Galeria Quadrado Azul opens, next October 6, at 4 pm, in Porto, a new
exhibition by Francisco Tropa, entitled Museu, curated by Simone Menegoi.
The show has its origins in a public art project conceived in 2001: a
parallelepiped to be installed in a square. The object is traversed by a corridor
uniting two doors, one in each extremity. The interior is divided by two
glass windows, accessed through trapdoors, from diverse dimensions. The
word “museu” (museum) is inscribed over both entries. The project has a
component ideally activated by a series of figures, convened by itself.
Shortly after 2001, Francisco Tropa developed another project which was
installed in the park of Universidade Politécnica de Valência, in Spain. The
sculpture in stone, with the same volumetry of the piece designed for the first
project, is constituted by a group of geometric solids in limestone, which form
two transverse niches, touching each other. Two openings communicate, one
more elevated than the other one.
The exhibition now presented is composed by models, drawings and
sculptures produced between 2001 and 2012. With these elements, Simone
Menegoi constructed a show where a certain idea of game makes possible
multiple variations around a heterodox institutional critique.
Galeria Quadrado Azul opens, in the same day, another exhibition of the artist,
entitled Flores, an edition constituted by new works on paper.

Francisco Tropa was born in Lisbon, in 1968. Lives and works in Lisbon.
Represented Portugal in the last edition of Venice Biennial (2011) and
participate in Istambul Biennial (2011), Manifesta (2000), Melbourne Biennial
(1999) and São Paulo Biennial, this last one with the Lourdes Castro (1999).

Simone Menegoi (1970) is an Italian critic and curator. He collaborates with
Artforum. Along with Cecilia Canziani, he curates ZegnArt – Public, a program of
public commissions in emerging countries and residencies in Italy sponsored
by fashion brand Ermenegildo Zegna. Among his recent exhibitions, LE SILENCE
Une fiction at Nouveau Musée National de Monaco (Principality of Monaco) and
Bouvard and Pécuchet’s Compendious Quest for Beauty (co-curated with Chris
Sharp) at the David Roberts Art Foundation (London), both 2012.
