Parish Schedule
Evangelization is not only necessary for our Regular
Sunday Mass:
own salvation but for joy in our lives today 4:30 pm Saturday
Pope Benedict XVI has placed “the new
evangelization” at the top of the Church’s
agenda and dedicated the next Ordinary General Assembly in 2012 to examine the journey
that has been made and to resume with fresh
impetus the urgent work still to
be done in evangelizing today’s world.
The Holy Father recently
published the Lineamenta, the
first of a series of documents
relating to the Synod, to provide a common basis on
which to begin reflections.
In it he points out that the
Church's commitment to evangelizing activity was a major
characteristic of the apostolic
ministry of both Pope Paul VI
and Pope John Paul II. Pope
Paul VI, in reemphasizing the
primacy of evangelization,
stated:
"It would be useful if every Christian and
every evangelizer were to pray about the following thought: through God's mercy, people can
gain salvation in other ways besides our
preaching the Gospel to them; but as for us,
can we gain salvation, if through negligence,
fear, shame - what St. Paul called 'shrinking
from the Gospel' - or as a result of false ideas,
we fail to preach it?"
However, Pope Benedict also stressed the
joy that is inherent in the work of evangelization
and identified the restoration of joy to the Christian life as an equally important reason for renewing the
appeal for a new evangelization.
“A new evangelization means
to share the world's deep
desire for salvation and render
our faith intelligible by communicating the logos of hope (cf.
1 Pt 3:15). Humanity needs
hope to live in these present
times. The content of this
hope is ‘God, who has a human face and who 'has loved
us to the end'.’ For this reason, the Church is, by her very
nature, missionary. We cannot
selfishly keep for ourselves the words of eternal
life, which we received in our personally encountering Jesus Christ. They are destined for
each and every person. Each person today,
whether he knows it or not, needs this proclamation.

Stewardship Reflection
‘Try to find out what is pleasing to the
Lord’, St. Paul tells us today. What is pleasing to God is that we be a light to the world.
Each one of us is anointed, called, and gifted.
What are the gifts that you have been given?
It is through prayerful discernment that we
learn to know our gifts, and how to use and
share them in a manner that is both pleasing
to God and gives glory to God. Use your gifts
well! Be a light!

Considering bequest in will?
Have you considered leaving a gift to St.
Luke’s Parish in your will? If you do, please be
sure the wording is clear so that your wishes
are fully understood. The recommended format,
which may form part of a new will or be added
to an existing will as a codicil, is:
“Bequest: I give and bequeath to the Roman
Catholic Archbishop of Vancouver, incorporated under a special Act of Legislative Assembly of BC and whose offices are located in
Vancouver, BC, for the benefit of St. Luke’s
Parish, Maple Ridge, BC, the sum of $__dollars or __% of the estate or the total of the
residue of the estate.”
Thank you for remembering St. Luke's Parish in such a meaningful way.
Please pray for the sick:

Split perennials to help
our Annual Plant Sale!
Now that the ground is getting warm, green thumbs have
no doubt been digging in their
gardens. When dividing perennials, please keep in mind that St.
Luke’s Annual Plant Sale is
coming up Saturday, April 30.
We need more plant suppliers to
fill our tables this year as some of our faithful
parishioner gardeners who have donated in the
past are no longer gardening and can’t donate.
This is a great opportunity to share your
plants with others while contributing to charitable work and adding great variety to your
own garden. House plant cuttings can also be
rooted and potted and would be most appreciated. Pots for replanting are available and our
“green thumbs” can help with advice on splitting, storing and care of plants.
Please contact the parish office,
[email protected], 604.465.5383, if you
can help out. There will also be a concession
and bake sale the same day so please come
out to enjoy yourself while picking out some
plants to beautify your garden.

Rev. James Hughes, pastor of St. Ann’s

from Wednesday, April 13 through Monday,
April 18, 10:30 am to 4 pm, and 6 to 9:30 pm.
This unique event, says Fr. Hughes, which
includes a full-sized photographic replica of the
shroud, Passion replicas, and 29 museum
boards on the facts surrounding the science,
history, art and timeline of the Shroud of Turin,
will touch people of all ages and professions, of

Throughout the Church's history, says the
Holy Father, evangelization has produced in
Christians “an interior enthusiasm that nobody
and nothing can quench.” For us too, he said, it
may be the “great joy of our consecrated lives.”
“May the world of our time... be enabled to
receive the Good News not from evangelizers
who are dejected, discouraged, impatient or
anxious, but from ministers of the Gospel
whose lives glow with fervor, who have first
received the joy of Christ, and who are willing to
risk their lives so that the Kingdom may be
proclaimed and the Church established in the
midst of the world.’ “

“To be unaware of this need creates a desert and an emptiness. In fact, the obstacles to
the new evangelization are precisely a lack of
joy and hope among people, caused and
spread by various situations in our world today.
Oftentimes, this lack of joy and hope is so
strong that it affects the very tenor of our ChrisPresenting tian communities. This is the reason for renewing the appeal for a new evangelization, not
simply as an added responsibility but as a way

Chuck Luttrell, Director of the Office of Religious Education at RCAV, on how to “survive”
life with teenagers Tuesday, April 5, 6:30 pm, in
the St. Patrick’s School music room.
The evening will offer valuable tips on keeping communication open, what to expect from
teens, and how to navigate these potentially
tumultuous years.
Luttrell has served the archdiocese in many
capacities, including elementary and high
school principal and assistant superintendent.
Chair of the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1984,
he also played a key part in the 1990 Archdiocesan Centennial Committee and the Great Jubilee celebrations. A member of the Archdiocesan Synod, he developed and teaches the
RCAV Marriage Preparation course, and continues to be a valued adviser to the archbishop.
Please come and spend an evening with

many children and grandchildren of his own.
