Portugal is a country of contrasts, taking visitors on a journey

MODERATION.
The WINE in MODERATION programme is a European wine
sector initiative aimed at promoting the responsible
consumption of wine and wine products. It communicates
the message that wine is a premium product to be savoured
in moderation, and educates the public about the risks of
excessive and improper consumption. It also encourages a
wider cultural change in the approach to alcohol consumption.
Viniportugal, the association responsible for the promotion
of Portuguese wines, supports the WINE in MODERATION
campaign through its ‘A Copo’ (wine by the glass) initiative,
which promotes responsible drinking.

new flavours by wine drinkers elsewhere in the world. Here are just a few of the finest…
WHITE GRAPES
ALVARINHO
ARINTO
Alvarinho makes characterful, rich, mineral white
wines with fruity notes of peaches and citrus, and
sometimes tropical fruits and flowers This
high-quality white grape has long been prized in the
north west of Portugal, and is much planted in the
northern part of the Vinho Verde region, between the
River Lima and the River Minho, which forms the
border with Spain. (You may have met the Spanish
version, Albariño.) Its famous heartland is the Vinho
Verde sub-region of Monção and Melgaço. Alvarinho
wines are fuller in body and higher in alcohol than
most Vinho Verde, and are often bottled as a single
variety, and named on the label. These wines are
delicious young but can age well. Growers elsewhere in
Portugal have recognised Alvarinho’s quality, and the
variety is slowly spreading south.
Arinto| Pedernã makes elegant, lemony, appley,
mineral whites that are delicious young and fresh
but can gain complexity with age. Arinto is the main
grape of the famous wines of Bucelas, fine, elegant
whites from just north of Lisbon. It’s a late-ripening
grape with the great advantage that it keeps its
marked acidity even in hot conditions. No wonder
that it grows across much of the country. It often
adds freshness and elegance to blends of other
white varieties. It also succeeds in the cool Vinho
Verde region, where it is known as Pedernã. Its crisp
acidity is also an advantage for sparkling wines.
RED GRAPES
BAGA
CASTELÃO
Baga This late-ripening grape often makes lean,
tannic reds that can be astringent in youth, but
mature to complexity with age. In hotter years, or by
skilful ripening and winemaking, Baga can give rich,
dense reds, with cherry and damson fruit, ageing to
softer, complex flavours of herbs, malt, cedar and
dried fruit.Its heartland is Bairrada but it also grows
elsewhere in the Beiras, including Dão. It is also used
as a base for sparkling wine.
Castelão The most planted black grape of the
southern part of Portugal can make firm, fine,
raspberry-fruity wines that evolve to a cedary,
cigar-box character. It is at its best in the Palmela
region on the Setúbal Peninsula south of Lisbon.
TRINCADEIRA
ARAGONEZ
Trincadeira | Tinta Amarela can make reds with
wonderfully bright raspberry fruit, spicy, peppery,
herbal flavours, and very good acidity. This red grape
grows all over Portugal, especially in dry, warm
areas, but is probably at its best in the Alentejo. In the
Douro it’s known as Tinta Amarela.
Aragonez | Tinta Roriz makes fine, elegant red wines
with aromas of red fruits, plums and blackberries,
firm tannins and good ageing potential – you may
have met it across the border as Tempranillo. Called
Tinta Roriz in the north of Portugal, this is one of the
top grapes for Port and Douro table wines, also
important in the Dão region. In the Alentejo it is
called Aragonez. It is generally used in blends with
other varieties.
ENCRUZADO
FERNÃO PIRES
Encruzado makes elegant, well-balanced, full-bodied
whites with delicate floral and citrus aromas and
sometimes an intensely mineral character. Delicious
in a pure, unoaked style, Encruzado also responds
well to oak-fermentation or oak-ageing, turning out
some serious, fine, well-structured wines that can
mature and gain complexity over many years. You are
most likely to find it in the Dão region, up in the north,
either as a single variety or in blends – these are some
of Portugal’s most exciting white wines. In the
vineyard, even in hot conditions, Encruzado grapes
keep their fresh acidity and ripen to perfection
without becoming over-sweet.
Fernão Pires | Maria Gomes makes light, fruity,
fragrant whites reminiscent of Muscat in flavour –
floral and citrus. It tastes freshest when picked early
for drinking young and fresh. It is also used in
sparkling wines, and can occasionally be harvested
later to make sweet wines. Portugal’s most
cultivated white grape, it is grown more or less
everywhere but especially down the western coast
including the Setúbal Península, Tejo, Lisboa and
Bairrada, sometimes under the alias Maria Gomes.
TOURIGA FRANCA
TOURIGA NACIONAL
Touriga Franca makes densely-coloured, firm but
rich, aromatic wines with floral overtones and
blackberry fruit. It is one of the five officially
recommended grapes for Port, and is also used in red
Douro blends – indeed it is the most widely planted
grape in the Douro Valley. It is generally used in
blends.
Touriga Nacional makes firm, richly-coloured wines
(and Port) with complex aromas and flavours
reminiscent of violets, liquorice, ripe blackcurrants
and raspberries, along with a subtle, herby hint of
bergamot. It’s a northern grape by origin, Dão and
Douro both claiming it as their own, but now it is
grown all over Portugal. It can age well.

