Calonectris diomedea pertence à Ordem dos
Procellariiformes (grupo de aves marinhas constituído pelos albatrozes, as
pardelas e os painhos). Esta espécie é constituída por duas subespécies. A
subespécie C. d. borealis, também conhecida como subespécie atlântica,
nidifica nas ilhas da Macaronésia (Açores, Madeira, Canárias) enquanto a
subespécie C. d. diomedea nidifica no Mediterrâneo.

Açores: destino para lua-de-mel
Todos os anos, os cagarros escolhem os Açores para acasalar e
criar o seu filhote desse ano. Podem fazê-lo durante trinta anos,
desde que atingem a vida adulta, aos 7 anos de idade, até cerca
dos 40 anos, a longevidade máxima conhecida.
A grande viagem para sul
Quando saem dos ninhos, os cagarros juvenis com apenas 3
meses de idade, fazem a sua primeira grande viagem de
centenas de quilómetros pelo oceano Atlântico.
De março a outubro, todas as noites é possível ouvir por todas
as ilhas dos Açores o interessante som dos cagarros de
regresso às colónias.
No entanto, ainda não dominam o voo perfeitamente, e ficam
desorientados pelas luzes artificiais uma vez que devido à sua
inexperiência não distinguem as luzes urbanas das estrelas
(que se julga utilizarem para orientação). Portanto, um
juvenil encandeado aterra em qualquer sítio, onde poderá
permanecer sem tentar descolar, correndo perigo de vida,
vulneráveis aos veículos e a outros animais.
A população açoriana de cagarros representa cerca de 65% da
população mundial da espécie e de 75% da população da
subespécie Calonectris diomedea borealis.

Calonectris diomedea
belongs to the Order Procellariiformes (seabird group
including the albatrosses, shearwaters and petrels). The
species has two subspecies. The subspecies C. d. borealis, also
known as Atlantic subspecies, nests on the islands of
Macaronesia (Azores, Madeira, Canaries) while the subspecies
C. d. diomedea nests in the Mediterranean.
Azores: honeymoon destination
Every year, the Cory’s Shearwaters choose the Azores to
mate and raise their newborn young. They can do it for
thirty years, from the time they reach adulthood, at 7 years
of age, to the age of 40 around, the maximum known
longevity for the species.
The great trip to the South
When they leave the nest, the young Cory’s Shearwaters, of
only 3 months old, make their first major journey of
hundreds of kilometers across the Atlantic Ocean.
Every night, from March to October and on all over the
Azorean islands, one can hear the interesting sound of the
Cory’s Shearwaters returning to their colonies.
However, they still do not master the flight perfectly and
become disoriented by the artificial lights, because due to
their inexperience they cannot distinguish the urban lights
from the stars (which, it is believed, are used for guidance).
Therefore, a dazzled juvenile lands anywhere, and can remain
in the chosen landing spot without trying to take off,
endangering its life, vulnerable to vehicles and other animals.
The Azorean population of Cory’s Shearwaters represents about 65%
of the world population and 75% of the population of the subspecies
Calonectris diomedea borealis.
