Texts: * Kaleidoskop: Kultur, Literatur und Grammatik. 7th Edition. Moeller, Adolph, Mabee, Liedloff, eds. NY: Houghton Mifflin Company, 2007. • Kaleidoskop. Übungsbuch AND • Oh, wie schön ist Panama! by Janosch (Beltz & Gelberg Publisher) AND • A notebook or folder for work related to “Oh, wie schön…” AND • Recommended: A reasonably good English-German dictionary Format: We will study chapters 6-10 in the textbook and rely on various formats designed to foster the active participation of all students. These activities include: working with partners, small group activities, “team” projects, full class discussion, audio-visual work, and an individual essay on a topic that relates to the story of “oh, wie schön ist Panama” by Janosch. The activities will be geared toward enhancing oral and written communicative skills in German. The course will be taught primarily in German. Expectations: It is expected that all students attend class daily. Since the course is intended to be largely participatory, such attendance is required. Except under unusual circumstances, if a student misses four (4) class sessions during the semester, the final grade will be lowered by half a grade: A- becomes B+. Likewise, if a student misses more than seven (7) class sessions during the semester, the final grade will be lowered one whole grade: A becomes B, B becomes C, etc. It is also expected that all students complete the assigned work (both oral and written) as requested and be prepared for each class session!
