“Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up”
Pablo Picasso
Dear Parents,
One of the highlights of this week for me was attending the Prep assembly on
Thursday morning. Butterflies and Ladybirds staged two highly enjoyable dramas
based on the well-known children´s
stories, The Three Little Pigs and The
Enormous Turnip. In addition to the
wonderful costumes, inventive set and
enjoyable songs I was truly impressed by the quality of
English spoken and the confidence of our youngest pupils
on stage. I pay tribute to their teachers and teaching
assistants and I commend our pupils on their success.
The primary school is now entering into the season of
assemblies and musicals and over the next few weeks
various classes will stage their assemblies culminating with
the F5 Musical, Porridge. When adults are asked about
their memories of school, one of the most common themes is participating in a school production. The
sense of camaraderie, self revelation and achievement makes it a high point and I am delighted that
more and more of our pupils get this opportunity.
The key skills of the successful pupil and adult in this fast changing world are discernment-that I have
discussed in previous columns- and creativity. Sir Anthony Seldon, Former Headmaster of Wellington
College, puts it eloquently: “Who we are is determined by our creativity. The ability to express
yourself artistically leads to our distinctive characters. It is what makes us. Cultural learning is
important in the formation of personality and individuality.”
Drama is one of the key channels to develop this creativity with its emphasis on improvisation, on
building confidence, on boosting self-esteem, on developing interpersonal skills, on revealing others in
a new light and on provoking reflection.
I have already been discussing the secondary musical production for 2016-2017 with Ms Patterson and
Mr. Oliveira and the preparations are already well advanced. We are looking at staging this in early
February 2017 with rehearsals beginning in the first term of the new academic year.

SPORTS UPDATE
OBS House
Ultimate Frisbee
championships
2016
Unfortunately, this Saturday´s house Ultimate Frisbee championship has had to be postponed as a
result of a shortage of registered players.
Fear not, we are rescheduling for this to be held during the activities week in the week beginning June
27th 2016. Ultimate club continues after school on Tuesdays between 16.15 and 17.00 every week.
Matthew Homewood, Head of PE, Games & Outdoor Activities
PRIMARY NOTICES
This week I have seen the Prep pupils perform a
wonderful assembly packed with drama, speech and
singing; this was a very special opportunity to see how
confident the pupils are becoming at speaking English
to an audience. It was also very good for me to see the
Form 5 pupils, at the opposite end of the school,
continue their rehearsals for their upcoming play; it is
amazing to see the very talented pupils we have here.
I have been extremely impressed with the quality of the
drama
assemblies
productions
taking
place
at
school
recently; these do take
a great deal of effort to prepare for and I would like to thank, not just
the teachers and staff, who do a superb job, but also the parents that
have helped in many different ways to ensure that these activities are
successful. Ticket information for the Form 5 play will be in next
week’s bulletin.
Our school sports day will soon be arriving. This event, taking place at
the British club on Campo Alegre, continues to be very popular among
parents and we hope that you are able to take some time off work for this event. Please do ensure that
you read the information from Mr Homewood regarding this event, especially regarding the packed
lunch picnic!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

THE IBDP COORDINATOR´S DESK
F11 students continued preparations for studying in the USA today. They had an hour long Skype
interview with Claire Wilkins, the International Admissions Officer for NYU. Claire fielded a number of
questions and delivered some excellent advice about college applications and preparation for the
upcoming SATs tests in Lisbon.
Next Thursday our future medics will have a daylong intensive course on preparing for UK CAT and
BMAT examinations and applications for medical school. This is primarily for our F11 students but those
interested in medicine from F9 and 10 are welcome to attend the afternoon session 14:00 to 16:00.
