Die 17. Nordische Filmwoche in der Wiener Urania widmet sich 2010 dem Thema „Bewegter
Norden“. Bewegung fand auch im diesjährigen Programm statt. Wir freuen uns, dass 2010
erstmals auch alle baltischen Botschaften in Wien (Estland, Lettland, Litauen) am Filmfestival
teilnehmen. Darüber hinaus gibt es dieses Jahr ein Filmfrühstück in Kooperation mit der Bar
Urania.

Nach dem Eröffnungsfilm tritt als zusätzliches Highlight die extra eingeflogene schwedische
Liedermacherin [= „singer-songwriter“] Lisa Lindal auf. Getreu ihrem Motto “born to steal your
breath and make you cry“ wird auch der Ausklang des Eröffnungsabends zu einem Erlebnis.

“The Temptation of St. Tony” is a film about a man, who has reached middle age, and finds himself in exactly the kind of darkening forest that Dante describes. An unusual problem intrudes
upon his moderately prosperous and quiet life – morality. Is it possible to be a “good person”?
What does that mean anyway? And what’s in it for you? On his journey towards a clearer conscience but an increasingly complicated reality, Tony meets several typical specimens familiar from contemporary Estonian society and lives through exciting adventures, not without
some diverting humour. And it starts to seem that slowly, and quite inevitably, the man loses
his job, his family, and finally reality itself. Compassion incurs capital loss.
The film is a co-production between companies from Estonia, Sweden and Finland.

“Det er Danmark” - “Das ist Dänemark”
Christoffer ist der Sprössling einer dänischen Stahldynastie. Vor Jahren hat er die Familie und
sein Land verlassen und lebt glücklich verheiratet in Stockholm. Als sein Vater Selbstmord
begeht, drängt die Mutter den verlorenen Sohn dazu, die Firmengeschäfte zu übernehmen,
um den angeschlagenen Konzern zu retten. Widerstrebend und gegen den Willen seiner Frau
akzeptiert er. Schon bald sieht er sich dazu gezwungen, drastische Maßnahmen zu ergreifen
– ohne die Konsequenzen für sein eigenes Leben abschätzen zu können.

Prof. Sven Hakon Rossel spricht zum Thema „Dänen und Dänemark“. Mitwirkende sind u.a.
Chor der Skandinavistik, Pia Rossel und Kristina Madsen. Darüber hinaus gibt es eine Bildershow und Kurzfilme zu Dänemark.
Zum Abschluss stoßen wir gemeinsam auf traditionelle Art auf den Geburtstag der Dänischen Königin an.

In perfekt komponierten, ruhigen Bildern erfindet das preisgekrönte Meisterwerk von Tomas
Alfredson das Vampir-Genre neu. „So finster die Nacht” ist eine fesselnde Mischung aus Thriller, Romanze und Vampirgeschichte. Die Geschichte spielt in den frühen 1980er Jahren in einer
anonymen Siedlung in einer winterlichen schwedischen Stadt.
Dort lebt der 12-jährige Oskar, der es als Außenseiter in der Schule und Scheidungskind nicht
leicht hat. Eines Tages begegnet er der scheinbar gleichaltrigen Eli, die mit dem älteren Mann
Håkan in das benachbarte Reihenhaus einzieht. Das mysteriöse Mädchen mit dem komischen
Geruch, den viel zu dünnen Kleidern und der großen Angst vor dem Sonnenlicht, unterstützt
Oskar im Kampf gegen die hänselnden Schulkameraden. Bald erfährt Oskar das Geheimnis
seiner merkwürdigen Freundin und den Grund für die zahlreichen Morde in der Stadt. Der Film
ist ein optisch großartiges und voller Sensibilität inszeniertes Grusical einer neuen Generation.

Laura, a German wife and mother, moves to Finland because her husband has been offered a
job there. At first everything is very difficult, her husband constantly working, Laura being unable to find friends, and November not showing itself at its best. Laura is thought to be a single mother, which allows her to get to know new friends and become acquainted with Tero who
runs a music session for children at the local playground. Laura ends up having an affair with
Tero and the deeper she gets into the affair the better Laura comes to like her new hometown.
When spring arrives and it is time for her return, Laura´s life has changed in many ways.

An episode film by a quartet of young directors who capture four important moments in one
man’s life. Teodors is first a small boy playing games in the summer holidays, then an adolescent hockey-player who starts a relationship with a girl, a lonely but self-centred and manipulative manager, and finally a rural hunter of birds of prey. Yet he remains a man who is
self-conscious and unsure of his surroundings. The stories seem quite ordinary, but they are
left open-ended. The film has a wistful, dream-like atmosphere, with emotions being kept hidden, festering below the surface. The mood changes – from the child’s carefree summer in the
first film to the absurd character of the last film. All four stories are distinguished with a high
measure of authenticity and sensitivity about their insecure, withdrawn heroes.

