2º Encontro-Luso Brasileiro de História da Medicina Tropical BETWEEN EMPIRES AND BETWEEN TIMES: FROILANO DE MELO AND THE LEPROSY IN INDIA. Cristiana Bastos* ULisboa – Instituto de Ciencias Sociais [email protected] * Abstract Froilano de Melo (Goa 1887 – S Paulo 1955) was one of the most notorious and cosmopolitan doctors of the Medical School of Goa. He graduated in 1908 in Goa, completed his medical studies in Portugal, served as a physician in Africa, returned to India, held several positions in the management of public health and in the medical school, travelled to medical conferences in different places, went to Lisbon as delegate to the parliament, and lived his final years in São Paulo, Brazil. For an important part of his life he researched the biology, clinic and prophylactics of leprosy. In this paper I will discuss his work in the context of his multiple constrains: between political empires, between trends in tropical medicine, between networks of science, clinical assistance and public health.