Casa Améico was established by the hands of
Americo Seabra, father, who had the dream of
producing wines in is homeland, Vila Nova de
Tazem . The project was followed by his sons who
recovered the property of the XVIII century and
built a new winery. Casa Américo now has 100 ha
of vineyards, with the oldest ranging over 100
years, planted with noble grape varieties from
the Dão region, in poor granite soil at an altitude
from 500 to 600m, the highest in Dão region.

MUXAGAT VINHOS

The Muxagat Vinhos, was started in a small
village situated in the North of Portugal in the
Douro Valley, Muxagata (owl and cat in
portuguese). We started vinifying grapes from
our quinta, Vale Cesteiros and small parcels in
Muxagata. The Vineyards are planted on schist in
various plots with different altitudes (250 to 600
m) and different solar expositions. The Grapes
are harvested by hand in september. In the cellar,
before being crushed or pressed they spend 12
hours in a cooling chamber at 10ºC followed by
fermentation with indigenous yeasts. During the
maturing process the wine is not moved in order
to respect the characther of the grapes. We
produce 40 000 to 50 000 bottles a year.

Our family has worked in viticulture and wine
growing for several generations. Our two
estates, Quinta de S. Mateus and Quinta de
Valdazar, are in Bairrada, central Portugal, close
to the Atlantic Ocean. Our hills (roughly 100
mts), are mostly limestone and clay. We use
traditional methods as part of our sustainable
viticulture. When the grapes, picked and sorted
by hand, arrive in the cellar and are treated
according to the old concept (no oenological
products at all, old wooden vats) but with
modern tecnology (robot-pigeur, last generation
press). Sparkling wine (espumante) is made by
second fermentation in the bottle method, used
in the region for more than a century.

The history of a family of the Alentejo with his
ancestors landowners, linked to Alvito (Beja), has
its secrets and traditions within the coat of arms
of the Lobos da Silveira, descendants from the
first Baron and Marquis of Alvito, in the XV
century. It was the first baron title given by King
Afonso V of Portugal. This coat of arms has five
wolves and, curiously, nowadays there are five
descendants of this family. Five young cousins
who vowed to bring the message of their roots to
the present.

In November 1941, Delfim Ferreira, a business
man of the North of Portugal and responsible for
the electrification of much of the Douro region,
purchased the Quinta dos Frades (Friar's estate).
This estate is one of the largest (220ha) and more
historic of the Douro valley. Wine production
dates back from the thirteenth century. The
entire estate is classified with letter A (the
highest category in the Douro) known for
producing top quality Port wines which are still
are regularly sold to the Port wine shippers of
Vila Nova de Gaia. In 2008 realising the potential
of the traditional vineyards of the estate, Delfim
Ferreira's great-grandsons started to produce
table wine from the best vineyards of the estate.

Quinta da Ribeira is located in Meca, and is now
headquarters of Sociedade Agrícola Félix Rocha.
Began producing wine in the mid XIX century, by
Mr. Felix Rocha, great grandfather of the present
managers. in 1991 the fourth generation of the
family recognized the need for continuous
investment in the production. Both vineyards
annd cellars have been restored. Covering several
hectares of vines, distributed between Quinta da
Ribeira, Casal do Mato, Casal Novo, Quinta de São
Cristovão and Quinta do Baracho. The vineyards
are planted in argilo-calcareous soils, in steep
hillsides facing south. We care more and more
about the environment so we work in an
integrated production system.

belonged to the Calem family (now in its 5th and
6th generations) for about 150 years. When it
started, there were neither trains nor tankertrucks, so it was designed to receive the Port
wines produced at the Quinta and at the Region's
other landholdings, and from there transport
them via barge,to the main warehouses on Diogo

In 1877, Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, owner of the
largest winemaking estate in the Douro,
purchased 300 hectares of virgin land at auction
from the Vila Nova de Foz Côa municipality. Her
dream was to create a model vineyard from
nothing, using for this the vast experience she
had acquired throughout a lifetime in Douro.
Since then, the estate always remained in the
hands of her descendants. In 1994, her greatgreat-great-grandson, Francisco Javier de
Olazabal and his children became the sole owners

After 15 years working as an Enologist, Susana
Esteban decided to embrace the Adventure of
becoming a wine producer, with the objective of
producing wines of a different character
compared to the traditional Alentejo. For over 2
years, Susana searched (Procura) all over
Alentejo for the optimal vineyards in order to
produce her wines. It was only in 2011 that
Susana was able to find the parcels she was
looking for, thus elaborating her wines: Procura
white and red, and Adventure white and red. All
parcels are unique and exceptional, originating
from fresher areas compared to traditional
Alentejo, mainly from Portalegre.
