60 years MAJA-Maschinenfabrik
o shape the future which is ahead of us, we need to
look back into the past, where everything began 60
years ago.
MAJA-Maschinenfabrik in Goldscheuer, in the South-West of Germany, is one of those companies whose success could be right out of the textbook. Permanent innovations and the right instinct for the opening
of new markets marked its development. A small,
regional firm thus grew up to become a company
whose products today are used around the whole world.
The cornerstone for the company was laid in 1925.
Hermann Schill senior founded the company “OMAGHermann Schill KG in Offenburg and puzzled on
machines of all kinds - the range covered dishwashers
and French fries machines up to sawdust stoves.
The chance for a real restart
In 1941, he relocated the production to today’s premises. In Goldscheuer, Hermann Schill acquired plots, a
residential building and 3 barracks buildings of a former
army base. Due to the influences of the war and the resulting economic situation, the company was temporarily closed and could not produce. In 1950, there was
a realignment – and the chance for a real restart. The
previous production range was stopped and the production of meat processing machines started. Nearly at
the same time, Hermann Schill successfully brought 3
different machines on the market – circular bone saws,
knife grinding machines and machines for crushing
of block ice which was mainly used in breweries for
cooling and in butcher shops. So the visionary and inventor
Herman Schill gained insight into the needs of the
butchers, guessing that the turn for his innovations
would come.
The hour of birth of MAJA-Maschinenfabrik
In 1955, the company MAJA-Maschinenfabrik was finally
founded by Herman Schill senior, the grandfather of
the present owners, and registered in the trade register of Kehl - the hour of birth of today’s internationally
acting company. The period of the so-called economic
miracle in Germany accelerated the development of the
company. The food sector boomed and the meat producing trade was in need of innovations. So the year 1958
brought the desired international breakthrough with
the presentation of the first derinding machine in the
world, which was soon extended to a whole family of automatic machines. The position on the German market
could be consolidated by supply contracts with DAGEMA
e.G., a purchasing association for butchery equipment.
The company developed continuously. In 1959, MAJA exhibited for the first time at IFFA in Frankfurt.
Continuous adjustments to new requirements
Continually, the production range was adjusted to the
requirements of the market. In 1963, the so-called “fine
ice machines” and „aggregates“ completed the versatile product-line. Consequently, the production space had
to be extended again – after previous extensions in 1957
and 1961 – and a new production hall with administration
building was erected in 1967.
In 1971, Hermann Schill, the founder of the company,
passed away, and his three sons continued to manage
the company. Alfred, Julius and Hermann Schill junior
assumed responsibility as managing partners and they
shared the business units engineering, purchase and
commercial affairs.

MAJA-Maschinenfabrik develops to become a German
special-purpose machine manufacturer
MAJA-Maschinenfabrik, specialized in flake ice machines and derinding machines, exported at that time to
more than 100 countries in the world. In 1974, the first
safe derinding machine from MAJA conquered the world
market.
Mid of the seventies, with the two sons and the daughter of Alfred Schill the third generation entered the
company. Since 1976, Reinhard Schill has been in charge of
commercial affairs. His brother Joachim joined him
in 1987 for the business unit engineering, their sister
Ursula Schill managed the export and mainly took care
of the markets in Far East. From 1992 until 2011,
Berthold Gassmann, as procurator attorney resp.
co-partner, took care of the world-wide distribution of
MAJA machines. In 2011, Joachim Schelb joined the
company as procurator attorney and director of the
global sales of MAJA machines.
Adjustment of the infrastructure
Again and again, it was necessary to adjust the facilities.
In 1982, the warehouse and packing department were extended, 12 years later, a new administrative building with
offices, conference and meeting rooms was built and the
metal processing department was expanded.
Since 1997, the company has been under the direction
of the managing partners Reinhard and Joachim Schill.
The year 1998 is another milestone in the strategic orientation of the company. With the introduction of the Fresh
Meat Portioning System FPS 40, MAJA enters the market
of weight-controlled slicing of fresh meat and thus opens
up another business segment.
Six years later, the follow-up model FP 100 was
launched at IFFA 2004. Still today, this machine type is
unbeatable with regard to weight precision, appreciated by meat processing plants in the whole world for
producing thousands of fresh meat portions every day.
But also in the field of ice production, MAJA was able to
launch innovative products all the time: In 2007, the AS
silo range was introduced with nine models for storage
and automatic extraction of up to 5 tons of flake ice for
easing the handling of big ice quantities.
One of the most sustainable MAJA innovations was presented to the market in 2008: Flake ice machines which
are operated with CO2 / R744, one of the most ecological
refrigerants and very common today, especially in supermarket refrigeration.
The year 2010 came along with a real quantum leap
regarding ice sanitation: The complete redevelopment of the flake ice machines in accordance with the
HY-GEN sanitation principle, designed by MAJA! It allows
the quick and easy cleaning of all machine parts entering
into contact with water. Cleaning can be made either by
hand, or also fully automatically thanks to the patented
evaporator cleaning system MAJA-SCS – highly innovative technology for improved sanitary conditions, which
were honored in 2012 with the “Federal Award for excellent innovative efforts for the trade”.
Foundation of the three subsidiaries
In the era of globalization, the market place Germany /
Europe could not be viewed uncoupled from the world
market. Therefore, the subsidiary MAJA Food Technology
Inc. was founded in 2000 in Omaha, Nebraska, in the US.

