Mostra de Arte do IB

The outstanding art of 4 ISC IB-Visual Art students,
José Franco, Nicole Letti, Guillermo Lenz, and Juliana
Titon de Lima was recently displayed at the Art Gallery
at the Conselho Regional de Medicina do Estado do
Paraná (CRM-PR). Their work showcased a number
of techniques, including drawing, painting, woodcut,
sculpture and modeling.
A arte excepcional dos quatro alunos de Artes Visuais
do IB José Franco, Nicole Letti, Guillermo Lenz e Juliana
Titon de Lima foi recentemente exposta na galeria de arte
do Conselho Regional de Medicina do Estado do Paraná
(CRM-PR). Os alunos valeram-se de várias técnicas,
incluindo desenho, pintura, entalhe em madeira,
escultura e modelagem.
This year is the first year ISC has offered IB-Visual Arts as
an option to IB students and the art show was one of the
required assessments of the class. An IB examiner also
traveled to Curitiba and met individually with the artists
for one hour each to discuss and evaluate their artwork
as well as their understanding of the art techniques they
used.
Este, é o primeiro ano em que o ISC oferece a matéria
de Artes Visuais como opção aos alunos do IB, e a
mostra de arte foi um dos requisitos de avaliação da
matéria. Um examinador do IB veio a Curitiba e reuniu-se
individualmente com os artistas por uma hora para
discutir e avaliar suas obras de arte e manifestar seu
entendimento sobre as técnicas artísticas que utilizaram.

The ECC curriculum is developed according to various
themes. Each theme is integrated into all of the subject
areas and generates discussions and activities. This
integrated project approach is an effective way to
develop young inquiring minds, to promote collaborative
learning and to create a learning environment that is
both interesting and meaningful for young students. In
addition to the academic benefits, students also improve
their social skills and develop a better understanding of
the world around them, its particularities and differences.
O currículo do ECC é desenvolvido de acordo com
diversos temas. Cada tema é integrado a todas as outras
matérias, e gera debates e atividades. Esta integração
é uma ferramenta efetiva no desenvolvimento do
raciocínio das crianças, pois promove o aprendizado
colaborativo e cria um ambiente interessante e relevante
para eles. Além dos benefícios acadêmicos, os alunos
têm a oportunidade de desenvolverem-se socialmente
e compreender o mundo que os cerca, com suas
particularidades e diferenças.
At the end of each semester, ECC students present
what they have learned throughout the semester to their
parents during the ECC Project Presentations. These
presentations not only include the regular classroom
activities but also students’ performances in music and
drama related to their projects.
Ao final de cada semestre, temos as Apresentações dos
Projetos do ECC, durante as quais os alunos mostram
aos seus pais o que aprenderam durante aquele período.
Essas apresentações incluem não só as atividades
regulares de sala de aula, mas também as realizadas
nas aulas de música e teatro relacionadas ao tema do
projeto.
During this semester the students learned about very
interesting and exciting topics. An art exhibition could be
seen in the corridors around the school.
Durante este semestre os alunos estudaram tópicos
muito interessantes. Pudemos observar pelos corredores
de nossa escola a exposição de artes dos alunos.

