Dear Friends, welcome to the Costa Verde 13th edition
newsletter.
As autumn begins to 'fall' upon us, we shall tour Portugal
and France in this edition. From there we shall share news
regarding projects in which we have participated as well as
other activities of an institutional nature. In keeping with

Estimados Amigos,
Prestes a chegarmos ao fim de mais um ano, particularmente difícil para todos nós portugueses e com a perspetiva de um novo ano, provavelmente ainda mais difícil
para todos do que este 2013, é difícil mesmo do conforto
de quem está numa empresa com relativa estabilidade e
com perspetivas, ter palavras de otimismo quando todos
estamos conscientes da precariedade do momento que vivemos, sobretudo quando falamos do emprego.
Nestes momentos, penso sobretudo naqueles que com
mais de 45 e menos de 60 anos vivem uma situação de desemprego, na maior parte das vezes sem que tenham minimamente concorrido para esta situação, e que no
quadro atual e de medio prazo dificilmente encontrarão
um posto de trabalho.
Penso nos jovens que, apesar de todo o esforço que fizeram para bem se prepararem para participarem ativamente nas nossas empresas e na nossa sociedade, não
conseguem encontrar trabalho; mas também penso naqueles muitos que tiveram de emigrar para conseguirem
noutros países, longe da família, dos amigos e da sua
terra, aquilo que o nosso país não lhes consegue proporcionar. É tendo isto presente, que todos os dias aqui na
Costa Verde todos lutamos e nos esforçamos para conseguir garantir o posto de trabalho ás mais de trezentas famílias que tanto dependem deste emprego, até porque
para muitas delas se trata do único ativo que possuem.

Dear Friends,
As we reach the end of yet another year, one that was particularly hard for all Portuguese citizens, and as we face
the prospect of a new year, which will probably be even
harder for all of us than 2013, it is difficult to share words
of optimism - even from those in a position of relative comfort who work in a company with some stability and future
prospects - as we are all too aware of the insecurity and precariousness of the present moment, especially when we
discuss employment.
At times like these, I especially think about those people
between the ages of 45 and 60, who are in the midst of an
unemployment situation, and basically are not to blame
for it, and thanks to the current scenario will have difficulty finding employment in the medium term.
I also think about all the young people who, despite their
efforts to properly prepare for an active participation in
our companies and society, are unable to find a job; but I
also think about the many who had to emigrate in order to
achieve in other countries, away from their families,
friends and homes, that which our country is unable to provide for them.
With this in mind we, at Costa Verde, strive hard every
single day to insure jobs for over three hundred families
whose lives are so dependent on this place of employment,
particularly because for many of them it is their only
source of income.

A Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do AltoDouro, fundada pelo Marques de Pombal na segunda
metade do seculo XVIII, mais precisamente em 1756,
também denominada Real Companhia Velha, tem como
missão a sustentação da cultura das vinhas e conservar a
sua produção na sua pureza natural. No ano de 2006 a
Real Companhia Velha celebrou 250 anos de existência e
de atividade ininterrupta ao serviço do Vinho do Porto.
Foi durante o reinado de D. José I, por iniciativa do seu
ministro, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo que foi
criada a Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do
Alto Douro, com sede no Porto, com o objetivo de limitar
a preponderância dos ingleses no comércio dos vinhos do

aquela região.

In the second half of the eighteenth century, specifically
in 1756, the Marquês de Pombal founded the Companhia
Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro - also known
as Real Companhia Velha - with the purpose of sustaining
the vineyard culture and preserving its production within
the confines of its natural purity. In 2006, the Real
Companhia Velha celebrated 250 years of existence and
continuous business activity at the service of Port Wine.
During the reign of D. José I, and due to the initiative of
his minister, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the
Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro
was created. The company was based in the city of Oporto,
and its' intent was to limit the predominance of the
English in the wine business in the Alto Douro region, and
also to solve the crisis that was plaguing the region at the
time. The company, which has since then obtained
worldwide recognition and is an integral part of
Portuguese history, has now selected Costa Verde as its

