Since being open to the public in 2007, MESA; the Southwest Script Museum has established an important milestone within national museology, becoming a cultural reference point, especially for the surrounding region within which the range of its study is inserted, namely the Alentejo and the Algarve. In the two years following the inauguration of the exhibition “Almodôvar-territory in writing”, the museum developed an archaeological investigation project in parallel, entitled ESTELA. This gave rise to a deepening of historical knowledge about these communities and places in the Almodôvar region that were inhabited by our ancestors during the Iron Age, more than 2,500 years ago. This work allowed us to go ahead with a new exhibition, which is now to be inaugurated, entitled “Life and Death in the Iron Age”. We are aware that there is still a lot more to be discovered and clarified regarding the way of life and culture of these people who created and used this Southwest Script. This new exhibition seeks to fulfill one of the fundamental aims of “MESA” which is to bring the results of the scientific investigation, promoted by the Almodôvar Local Authority, to the general public via its museum. At the same time being aware that the Museum is, in this way, responding to the challenges for which it was created, it is important to highlight the contribution that we are giving to the development of the archaeological and historical knowledge of this territory that we now refer to as Portugal. PROFESSOR AMÍLCAR GUERRA FACULDADE DE LETRAS DE LISBOA The understanding of the Southwest script and its characteristics, is without a shadow of doubt, an important step to get to know the context within which it was developed, the society that produced it. But, the contrary is equally true. That is, to study the setting within which this first writing was developed, gather the material elements that are associated with it and to realize how the interconnection of these realities becomes one of the ways to understand the significance of the written ESTELA and their historical cultural significance. For this reason it was decided to add a new component to the Museum's opening exhibition, with its focus on epigraphy, a component just as relevant as the first one, and one which is the focus of the ESTELA project, so opportunely supported by the Almodôvar Local Authority. The results of work that had already been developed in this sphere, not only elements associated with the producers of these monuments but equally those represented in their work and, furthermore, all those with whom they shared their lives, are brought together in this way in the Museum. On exhibition is data about the traces left by these settlements, about the tombs in which their mortal remains were deposited, and about the objects that were used in life and which they took with them to the grave. In short, fragments of life are represented as a two faced reality: relating to this transitory existence, immortalized in the gravestones that are brought together here, but also that of another reality, beyond the grave, intuitively seen through feelings and rites that these objects represent. From both, we gather the sense of the durability of the material remains that they have left us, whether written or not. In short, things that lead us to think of the witnesses that we produce and bequeath to future generations and the image that they will form of our existence and way of thinking. 010 011 the territory The Southwest script is to be found dispersed over an area far from the Mediterranean's primordial influences, far from the centre of the economic, social and cultural world of Antiquity. It was here, within the bounds of the Southwest peninsula, between the plains of what is today the Lower Alentejo and the mountain ridge that separates this region from the present day Algarve, that the oldest writing of the peninsula was concentrated. One notices within this general framework of the interior of the country, an identity that is characteristic of this mountainous region. For this reason, the inland area became so special, where the largest collection of stone tablets/steles with the Southwest script is brought together, far from the centres of this Mediterranean world, but whose knowledge influenced its system of signs, namely those with a Phoenician origin. This territory of hills and valleys claimed to be, in contrast to the present day, not a depopulated, barrier laden place but rather one with a large amount of settlements: a hilly landscape, the Mú and Caldeirão mountain ridge, where a variety of water courses have their source and where the crests of the mountains crossed throughout time with the traditional routes to reach the craggy Algarve inland area and the Algarve coast, the Guadiana valley with its tributaries and the plains and fields of Ourique. A thoroughfare, the territory of the southwest script was between these two worlds: one with its somewhat rigid, mountainous borders with the coast, and, the other with its lightly rolling relief of the Alentejana plains. A mosaic made up of different territorial units in a close physical-social complementary way. Toning down the differences between these two worlds however, did not mean that they no longer existed in economic, social and cultural terms. But we can only talk about one Iron Age – more than 2,500 years ago – with influences marked by the emerging civilizations from the East and the centre of the Mediterranean, dispersed by the settlements on the Algarve coast and the Lower Guadiana, or appearing from the River Sado onwards. These influences seem to have arrived later in this marginal area of the stone tablets/steles. The human occupation of the inland area of the Southwest Peninsula in the Iron Age, would have been made up of a population of small, dispersed, rural settlements. This type of occupation of the present territory in former days was consolidated between the 7th and 5th centuries B.C in a dense landscape, whose parallel can be seen in the present image of the Alentejana hamlets. This progressive intensification of the occupation of the territory and in the exploration of resources, was accompanied by significant cultural change: the Southwest script, rectangular funerary and domestic architecture and religious manifestations all witness a connection with the Mediterranean world. Social and power structures becoming more complex also imply the creation of surplus, alterations to customs and the fashion of ostentation, which most certainly resulted in transformations in social and political power. A divergence in the timescale of the chronology attributed to the Southwest script and that of materials registered from archaeological sources during the first millennium B.C has been confirmed at present, within this framework of significant cultural alterations. But the realities and materials reveal and, are the result of, a way of being and living that lasted for various centuries and which structured these communities. These populations of a rural nature were social units linked by family ties, of which those of a larger size would have been able to lead and coordinate the others–either in social or productive terms – without, however, obvious signs of a hierarchy being revealed, as those of Fernão Vaz's examples (Ourique) found on the banks of the River Mira, or Neves 1 and 2 and Corvo 1 (Castro Verde), and Monte Beirão (Almodôvar) situated in the proximity of the Oeiras river.. The buildings would have been organized around a patio or porch with a stone plinth for the walls, raised straightaway using earth and coverings made of perishable material There would have been a base division with a fireplace, used for various domestic tasks, with adjoining storehouses and other functional areas having compacted earthen floors.. We can assume that there would have been flagstone floors in the more important divisions.. The daily living of this rural world was a domestic way of life, with few signs of wealth or specialized productivity or exploration. Pastoral activities, agriculture, metallurgy and the exploration of forest and river resources were carried out simultaneously. 