To provide students with knowledge of and insights into the development
of democracies
To trace political, cultural, social, historical and economic aspects of the
emergence of democratic ideas, institutions, and structures
Each participating university has a specific focus:
1. Democratization, political cultures and media (Siegen)
2. Democratization and welfare (Uppsala)
3. Democratization and globalisation (Coimbra)

• 120 ECTS credits – 90 cp course work, 30 cp thesis/thesis
presentation
• 1st, 2nd, 3rd semester: Course work and modules
• 4th semester: Completion, submission and presentation of thesis
Research-oriented Master:
• Course work and thesis work take place simultaneously throughout
the program
• Submission of research draft already after 1st semester

A first academic degree (BA or equivalent) in one of the
disciplines involved or in a related discipline with a final grade of
at least „good“ (2,0; ECTS B)
2.
Very good command of English (Level C1 CEFR or equivalent)