The project 'Uma Casa Portuguesa' invites the user to an experience that is 100% national.
The project is not limited to local housing or simply a
window display of national Portuguese products. It aims
to create spaces that allow for experimenting national customs and culture. It also promotes the cooperation between various industries with over 90 partners, as well as
national talent. The first house is currently being completed. Following the inauguration, the project intends to
move forward with the replication of the concept all over

The International Convention of the Belgium coffee
roasting company, Miko NV, was held in Aveiro between
the 18th and 20th October.
Delegation directors from approximately 20 countries
worldwide gathered at this event and seized the opportunity to know and experience the very best that this
Portuguese region has to offer. This event, held biennially,
promotes a meeting and exchange of the company's various worldwide branches. These branches use this opportunity to interact and to undertake an assessment of the
market as well as establish goals and strategic guidelines.
Costa Verde, the supplier of coffee cups for this important
world player in the coffee business for over 10 years, took
this opportunity to present the company in an institutional manner by promoting a visit to its industrial unit located in Vagos.
Foi em Setembro que o nosso Administrador Industrial ,
Francisco Proença, esteve presente numa Conferência
Internacional sobre “Impressão 3D” ,em Silicon Valley na
Califórnia, para se inteirar sobre a evolução que este
tipo de tecnologia Inovadora tem tido nos últimos
tempos , verificar o seu estado de arte e influência
futura, que tudo indica vai revolucionar fortemente, uma
grande parte dos diferentes sectores industriais, quer ao
nível dos custos quer ao nível dos tempos de execução.
Acreditamos também que a “Impressão 3D”vai revolucionar o Design de fabricação nos próximos tempos.
Foi uma surpresa verificar o estado tão avançado em que
esta tecnologia se encontra, bem como as inovações que
futuramente se vão sentir nos campos da engenharia,
arquitetura ,educação ,biomedicina, aeroespacial,
moda, indústria alimentar e muitos outros.
Há já dez anos a esta parte, que a Costa Verde se vê
positivamente influenciada na sua área de negócios,
utilizando a “Impressão 3D” como uma mais valia, na forte
capacidade de criação de protótipos e desenvolvimento
de novos produtos. Mais recentemente, com a introdução
de uma impressora 3D a cores, está a Costa Verde preparada para criar, desenvolver e imprimir diferentes tipos de
produtos , num material cerâmico e a cores.
PROJECTO - “PRINTCER3D” – É um projeto de
Investigação que a Costa Verde viu aprovado á cerca de 3
meses pela Agência de Inovação, que conjuntamente
com a Universidade de Aveiro e o CTCV de Coimbra, se
propõem determinar uma pasta de porcelana que possa
ser diretamente impressa a 3D, contribuindo assim para
a possível revolução deste sector da cerâmica.
This past September, our Industrial Administrator,
Francisco Proença, attended an International Conference
on "3D Printing", held in Silicon Valley, California, in order
to become better informed on the evolution that this type
of innovating technology has experienced recently, to
verify its state of the art and future influence, which by all
indicators will strongly and radically change and impact a
high number of different industrial sectors, both in terms
of costs and manufacturing times. We firmly believe that
"3D Printing" will radically change manufacturing design
in the near future. But we were surprised to ascertain the
considerably advanced state in which this specific technology is currently at, as well as the innovations that will
soon impact the fields of engineering, architecture,
education, biomedicine, aerospace industry, fashion, food
industry and many other business sectors.
Costa Verde has, for the past 10 years, been positively
influenced in its own business sector by using "3D
Printing" as an added value technology, by using its
strong capabilities to create prototypes and develop new
products. Recently, due to the introduction of a 3D color
printer in its process, Costa Verde was able to create,
develop and print different types of products, both in
porcelain and earthenware material and in color.
“PRINTCER3D” PROJECT – Is a research project for which
Costa Verde gained approval, approximately 3 months ago,
by the Agency for Innovation, which together with the
University of Aveiro and the CTCV of Coimbra, propose to
create a porcelain and earthenware paste that can be printed
directly on a 3D printer, thus contributing to the possible
r e v o l u t i o n o f t h i s s p e c i f i c c e r a m i c s e c t o r.
A Costa Verde associou-se à 1ª edição dos Prémios
Excelência na Hotelaria 2013, iniciativa levada a cabo
pela Associação de Diretores de Hotéis de Portugal
(ADHP) e a revista Publituris Hotelaria, evento realizado
no passado dia 11 de Outubro, por ocasião do Congresso
Nacional da ADHP.
Esta iniciativa visa reconhecer os profissionais e as
estratégias de e na Hotelaria, valorizando o seu contributo para a imagem do Turismo em Portugal, assim como
a sua importância ao nível da direção hoteleira.
As categorias a concurso foram: Melhor Diretor de Hotel,
Melhor Diretor de Alojamentos, Melhor Diretor de F&B,
Melhor Diretor Comercial/Marketing/Vendas, Melhor
Jovem Diretor, Melhor Estratégia Online e Melhor
Empresa de Outsourcing.
A Costa Verde como importante player no setor da
Hotelaria, associou-se a este evento oferecendo os
trofeus das várias categorias.