PRE-TODDLER AND TODDLER
PRÉ-TODDLER E TODDLER
During the second semester, the Pre-Toddler and Toddler
students learned about the means of transportation and
animals. In the classroom, they built models of cars,
airplanes, a train and a boat, using recyclable material.
They also learned about traffic, how the traffic light works
and how to cross the street.
Durante o segundo semestre, os alunos do Toddler
aprenderam sobre os meios de transporte e animais. Na
sala de aula, as crianças fizeram maquetes de carros,
aviões, um trem e um barco usando material reciclável.
Eles também aprenderam sobre o trânsito, como
funcionam os sinais de trânsito, e como atravessar a rua.
During the fourth quarter, the children talked about
animals that fly, animals that swim and live on land. They
were very interested in learning about the peacocks,
lions, octopuses, fish, alligators, and small birds. They
also built models of each one of those animals that were
displayed all together.
No quarto bimestre, os alunos aprenderam sobre os
animais que voam, que nadam e que andam. Aprenderam
as características principais do pavão, leão, polvo,
peixe, jacaré e de pequenos pássaros. Eles também
construíram modelos de cada animal e apresentaram
todos juntos.
NURSERY
NURSERY
In the Nursery class, the students focused on their
community and the community services. After learning
about supermarkets, hospitals, and restaurants, they
took a tour around the city of Curitiba to visit the places
they had talked so much in class. They had a picnic at
Bosque Alemão, where they also heard a story told by
the witch who lives there. With all their great work, the
students, parents and teachers built a little city at school
and had so much fun showing it to all their guests.
As turmas do Nursery concentraram seu aprendizado
em suas comunidades e nos serviços oferecidos
pela comunidade. Depois de aprenderem sobre
supermercados, hospitais e restaurantes, eles saíram em
um passeio pela cidade de Curitiba, visitando os lugares
que estudaram em sala. Fizeram um piquenique no
Bosque Alemão, onde ouviram uma história sobre a bruxa
que vive ali. Usando tudo o que aprenderam, os alunos,
seus pais e professores construíram uma minicidade na
escola para a diversão de todos os presentes.
In addition to learning about the community services,
they also learned about pets and farm animals. They
talked about different body coverings pets such as dogs,
cats, turtles, birds and fish have. They also learned about
the importance of farm animals, as well as what some of
them provide for us.

de estimação e da fazenda. Estudaram sobre as
características de animais como cachorros, gatos,
tartarugas, pássaros e peixes. Também aprenderam

PRE-KINDERGARTEN
PRÉ-KINDERGARTEN
The children had lots of fun learning about the dinosaurs
and memorized their difficult names. In the excavation
site, the students worked hard to find the hidden bones.
They also made a volcano and saw its eruption during
their Science class.
As crianças divertiram-se estudando sobre os
dinossauros e seus nomes complicados. No sítio de
escavação, os alunos trabalharam muito para encontrar
os ossos escondidos. Também construíram um vulcão e
observaram sua erupção na aula de ciências.
They could also tell where their colleagues came from,
sang a song from each country and recognized the
different flags represented in each class.
Conseguiram também identificar as nacionalidades de
seus colegas, cantaram uma música típica de cada país
e identificaram bandeiras diferentes em cada aula.
The children started learning about life in the ocean, the
dark zone, the characteristics of those animals, where
they live, and their names.
As crianças começaram a aprender sobre a vida no
oceano, a zona escura, as características daqueles
animais, onde vivem e seus nomes.
The students made a number of art activities and
learned many songs related to the themes. They were
very enthusiastic about bringing their toys, books and
contributing with ideas and knowledge on the subject.
Fizeram muitas atividades artísticas e aprenderam
diversas músicas relacionadas aos temas. Eles adoraram
trazer seus brinquedos e livros para compartilhar suas
ideias e seus conhecimentos sobre o assunto.
KINDERGARTEN
KINDERGARTEN
In Kindergarten, the students learned about the solar
system. They learned about the planets’ names, their
order in the space, sizes and characteristics. In the
planetarium they had to use their flash lights in order
to see what was in the dark. They decorated a space
shuttle and made the helmets for this great adventure
in space.
No Kindergarten, os alunos aprenderam sobre o Sistema
Solar. Eles aprenderam os nomes, a ordem, o tamanho
e as características dos planetas. Em um planetário,
precisaram usar lanternas para descobrir o que havia
no escuro. Decoraram um foguete e confeccionaram
capacetes para essa maravilhosa aventura no espaço.
The children also had a great time learning about
the animals, they know that the animals live in
different regions, and are classified according to their
characteristics. Books, magazines, films, and stuffed
animals could be seen everywhere, as the students were
finding out new things and making their discoveries
about the animals’ lives.
The students learned how to locate all the continents
on the map, and could tell the country where their
friends came from. They had a great time sharing
with their friends all they knew about their countries’
characteristics, special food and important places,
following the posters they made at home.

