— Colossians 1:28b
Celebrating over a Century of
Faith and Education
St. Barbara Parish is a Roman Catholic community
celebrating a century of faith in the Bridgeport area. Our
faith community welcomes all people, helping them grow
spiritually through liturgy, prayer, and education, and
socially through activities for all ages. Our school takes
great pride in fostering these values in our children. We
give witness to our faith by sharing with each other our
God-given gifts and talents. We nourish and sustain our
faith as a family by celebrating the sacraments and the
presence of the risen Lord among us in the Eucharist.
FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTIONS
Mass at 8:30 a.m., followed by a short period of Adoration
of the Blessed Sacrament. Evening Mass at 6:00 p.m., followed by Exposition and Adoration, concluding with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 7:30 p.m.
THE ROSARY
Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. before the 6:00 p.m. Mass, and on
Sunday at 5:30 a.m. before the 6:00 a.m. Sunday Mass.
OFFICE HOURS

All Saturday and Sunday Masses—CHURCH
Dear People of St. Barbara,
Our 22nd Annual ParishFest is upon us. Remember that
day 2 of ParishFest goes from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on
Saturday. If you have not yet returned your ParishFest
Raffle Books, the drawing is tonight, Saturday, at 10:30
p.m., so you still have time to turn them in at the Raffle
Table. If you misplaced or forgot your ParishFest raffle
tickets, extra tickets are available at the Raffle Table for
$25 each for a booklet of 5 tickets ($5 each). This raffle
has $4000 in prize money.
There are several other Raffles which continue through
Saturday night. Split the Pot Raffle Tickets are $5 each.
One winner will take home 1/2 of the total pot. There is
also the Holy Name TV Raffle for a 43” and 32” Flat
Panel TV with tickets at $5 each. Plus the Be a Star for a
Day Raffle with the Bobbie Brown Makeup Artist for 4
and Lunch for 4 at Bloomingdales, with tickets at $10
each. These drawings will take place beginning at 10:30
p.m. Saturday. The winner does not need to be present.
A small group of people have been meeting monthly
since February to plan our annual Parish Fest. I am
particularly grateful for their work and for the leadership
of our ParishFest Chair, Mary Murray. If anyone can help
with ParishFest Take-down on Sunday, either before or
after Sunday morning Mass, your help in the parking lot
would be greatly appreciated.
One theme in this weekend’s Gospel is the rivalry of
Martha and Mary described in Saint Luke’s Gospel,
which has been played out over the centuries. The
Gospel story highlights the need for both an active and
contemplative life in the church. For us, our faith has to
be balanced with both prayer and action. We need to
listen to the Word of Jesus, but we also have to put his
Word into action in our lives.
Another theme is the importance of hospitality.
Hospitality can make a business, and the lack of
hospitality can break a business. Similarly, hospitality
can have a huge effect on the vitality of a parish. At St.
Barbara, we have Greeters to welcome at the entrance of
the Church. Before Mass begins, you are invited to greet
those around you. I try to make it a point to introduce
myself to someone who I might not recognize before or
after Mass. I welcome them as a visitor, and if they have
recently moved into Bridgeport, I invite them to consider
becoming parishioners of St. Barbara Parish. We are all
called to welcome one another in the name of Jesus, our
Lord.
Yours in Christ,
-Fr. Dennis Ziomek

Pilot Scholarship Program at St. Barbara School
The Archdiocese of Chicago has given
St. Barbara School the opportunity to
participate in a pilot scholarship
program for families who want their
children to have a Catholic school
education but cannot afford it.
The Caritas Scholarship program may cover up to 50% of
a student’s tuition, with the balance paid by the parents or
guardians of the student. Scholarships will be committed
for three years, provided the student remains in good
standing, and continues to demonstrate financial need,
based on annual submissions of financial aid forms.
Big Shoulders Fund is also offering an ACCESS
scholarship to public school families that desire a
Catholic school education. These scholarships are
renewable for three years as well.
All applicant families must submit a financial aid
application, school application and interview with the
principal. For more information, please call the school at
312-326-6243. Summer hours are 9-12 noon.

Summer Mission Appeal
July 27-28
Next weekend we welcome Fr. Jospeh Domfeh, from
the Diocese of Sunyani, Ghana, West Africa. Most
of the people in the Diocese of Sunyani are poor
peasant farmers. The area lags behind the rest of the
country in education, basic infrastructure, and health.
Consequently, the Diocese has made social development a major part of and a tool for the evangelization
of the people.
Most of the people are poor. The average income of
most of the people in the area is $500.00 US dollars.
The Faith is relatively young. The faithful are
mainly first generation Christians. In many areas,
the Word of God is preached for the first time, and
the people are learning about Christ for the first time.
Major funding for the missionary activity of the Diocese of Sunyani comes from the generosity of friends
and participation in the Mission Appeal.
The generosity of the people of St. Barbara will help
to enable the Diocese of Sunyani to better serve the
people of God in their local Church in the Diocese of
Sunyani, Ghana, West Africa.