Costa Verde joined the 1st Edition of the 2013 Hotel
Excellence Awards, an initiative promoted by the
Association of Hotel Managers of Portugal (ADHP Associação de Diretores de Hotéis de Portugal) and the
magazine Publituris Hotelaria. This event was held last
October 11th, during the ADHP National Congress.
This particular initiative aims to acknowledge the professionals and strategies of and in the hotel industry, by
valuing their contribution to the image of the tourism
industry in Portugal, as well as their importance at the
hotel management level.
The competing categories were: Best Hotel Manager, Best
H o u s i n g M a n a g e r, B e s t F & B M a n a g e r, B e s t
Commercial/Marketing/Sales Manager, Best Young
Manager, Best Online Strategy and Best Outsourcing
Company. As an important player in the hotel industry,
Costa Verde joined this event by offering the trophies
awarded in the various categories.
Congratulations to the nominees and award winners.
A convite do Departamento de Línguas e Cultura da
Universidade de Aveiro, a Costa Verde participou nas III
Jornadas de Línguas e Relações Empresariais e de
Tradução 2013, que tiveram lugar entre os dias 26 de
Setembro e 11 de Outubro, tendo participado ativamente
na Mesa Redonda Empresas, tendo tido oportunidade de
partilhar o seu testemunho com os alunos de
Licenciatura e Pós Graduação deste departamento sob o
tema Inovação Empresarial e Línguas.
Tal como nas duas anteriores edições, o programa
integrou um conjunto de conferências, de aulas abertas
e de mesas redondas onde as Línguas e os Negócios foram
os temas que estiveram de mãos dadas.
A Costa Verde agradece uma vez mais o convite e disponibiliza-se para participar neste tipo de iniciativas que
permitem a interação do mundo empresarial com a
comunidade universitária.