Das jüngste Gewitter ist ein skurriles Meisterwerk, das auf sehr lustige und hintersinnige
Weise das Thema der Vergänglichkeit irdischen Glücks variiert. Der Film zeigt den Menschen
in allen seinen Aspekten voller Selbstsucht, Arroganz, Gleichgültigkeit und Opportunismus,
aber auch voller Mitgefühl, Großzügigkeit, Zärtlichkeit und Liebe.
Zwischen schwarzhumoriger Komödie und existentiellem Drama erzählt der Schwede Roy
Andersson von der Absurdität und Trivialität des menschlichen Lebens. Da ist beispielsweise
die junge Frau, die sich die Hochzeit mit einem begehrenswerten, aber unerreichbaren Rockmusiker erträumt. Oder der Psychologe, der es nicht mehr erträgt, seine Patienten mit ihren
eingebildeten Krankheiten zu behandeln. Oder der Frisör, der sich an einem ungehobelten
Kunden mit einer Skinheadfrisur rächt. Oder der Familienvater, der sich an einer langen Tafel
am Tischtuchtrick versucht und zum Tode auf dem elektrischen Stuhl verurteilt wird.

It could have been a perfectly normal day, if he had missed that streetcar... But Jan Olav just
catches that streetcar, on a cold autumn day in Oslo. And on that exact streetcar, on that exact
day, there she is. A beautiful girl in a red coat, holding a large bag of oranges in her arms. She
smiles, and as their eyes meet she drops the bag and the oranges roll all over the streetcar.
She gets off at the next stop, but Jan Olav cannot forget her. Who is she, what if he never sees
her again? The quest for the girl with the oranges leads him through winter-cold Oslo and all
the way to colourful Seville, where the air is warm, and the trees are full of oranges. Twenty
years later Georg receives a letter from his father, Jan Olav, about a mysterious girl he calls the
Orange Girl. But what can a father who is no longer alive have to tell his 16-year-old son? Georg
starts reading the letter on his way to skiing in the Norwegian mountains. On this ski trip he
meets Stella. Through his father’s letter and a magical encounter under the starry Easter sky,
Georg realizes that he and his father have something in common – the dream of true love.

A life story of a puppeteer presented through a puppet love story. Ladislas Starewitch (1882
– 1965), European Disney, a pioneer of puppet animation is one of the most forgotten film geniuses. He was called a “true Wizard” and an “Alchemist of animation”, whose wizardry originated in Lithuania. He became famous in Russia, his art reaching its peak in France. He never
disclosed his unique methods of animation - who was he? This film is an attempt to “decode”
Starewitch by using the means of his own artistic thinking, tiding together biographical facts,
memoirs, factual information and Starewitch´s own films which were informed and imbued
by his love for puppets.

David works as an enforcer in a gang of debt-collecting thugs, who show him little respect.
Throughout life he has sought guidance in Chinese kung-fu philosophy videos called “The
Higher Force”. When David moves into a new apartment he befriends his landlord Harald, a
man who David soon starts to suspect to be responsible for his brother´s death. Whether it is
coincidence or a “higher force” that is at work, David feels he needs to revenge his brother.

Inspector Glebsky is summoned to a remote mountain lodge. To the proprietor’s knowledge,
nothing is amiss, but poor driving conditions force Glebsky to spend the evening with the
hotel’s strange guests. When an avalanche cuts the chalet off from the rest of the world, mysterious events are set into motion – with dire consequences for the guests: Olaf is found dead,
and Hinckus tied to his bed, while a man turns up outside the hotel, nearly frozen. Even the
physicist Simonet cannot explain the origin of a strange briefcase found near Olaf’s lifeless
body. Glebsky springs into detective mode, but the facts lead him to a conclusion that his logical mind cannot explain. Based on a story by the Strugatsky brothers, Grigori Kromanov’s science fiction whodunit poses the question of whether the rational mind is prepared for a close
encounter with the supernatural. Top-of-the-line artistic ensemble work and Sven Grünberg’s
unforgettable musical score create a suspenseful atmosphere that is closer to classic sci-fi
themes than today’s feature films with their preponderance of special effects.

The film dramatizes the events of November 11, 1919 - an important chapter in the Latvian history: the defeat of 50,000 German troops by Riga’s citizens and soldiers and a crucial date in
the battle for Latvian independence. The First World War has ended. After many years spent
fighting in foreign lands, Martin returns home to Latvia, where his fiancée, Elza, is waiting. He
has no idea that the decisive battle – both for Elza’s heart and for the newly established Latvian state – is still ahead of him. The German forces, led by the Russian general Pavel Bermondt,
are gathering to capture Riga, and it seems that Latvia’s only hope against the Germans is the
support of the allies. But Martin is ready to fight and protect his home, with just a handful of
courageous comrades. The heroism of the defenders of Riga affirms the faith in the Latvian
state, both at home and abroad.

What would you do…if your country was stolen? In a time of war, in a country thrown into
chaos…one man would dare to fight back! The film is based on the true story of the resistance
fighter Max Manus, and follows Max from the outbreak of World War II until the summer of
peace 1945. After having fought against the Russians during the Winter War in Finland, Max
returns to a Norway occupied by the Germans. Very soon he joins the active resistance movement, and becomes one of the most important members of the so-called Oslo Gang. Among
other activities, they carry out spectacular raids against German ships in Oslo harbour. Maybe
the most well-known attack was the sinking of the slave ship Donau.

