CORAҪÃO PORTUGUÊS PORTUGUESE HEART PORTUGAL DAY 10th June Portugal Day is known as Dia de Camões, de Portugal e das Comunidades Portuguesas, Day of Camões, Portugal and Portuguese Communities. It marks the death of Luís de Camões' on June 10, 1580 which is also observed as Portugal's National Day. Luis de Camões wrote the Lusiads, Portugal's national epic poem which celebrates the rich history and achievements of the Portuguese. The Lusiadas is an epic poem that describes the achievements of the Portuguese in world explorations in the 16th century. Portugal played an important role in the discovery of the new world during this century and the legendary voyager Ferdinand Magellan hails from this proud nation. Camões’ poem captures the essence of this golden era for the Portuguese as it remains as one of the finest and most relevant works in Portuguese literature. A monument built in memory of Luís de Camões stands proudly in one of the busy streets of beautiful Lisbon, the country’s capital city. It immortalizes the character of Portugal’s national poet and is able to aptly represent the person that he was. Luís de Camões was known to be an adventurer. Among his many escapades include surviving a shipwreck in the region of Cochinchina (now known as Vietnam), and losing an eye while in battle in Ceuta. Legend has it that in order to save the Lusiadas, Camões had to keep it afloat with one of his hands, while he used his other arm to swim through the waters of the region’s seas. His patriotism and bravery are just a few of the qualities Luís de Camões had that made the nation choose to celebrate Portugal Day in his honour. Portugal was conquered by Spain in the year 1580 and saw its independence in 1st December, 1640. Since then, the country’s national day is celebrated on June 10. PRESIDENT’S REPORT Joe Alves For the past five years I have been the President of the South Coast Portuguese Association. The Association has around 250 Portuguese members and my goal is to see most of the members use the facilities offered by the Association. The Association has ten committee members who are all volunteers. We have at least one function per month and in so doing the community is reminded of their traditions. We also bake bread every Wednesday and Friday which we sell to the community to raise funds. At present we have a social worker who works at the Association for three half days a week. Unfortunately this is not enough to meet the community needs. The Portuguese community is ageing and with the majority of the elderly unable to understand or speak English they come to the Association and ask the social worker for assistance. It would be of great benefit to receive more funds to keep the social worker five days a week to help those in need. The Portuguese community holds mothers and grandmothers groups that meet every Tuesday from 9:00am - 11 am, English classes on Wednesdays from 9:00am 12:00pm and a social gathering every Thursday where around 50 people meet for bingo, card games and other games. Lunch is served at midday. YEARS AGO ...... I arrived in Australia in 1964 and together with some friends thought about organising something for the Portuguese Community. In 1968 I formed the first folkloric group in Australia, where in August 1968 we held a big function at Warrawong Hall to raise funds for Portuguese traditional costumes. Then in 1970 the group went down due to lack of a band. In 1970 several people and myself thought about founding the Portuguese school. In 1973 another Folkloric group was introduced with the children from the Portuguese school with another function being organised to raise funds for the school. In August 1974 we thought of buying a chapel at 127 Flagstaff Rd, Warrawong that was at the time being used to teach Portuguese. The founding partners considered registering a Portuguese Association, which came into effect on April 18, 1975. I then formed a new group of seniors and was the trainer for 15 years. My niece Mariana later took over after two to three years, and continued to be the trainer for some years after that. I've been involved with the Portuguese Community from 1974 to 2005 and I helped buy the building at Sr Joao Nascimento 129 and the building next door at 125. It has a distinctive tuning mechanism. It is most mainly associated with fado. Fado (destiny, fate) is a music genre which can be traced from the 1820s in Portugal. Fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor and must follow a certain structure. PORTUGUESE Varieties of fado GUITAR There are two main varieties of fado, namely those of the cities of Lisbon and Coimbra. The Lisbon style is the most popular, while Coimbra's is the more refined style. Modern fado is popular in Portugal, and has produced many renowned musicians. The technique employed to play the Portuguese guitar is called dedilho. This technique comprises playing solely with the thumb and the index fingers. Fado in Australia Fado's popularity also extends to Australia. Generations of Portuguese have migrated to Australia, and the traditions have continued. One popular Australian Portuguese fadista is Melbourne based Olivia de Sousa (http://www.oliviadesousa.com) She has sung for many years for the Portuguese communities and also for the wider Australian audiences. The combination may be odd, but it is a unique example of fine Portuguese cuisine and the imaginative resourcefulness of the Portuguese people. How to prepare the dish 1. Cut the pork into cubes and marinade overnight in white wine, salt, paprika, garlic and bay leaves. 2. Prepare pipis by soaking them in salty water for at least two hours to release the sand. 3. Drain the pork from marinade and lightly fry it in the lard in a large pot until golden brown. 4. Add the marinade to the meat. 5. Add the pipis, place the lid over the pot and allow to cook until the pipis open, about 5-10 minutes at moderate heat. 6. Meanwhile, cut the potatoes into cubes and fry them in olive oil. 7. Mix the meat and pipis with the potatoes. 8. Sprinkle with parsley or coriander to serve. An epic poem (1572) by Luís de Camões and has ten cantos. It lives from a harmonised contradiction between the action of pagan divinities (who help or hinder the progress of the Portuguese during their epic maritime voyage to India, which is the book’s theme) and the protection of Christian feeling and the expansion of faith. Vasco da Gama is the hero, Venus is the goddess who protects him, and Bacchus is his feared adversary but the “Lusitanian people” reach India, offering “new worlds to the world”. 123 1 TYPES OF CARE AT HOME Community Aged Care Packages (CACP) 6 hours a week - $55.00 Community Aged Care Packages provide services to frail aged people who require a greater range of services to help them continue living at home.