016 017 A region that was wetter then, within a landscape of woods and dense scrublands, mostly made up of holm oak and cork oak, a hunting territory that included deer, wild boar, and rabbits. The scrubland was less dense in the grazing areas used mainly for sheep, goats and pigs but also including cattle. The settlements were situated in valleys with gentle slopes, in tilled, fertile plains near the water courses where clearings in the dense vegetation would certainly have been made for fallow ground, to increase the gain from cereal growing cultures for bread (wheat and rye) supplemented with vegetables and harvesting crops. The extraction of minerals such as copper put the finishing touches to the exploration of forest, agriculture and livestock resources, and has been considered the main natural wealth and the root of commercial bartering in the Mediterranean world. This dynamic was mediated and linked with the Guadiana (Mértola), the river basins of the Mira and the Sado, and the crossings of the mountainous ridge to reach the Algarve coastal area. Some populations would have added cultural activities to their daily ones with the occasional appearance of indications related to the Southwest script. Along the middle River Guadiana basin, their appearance can be highlighted in places of a sacred nature such as Castro da Azougada (Moura), from where an important set of inscriptions has come, being in the majority of cases, signs. However, this literacy is distinguished from the epigraphy, before and absent here and where the direct association with context of dwelling is still not clear, even today. To conclude, from the end of the 5th century B.C fortified settlements (as is the case of Mesas do Castelinho), were consolidated all over the Southwest peninsular, including the area of the present day Almodôvar Local Authority. This does not signify the disappearance of the small open places (for example, Monte da Atafona and Lagoinha),although within this new phase, before the Roman conquest, the fortified settlements were those which retrieved the function of structuring the territory. This is also the moment when the steles and the funerary graves stop being marks on the landscape. The largest set of Iron Age burial grounds known in Portugal is directly related to the world of the stone tablets/steles, meaning that the Southwest script was associated with funerary monuments. Situated near the settlements, they were these communities' preferred way of social representation and, at present, are the greatest witness in the landscape of this region. These first monuments in the Bronze Age tradition are made up of circular structures with a rectangular frame in the centre (as in Mouriços - Almodôvar). These seem to develop to those with a rectangular plan with detached chambers, at times staggered, and those with a ditch dug out of the rocks (as in Tavilhão Almodôvar -, Pêgo e Mealha Nova - Ourique). The final moment, already seen in the second half of the 1st millennium B.C., is represented with smaller graves with a sub-quadrangle plan, open on one of the sides (as in Atafona Almodôvar).Alongside this funerary architecture, there are others that can also be found in the Southwest peninsular: some of a greater simplicity, in schist (Gregórios Silves), or of a greater complexity as in Bringel in the outskirts of Beja. The burial grounds, in the majority of cases groups of similar graves or those of a different typology, would have been covered by small tumuli – low lying artificial mounds of stone and earth, sometimes with collections of white quartz that would have made them stand out in the landscape. In the interior, the ditches, chambers and frames housed the bodies, which in the majority of cases would have been buried (inhumed), although in some circumstances they would have been cremated and deposited in urns. By degrees, these came to characterize the more recent funerary rites. These burials, seen in the context of the 6th and 4th centuries B.C., are accompanied by funerary objects placed next to the body or urn. They included ceramic objects of a local/regional production (cups which could have contained some type of food), iron objects (like knives and lances) or decorative objects or those from garments, made in bronze, silver and gold (including bracelets, rings and necklaces), as well as sets of necklace beads made from a glassy substance, either with a spot of colour surrounded by a ring of another colour or with only a single colour, a reflection of the commercial trading with the Mediterranean world. 022 023 LIMITE DO TUMULUS The burial grounds are sets of grouped graves, but deducing from the number of tombs, there would not have been a place for all the individuals of the community. These would have been only for those who, according to the group's criteria and due to the importance they would have carried out for the group's cohesion, stood out for a variety of functions within the heart of the community. Thus, the burial grounds appear as a territory's reference points, to which successive generations will legitimize their ties with their ancestors and the surrounding environment. This is the reason why this world of the dead is not only found superimposed on the landscape but is also related to it with a prehistoric megalithism stretching over miles – localized in Almodôvar on the tableland of Monte da Antas or on the mountain tops at Boavista or Malhão. In the same way, the distribution of the stone tablets/steles with inscriptions came to coincide with those from the Bronze Age with iconography (as is the case of Mouriços and Corte do Freixo - Almodôvar). The stone tablets/steles, with the Southwest script from the Iron Age burial grounds, bearing in mind that that the majority appear as fragmentary elements that have been reused, could have functioned as part of the graves but adapted to be reused in a symbolic way. The undeniable association of these elements with the world of the dead, and the present scarcity of facts and primary contexts, should allow other hypotheses to be considered. It seems certain that from the outset, they would have functioned as collective representations, shared by the communities that created them at different times and in different contexts.