As crianças também se divertiram ao estudar sobre
os animais, aprenderam que os animais vivem em
regiões diferentes e que são classificados conforme
suas características. Livros, revistas, filmes e bichos de
pelúcia estavam em toda parte, conforme os alunos iam
fazendo suas descobertas e aprendendo cada vez mais
sobre a vida dos animais.
Eles também aprenderam como localizar continentes
no mapa, e identificaram os diferentes países de onde
vieram. Eles adoraram compartilhar com os seus amigos
tudo o que sabiam sobre as características do seu país,
suas comidas típicas e lugares importantes, de acordo
com os cartazes que confeccionaram em casa.

As the philosophy of the league states, this is an
“opportunity to engage in healthy competition based on
fair play and sportsmanship.” Our ISC teams, as always,
were an example of sportsmanship, but that is not all;
they are also TOUGH and COMPETITIVE. It has been my
pleasure to have been part of the Athletic Department
and interact with the ISC athletes for the past three years.
I want to thank the ISC athletes for making every sports
season a success. I wish the best to you next year and a
future of adventure, accomplishment and joy.

Como diz a filosofia da liga, esta é uma “oportunidade
para participar de uma competição saudável, baseada
em fair play e espírito esportivo”. Os nossos times
foram, como sempre, um exemplo de espírito esportivo,
mas não apenas isso: também foram PERSISTENTES e
COMPETITIVOS. Foi um prazer imenso fazer parte do
Departamento de Esportes e interagir com os atletas do
ISC durante os últimos três anos. Gostaria de agradecer
aos atletas do ISC por fazerem de todas as temporadas
de esporte um sucesso. Desejo o melhor para vocês no

friend, wasn´t there, I remembered her everyday when I
didn´t see her playing. At the Awards Ceremony, I had
high hopes of winning the All-Star. I´m not saying that I
wasn´t surprised with the honour, because I was.
And I L- O -V-E-D it. I loved this ISSL and I hope that

Aprendi com cada uma das meninas do futebol que a
amizade vai além de tudo e que juntas podemos tudo.
Além disso, apesar de não estar com uma das minhas
melhores amigas, a Taci, lembrei-me dela todos os
dias, quando não a via jogar. No Awards Ceremony
havia expectativas de ganhar o All-Star. Não vou dizer
que não fiquei surpresa com o presente, porque fiquei.
E A-M-E-I. Adorei o ISSL II e espero que o próximo

Middle School
Friendship Tournament
Torneio Amistoso do Middle School

This year the MS Friendship Tournament in Uruguay
was an adventure! The trip down south to Montevideo
once again confirmed how extraordinary our students
are! They were a cohesive group that overflowed with
enthusiasm!
The objective of the MS Friendship Tournament is to
provide ISC students with the chance to socialize with
their fellow ISC teammates, Uruguayan and Argentine
athletes. It is an opportunity to be introduced to athletic
tournaments without the pressure of competition and
as a preparation to the Secondary Sports League. On
the courts and fields, the ISC middle school athletes
demonstrated their potential to be the next generation of
the ISC athletes.
A special thanks to the Uruguayan American School for
being extremely flexible and welcoming. Next year the
MS Friendship Tournament will once again be in Curitiba
and give ISC an opportunity to reciprocate.

O Torneio Amistoso do MS no Uruguai foi uma aventura!
A viagem para o sul até Montevidéu confirmou mais uma
vez como os nossos alunos são extraordinários! Eles
foram um grupo coeso e extremamente entusiasmado!
O objetivo do Torneio Amistoso do MS é proporcionar
aos alunos do ISC uma chance para se socializar com
seus colegas de equipe e atletas do Uruguai e da
Argentina. É uma oportunidade para apresentá-los a
torneios esportivos sem a pressão da competição e
também como uma preparação para a Liga de Esportes
do Secondary. Nas quadras e nos campos, os atletas do
Middle School do ISC demonstraram seu potencial para
a próxima geração de atletas do ISC.
Agradecemos especialmente à Escola Americana do
Uruguai por serem extremamente flexíveis e acolhedores.
No próximo ano, o Torneio Amistoso do MS novamente
acontecerá em Curitiba, e o ISC terá a oportunidade de
retribuir.

