Emily: A entrevista é sobre o rádio … você pode dizer só para a gente que vai escutar de onde
você é e um pouco de sua historia para que as pessoas sabem.
The interview is about radio … can you say, just for the people who are going to listen, where
you're from and a little about your history just so they know?
Alex: Mmhmm, Eu... naci no Brasil, São Paulo, eu morei no Brasil até dezessete dezoito anos
quando eu vim como estudiante intercambista internacional. Eu morei em Missouri por un ano em
ai voltei por Brasil um ano e meio, morei no Japão por dois. Depois na California por doze anos.
Mmm... I was born in Brazil, São Paulo, Iived in Brazil until seventeen eighteen years ago when I
am (to the US) as an international exchange student. I lived in Missouri for a year and then I
returned to Brazil for a year and a half, I lived in Japan two years. Then in California for 12 years.
E: Você fala japonês?
Do you speak Japanese?
A: Falo poco.
I speak a little.
E: O que estava fazendo no Japão?
What were you doing in Japan?
A: E... eu fui para Japão com a minha primera esposa e eu trabalhava como decasséguis
entende decasséguis? Foi no epoca do boom no Japão quando estavam importando mão de
obra no Japão. Então trabalhei numa fabrica pelos primeiros tres meses depois eu trabalhei para
Shimano … você conhece Shimano? Mountain bike parts?
Eh... I went to Japan with my first wife and I worked as a Dekasegi (A term used to refer to ethnic
Japanese people who have migrated to Japan, taking advantage of Japanese citizenship and
immigration laws to escape economic instability in South America. The majority are Brazilians. In
Alex's case I don't think he is of Japanese descendent – perhaps his first wife was.) Do you
understand the term Dekasegi? It was in the epoch of the boom in Japan when they were
importing labor to Japan. I worked in a factory for the first three months and then I worked for
Shimano... do you know Shimano? “Mountain bike parts?”
E: Ahh sim... Eu tenho um … o meu bicicleta tem partes de Shimano.
Ahh yes... I have a... my bike has Shimano parts.
A: Eu trabalhei para Shimano na area de teste de qualidade de ingenieria … ah e depois eu
trabalhei eu mudei para Tokyo e eu trabalhei num restaurante em Tokyo.
I worked for Shimano as a quality test engineer... and after that I moved to Tokyo and worked
in a restaurant in Tokyo.
E: Que bonito! Eu não sabia todo isso de você. Não é importante para a entrevista é só por
interes.
How neat! I didn't know that about you. Its not important for the interview, just out of interest.
A: Curiosidade.

E: Agora você mora no Connecticut e trabalha como em... como que é a palavra?
And now you live in Connecticut and work as... what's the word?
A: Eu trabalho, eu sou um pastor de uma igreja metodista. Faz um ano e medio que eu estou
como pastor desse igreja metodista. E dou aula de yoga na Yale e na Quinnipiac University.
I work, I'm a pastor in a Methodist church. Its been a year and a half now that I'm working as
a pastor in this Methodist church. And I teach yoga classes at Yale and Quinnipiac University.
E: Perfeito. E você gosta de escutar rádio?
Wonderful. And do you like to listen to radio?
A: Gosto. Muito na verdade. A pesar de nesses ultimos anos eu tenho escutado menos musica,
quando eu trabalhei como arquitecto na California antes de vir para o seminario, para Yale, eu
escutava musica dia enteiro, trabalhando. Mas nessos ultimos anos não mas eu escuto
Pandora...
I do. Very much in truth. Although in recent years I have listened to less music, when I worked
as an architect in California before coming to seminary, to Yale, I listened to music all day,
working. But in recent years no more. But I listen to Pandora...
E: É quasi o mesmo
Its almost the same.
A: É quasi o mesmo, é. E eu escuto NPR no carro direito.
Its almost the same, yes. And I listen to NPR in the car.
E: Eu também gosto de NPR. Você quando morava no Brasil também escutava rádio?
I also like NPR. When you lived in Brazil did you also listen to radio?

