meantime, swiridoff 02 wrote the screenplay including all core messages and key scenes, planned the shooting schedule and prayed for good weather. The big day arrived on the 22nd of January. Although the sky was still overcast, there was at least no fog or snowfall. In the morning we took the cog railway to the Eiger glacier, and then continued on foot to the notorious north face of the Eiger. Because there was no sunshine we shot the first scenes under spotlights. The photo team, who were working at the same time, depleted the flash batteries at breathtaking speed. Finally around lunchtime some blue sky came through and we had the opportunity to do a helicopter search for a location on the glacier for the central ice climbing scenes. We got lucky: after only 20 minutes of searching we had found “our” ice wall, on the Aletsch glacier directly beneath the Jungfraujoch, quite a bit further up from the so-called Konkordiaplatz. With ice thickness of more than 900 metres (!)and only a gentle incline, this is where the largest glacier of the Alps is at its most impressive. There is a reason why they are considered the best helicopter pilots in the world and fly the most powerful machines. The thermal lift is very hard to deal with and the air is much too thin for most helicopters. There are very few visitors on the Aletsch glacier. To reach the Jungfraujoch with the helicopter is about a 30 second flight. Now we had to be quick: while some of the film and photo team finished off the remaining scenes on the Eiger’s north face, the helicopter took some of the film team and a group of mountain guides to prepare the shooting of the key scenes the following day. Safety ropes were installed, stable areas for the cameras to stand on were hammered into the ice by hand, security hooks were screwed in and the base camp was secured and marked out using hand probes – the world of mountains is as dangerous as it is fascinating. Any uncontrolled step can end up in one of the countless crevasses, and even the most experienced mountain guides only trust their own probes. The next morning we knew that our prayers had been answered, and we were about to experience a magnificent sunrise above Grindelwald. To save valuable time some of the team took the cog railway to the Jungfraujoch and from there the helicopter to our location only a few hundred metres further on. Our advance guard took the helicopter directly to the glacier. Then the equipment followed in the helicopter transportation bag, and then the remaining team followed in several stages. Our base camp comprised an area of 20 square metres. Any step taken outside this demarcated area would be extremely dangerous because of the many crevasses, which are usually completely covered up. And there it was, our ice wall: viewed from a distance from the Jungfraujoch it was just a little hill in the eternal ice... – now viewed up close it was an impressive wall with a huge natural crack. Das Ergebnis sehen Sie hier: Our photo and camera teams got started straight away so as not to waste any precious time; after all, the shooting schedule was pretty tight. Although at an altitude of 3,800 metres and 22 degrees below zero every movement is more difficult, it is nonetheless advisable to keep moving in this ice desert. Urs Odermatt and his partner showed us their whole range of skills and our team shot the film and took photos non-stop. They created wonderful images of a magnificent, pristine and harsh world. But this is not everyone’s cup of tea – one team member suffered acute altitude sickness and had to be flown to the valley in the helicopter. And when it came to material, we also reached our capacity limits: the controls of our air drone failed, and it eventually crashed before our eyes about two kilometres away directly onto the Aletsch glacier. Everything else went like clockwork, and by the evening we had shot all the scenes, taken all the photos, compiled all important sound recordings and cleaned and tidied up our workplace on the glacier. One week and two post-production days later, “our” film was ready in a record time of just under three weeks from when we received the assignment to burning it onto DVD.