Seven chapters from the life of the pupils of an anonymous Estonian secondary school. Joosep
is constantly bullied by his classmates. Kaspar, a newcomer from the countryside, is accepted by the class community and finds himself confronted by a question: What is honour? He
doesn’t accept Joosep being bullied. His classmates do not accept his defending Joosep and
take it out on Kaspar. Though their life is hard and seems almost unbearable, Joosep nurtures
his dreams and hopes, so Kaspar thinks he can also live it through. Yet their relentless classmates are going too far, and hope gives way to desperation. The pranks gradually become
ever more serious instances of bullying ultimately resulting in tragedy – to the surprise of
everyone, including the audience.

At the heart of the film is the Koppelo family. Worn out after a number of travels, but united
and strong, this family is proud of their history. They have their share of misfortune but never
stop believing in themselves: “We are not just a gang of vagabonds; we are part of world history!” Martta and Otto are a pair of travelling tailors who claim to be bastard descendants
of the Romanovs and wander from town to town seeking work, accompanied by their three
half-witted adult sons, Hippo, Repe and Ventti. The family occasionally turns to crime when
they can’t quite make ends meet, and the boys begin turning to violence with greater frequency when Otto unexpectedly dies and Martta becomes the head of the family business.
Their fortunes take an unexpected turn when the brothers assault and abduct a man they call
Kaspar, who becomes the family’s sidekick in their travels. Despite Kaspar’s inability to speak,
he attracts a new member of the gang, an attractive young woman named Lara, but the family
seems thrown for a loop when a long lost fourth brother, Laszlo, suddenly re-emerges and tries
to wrest control of the business away from his mother.
When Hildur - a beautiful high society girl and a regular guest in the national celebrity press
- finds out that her boyfriend Jolli is about to go to jail, she realizes she has to learn to stand
on her own two feet. Hildur possessing no skills or any practical experience, tries to find work
but without success. She is about to give up when by pure coincidence she lands a job selling
roleplaying books and accessories at the local fantasy-shop Astrópia. From that moment
her life transforms. At Astrópia Hildur is introduced to a group of nerds who give her a new
outlook on life. Among them are Dagur, a translator of romantic fiction, Scat, a rapper who
makes his nerdiness look cool, the comic and video clerks Floki and Pesi, the violent tomboy
Beta and an eight-year-old wiz-kid, Snorri. Gradually unlikely friendships are formed and Hildur enters the fantasy world of roleplaying where she struts about in a skimpy outfit slaying
Orcs and Goblins, with the world of adventure beginning to blend into her real life.

Falling off a balcony, sratching your chin, or swallowing a fishbone does not hurt; but it hurts
to love. An undistinguished province town in the 1980’s. After his parents’ divorce, 11-year-old
Rolanas and his dad move in next door to same-aged Emilija. The two children strike up a
friendship. Shyness, or fear of opening-up, however, makes them communicate through the
wall, through a socket connecting their flats, or just sitting on their own balconies. Emilija’s
parents also appear to be on the verge of divorce, and the children discover they share more

Ein einziger Abend verändert das Leben von vier Freunden. In drei Erzählsträngen werden
deren Selbsttäuschungen, Lügen und menschliche Schwächen enthüllt. Agnes und Rickard laden kurz vor ihrem Umzug in eine andere Stadt noch einmal ihre besten Freunde zum
Abschiedsessen ein. Dabei kommen Dinge zutage, die das Paar in eine tiefe Krise stürzen.
Währenddessen bekommt der Bauarbeiter Anders ein unwiderstehliches Angebot für einen
nicht ganz legalen Nebenjob. Schließlich ist da noch Anita, die unverhofft ihren Ex-Mann wiedersehen kann, der sie vor drei Jahren wegen einer Jüngeren sitzengelassen hat. Mit viel Sinn
für groteske Details zeigt der routinierte Björn Runge Menschen, die sich selbst und andere
belügen, und die Konsequenzen dafür tragen müssen. Es ist ein berührendes Drama mit Stars
wie Ann Petrén und Pernilla August, die mit ihren schauspielerischen Leistungen überzeugen.

“Grandpa and Grandma” is based on the life story of the director’s grandparents who were
exiled to Siberia by the Soviets in 1948. This brutal period of Lithuanian history is told in a
personal way, as a fairytale. The story-teller is a little girl, who sees events in her own childlike
way. The visual basis of the film consists of extant family photographs together with material
from the national archive, and animation inserts. According to Giedre

discussed so much that as a subject it became undeservedly overused. Young people started
picturing the deportees as old unhappy people, with whom you would never want to have anything in common as they would make you sad. And being sad is really out of fashion these
days. We forget that young people were also exiled, even very small children; families were torn
apart. It was this aspect that interested me – the story of a family, which was very similar to
thousands of other stories. Deportation to Siberia is still a painful and complicated moment
in the history of the nation. Naturally, it is difficult to talk about, but necessary. Talk helps to
heal society.“
