Local News – Ferrero Canada will invest $55 million to create a Confectionary Centre of Excellence at its facility in Brantford.
One hundred jobs will be created, the company announced this morning.
The company has identified Brantford as the place to introduce new products and processes.
The plant will be the first in North America to manufacture sugar-free and fructose-sweetened Tic Tacs. The
project also will increase capacity for the Rocher line of chocolates and introduce automated packaging and pallet
technologies.
The Ontario government is giving Ferrero a $5.5 million no-interest loan as part of the province’s strategy to
support manufacturing.

Local News - Ferrero Canada is investing $55 million, with help from the Ontario government, to make sugar-free
candy mints at its city plant.
The new manufacturing line will create 100 jobs.
Brant MPP Dave Levac announced Tuesday at the plant that the government is providing an interest-free loan of
$5.5 million, repayable over five years, so Ferrero can create a confectionary centre of excellence.
The investment will allow the company to develop and manufacture the first sugar-free and fructose sweetened
Tic Tacs, which will be sold across North America. The mints were first introduced to the U.S. market in 1969.
The provincial loan is part of a $500-million government fund.
"We are proud to be expanding our operations and the Ferrero product line at our Ontario facility," said Franco
Veglio, CEO of Ferrero Canada Ltd.
"We knew that Brantford was the right place with the right people to take our processes to the next level and
introduce new technologies in confectionery manufacturing."
Ferrero employs more than 600 people at its 900,000-square-foot plant in the northwest business park. Besides
Tic Tacs, the plant's other products include Ferrero Rocher chocolates and Nutella chocolate spread.
Ferrero Canada is part of the Ferrero Group, which has its head office in Italy and 16 plants around the world. The
city plant, which opened in 2006, is the company's first manufacturing facility in Canada.
Veglio thanked the government for agreeing to invest in the venture. Last year, Ferrero received a $1.7-million
provincial grant to assist with the recruitment and training of employees.
Levac said that the Ferrero story is proof of a good partnership between government and industry. The company's
decision to expand its local operations with an innovative product deepens the relationship, he said.
"Thank you for continuing to show faith in us," added the MPP, while shaking a container of Tic Tacs.
In an interview, Veglio said the company has already begun to study and test the feasibility of the fructose Tic
Tac. The total investment includes the cost of new equipment, staff and training.
If all goes well, the new Tic Tacs will hit the market within one year, he said.
During a plant tour, officials demonstrated how the current sugar-based Tic Tacs are made, then explained how
different the new one will be.
"Even though the product looks the same, it will be done in a completely different way," said one official.
Coun. Jennifer Kinneman, the city's acting mayor, said she admires Ferrero's ability to manufacture and sell
products based on three business tenets: high quality baking ingredients, unique products and innovative
technologies.
She said the city is fortunate to be the home for the new Tic Tacs. "It's good to know they're going to be made
here by us."

Brant MPP Dave Levac verkündete am Dienstagmorgen, dass die Regierung ein zinsloses Darlehen von 5,5 Mio. Dollar bereitstellt,
rückzahlbar über 5 Jahre, sodass Ferrero ein Confectionary Centre of Excellence (hochwertige Süßwarenfabrik) schaffen kann.
Diese Investition erlaubt dem Unternehmen, zuckerfreie und mit Fruchtzucker gesüßte Tic Tac´s zu entwickeln und herzustellen, welche in
ganz Nordamerika verkauft werden sollen. Das Pfefferminzbonbon wurde 1969 das erste Mal auf dem US-Markt eingeführt.

der Süßwarenherstellung einzuführen.“
Ferrero beschäftigt mehr als 600 Menschen in ihrer 900.000 Quadratfuß (entspricht ca. 81.000 m²) großen Fabrik im nordwestlichen
Gewerbegebiet. Neben Tic Tac´s, stellt Ferrero Produkte wie Ferrero Rocher und den Nutella Brotaufstrich her.
Ferrero Kanada ist Teil der Ferrero Gruppe, welche ihren Hauptsitz in Italien und 16 Fabriken überall auf der Welt hat. Die städtische
Produktionsstätte, welche 2006 eröffnet wurde, ist die erste Betriebsstätte in Kanada.
Veglio dankte der Regierung für die Zustimmung der Investition in dieses Projekt. Letztes Jahr erhielt Ferrero eine Subvention in Höhe von
1,7 Mio. Dollar für die Personalbeschaffung und –ausbildung.
Levac sagte, dass die Ferrerogeschichte ein Beispiel guter Partnerschaft zwischen Regierung und Industrie ist. Die Entscheidung der
Firma, einen Betrieb vor Ort mit einem innovativen Produkt zu erweitern, vertieft die Beziehung, sagte er.
„Danke, dass sie uns soviel Vertrauen entgegen bringen“, fügte MPP hinzu, während er eine Schachtel Tic Tac´s schüttelte.
In einem Interview erwähnte Veglio, dass das Unternehmen bereits begonnen hat, die Realisierbarkeit der mit Fruchtzucker gesüßten Tic

sich die neuen von den alten Tic Tac´s unterscheiden.
„Auch wenn das Produkt gleich aussieht, wird es dennoch auf völlig anderem Wege hergestellt“ sagte ein Angestellter.
Jennifer Kinneman, die verantwortliche Bürgermeisterin, sagte, sie bewundere Ferreros Fähigkeit, Produkte herzustellen und zu
verkaufen, die auf drei Geschäftsgrundsätzen basieren: hochwertige Inhaltsstoffe, einzigartige Produkte und innovative Technologien.
