In the third millennium we face a number of new anatomical and physiological knowledge showing how posture affects occlusion, and when this is locked in a wrong position, then chewing acts on posture. Chewing is a fundamental activity for our existence, so the jaw muscles and TMJ are structurally unique in the human body. It is important that the load is distributed equally to the right and left to avoid dangerous overloads on the teeth or worse on implants. The mandible fits every posture in order to allow the shredding of the food but what are the effects on the body when the jaw is no longer free to adapt, because some teeth have been lost or have worn? On the other hand, sometimes it is an incorrect swallowing tocreate blocks occlusal and for that it is crucial to investigate this function before starting orthodontic or TMJ disorders treatments. It is known that the tongue is the most powerful muscle we have, so it isbetter to have it on our side, otherwise we should know that it is possible to reeducatetongue activity with a proper gym, the myofunctional therapy. As a matter of fact, while Angle’s classification is a very well-known way to define malocclusions, we use several and different approaches to swallowing, often missing some very important signs that would permit us to understand immediately the seriousness of the situation. In this seminar clinical examples of the relation between either malocclusion, or incorrect swallowing and very frequent chronical postural problems are shown, like neck pain, brachialgia, headaches, up to dizziness and tinnitus. By the end of the course, the student will have learned a global approach to the “dental world”, passing through osteopathic concepts and techniques.”
