Caros Violetistas e Amigos da Viola,
Caros amigos,
É um prazer e uma honra para mim dar-vos as boas-vindas
ao 42º Congresso Internacional de Viola d’Arco no Porto.
É com grande entusiasmo que vemos concretizado um sonho
há muito acalentado e acolhemos no Porto o 42º Congresso
Internacional de Viola.
É a primeira vez que um congresso nosso é acolhido em Portugal.
Foi apenas há alguns anos que Jorge Alves juntamente com outros
violetistas entusiastas fundou a Associação Portuguesa da Viola
D’Arco. Que estejam a acolher o 42º Congresso Internacional de
Viola d’Arco, é um grande feito!
O programa do congresso apresenta violetistas distintos não só
de Portugal mas também de países tão distantes como o Canadá,
a Costa Rica, a Finlândia ou a Polónia, internacionalizando esta
ocasião. Vai ser emocionante conhecer colegas de tantas partes
do mundo, ao mesmo tempo que poderemos conhecer esta cidade
com uma vida cultural tão versátil. Encorajo-vos a aproveitar esta
oportunidade única.
Finalmente, gostaria de felicitar e agradecer aos organizadores
do congresso, Jorge Alves e à sua equipa, às instituições de
acolhimento e aos inúmeros patrocinadores e amigos que
contribuíram para tornar realidade esta semana de música
e camaradagem.

Desejo-vos uma estadia agradável no Porto!
Desde a sua criação em 2008, a Associação Portuguesa da Viola
D’Arco tem como um dos seus principais objectivos ligar, através
da música, Portugal e os portugueses ao mundo. Por isso,
abraçámos o desafio com uma equipe extraordinária, que não se
poupou a esforços para tornar possível este projeto que tanto vai
dignificar a viola, a sua música e os seus intérpretes. Muito temos
que agradecer à cidade do Porto, às suas gentes e instituições
que desde o início receberam o projeto de braços abertos e muito
ajudaram à sua concretização.
Através de um elevado número de propostas, conseguimos
selecionar um programa de alta qualidade e reunir no Porto
um fantástico grupo de violetistas de prestígio internacional,
que ao longo dos 5 dias do Congresso vão partilhar connosco
a sua experiência artística. Teremos a oportunidade de ouvir um
riquíssimo conjunto de obras para viola que irão ser apresentadas
em várias salas desta cidade do Porto, onde todos os participantes
terão a oportunidade de conhecer e desfrutar a hospitalidade tão
característica desta gente do norte de Portugal. Não é em vão que
a cidade do Porto foi considerado o melhor destino turístico
europeu em 2013 e 2014.
Com o título Performing for the Future of Music, o programa
do congresso transparece uma atenção especial às gerações
mais jovens e uma vontade de que todos os violetistas tenham
uma oportunidade de performance. Por isso, convidamos todos
a participar nos ensaios e concerto do ensemble do congresso,
nas masterclasses e na Viola Tasca onde, after hours em ambiente
informal, continua o convívio e a partilha. No Domingo a presença
é obrigatória no concerto da maior orquestra de violas do mundo.

Dear Violists and Friends of the Viola,
Dear friends,
It is an honour and a pleasure for me to extend
a warm welcome to all those attending the 42nd
International Viola Congress in Porto.
It is with great enthusiasm that we realize
a long cherished dream and welcome the 42nd
International Viola Congress to Porto.
This is the first time that one of our congresses
is being hosted in Portugal. It has only been
a very few years since Jorge Alves, together
with other enthusiastic violists, founded the
Portuguese Viola Society. That they are now
hosting the 42nd International Viola Congress
is indeed an enormous achievement!
Since its foundation in 2008, the Associação
Portuguesa da Viola D’Arco has had, as one of its
main objectives, the desire to connect Portugal,
and the Portuguese to the rest of the world
through music. Therefore we embraced this
challenge, with an extraordinary team which has
spared nothing to make this project possible,
in the name of the viola, its music and its
performers. We have much to thank the city
of Porto, its people and institutions who have,
from the beginning, received the project with
open arms and really helped to make it happen.
The programme of the congress features
prominent viola players from throughout
Portugal, as well as from countries as far away
as Canada, Costa Rica, Finland or Poland,
making this a truly international occasion. It is
going to be very exciting to meet colleagues
from so many different parts of the world, while
at the same time getting to know a city that
is brimming with an exciting cultural life.
I encourage all of you to take advantage of this
unique opportunity.

Finally, I would like to thank and congratulate
the congress organisers, Jorge Alves and his
team, the host institutions, and the numerous
sponsors and supporters who have all
contributed to make this week of music and
comradeship a reality.
From a large number of proposals, we were
able to select a high quality program and gather
in Porto a fantastic group of internationally
renowned violists who over the five days
of Congress will share with us their artistic
experience. We will have the opportunity
to hear a rich range of works for viola that will
be performed in various Porto concert halls,
where the participants will have the opportunity
to experience and enjoy the hospitality
so characteristic of this people of the north
of Portugal. Not for nothing that the city of
Porto was considered the best European tourist
destination in 2013 and 2014.

With the title Performing for the Future of Music,
the Congress program gives special emphasis
to younger generations, and the desire that
all have an opportunity to perform. With this
in mind, we invite everyone to participate in
the rehearsals and concert of the Congress
ensemble, in the masterclasses and our Viola
Tasca where, after hours in an informal bar
setting the stage is for the taking and the
sharing must go on. Sunday attendance is
mandatory in the concert of the largest viola
orchestra in the world.
