A beautiful paved road makes the
circuit of the island, connecting the
city of São Filipe, in the West coast,
to the village of Mosteiros (where
the best national coffee is grown),
located in the North extreme point.
There are regular public transports
available between both villages,
departing from São Filipe in the
morning, for the price of 500$00.
The inverse trip leaves Mosteiros
at 05.30 a.m., and transports leave São Filipe to Chã das Caldeiras
in the morning and at 2:00 p.m. as
well at the price of 250$00, and to
São Jorge between 10:30 a.m. and
11:30 a.m. A round trip to Chã das
Caldeiras by taxi is about 6.000$00,
a tour around the island, 8.000$00,
to São Lourenço, 1.000$00. Renting a car for one day may cost
around 7.000$00 - 8.000$00.

Still active, the volcano on the island of Fogo is an impressive
mark in the whole island, especially if we are in the small village
of Chã das Caldeiras, located at the foot of the main cone of
the volcano. The lunar landscape of Chã das Caldeiras impresses any visitor, by involving him/her in the mystic of the landscape, with the volcano imposing itself right there in one’s eyes.

HISTORY

Discovered in 1460, the island of
Fogo was named São Filipe until
1680, when a devastating eruption
took place and imposed the present
designation of the island – Fogo.
The history of Fogo is closely linked
to the capricious rhythm of the volcano that shaped the geography of
the island, at each new eruption, by
adding new peaks to it and subtrac-
ting some pieces of land, thrown
into the bottom of the ocean.
The island’s proximity to the island
of Santiago, on the one hand, and
its agricultural potential, on the
other hand, were important factors behind the fact that it was the
second island to be settled in the
past. In the century after its discovery, there were about 2000 slaves
in the island who cultivated cotton
and were made weaving products
that were very much appreciated.
After the 1680 collapse, part of the
Fonte Leixo Ilha do Fogo
population immigrated to the neighboring island of Brava. In 1785, there was a new eruption during which
the Peak of Fogo stood up. The lava
slide down the northeast slope of
the crater, resulting in the prominent elevation where the present
village of village de Mosteiros was
erected. Other eruptions occurred
in 1799, 1847, 1852 and 1857,
followed by a century of calmness,
the interrupted by the 1951 and
1995 eruptions.
The unpredictable nature of the
catastrophes led many inhabitants
of the island of Fogo to enlist themselves as members of the crew in
the North American whaling-ships,
during the 19th century, establishing
afterwards in the USA, where there
is a significant capeverdean community.
Presently, the island of Fogo has
about 40,000 inhabitants resident in
the city of São Filipe, the capital located in the west coast of the island,
and the third biggest city of Cape
Verde.

Jahrhundert der Ruhe, das unterbrochen wurde durch die Eruptionen
von 1951 und 1995.
Die unberechenbare Natur der
Katastrophen führte dazu, dass sich
viele Bewohner der Insel Fogo im
19. Jahrhunderts als Mitglieder der
Crew von nordamerikanischen
Walfangschiffen eintragen liessen.
Anschliessend haben sie sich in den
USA niedergelassen und es gibt dort

Amid stories and dances, the people of Fogo Island are characterized by very different physical features from the other islands of
Cape Verde, such as blond hair and blue eyes, genetic inheritance
of the Frenchman Armand Montrond. In addition to genetics, Armand Montrond left a distinct cultural heritage, which is revealed
in the wine and coffee production techniques as well as in music.
Besides the local crafts made of volcano lava, Chã das Caldeiras
is the ideal place to get carried away by the sounds of the “Talaia
Baixo” dance or the popular parties that are promoted throughout
the island. “Bandeirona” is one of the most popular cultural events
of the archipelago, which is worth participating on the May 1st.

Cragged in a cliff hanging over a
black-sandy beach violently fustigated by the sea, the capital of Fogo
is a city with colourful houses, decorated with tiles made of hard
pottery, with squares and colonial
houses (sobrados) that reflect the
Portuguese colonial style with rigour. Bougainvilleas blossom in the
wooden balconies of the houses,
and from the public sidewalks you
can glimpse down at the rough sea.

Is locally known as Tchã. The road
from São Filipe to the volcano crosses, in the first place, a pleasant landscape with marks here and there
of abandoned farms and volcanic
peaks. Suddenly, however, it turns
into a very steep road, around rocky lava cliffs, ending in the ravishing
silence of the crater. The dark walls
of the volcano and the lava blocks
spread around the ground are very
much intimidating. About 1.200

people live in this inhospitable landscape, recently classified as natural
reserve.

Fogo, a space with several antique
pieces, and the most diverse types
of endemic plants of Cape Verde
are available.

It is a traditional, typical feast of the
village of Campanas, which is located 21 km north of the city of São
Filipe on Fogo Island. Banderona, or
the Flag Feast of São João Baptista,a
grassroots cultural event, which is a
mix of popular and religious activities, between the secular and the
sacred, as well as people’s superstition and their material expression
of life.Banderona festivities begin on
January 31 and always end on the
eve of Carnival.

The traditional celebration of the
Flag of Nho San Filipe is no exception to the rule, starting a few days
before the 1stof May, the day of
the Patron Saint, depending on the
financial strength of person that is
responsible for the feast, with the
sound of the fireworks and the orchestration of the corn pounding
for the preparation of corn based
meal named xerem for lunch that
is offered on the big party day on

May 1st. At mid-morning, the horse
riders gather together again and ride
through the city streets, do some
horse racing in Alto de São Pedro
and continue in solemn march with
the unfurled flag towards a place
where once there was a castle,
which would belong to the founder
patron of Nho San Filipe feast.
However, despite all these parties
are held on different dates, they
always start the same way, that is
with the ritual of pounding corn.

1. Mai, dem Tag des Schutzheiligen
der Stadt. Sie hören das Knallen der
Böller , und das Stampfen des Mais,
der für die Party des 1. Mai zum Essen benötigt wird (für xerem). Am
Vormittag des 1. Mai sammeln sich
die Reiter und führen eine Prozession mit der Fahne an in Richtung
Casa das Banderas, wo schon die
ersten Feiern zu Ehren des Heiligen
stattfand. Das Fest beginnt immer
mit dem Stampfen des Mais.