Shake It for Haiti
Alunos do ISC organizam "shake it for haiti"

student responsible for the idea of the talent show and for
organizing it.

When I first learned that our International School of
Curitiba National Honor Society (NHS) was planning a
talent show to raise money for Haiti relief, I recall thinking
how pleased I was with not only their global awareness,
but also their desire and commitment to provide much
needed aid for the Children of Haiti Project (COHP).
Then I learned that the students involved intended on
calling the fundraiser, “Shake It for Haiti.” Honestly, my
first reaction was that the charity event title sounded a bit
distasteful. But when the NHS planned the details of the
event following the January 12th earthquake, it became
clear that it was their intention to shake up our entire
ISC community to step forward and assist in raising
much needed funds for the opening of a school in Portau-Prince. Not only did the event raise US $1,500, but it
gave our community an opportunity to have a great time
just being together.
Quando soube que o National Honor Society do ISC
estava planejando um show de talentos para arrecadar
fundos para o Haiti, lembro-me de ficar muito feliz não
somente pela sua consciência global, mas também
pelo seu desejo e pelo comprometimento em ajudar
as crianças do Projeto Crianças do Haiti (COHP, na
sigla em inglês). Soube que os alunos envolvidos
pretendiam chamar o evento de “Shake it for Haiti”,
algo como “Sacuda para o Haiti”. Honestamente, minha
primeira reação foi de achar que o título para o evento
beneficente soava um pouco de mau gosto. Mas quando
o NHS planejou os detalhes do evento após o terremoto
de 12 de janeiro, ficou claro que a intenção era sacudir
toda a comunidade do ISC para que se posicionassem
e ajudassem a angariar fundos para a abertura de
uma escola em Porto Príncipe. O show não somente
arrecadou R$ 3.300,00, mas deu à nossa comunidade
a oportunidade de divertir-se muito, simplesmente por
estarmos juntos.
Led by the president of NHS, Cristiane Heinrichs, and
NHS sponsors, Monica Heinrichs and Eli Bomfim, the
ISC students in grades 1-12 enthusiastically embraced
the fundraising event which included more than 20 acts.
Performing to a standing room only audience, students
sang, danced, performed magic and vignettes, and
even gave a martial arts demonstration. Assisted by
the elementary student council, our NHS organized
games and sold food during the extended intermission
to raise additional funds. Individual donations were
also accepted, with ISC teacher George Miller agreeing
to have his long hair cut 1 centimeter for every R$100
raised. The next time you see him, you will no doubt
notice his hair is considerably shorter due to the haircut
he received from Mr. Bomfim that memorable evening.

alunos do ISC de 1º ano a 12ª série entusiasmadamente
aderiram ao show beneficente que incluiu mais de 20
apresentações. Atuando para um auditório lotado, os
alunos cantaram, dançaram, apresentaram shows de
mágica e vinhetas, e até deram uma demonstração de
artes marciais. Apoiados pelo grêmio estudantil do
Elementary (STUCO), o nosso NHS organizou jogos e
vendeu lanches durante um intervalo longo para angariar
mais fundos. Havia a possibilidade de fazer doações
individuais, e o professor George Miller aceitou cortar
1cm de cabelo para cada R$100,00 arrecadados. A
próxima vez que o vir, você certamente notará que o
cabelo dele está consideravelmente mais curto em

