It is dark and oppressively hot. As we take our first steps outside
Dubai’s air-conditioned airport, our sunglasses are immediately
covered in a fine, opal-coloured layer of condensation. Welcome to
the United Arab Emirates! We are only too happy to make ourselves
comfortable in the cool air of Bashir’s car. He will chauffeur us to
our first destination in the middle of the Liwa Desert. The evocatively named dream oasis of Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara, which means “Palace of the Mirage”, lies 180 kilometres from
Abu Dhabi City and about three hours by car from Dubai. The view
that awaits us the next morning from the terrace of our room lives
up to the name. Rows of mud brick houses in the Arab style, here
and there a grove of palm trees, an organically shaped basin and
otherwise nothing but towering apricot-coloured sand dunes as far
as the eye can see. Absolute tranquillity in the middle of nowhere!

Beduinentradition der Bauherren des Hotels, der königlichen

The spectacular hotel complex in the middle of the “Empty Quarter”
of the Liwa Desert – the world’s largest area of uninterrupted sand
desert – is simultaneously reminiscent of a palace and a fort. “But we
also offer the luxury of an oasis in the traditional style and sense –
the constant babbling of the water along the paths of the resort
should remind our guests of that,” says Nancy enthusiastically as she
escorts us around the property. The hotel interior features warm
tones inspired by the setting and the spices that were once transported on the trade route through this desert territory: a symphony
of brown, beige, ochre and saffron. The design is also an homage to
the Beduin tradition of the hotel’s builders, the ruling royal family
of Abu Dhabi, who originally came from this desert region. Today
in this ultra-luxurious oasis, even the most indulged gourmet is well
looked after: the variety, creativity and quality of the meals on
offer in the various restaurants is practically unlimited. And it is
standard policy at the Anantara Group, the company that operates
the hotel, to have two to three employees attending to the needs of
each single guest at the Qasr Al Sarab Resort. Also standard are the

Arabischen Golf verbringen. Schon die kurze Busanfahrt ins
64-Zimmer-Resort auf der Insel ist ein Abenteuer – da springen
kleine Gazellen über die Strasse und elegante arabische OryxAntilopen grasen malerisch unter den Bäumen. Wir sind im
berühmtesten Wildlife-Park der Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate
angekommen. Und stehen zehn Minuten später in der imposanten Eingangshalle des Desert Islands Hotel. Der grosse marokkanische Laternenlüster an der hohen Decke wirft ein warmes

in charge of our second destination in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi –
the Desert Islands Resort on Sir Bani Yas Island (named after the
Ban Yas tribe that once populated Abu Dhabi). During a two-anda-half-hour drive through the desert the scenery consists solely of
massive electricity pylons erected on sand flats and long rows of
palm trees running parallel to the road as a protective barrier
against drifting sand. At the harbour of Marsa Jabel Dhanna, an elegant motorboat is ready and waiting to transport us to the famous
nature reserve on Sir Bani Yas Island. Visitors who wish to shorten
the trip can do so by taking a 25-minute flight that operates from
Abu Dhabi on Thursdays. This mode of transport is popular among
local Emirati families who wish to spend a weekend on the verdant
island in the Persian Gulf. The bus journey to the 64-room resort on
the island is an adventure in itself – small gazelles bound across the
road and graceful oryx graze picturesquely beneath the trees. We
have arrived at the best-known wildlife park in the United Arab
Emirates. A mere ten minutes later we are standing in the imposing
lobby of the Desert Islands Hotel. The huge Moroccan lantern chandelier that hangs down from the high ceiling throws off a warm light
in the brown-yellow foyer. The members of staff stand beaming at

den Arabischen Golf, ein leichtes Fisch-Souper auf der Terrasse
beim Strand und die Vorfreude auf eine interessante Jeeptour
durchs Wildlife-Paradies der Insel. Oder wie wär’s mit Schnorcheln, Kajakfahren, Wandern oder Bogenschiessen? Nun, wir
halten uns an die wilden Inseltiere. In dieses einmalige Tier- und
Naturreservat hat sich nämlich schon der Gründervater der
Arabischen Emirate, Scheich Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, mit
Vorliebe zurückgezogen. Er war es auch, der Anfang der 1970erJahre viele bedrohte Tierarten wie Giraffen, gestreifte Hyänen
und Geparde aus aller Welt auf «seine» Insel brachte und dank
dessen Idee eines differenzierten Zuchtprogramms heute rund
30 Tierarten auf der begrünten Insel ein neues Zuhause gefunden haben. Mehrere tausend Gazellen, Antilopen, Flamingos,
Gemsböcke, arabische Hasen und Rehe bevölkern nun das 4100
Hektar grosse Parkgebiet, während sich unzählige Delphine,
Seekühe und Meeresschildkröten gemeinsam mit den exotischsten Fischen im umliegenden Meer tummeln. Also das Paradies
für Naturfreunde schlechthin. Hat doch der Vater des heutigen
Herrschers von Abu Dhabi auch das «Greening of the Desert»Programm erfunden. Und so wachsen heute auf der Insel Sir
Bani Yas rund zweieinhalb Millionen Bäume und Sträucher –
vom Gummibaum über den Weihrauchstrauch bis zur weihnächtlichen Stechpalme! Doch nun wieder zurück in unser Reich
direkt ans Wasser, das einst als «Safari Lodge» des 2004 verstorbenen Scheichs Zayed galt und vor rund zwei Jahren zum
luxuriösen Desert Islands Hotel umgebaut wurde. Das grosse,
herrlich weiche Bett ruft!

fish soup on the terrace near the beach and the sense of anticipation
of an interesting tour by jeep of the island’s wildlife paradise. Or
how about snorkelling, kayaking, hiking or archery? In the end we
decide to take a look at the wild animals. This unique animal and
nature reserve was once the preferred getaway spot for the founding father of the United Arab Emirates, Sheik Zayed Bin Sultan Al
Nahyan, who in the early 1970s brought many endangered animals
to “his” island. Giraffes, striped hyenas and cheetahs from all over
the world were relocated here and, thanks to his innovative ideas
about breeding, some 30 species have found a new home on the
island. Several thousand gazelles, antelopes, flamingos, gemsboks,
rabbits and deer populate the 4,100 hectares of sanctuary, while
countless dolphins, dugongs (also known as “sea cows”), sea turtles
and exotic fish roam the surrounding sea. In short, this place is a
paradise for nature lovers. It comes as no surprise to learn that the
father of the current rulers of Abu Dhabi devised the “Greening of
the Desert” scheme. Thanks to his efforts, Sir Bani Yas Island is
today home to some two and a half million trees and shrubs –
including rubber trees, frankincense trees and festive holly bushes!
But let us return to our realm directly on the water, which was formerly the safari lodge of Sheik Zayed, who died in 2004, before
being converted two years ago into the luxurious Desert Islands
Hotel. The big soft bed is calling!
