Lessons from the agony in the Garden
Dear friends, we are already in Holy week. This is the time
we should spend meditating on the passion of Christ. The
Journey of His passion began in the Garden of Gethsemane.
One of my friends, who visited the Holy Land, shared with
me the experience he had there. Listening to him I decided
to make a spiritual tour to the Garden of Olives. I pictured
Jesus there on Holy Thursday night. It was there that an
intense scene of the tragic play took place. Jesus taught me a
lot of lessons there. The first lesson was how to overcome
the most difficult times of our lives. Jesus is being really
challenged here. Imagine he was a man of my own age or
even one or two years younger than me. He is struggling
there with the thought of to taking that huge, heavy cross on
his shoulder. He prays to His Father to take away the cup. It
is the most crucial time of his life. He seems like he is
loosing confidence in his Father. We see in the gospel of St.
John, Jesus' confidence in His Father. He said his Father
testifies on His behalf and His testimony is true. Jesus says
he does what He has seen and heard from His Father. But
now He falls down and prays. When does a man fall down?
It is when he is helpless and defeated. The pain that he is
going through is so severe, that St. Luke says Jesus sweats
blood. We pray a lot in the same way, for miracles to
happen, and for the Father to take away the sufferings of our
daily life. What is a miracle? We call something a miracle
when God hears our prayers and acts on our plan. I think
there are two kinds of miracles the first one is when God
hears our prayers and acts on our plan and the second one is
when we listen to God and act on His plan. This is what we
see in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus prays, "not my will
but yours be done". And that is the greatest miracle which
led to the glorious Resurrection. Mary said the same thing
'Your will be done' and that led to Christmas. A similar
story that we find in the Bible is the story of King David
(2Samuel 12: 15-23). The Bible calls him a man according
to the heart of God. What an attribute. But David, a man
according to the heart of God, sinned. As a result of his sin
God said through the Prophet Nathan, that his son would
die. His son falls sick. David asking God's Mercy started
praying for the life of his child. We read in the bible that
David wore sack cloth, ate nothing, lamenting and crying he
prayed prostrated on the floor. He prayed for days without
eating, drinking or washing. But the child died. The servants
were afraid to tell him the news for they saw how much he
loved his child. But some of them took the courage to
inform him of the death of his child. It surprised them all
that when David heard the news that his child was dead, he
got up from the floor, went to wash and came to eat and
drink. He seemed to be at peace. Then one of the servants
asked why David was so sad when the child was sick and
now appeared at peace after his child died. David said that it
was true he was sad and now he was at peace. I prayed that
God would follow my plan but he did not so I am going to
follow his plan. I have nothing to be sad about. Let us try to
go with Gods Plan for us as we continue our journey to the
Resurrection.
