Healthy Lives:
Superheroes Protect Angolan Children
Recent qualitative studies in Angola have looked in-depth at behavioral
determinants for using a mosquito net to prevent malaria and for treating
water to prevent water-borne illnesses. Results from both studies indicate that mothers know the importance of both of these behaviors when
it comes to the health of their children; however, they are not consistent
in either net use or water treatment. To influence these practices in order
to change these important behaviors with mothers PSI/Angola is using
a different entry point to get the message across: through their children.
The PSI/Angola superhero team, the Esquadrão da Prevenção (Prevention Squad), has arrived, each with different super powers that come in
handy to fight childhood illnesses.
Comandante Seguro e Salvo is faster than the speed of light and has his
magic arm band that discharges the mosquito net, Seguro e Salvo, just
in the nick of time to cover children’s beds before they go to sleep. With
the Comandante, children are safe from malaria.
Capitã Certeza is the blue-haired superhero who has an enchanted belt
with bottles of the water treatment, Certeza, which makes water safe to
drink. The Capitã is makes sure that children are safe from water-borne
illnesses.
The Tenente Sabonete is the goofball of the bunch, playing with soap
bubbles and clean water to encourage children to wash their hands with
soap.
And the inventor behind the heroes, the guy who made it all happen,
Doutor Maguxi, makes sure the Comandante arrives on time, the Capitã
treats water before it’s used and the Tenente shares his soap bubbles
with children all over Angola. Most important, if prevention efforts fail for
some reason, Dr. Maguxi ensures that treatment is provided at the health
centers.
Through television, radio, mascots, life-size posters and comic books,
these cartoon characters have already reached the hearts of children.
Little Comandantes are standing up at kindergartens playing the role of
a superhero. Children are telling their mothers that they can’t drink that
water because Capitã Certeza hasn’t made it clean. It’s through the influence of children that there will be superhero moms and dads all over
Angola protecting their children from malaria and water-borne illnesses.

Super Heróis Agora Protegendo Crianças Angolanas!
Recentes estudos qualitativos em Angola tem olhado em profundidade, os
determinantes comportamentais para o uso de um mosquiteiro para evitar
a malária e para o tratamento da água para evitar doenças transmitidas
pela água. Os resultados de ambos os estudos indicam que as mães sabem a importância desses dois comportamentos quando se trata da saúde
dos seus filhos. No entanto, elas não fazem ainda o uso consistente de
qualquer deles. Para influenciar estas práticas, a fim de alterar estes comportamentos importantes com as mães, PSI/Angola está usando um ponto
de entrada diferente para passar a mensagem: através de seus filhos!
A equipe de Super-heróis do PSI/Angola, o Esquadrão da Prevenção,
chegou com cada um deles diferentes super poderes que são úteis para
combater doenças da infância.
Comandante Seguro e Salvo é mais rápido que a velocidade da luz e tem
a sua banda o braço mágico que as descargas do mosquiteiro, Seguro e
Salvo, apenas em cima da hora para cobrir as camas das crianças antes
de irem dormir. Com o Comandante, as crianças estão a salvo de malária.
Capita Certeza é a Super heroína de cabelo azul que tem um cinto encantado com garrafas de tratamento de água, Certeza, fazendo a água
segura para beber. A Capita tem certeza de que as crianças estão a salvo
de doenças transmitidas pela água.
O Tenente Sabonete é o bobão do grupo, brincando com bolhas de sabão
e água limpa para incentivar as crianças a lavarem as mãos com sabão.
E o inventor por trás dos heróis, o cara que fez isso tudo acontecer, Doutor
Maguxi, garante o Comandante chega a tempo, que o Capita trata toda a
água antes de ser usada, e que o Tenente compartilha as bolhas de sabão
com as crianças em toda Angola. O mais importante, se os esforços de
prevenção falham por algum motivo, o Dr. Maguxi garante que o tratamento é prestado nos centros de saúde.
Através da televisão, rádio, mascotes, cartazes em tamanho natural, bandas desenhadas, essas personagens de desenhos animados já atingiram
o coração das crianças. Pequenos Comandantes estão em pé nas escolas a exercer o papel de um super-herói. As crianças estão contando as
suas mães que não podem beber a água porque Capita Certeza não a
tornou limpa. É através da influência das crianças que haverá mamãs e
papais super-herói em toda Angola a protegerem-se contra a malária e as
doenças transmitidas pela água.