A: Escutava. No Brasil eu gostava da 89, o nome da rádio é o 89 de São Paulo, também gostava
da Rádio Brasil. Eu tenho uma app no meu telefone para rádios no Brasil. Rádio Mix também que
eu gostava muito.
I did. In Brazil I liked 89, the name of the radio is 89 of Sao Paulo, I also liked Radio Brazil. I
have an app on my telephone for Brazilian radios. I also liked Radio Mix a lot.
E: E esta es... estas estações são de música ou de noticias ou como são?
And this is... these stations are music stations or news or what are they like?
A: Não tenho entendido. Fallou... a conneção …

E: São de noticias, são de música? As estações que você gosta. De música.
Are they news, are the music? The stations that you like. Of music.
A: São de música. Tem o rádio USPI que é meio como NPR que eu gosto muito no Brasil. Então
é uma mistura de noticia e música.
They're music. There is also radio USPI, which is almost like NPR, which I like a lot in Brazil.
So it is a mixture of news and music.
E: E você... eu sei que você gosta de bailar
And you... I know you like to dance.
A: Sim
Yes.
E: Você gosta de escutar música para bailar ou... o que tipo de música você escuta no rádio?
Do you like to listen to dance music or... what kind of music do you listen to on the radio?
A: Eh Eu não gosto muito de música dance pra... pra... na radio. Quando estou escutando rádio
eu prefiro o MPB música popular brasileira. Eu também gosto .. aqui como não tem rádio que
tocam MPB eu escuto indie much more... um... mais do que
Eh... I don't like dance music much for for... on the radio. When I am listening to the radio I
prefer MPB, Brazilian popular music. I also like... here as there aren't radios that play MPB, I
listen to radio indie “much more” … um... more than...
E: No português no português!

A: Mais do que … eu não gosta de escutar música tipo dance disco no rádio
More than... I don't like to listen to dance or club music on the radio.
E: As estações de rádio no Brasil que tipo de música tocam normalmente? È de MPB ou uma
variação ou como é?
What type of music do radio stations in Brazil normally play? Is it MPB or a variety(this is what
I meant to say... I think the actual translation of what I said is variation) or what is it like?

A: A rádio USPI é MPB música brasileira tem uma outra também que não estou lembrando o
nome, é outra rádio que é música brasileira também mais as outras tipo rádio, a Rádio Brasil é
uma mistura, é música brasileira, rock brasileira, é rock em inglês ... tipo ... o seja norteamericano
o europeo o inglês mas é uma mistura.
Radio USPI is MPB and this also another that I'm forgetting the name of, its another radio
which is Brazilian music also, but the other radios, Radio Brazil is a mix, its Brazilian music,
Brazilian rock, rock in English … that is … either North American or European or English but
its a mixture.
E: E você acha o rádio tem muita influença nas pessoas, a música que escutam?
And do you think that radio has a lot of influence on people, on what kind of music they listen
to?

A: Sim … esta mudando muito agora, né, com as rádios virtuais mas a rádio no Brasil ainda
continue muito popular. As pessoas escutam muito rádio. Música e um poco de noticias também
mais pouco... é mais para entretenimento no Brasil
Yes... its changing a lot now, you know, with virtual radios, but radio still continues to be
popular in Brazil. People listen to a lot of radio. Music and a little news as well, but little. Its
more for entertainment in Brazil.
E: As pessoas têm uma... como... tem tipo locutor no rádio tipo um host … você acha que têm
tipo uma relação com o host, a pessoa que escutam con frecuença.
Do people have a … like... there are sort of hosts on the radio... do you think they have a sort
of relationship with the host, a person who listens often.
A: Repete mais uma vez.

E: Disculpe .. quero dizer … o host, as pessoas que escutam com frecuencia este host têm tipo
uma relação com ele ou como é para você? Você sente que conhece como é a pessoa ou esta
pessoa tem uma influença?
I'm sorry, I meant to say, the host, the people who listen often to this host do they have a kind
of relationship with him or how do you see it? Do you feel like you know what a person is like
or does this person have influence?