8th Grade
advisory 2009-2010
Aconselhamento da 8ª série - 2009/2010
The 8 th grade students were assigned to work with Nilza
Tartuce, a school for children with Down syndrome,
as their advisory project this year. As advisors, we
wanted to embrace ISC’s Student Expectations and
assist them in becoming creative thinkers and effective
communicators, who produce quality work with
excellence.
In order to accomplish these things, technology was
integrated into their classes. Digital photography
was used to create ads and teasers that would raise
awareness among their peers and fellow schoolmates.
Marketing and business skills were taught through bake
sales, where students incorporated a ticket system and
managed the money that was brought in by using MS
Excel spreadsheets. Not only did the students bring
their own delicious items to sell, but we also had two
large bake sales during Christmas and Easter with
Pannetones, Chocottones, and Columbas made at Nilza
Tartuce’s very own bakery! A grand total of 254 products
were sold! The money that was raised will be used to buy
cleaning supplies for the students at Nilza Tartuce.
Throughout these activities, our students will be best
prepared for CAS (Community, Action, and Service)
which is an ISC and IB requirement; in which they will
be able to demonstrate the following skills: independent
learning, social responsibility, and appreciate the value
of diversity.

Os alunos da 8ª série trabalharam com a Escola Especial
Nilza Tartuce, especializada em crianças com Síndrome
de Down. Como líderes, partimos das expectativas do
ISC para que os alunos sejam críticos e comunicadores
efetivos, produzindo trabalhos de excelente qualidade.
Para tanto, o uso da tecnologia foi incorporado às
aulas. Fotografias digitais foram usadas para a criação
de propagandas e de cartazes que instigassem
a curiosidade do público e, ao mesmo tempo,
conscientizassem a comunidade escolar.
Estratégias de marketing e negócios foram abordadas
na venda de bolos no recreio: um sistema de tíquetes
foi incorporado e, para o controle da receita, usamos o
programa Excel. Além das deliciosas guloseimas que
vendemos, tivemos duas grandes vendas de panetones
e colombas produzidos pela panificadora da Escola Nilza
Tartuce, perfazendo um total de 254 produtos vendidos!
O dinheiro arrecadado será usado para comprar
produtos de higiene e limpeza para os alunos da Nilza
Tartuce.
Por meio dessas atividades, a 8ª série estará mais
bem preparada para o CAS (Comunicação, Ação e
Serviço), uma exigência do ISC e do IB, em que poderão
demonstrar as seguintes habilidades: aprendizado
independente, responsabilidade social e apreciação da
diversidade existente na sociedade.

wORKSHOP MULTIMÍDIA: Uma nova opção de matéria eletiva para o Middle School
Since November, the 6 th -8 th grade students have been
given one more alternative for a Middle School elective:
the MultiMedia Workshop. The elective, which is taught
both in English and Portuguese by Ms. Bertille and Ms.
Pereira, integrates two key areas: creative writing and
the use of technology.
Desde novembro, os alunos de 6ª a 8ª séries têm
mais uma opção de matéria eletiva: o Workshop de
Multimídia. A disciplina, ensinada tanto em inglês quanto
em português por pelas professoras Bertille Koehler e
Joyce Pereira, envolve essencialmente duas áreas: a
escrita criativa e o uso da tecnologia.
The first step in developing a project is to define the
genre (advertising, photo story, radio, short film,
documentary, TV program) along with the topic that will
be discussed. From there, ideas are passed onto paper
collectively as a group along with the supervision of the
teachers.
O primeiro passo no desenvolvimento de um projeto é a
definição do gênero a ser trabalhado (filme, propaganda,
fotonovela, rádio, documentário, programa de televisão)
e qual assunto será abordado. A partir disso, há a
transposição das ideias para o papel, utilizando-se de
escrita coletiva com a mediação do professor.
With the script in hands, the project starts to take form as
the students analyze ways to use photos, MovieMaker,
PowerPoint, Pinnacle Studio 14, among others in the
most efficient and professional ways possible. During
this time, feedback and tips are given among students
and teachers on acting, camera positioning, facial
expression and corporal intonation.
Com o roteiro em mãos, vem a parte da execução
do projeto, quando analisamos quais os meios mais
eficazes para tanto, tais como fotografia, MovieMaker,
PowerPoint, Pinnacle Studio 14, entre outros. Neste
momento também há a inclusão de algumas dicas de
atuação, como posicionamento em frente a câmera,
expressões facial e corporal e entonação.
The 2nd quarter project, the Photo Story “The Revenge
of the Nerds”, was photographed at the school, and is
available in both Portuguese and English. Throughout
the 3 rd and 4 th quarters, we worked on creating a short
film based on the book “Twilight”, with hints of HighSchool Musical, Star Wars, and “Ana Maria Braga”! This
was filmed completely in Portuguese.
O projeto realizado no 2º bimestre foi a fotonovela
“A revanche dos nerds”, ambientada em uma escola,
disponível em português e inglês.

