Since 1901, Made in Bavaria stands for High Tech, Innovation, Quality and Reliability. BavAIRia e.V. manages the region aerospace cluster, an initiative of the Bavarian State Government, to support stronger links and increase the global competitiveness of its stakeholders. The focus of aerospace activities is the Munich metropolitan region. With over 500 members BavAIRia’s goal as a cluster management organisation is to bring together the various stakeholders from industry, science and politics in order to facilitate cooperation projects for strengthening global competitiveness and management of Bavaria´s aerospace as well as satellite navigation (SatNav). Situated right next to the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich, bavAIRia is well connected to many potential customers, suppliers and partners across the aerospace supply chain in Bavaria and beyond. Especially small and medium sized companies benefit from its services. The main task of bavAIRia e.V. is to stimulate aerospace innovation, technology development and growth by networking processes between industry, research, development institutions and policy makers. Bavaria is a global leader in the aeronautics and space sector and with the advent of Galileo (GATE, site: www.gatetested.com) – Europe’s developing global navigation satellite system - the state is well positioned to become a leading center for satellite navigation. The region offers one of the most concentrated aerospace, defense and satellite navigation markets in the world. There is a focus on the construction of military aircraft, propulsion systems, helicopters and subsystems as well as devices required for these systems. Further key excellence areas are structures, drives and solar generators for spacecraft and satellites. bavAIRia e.V. is a PEMAS partner in the European project CARE: Promoting the know-how of regions in Green Aviation topics, including the use of GNSS for Aircraft trajectories optimization. (Site: www.care-aero.eu/theproject/project-description.html) Bavaria is one of two centres of the German aerospace industry, with 1/3 of German aerospace industry based there, whether in terms of employees, companies or turnover: • 61,000 employees; • 550 separate companies (out of which 90% are SMEs, including airlines and airports); • 7 billion € of revenues in manufacturing aerospace sector. Page 3/10 Informação e Representação de PME Projecto nº 17068 - AAC nº 01/SIAC/2010 DL 2.2-1-008 Furthermore Bavaria is one of the few international aviation locations to boast a complete value – added chain: • 4th tier subcontractors – specialising in production of particular components and specific processes; • 3rd tier subcontractors - produce machine components and sub assemblies; • 2nd tier subcontractors make various subassemblies and sections; • 1st tier subcontractors do major assembly/manufacture without assembling complete units; • OEM – design (develop) and assemble or manufacture complete units; • MRO – maintenance, repair and overhaul. The Bavarian aerospace cluster covers almost complete value chains in various aerospace segments. It is a nerve center for the European space industry with several key organisations and with four OEMs world-class located there: EADS-Astrium, Cassidian, Eurocopter and MTU Aero Engines. In short, the regional advantages are based on: Well-qualified workforce There is a key emphasis on higher education in Bavaria. Bavaria is proud of its modern and competitive educational environment with eight universities offering state-of-the-art study courses related to the aerospace sector. Research and training at Bavaria’s universities provides a constant supply of highly qualified personnel. In Munich alone more than 200 students graduate annually from programs in Aeronautics and Space at the Technical University, the University of Applied Sciences and the University of the Bundeswehr. Optimum Infrastructure Bavarian airports provide a superb infrastructure for the globally networked aerospace industry. With the new addition of Terminal 2 at Munich Airport, the Nuremberg Airport as well as a number of regional airports, Bavaria provides optimum conditions for a fast and efficient transfer of goods and convenient travel. Access to funding In Bavaria the venture capital organization Bayern Kapital Risikokapitalbeteiligungs GmbH supports national and international venture capital and private equity funds. The investment of private (lead) investors can then be tripled by Bayern Kapital and the tbg Technologie-Beteiligungs-Gesellschaft investing the same amount. The innovation-friendly economic policy offers extensive development programmes and initiatives – like, for example, the Cluster Initiative or Bavarian funding for aerospace applications. Furthermore, the strategy programme or the high-tech initiative Digital Bavaria of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs support the industry.