A:Sim acho que tem. É. Tem muita gente que escuta e sente muito proximo do discjockey do DJ
do apresentador e tem uma rádio em particular no Brasil é um programa numa rádio que se
chama Pánico e era programa de rádio que era tão popular que fue para TV então os
apresentadores dessa rádio agora pasam essa programa na TV e aconteceu este show na
verdade não fue primeiro existe um outro apresentador de TV muito famoso que começou na
rádio também. Então têm muita gente que vai crossover da rádio a TV.
Yes, I think they do. Yes. There are many people who listen and feel very close to the DJ to
the host and there is a specific radio in Brazil which is a program on a radio which is called
Panico and it was a radio program which was so popular that it was moved onto TV so that
the hosts of this radio have now brought this program to TV and actually this show in truth
wasn't the first, there exists another very famous host who started on radio also. So there are
many people who do a crossover from radio to TV.
E:Essas pessoas têm tipo poder? No sentido de política ou... não sei.
And do these people have, like, power? In the political sense or... I don't know.

A: Tal vez não no sentido político mais num grau de cultura popular. Poder sobre a cultura
popular. A musica que se torna mais famosa .. a nova danza … moda
Perhaps not in the political sense but more at the level of popular culture. Power over popular
culture. The music that becomes most famous, the new dance hit, fashion...
E: Moda?
Fashion?
A: É, porque geralmente a danza, os grupos de música que eles promovem têm algum tipo de
roupa especifica ou particular acabasse torna se famosa porque esse música ou essa banda o
usão.
Yes, because generally the dance hit, the musical groups that they (the radio hosts) promote
have some type of specific or particular clothing which in the end becomes famous because
this music or this band wore it.
E: Interesante. Uma última pergunta ou se você pensa em alguma coisa interesante bom me
pôde dizer mas … tem uma diferença que você nota entre o rádio nos Estados Unidos e o Brasil?
Interesting. A last question or if you think of something interesting, well, you can tell me more
… this there a difference that you have noticed between radio in the US and in Brazil?

A: Eu acho que tinha mas agora não acho as diferenças estão sendo eliminados porque é muito
accesivél a rádio de um lugar para o outro e tipo os apresentadores obnoxious … esses
apresentadores que gritam e tiram gargalhada e fazem muita píada é são só homens asi
absurdos asi na rádio gritando … existe tanto lá quanto aquí. Ne? E é bem similar na verdade. O
tipo de humor que é usado na rádio do lá e de aquí. É muito commercial também então tem esta
semelança de muito muito commercial e humor barato e também a repetição né? Que é muito
comum na rádio do Brasil e aquí também. Toca a mesma música todo dia dez vezes ao dia.
I think that there used to be, but now I don't think so. I think the differences are being
eliminated because radio is very accessible from one place to another and, like, the
“obnoxious” hosts … those hosts that yell and burst into laughter and make lots of jokes and
are just absurd men there on the radio yelling … this exists as much there as here. No? It is
very similar in truth. The type of humor that is used on the radio there and here. Its also very
commercial and so there is this semblance of being very very commercial and cheap humor
and also the repetition, no? Which is very common in Brazilian radio and here also. They play
the same music every day times a day.
E: Mas antes não foi assim?
But before it wasn't like that?
A: Antes não eu acho que não era tanto assim.
Before no I think it wasn't so much like that
E: E que marca a diferença? É influença dos Estados Unidos ou … porque ha cambiado, porque
ha mudado?
And what marks the difference? Is it the influence of the US or... why has it changed? Why
has it changed?

A: Eu acho que …

E: Ou porque tem mudado … disculpe estou falando espanhol. É que eu falo espanhol muito
melhor que o português.
Or why has it changed... I'm sorry, I'm speaking Spanish. Its just that I speak Spanish much
better than Portuguese!