2013, again an IFFA year, was full of extraordinary innovations: Manual derinding and skinning machines can
now be equipped with MAJA-OPS, a special operator
protection system, which helps to increase the safety
conditions at work. The fresh meat portioning line FPE
155 is presented to the worldmarket and the first lines
are taken into operation in the meat industry. With the
new nugget ice machines, MAJA can offer henceforward
an alternative type of ice besides the since decades wellproven flake ice. That means: Conquest of additional
business sectors!
MAJA understands very well the technology of the future
Today, MAJA is among the market leaders of the sector.
There is a simple, but very consequently realized formula
for success behind it. Every product solution for example
is developed in direct dialogue with the customer, resulting in demand-oriented developments guaranteeing a
quick opening-up of the market.
Another example is the high product quality. Basically,
only high-class materials and state-of-the-art machinery are used, being permanently adjusted to the latest
technologies.
This reflects in considerable investments every year.
These efforts pay for the customer in daily work by profiting from the reliability, the simple handling, the precise
work and the economical use of a MAJA machine. And
most important: The name MAJA is a guarantee for an
extraordinarily high safety standard.

Three years later followed the subsidiary MAJA S.A.R.L.
with today’s location in Entzheim near Strasbourg,
France.
The adjustment to technological progress never stopped.
The foundation of MAJAtronic GmbH at Goldscheuer
followed this development in 2002. The company is under
the direction of Hartmut Ilch and develops and manufactures systems automating complete work processes by
robotics. In 2010, the first Delta Robot in hygienic design
could be presented to the market.

director about the chances of automation in meat processing.
The MAJA HD Delta Robot is the reliable core piece for
automation lines and the base of robot solutions made
by MAJA.
For six decades, MAJA has been renowned as being
specialized in ice machines, derinders and skinners as
well as meat portioning solutions. About 10 years ago,
MAJA decided to start working additonally on automation
solutions as this large field can offer a lot of challenges,
escpecially with regard to automation of particular processes in the meat industry.
However, not only each customer in the world has
individual requirements, but the product fresh meat
means for the automation engineers a certain challenge,
as meat is a natural product. All types of animals and
their cuts have different shapes and consistencies. That‘s
why automation solutions demand additonal efforts,
starting from the inspection of the objects up to the analysis of exact states. The necessary technical background
is very complex, but nonetheless the final solution must
be profitable.
MAJA sees the optimum solution for meeting the
demands of the food industry in flexible automation.
Together with the MAJA subsidiary MAJAtronic, we are
continuously pushing the development of automation
solutions for this sector, especially in the field of robotics.
The big advantage of process automation for the production plant can be seen in the economic aspect, but also
in the field of improved sanitary conditions, a subject of
great importance especially for the food and meat processing industry.
Why is it difficult, but also attractive to use robots and automation solutions for meat processing? It is difficult as
we often forget that the human worker is not only fast, but
he can use all his sensory skills to perform a task. When
developing a robot, we do not only „copy“ the human
arms. We also have to think about „eyes“ and „fingers“.
For a supplier of technical solutions, it does not matter if
we have to debone, to slice or to pack fresh meat - MAJA
is working on automation solutions allowing the industry
to improve several processes in an economic way.
Robot systems offer a lot of advantages. The proof is
their successful application in other sectors of industry.
An additional plus factor for robots in the meat industry:
The factor men is no longer a potential source of contamination! For example, packaging solutions for fresh
meat avoiding human contact allow a prolonged product
shelf-life.
When the idea was born, the most important aim was to
create a robot mechanics which complies with all sanitation requirements of the highly sensitive food sector.
The MAJA solution does not only offer a high operational
availability which is the guarantee for a stable and continous production. But it also offers excellent cleaning
possibilities under the rough ambient conditions in meat
plants.
Automation is not only a chance, but also a must for the
sustainability and the future outlook of the sector. But:
Automation means investment and a lot of decision
makers think that such solutions are only reserved for
the big industry. But even for MAJA‘s traditonal butcher
customers, the automation of special tasks can lead to a
certain relief in their daily job.

Especially the butchers suffer from regional lack of
skilled staff and urgently need solutions to simplify their
traditional production procedures.
On the other side, the challenge for the industry is to produce first-class products in a safe and economic way and
to keep an eye on the global growth at the same time.
For this reason, investing in modern technology makes
sense for everybody. MAJA can offer already today suitable solutions for both of these target groups and will
continue to develop more and more TECHNOLOGY FOR
