Presidency of the Republic Secretariat for Institutional Affairs ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL – CDES INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON DEVELOPMENT Brasilia, 05 - 06 March 2009. GROUNDS: The Economic and Social Development Council (CDES), advisory body of the Presidency of the Republic, has been debating and contributing to the Brazilian development process, considering it a shared task between the government and civil society. Since de beginning of 2009, the Economic and Social Development Council has been conducting its activities and reflections by following the international financial crisis referring to the effects over the Brazilian economy and seeking solutions for disorders and defies which, due to its nature of global crisis, will have inevitably repercussions over Brazil. In this sense there has already been periodic monitoring meetings, gathering of CDES Councilors, governmental strategic managers and members of the academy in the quest of economic policy measures to be proposed to the President of the Republic in such a delicate moment to Brazil and to the world. In these meetings aspects such as: economic, fiscal and monetary policy; productive development; international trade; have been analyzed with emphasis on the credit, production, consumption, employment, exchange international trade and inflation conduct; as well as the Program for Growth Acceleration – PAC fundamental key to avoid a acute deceleration of economic activities in the Country. At a time in which Brazil is relatively in a more fortunate condition in relation to the majority of emerging countries arising as a potential leader among them in the context of strengthening the G20 role in conducting the international economic policy, CDES has felt the need to extend the discussion on the new pattern of multipolar development, now under debate among the main multilateral institutions, among the academicians, among numerous civil society locations, calling on national and international experts who excelled while examining such issues.
