Mit grosser Freude gibt das Museum Franz
Gertsch bekannt, dass die bedeutende
Werkgruppe der Vier Jahreszeiten und das
neue Gemälde „Pestwurz“ dank des Mäzens
Dr. h.c. Willy Michel gesichert werden konnten.
Zum 85. Geburtstag des Künstlers präsentiert das Museum Franz Gertsch sein neuestes Gemälde „Pestwurz“, das zusammen mit
Holzschnitten desselben Sujets gezeigt wird.
Aus gegebenem Anlass wird der bedeutende
Vier Jahreszeiten-Zyklus auch wieder ausgestellt.
Höhepunkt dieser Ausstellung ist die Präsentation des neuen Gemäldes, „Pestwurz“, das erstmals gezeigt wird. Der Künstler nimmt hier, wie
bei „Maria (Guadeloupe)“ (2011/12) und
„Waldweg (Campiglia Marittima)“ (2013/14) ein
bereits aus dem Holzschnitt bekanntes Motiv
auf. Während in den 2000er Jahren Holzschnitte
auf Gemälde folgten, entstehen nun in den
2010er Jahren Gemälde, die Sujets der Holzschnitte aufgreifen. Flankiert wird das Werk
auch von zwei grossformatigen Holzschnitten
„Pestwurz (Ausblick)“ (2004/05) und „Pestwurz“ (1993). Es lässt sich so nachdrücklich
erleben, wie Franz Gertsch sich seinem Motiv
immer intensiver annähert. Die Pflanze fesselte
eines Morgens die Aufmerksamkeit des Künstlers, nachdem sich über Nacht Sahara-Staub auf
ihren Blättern angesammelt hatte. Seither wurde
das Sujet in verschiedenen Holzschnitten realisiert und nun auch in die Malerei überführt.
Im zweiten Ausstellungsraum sind nach längerer
Abwesenheit wieder die Vier JahreszeitenGemälde von Franz Gertsch zu sehen. Im Jahr
2007, damals 77jährig, begann Franz Gertsch
mit der Arbeit am Zyklus der Vier Jahreszeiten –
wohl wissend, dass er jeweils etwa ein Jahr Zeit
für ein Gemälde benötigen würde. Anfang 2011
vollendete der Künstler seinen magistralen Vier
Jahreszeiten-Zyklus mit dem Gemälde „Frühling“.
Ausgehend von einer bereits vorhandenen Aufnahme des Wäldchens hinter seinem Haus von
1994 entstand der „Herbst“. Für die fotografischen Vorlagen der anderen Werke verfolgte der
Künstler den Wechsel der Jahreszeiten während
er bereits am Zyklus arbeitete: Der „Sommer“
ist der Sommer des Jahres 2007, der „Winter“
ist der Winter des Jahres 2008 und der „Frühling“ ist der Frühling des Jahres 2009. Über den
Verlauf der Jahreszeiten vierer Jahre hinweg entstanden also diese Gemälde, die zweifellos als
Hauptwerke im späten Schaffen des Künstlers
bezeichnet werden können.
Die Präsentation der Vier Jahreszeiten-Gemälde
in einem Raum zeigt eindrucksvoll auf, wie die
Werke farblich harmonieren. Franz Gertsch beschränkt sich auf eine reduzierte Farbpalette,

auf wenige, aus Mineral-, Erd- und anderen Pigmenten selbst hergestellte Farbtöne. Bei der
Betrachtung der Jahreszeiten verbinden sich die
Farbklänge der einzelnen Gemälde miteinander,
bestimmte Farbtöne werden von einem Werk
zum anderen wieder aufgenommen. Das Wechselspiel, das in jedem einzelnen Gemälde zwischen Sujet, Malweise und Farbgebung, zwischen Wahrnehmung und Wirkung stattfindet,
wird im Zusammenspiel der Gemälde noch einmal verstärkt.
Die in den Jahren 2007 bis 2011 entstandene
Werkgruppe der Vier Jahreszeiten sowie das
neue Gemälde „Pestwurz“ von 2014/15 wurden
von Dr. h.c. Willy Michel, unserem Museumsgründer und jährlichem Hauptsponsor, für seine
Sammlung erworben. Dank dieses ausserordentlichen Engagements dürfen wir die Werke
für das Museum Franz Gertsch in Burgdorf als
gesichert betrachten – ein drohender Verkauf
ins Ausland konnte abgewandt werden. Unser
Dank gilt selbstverständlich auch dem Künstler
Franz Gertsch, der den Ankauf durch Willy Michel ermöglichte indem er seinem Angebot den
Vorrang einräumte.

