«Uma vez
no extremo oeste
do continente europeu,
onde Portugal tem o seu nariz pontiagudo,
pelo menos no atlas,
deparei-me com um hotel abandonado.
Com cada onda
o Atlântico impõe a sua posse deste pedaço
de terra.
Este lugar estava a pedir para se tornar
um filme,
achei,
apercebendo-me ao mesmo tempo
que já tinha trazido a história comigo,
e que só aqui poderia tirar esse peso dos
meus ombros.
A América estava “oposta”,
do outro lado do mar.
O filme chamou-se “O Estado das Coisas”
com Henri Alekan como director de
fotografia.
Foi um balanço bastante pessimista e
sombrio do cinema,
mas mesmo assim, a luz do Henry ainda
conseguiu dar brilho a tudo.»
«Once
at the westernmost tip
of the European continent,
where Portugal has its pointed nose,
at least on the atlas,
I came across an abandoned hotel.
With every wave
the Atlantic asserted its claim on this piece
of land.
This place longed to become a movie,
I felt,
realizing at the same time
that I had already brought the story for it
with me,
and that only here I’d be able to get it off
my chest.
America was “opposite”,
just across the sea.
The movie was called “The State of Things”,
with Henri Alekan as
director of photography.
It was a pretty pessimistic and dark
inventory of the cinema,
but Henry’s light still succeeded in making
things shine.»
