BRAM Opens New Base in Niterói
Submitted by Eduardo Silva and André Medeiros – In November 2012, after five months of construction, Bram Offshore opened the
doors to their new location in Niterói. Located near the Port of Niterói with easy access to the President Costa e Silva, or Rio-Niterói,
Bridge, this well-appointed facility is designed to meet the current needs of Bram’s growing operations in Niterói with plans in
place for future expansion.
The Bram Niterói complex boasts a state-of-the-art occupational medical clinic, which is nearing completion. The clinic will
accommodate employee medical and dental consultations and examinations, annual tests required for employees’ Occupational
Health Certificate (ASO), and health screenings and wellness checks for employees undergoing pre-embarkation training at the
facility. The new clinic will offer increased efficiency and a substantial cost savings to BRAM operations, as well as better control of
medical documentation and, most importantly, improved employee healthcare.
Remembering Bruce Kay
Submitted by Aldo Júnior – BRAM recently honored the late Bruce Kay with the christening of Hull B131, a
303.9-foot platform supply vessel bearing his name. The BRUCE KAY, built by Navship, was delivered for
operations on March 27, 2013.
Kay, a long-time Chouest employee, oversaw the construction of Navship during the time of Brazil’s famous “virtual shipyards” when
most shipyards existed only on paper. On property with degraded vegetation serving as pasture for oxen and horses, Kay procured
the necessary environmental licensing to build Navship, a facility that today has the highest levels of productivity and quality in Brazil.
Navship opened under Kay’s leadership in 2004, and he continued to oversee operations until his untimely death in August 2012.
Kay was a natural leader with a wide range of knowledge and experience. He set the standards of excellence that have made
Navship the superior shipyard that it is today.

Chevron Awards
CAMPOS CONTENDER
Submitted by
Artur Aguiar
Submitted by C-Innovation – HOLIDAY Team
Shell has contracted the HOLIDAY, a 288’ anchor handling tug
supply vessel, to perform light subsea construction tasks at
Campos Basin fields BC-10 and Bijupira-Salema.
The work will comprise of a series of subsea hardware
installations to include Christmas trees, tubing head spools and
flying leads.
Since HOLIDAY’s arrival in Brazilian waters in September 2012,
its crew has safely and successfully installed 15 tubing head
spools (22 tons each) and 7 Christmas trees (50 tons each).
The HOLIDAY has performed a number of other tasks during
this time, including the transfer of life boats to the FPSO
Espirito Santo, allowing Shell to increase the vessel’s POB
(persons on board) capacity and optimizing their essential
activities.
Additional ROV activites aboard HOLIDAY have included oil leak
investigation and repair, valve intervention, commissioning,
products and assets recovery, and replacement and vessel
support.
Google Drive
Submitted by Natália Lopes
Google Drive is an online service that allows you to store files
remotely in Google’s cloud. Bram employees can use Google
Drive to share business documents without having to send
them by e-mail. Furthermore, it allows the author to edit and
review the shared document, while allowing all users to view
changes in real time. When sharing a document on the Google
Drive, the author can chose to allow viewers to either read or
edit documents.
Google Drive is especially useful for Bram employees as it
allows greater flexibility in communication between support
departments and the vessel fleet, ensuring that all employees
have access to updated versions of documents at all times. To
access Google Drive, visit drive.google.com.
Certification Renewals
2
Bram Offshore recently renewed its ISO 9001, ISO 14001
and OHSAS 18001 certifications. The process consisted of an
external audit to verify the compliance of our management
system, which is designed around the requirements of these
certifications. It is vital that all employees understand Bram’s
policies, procedures, documents and forms.
Managers and the
vice president of
Chevron visited
the CAMPOS
CONTENDER
to recognize
the vessel’s two
crews with Chevron’s 5th Campaign of Improvement
and Recognition award in acknowledgment of their
outstanding efforts in the prevention of slips, trips and falls.

Cerebral Vascular Accident
A cerebral vascular accident (CVA),
generally referred to as a stroke, is the
most common cause of death in Brazil
and the third most common cause in the United States.
There are two types of
stroke: Ischemic is the
mildest form, accounting
for 80% of all cases, and
hemorrhagic is the most
severe form, accounting
for 20% of all cases.
The main risk factors for stroke are:
1) Hypertension, or high blood pressure
2)Diabetes
3)Smoking
4)Dyslipidemia
5) Family history or an age greater than 60
The signs and symptoms of stroke are:
1) Hemiplegia/hemiparesis – paralysis or weakness in one
side of the body, including the face and tongue
2) Slurred speech/tongue deviation – difficulty speaking
and lateral deviation of the tongue
3) Change in level of consciousness – sudden confusion,
drowsiness, lethargy or even coma
After recognizing the signs and symptoms of a stroke, ask
the patient to:
•Smile.
• Say a complete sentence.
• Raise both arms.
Treatment
In the event of a stroke, seek immediate medical
attention. Doctors will decide on the best method of
treatment depending on the type of stroke – ischemic or
hemorrhagic.
Prevention
Leading a healthy lifestyle, with a healthy diet and regular
physical exercise, is the best way to reduce your risk of
stroke.

In August 2013, Bram Offshore opened the doors to its new
Dynamic Positioning (DP) Training Center at the Macaé Base
in Rio de Janeiro. The facility features training modules for
in-house and third-party dynamic positioning operator (DPO)
candidates. As part of Bram’s continuous commitment to
improving its services, the facility utilizes state-of-the-art DP
training labs with software from Marine Technologies (MT). The
software includes multiple models to provide training for a full
range of vessels.
Representatives
from the Nautical
Institute (NI) visited
the center in early
August to conduct
an audit of the
facility, ensuring
that the center is
in compliance with
the NI’s standards.
The audit team was
impressed with the
new facility and the professionalism of its training team, and
the certificate of accreditation was issued on August 6, 2013.
Bram’s DP Training Center combines the latest simulation
software from the Transas Group with an integrated ECDIS
(Electronic Chart Display and Information System).
The DP labs, with six individual training stations, are designed
to be among the most comprehensive available, allowing just
one student per station for maximum hands-on experience.
The DP control training system is outfitted with a built-in
simulator offering a realistic virtual response to the operations
initiated by each student. This allows students to gain realworld experience with the bridge radar, Transas and ECDIS
systems, ship’s conning display and the vessel’s visual channel.
Bram’s DP Training
Center offers both
introductory and
advanced DP
courses. Upon
course completion,
students are eligible
to apply for a
Nautical Institute’s
Dynamic Positioning Operator Certificate.
Managing Editor: Quelli Lima
Editorial Support: Brent Lirette, Michele Costa and
Monica Falgout
Design: AMG Creative
The advanced DP simulator includes an instructor station and
a bridge simulator based on MT’s Bridge Mate system. The DP
Class 2 simulator features dual redundancy, no single-point
failure, failure detection, fault isolation, switch over to hot
standby, and comparison of sensor data between computers.
Suggestions
This exceptional level of training offered at the new training
center will help ensure that Bram’s officers are prepared to
operate its technologically-advanced vessels at the highest
level.
If you have any suggestions for Correio Marítimo, please
email them to [email protected].