What does geometry have to do with
gardening?
O que geometria tem a ver com jardinagem?
Recently, Ms. Saatkamp’s 9 th grade geometry students
present their integrated garden projects to members of
the after school Garden Club and ISC Administration.
Their assignment was to design to scale future plans
for the ISC garden. Using a program that enabled
them to program in space requirements, they took into
consideration the amount of walkway space needed for
wheel barrows to pass and ease of access to plants.
The Garden Club selected the best design ideas and
submitted them for approval. The design is currently
being evaluated to determine if it will be feasible to
implement as part of the ISC garden.
Recentemente, a turma da 9ª série de geometria da
professora Maria Cláudia Saatkamp apresentou seus
projetos de jardins integrados aos membros da atividade
extracurricular Clube do Jardim e à administração do
ISC. Suas tarefas foram desenhar em escala planos
futuros para o Jardim do ISC. Usando um programa que
lhes permitiu incluir especificações de espaço, os alunos
consideraram o espaço necessário para que carrinhos
de mão possam passar nas calçadas e facilitar o acesso
às plantas.
O Clube do Jardim selecionou as melhores ideias e
enviou-as para aprovação. O design vencedor está no
momento sendo avaliado para determinar se poderá ser
executado como parte do Jardim do ISC.

ISC Mother’s
Day Programs
Programação de Dia das Mães do ISC
Ecc - May 6 / 6 de maio
ISC’s youngest students honored their mothers for
Mother’s Day with a short performance and then joined
their mothers in the audience to lead them in a healthy
workout, followed by a nice back massage. Children
and mothers then decorated an eco-friendly bag – a
gift of love from the children to their mothers. Director
for the program was ISC music teacher, Ms. Marilene
Nascimento
Os nossos pequenos alunos celebraram o Dia das Mães
com uma breve apresentação musical. Depois, juntaram-se às suas mães na plateia para praticar exercícios,
seguidos por uma bela massagem nas costas. Mães
e crianças ainda decoraram sacolas ecológicas – um
presente de amor dos filhos às suas mães. O programa
foi dirigido pela professora de música do ISC, Marilene
Nascimento.

An overflow audience of mothers watched their children
pay tribute to motherhood through the ages. Beginning
with cavemen, followed by the pharaohs of ancient
Egypt, renaissance kings, until modern day, mothers
were honored. Students performed a variety of musical
numbers accompanied the ISC Suzuki strings and
recorders. Director for the performance was ISC music
teacher, Ms Mônica Heinrichs.

Muitas mães assistiram ao tributo dos filhos à
maternidade através dos tempos. A homenagem
começou com os homens das cavernas, passando pelos
faraós do Antigo Egito, os reis da Renascença, até os
dias modernos. Os alunos realizaram diversos números
musicais, acompanhados pelo grupo de flautas e pelo
Suzuki Strings do ISC. O programa foi dirigido pela

Peter Pan
The ISC version of Peter Pan, performed at Teatro Lala
Schneider, featured actors from both elementary and
secondary drama students along with musical numbers.
This student produced play captivated the audiences
with its scenes from Neverland, the magical land of Lost
Boys, where children never grow old.

A versão do ISC para a peça Peter Pan, apresentada no
Teatro Lala Schneider, contou com a participação tanto
de alunos de teatro do Elementary quanto do Secondary,
além de números musicais. A peça, produzida por