A: Não tenho exactamente certeza mas eu acho que é pelo … e … por razões economicas né?
Dineiro fala mais alto então quanto mais commercial mais dinheiro, repetindo as mismas músicas
acaba promovendo as artistas que as empresas, as gravadoras querem vender CDs né?
Promover que eles vendem ou altas vendes então é bem commercial eu acho tudo por razões
commerciais, né? E popular appeal, né? A historia de humor barato né? É mais facil de vender
de ser consumido.
I'm not completely positive but I think it is because of... eh... for economic reasons, no?
Money speaks the loudest so the more commercial the more money, repeating the same
songs they end up promoting the artists the companies, the record companies want to sell
CDs no? Promote that they sell or high sales, so it is very commercial and I think all for
commercial reasons, no? And “popular appeal,” no? The history of cheap humor, no? Its
more easy to sell for consumption.
E: Um pouco triste. Mas você dizia que tem um tipo NPR? Eso é program do governo ou
funcione igual que o NPR?
A little sad. But you said they have a kind of NPR? Is this a government program or does it work
just like NPR?

A: São... não.. e... se recebem algum subsidio governamental é poco. Rádio parecido com o NPR
são rádios conectados com universidades por exemplo o rádio USPI … é conectado com a
universidade de São Paulo.
They are... no … eh … if they receive a government subsidy its small. Radio similar to NPR
are radios connected to universities, for example the radio USPI … its connected with the
University of Sao Paulo.
E: É são estudantes que fazem o rádio?
And are they students making the radio?
A: Não tenho certeza se são estudantes mas é subsidiada … com certeza alguns estudantes
fazem estadios … provavelmente estudantes de communicação né? Mas eu acho que o subsidio
e o apoio vêm das universidades, né? Tem a rádio Gazeta também que tal vez tem algum
subsidio público, mas é pouco comparado com NPR aquel de Brasil é poucismo. É não são tão
populares é mais para elite intelectual no país.
I'm not sure if they are students, but it is subsidized … certainly some students do internships
… probably communication students, no? But I think that the subsidy and the support comes
from the universities, no? There is also the radio Gazeta which maybe receives some kind of
public subsidy, but it is small, compared to NPR that of Brazil is very small. And they aren't as
popular, it is more for the intellectual elite of the country.
E: Se pode dizer que o NPR também é asi.
You could say that NPR is also like that.
A: Também, é verdade. Mas todos os estados aqui têm NPR, né? Na maioria das cidades
econtrem NPR e eu não sei se é a mesma realidade no Brasil.
You could, its true. But all of the states here have NPR, no? In the majority of cities you can
find NPR and I don't know if it is the same reality in Brazil.
E: Pode ser que em alguns lugares rurais não têm.
It could be that some rural places don't have it.
A: É é.
Yes.
E: E eles têm otra fonte de noticia ou de informação? Que seria o rádio o seria o televisão?
And they have some other source of news or information? Which would be radio or
television?
A: Em outros lugares? Eu acho que o televisão muito mais do que o rádio mas eu sou muito
urbano né? Eu não .. só conheço … eu nunca morei no interior no Brasil. Eu sei que existem
rádios né no interior e é uma outra realidade … música caipira música sertaneja … se entende
sertaneja ou caipira?
In other places? I think that the television much more than radio but I am very urban, no? I
don't... I only know... I never lived in the interior of Brazil. I know that there are radios no? In
the interior and that it is another reality … caipira music sertaneja music … do you know what
sertaneja and caipira are?
E: Eu sei as palavras e sei que são tipos de música mas não sei qual tipo, não sei como são.
I know the words and I know that they are types of music but I don't know why kind, I don't
know what they are like.
A: Então mas é... escutam muito o rádio no Brasil e tal vez no interior seja uma fonte de noticias
mas a TV é com certeza mais popular.
Well, but so it is … they listen to a lot of radio in Brazil and perhaps in the interior it might be a
news source but the TV is certainly more popular.
E: Há uma coisa mais que você acha importante saber sobre o rádio?
Is there anything else you think is important to know about radio?

A: Que nos últimos veinte anos mais ou menos o inglês é muito prevalente né? Muitas das
músicas são no inglês, as músicas são internacionais e … é... a maioria das rádios tocam música
em inglês. Só isso.
That in the last twenty years more or less English is very prevalent, no? Many of the songs
are in English, the songs are international … and …. the majority of the radios play music in
English. Just this.