At the invitation of the Department of Languages and Culture
of the University of Aveiro, Costa Verde participated in the III
Jornadas de Línguas e Relações Empresariais e de Tradução
2013 (III Conference on Languages and Business Relations
and Translation 2013). This event was held between
September 26th - October 11th, and the company actively
participated in the Mesa Redonda Empresas (Round Table of
Companies), having had the opportunity to share its experience on the subject of Business Innovation and Languages to
the undergraduate and post-graduate students of this
department.As in the two previous events, the program
integrated a set of conferences and events, open classes and
round tables where Languages and Business Sectors were the
main themes. Costa Verde once again would like to thank the
organizers for this invitation and hereby states its availability
to participate in this type of initiatives and events which allow
for the interaction of the business sector with the university
community.
No passado dia 2 de Agosto foi realizada a eleição do
representante dos trabalhadores para a SA 8000, tendo
sido eleito o colaborador Rui Gravato. O representante
escolhido por todos os trabalhares têm a função de
facilitar a comunicação com a Administração em tudo
aquilo que concerne a SA 8000.
A norma internacional SA 8000 é um sistema de verificação da aplicação das normas de Direitos Humanos aos
trabalhadores com base nas normas internacionais dos
Direitos Humanos e nas leis laborais nacionais
Rui Gravato, one of our collaborators, was elected on
August 2nd as the workers' representative for the standard
SA 8000. This representative was chosen by all the workers
and is in charge of easing the communication efforts with
the company's Administration about all matters pertaining to the standard SA 8000.
The international standard SA 8000 is a verification
system of the enforcement of the Human Rights standards
on the work force based on the international standards of
Human Rights and the national labor laws.

A Costa Verde tem um Plano de Emergência Interno
implementado para resposta à ocorrência de emergências nas suas instalações. Este plano é regularmente
testado para verificação da sua operacionalidade,
avaliando o desempenho dos meios técnicos e humanos
disponíveis. Foram simulados/ testados os procedimentos de resposta ao incêndio na manutenção e socorro de
três vítimas do mesmo local no passado dia 23 de
Outubro. Além da intervenção das equipas internas de
resposta à emergência, este simulacro também teve o
apoio dos Bombeiros Voluntários de Vagos.
No geral o simulacro decorreu em conformidade. As
falhas detetadas deverão ser alvo de medidas corretivas
para aumento da capacidade de resposta a situações de
emergência. Este simulacro evidenciou que os investimentos que a Costa Verde têm realizado no aumento de
competências em resposta à emergência têm sido
eficazes, realçando a competência dos meios humanos
internos nomeadamente:
·
Boa definição por parte dos chefes de equipas
das funções de cada equipa que se encontra a
chefiar;
·
Muito bem definidas as áreas de sinistro;
·
Equipas de Busca e Salvamento muito bem
equipadas com EPI completo de combate a
incêndio;
·
Busca rápida e concisa na procura de 3 vítimas
desaparecidas, total de 14 minutos para as
localizar e resgatar, para o exterior;
·
Equipas de Primeiros Socorros identificam e
corrigem corretamente as patologias das vítimas,
procedendo de seguida a sua retirada para ponto
triagem;
·
Passagem de ponto situação para COS dos
Bombeiros Vagos
Parabéns a todos os elementos das Equipas de emergência pelo seu desempenho.
Costa Verde has implemented an Internal Emergency Plan
as a response mechanism to the occurrence of any emergency situations in the facilities. This plan is regularly
tested in order to verify and insure its operation, assessing
the performance of the technical and human means
available. The fire response procedures were simulated /
tested during the maintenance schedule and rescue of
three victims of the same site on October 23rd. Besides the
intervention of the internal emergency response teams,
this fire drill was also supported by the local firefighting
corporation, Bombeiros Voluntários de Vagos.
In general, the fire drill occurred as expected. The appropriate corrective measures shall be taken in order to solve
the detected issues and also increase the response capability to emergency situations.
This fire drill showcased the efficacy of the investments
made by Costa Verde in what concerns the increase of their
competences pertaining to emergency responses. It also
highlighted the competence of the company's internal
human means, namely:
·
Good response by team leaders as to the functions
each team had to perform;
·
Extremely well defined accident areas;
·
Search and rescue teams well equipped with
complete fire fighting individual protection
equipment;
·
Quick and concise search whilst searching for 3
missing victims; a total of 14 minutes was
necessary to locate and rescue the victims and
take them outside area of site;
·
First aid teams correctly identified and corrected
the pathologies of victims, and then removed
them to the triage center;
·
Assessment of situation given to the Operations
Commander of the Bombeiros Voluntários de
Vagos local fire fighting brigade;
Congratulations to all the emergency team elements for
their performance in this fire drill.
