MAPPING_GENOCIDE:
The process of genocide is a series of events that take place according to the specific form that has its
own stages, and which is characterized by a certain 'internal logic'. A genocidal process has a
beginning, a structured course, and its conclusion. Firstly, it starts with identification of the target
group (victims usually selected based on an affiliation to a group or category of population) that is
subjected to persecution or destruction. Secondly, it is the expropriation of the property of the
identified target group that takes place; thirdly, the identified group has to occupy a unique territory;
fourthly, the group has to be expelled, and finally significant number of the group members has to be
killed. Although in reality those stages can swiftly take place one after another, it has been noted that
depending on circumstances, first stages of persecution may be conducted in public, whereas later
stages are usually shrouded in secrecy. (Ton Zwaan "On the Etiology and Genesis of Genocides and
Mass Crimes Targeting Specific Groups")
OBJECTIVES:
The purpose of this project is to introduce a universal educational model for interpretation and
understanding of the genocide mechanism (causes and consequences). The model is exclusively based
on facts, without comments or conclusions by the author that might lead user to any premeditated
opinion. The Project will be available to general public in several stages. Firstly, it is envisaged as
communication tool for young people of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, and at later stages, for
youth across the region and the world. The project uses variety of communication channels: Internet,
public screenings, presentations, lectures and discussions. On July 11, 2010 DVD "Srebrenica,
mapping genocide" will be published as a special addition to "Oslobođenje" daily.
