Everyone has been generous and supportive! Ralph Rattelmueller, Barbara Johnson, and daughter Julie own and operate the recently opened Mimosa Market in Brewery Gulch. We "old-timers" in Bisbee fondly remember the store as Aira's; and then in the 90's as Cranberry Mercantile. But for the original residents, this building first housed a dance hall; and in the 50's it is said to have been the San Sue Restaurant. The Mimosa Market family moved to Bisbee from Denver earlier this year. Tired of the big city life, they visited Bisbee, and like many of us, it was in instant love affair. They purchased the building the first day they saw it, and renovations ensued shortly after. photo: Renee Doehrel New Columns Steve Bovée David Eppele Dick Bakken Neil Ziegler Ralph, once a chef at the Normandy Restaurant in Denver, lived in Nuremberg, Germany until he was 6 years old. He arrived in Colorado knowing only 6 English words, and was shocked when he couldn't order a beer with his lunch. He claims he learned the English language best by following sailors up and down the streets of downtown Denver while his mother was at work. Sailors in Denver? She remembers, however, Chicotskis neighborhood market in Corpus Christi with narrow aisles and groceries piled to the ceiling. Going to the market was a social event. "It was like a community center, which is what we want Mimosa Market to be for everyone here," she beams. There's an ongoing "special request list" taped to the front door and Barbara encourages her customers to pull up a chair and sit for a spell. Bring in The Bisbee Marquee: Az news, art and events some family snapshots and she'll show you their album packed with photos of their recent migration to Bisbee. The welcoming family environment doesn't stop at just the two-legged customers. Mimosa Market also sports a special pet waiting area just outside the front door. Behind the closed gate is a continuously running watering hole and you can even grab a doggie biscuit from the cookie jar at the counter for your road-weary pooches. The Airas Ralph and Barbara are far from new to this line of work. They lived in Hawaii for 4 years and operated the Kona Theater Café, a restaurant and bakery located in an old vaudeville theater. Ralph baked everything from bagels to wedding cakes, and claims to have been the only person in Hawaii to make homemade bagels. They flew a batch from the big island to Maui every day. Ralph Rattelmueller and Barbara Johnson Renee Doehrel Mimosa Market carries a wide variety of items. In addition to the usual necessities, the store offers bulk herbs and grains, soy milk, tofu, fresh produce (some organic) and at least a half-dozen different brands of peanut butter...including the mayor's request - Reese's Peanut Butter. You can get your cold cuts sliced to order on the 1934 vintage meat slicer that was once Jimmy Aira's. Their recently opened deli includes a fine line of meats and cheeses along with fresh roasted chickens, homemade meatballs, homemade salad dressings and much more! While we were there talking with the Mimosa family, a customer came in for the first time and exclaimed, "Wow, you really have a first-class market here! Everybody's been telling me about it." Ralph and Barbara hope to get their beer and wine license some time in November, and plans are in the works to set up a coffee shop in the back. Ralph will also start making another of his specialty items, Truffles. He already has a flyer printed that lists his line of truffles and other poetic musings: Dear Truffle-muncher, Dick Bakken Neil Ziegler Restaurant of the month Gallery Articles Columns Fiction Directory Classified This is a very personal business and really, an experiment in alternative living. My name is Ralphie and I am the Top Curmudgeon of Milliways, Inc., a multifaceted artistic endeavor. I have been a chef off and on for most of my life. I sincerely love to make delicious foods and believe that, if done with the right mix of joy and attention, they will nourish more than just our cells. Please be assured that I will probably not have all items on hand at any given time. I make chocolates in small batches with as much personal love and attention as possible so this means that industrializing for the sake of demand is simply out of the question. If I got, you get; if not, try later or ask me to let you know. I also assure you that once in a huge while I will make a mistake and something will be amiss. Inc such a case, I will do my best to right it. These truffles are for the few. For those who have examined life and found it beautiful, frightening, mysterious, strange and really, really funny, and anybody else that wants to buy them. http://www.bisbeemarquee.com/www/2003/0916/03_2.php (1 of 2)7/24/2005 10:45:16 PM