The Museum Franz Gertsch is very pleased
to announce that the major Four Seasons
ensemble and the new painting “Pestwurz”
[Butterbur] has been assured for its collection thanks to the patronage of Dr. h.c. Willy
Michel.
To mark the artist’s 85th birthday, the Museum Franz Gertsch presents his newest
painting, “Pestwurz” [Butterbur] (2014/15),
which is shown together with woodcuts depicting the same subject matter. And to celebrate this special occasion, his major ensemble of paintings “The Four Seasons” will
again go on show. The festive opening takes
place on March 8.
The highlight of the exhibition is the debut
presentation of Franz Gertsch’s new painting
“Pestwurz” [Butterbur]. As was already the case
with his “Maria (Guadeloupe)” (2011/12) and
“Waldweg (Campiglia Marittima)” [Forest Path
(Campiglia Marittima)] (2013/14), the artist
takes up a motif already familiar from his woodcuts. While he based woodcuts on paintings in
the 2000s, now, in the 2010s, he has been producing paintings that take up themes from his
woodcuts. The work will be flanked by two largescale woodcuts “Pestwurz (Ausblick)” [Butterbur
(Prospect)] (2004/05) and “Pestwurz” [Butterbur] (1993), enabling the viewer to experience
how Franz Gertsch approaches his motif with
ever greater intensity. The plant had caught the
artist’s attention one morning after dust from
the Sahara desert settled on its leaves. He has
realized the subject since then in diverse woodcuts and has now also translated it into painting.
After a long period of absence, Franz Gertsch’s
“Four Seasons” will return to the second exhibition space. In 2007, the then 77-year-old Franz
Gertsch began working on a cycle devoted to
the four seasons, well aware of the fact that he
would probably need about one year for each
painting. This great undertaking has been successfully completed; in early 2011 the artist
concluded his magisterial “Four Seasons cycle
with the painting “Frühling ” [Spring].
As a starting point for “Herbst”, the artist made
use of an already existing photograph from 1994
showing the woods behind his house. For the
photographs on which he would base the other
works, Gertsch followed the changes of the seasons while already at work on the cycle: “Sommer” is the summer of 2007, “Winter” is the
winter of 2008, and “Frühling” is the spring of
2009. These paintings, which can doubtlessly be
seen as the magnum opus of his late work, were
thus made over the course of the seasons of
four different years.

The presentation of the four seasons in one
room demonstrates how the paintings harmonize in terms of colour. Franz Gertsch restricts
himself to a limited palette, to a few self-made
hues made of earth and mineral pigments
among others. While looking at the paintings of
the seasons, the colour tonalities of the individual paintings interlink, certain tones are taken
up again from one painting to the next. The interplay between subject, painting style and colour scheme, between perception and effect occurring in each work is heightened even further
in the interaction between the pictures.
The Four Seasons ensemble, which was painted
between 2007 and 2011, as well as the new
painting “Pestwurz” [Butterbur] from 2014/15
were acquired by Dr. h.c. Willy Michel, the
founder of our museum and annual main sponsor, for his collection. Thanks to his extraordinary dedication, the threat of them being sold
abroad has been averted, ensuring that the
works will remain at the Museum Franz Gertsch
in Burgdorf. Our thanks very naturally also go to
the artist Franz Gertsch, who made the sale to
Willy Michel possible by giving preference to his
bid.
