The Baptism of the Lord
Christ is Bathed in Light
For us, Christ is everything. We
begin in each day in his presence.
We are his people, from many
walks of life, and from many
nations and languages. We
adore the Lord, address him with
the psalms of our ancestors and
enter the sacred Liturgy, the
source and summit in our life in
Christ. Through our Catechetical
programs we pass on the faith
both to adults and children,
training in holiness which calls us
to a Holy life distinguished above
all in the art of prayer. Rising from
prayer we minister to the needs of
those who ask our help, with food
and other assistance. We are the
people of St. Edward Catholic
Church in Newark, California.
Christ is everything. If you have a
wound to heal, he is the doctor; if
you are in need of help, he is
strength; if you fear death, he is
life; if you desire Heaven, he is
the way; if you are in the
darkness, he is light. Blessed are
they who hope in him!
A sermon by St Gregory Nazianzen
Christ is bathed in light; let us also be bathed in light. Christ
is baptized; let us also go down with him, and rise with him.
John is baptizing when Jesus draws near. Perhaps he
comes to sanctify his baptizer; certainly he comes to bury sinful
humanity in the waters. He comes to sanctify the Jordan for our
sake and in readiness for us; he who is spirit and flesh comes to
begin a new creation through the Spirit and water.
The Baptist protests; Jesus insists. Then John says: I ought
to be baptized by you. He is the lamp in the presence of the sun,
the voice in the presence of the Word,
the friend in the presence of the
Bridegroom, the greatest of all born of
woman in the presence of the firstborn
of all creation, the one who leapt in his
mother’s womb in the presence of him
who was adored in the womb, the
forerunner and future forerunner in the
presence of him who has already
come and is to come again. I ought to
be baptized by you: we should also
add, “and for you,” for John is to be
baptized in blood, washed clean like
Peter, not only by the washing of his
feet.
Jesus rises from the waters; the world rises with him. The
heavens, like Paradise with its flaming sword, closed by Adam for
himself and his descendants, are rent open. The Spirit comes to
him as to an equal, bearing witness to his Godhead. A voice bears
witness to him from heaven, his place of origin. The Spirit
descends in bodily form like the dove that so long ago announced
the ending of the flood and so gives honor to the body that is one

UNITY
Unity is vision; it must have been part of the process
of learning to see. ―Henry Adams
(Continued from page 1)
with God.
Today let us do honor to Christ’s baptism
and celebrate this feast in holiness. Be cleansed
entirely and continue to be cleansed. Nothing
gives such pleasure to God as the conversion
and salvation of men, for whom his every word
and every revelation exist. He wants you to
become a living force for all mankind, lights
shining in the world. You are to be radiant lights
as you stand beside Christ, the great light,
bathed in the glory of him who is the light of
heaven. You are to enjoy more and more the
pure and dazzling light of the Trinity, as now you
have received – though not in its fullness – a ray
of its splendor, proceeding from the one God, in
Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be glory and
power for ever and ever. Amen.
Thank You!
Our New Year Day’s Dinner-Dance was an incredible evening. The food was great and everyone had
a lot of fun dancing. Thanks to all who worked to
make it so-our wonderful committee, all our volunteers, and thank you to all who came. We rejoice in
the spirit of unity and joy.
Diocesan Vocations Prayer
Gracious and loving God, under the intercession of Our
Lady of Guadalupe, raise up men and women to
respond to your call to serve in the Diocese of
Oakland. Our needs are great and our people thirst for
your presence. Open the hearts of many, raise up
faithful servants of the Gospel, dedicated, holy priests,
sisters and brothers who will offer themselves for your
people and their needs. Bless those who are now
serving with courage and perseverance. Grant that
many will be inspired by their example and faith to
embrace their call to holiness and to their particular
vocation in your Church. Give all the baptized of our
diocese the grace to know and do your will. We ask
this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
The Diocese of Oakland is blessed to have twenty-six
seminarians preparing for priesthood. Please generously contribute to the Seminary Collection next week,
January 19. You will find envelopes and pamphlets in
the pews’ rack.
Bible Study
St. Edward’ Thursday Evening Bible Study Group will
begin on Thursday, January 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the
school library a Ten-week study of ‘The Gospel According to John’. All are welcome. No previous bible
experience is necessary. For more information call

Missa Do Baptismo Do Senhor
BOLETIM PORTUGUÊS
MISSA DO BAPTISMO DO
SENHOR
É a partir do
A água purifica, limpa
a sujeira do passado, faz recomeçar, renascer.
batizarem. E no meio destes vem Jesus. Aí temos algo
verdadeiramente novo.
Jesus cumpre a vontade do Pai em tudo e isto implica
que ele experimente todas as prerrogativas do ser
A exegese sempre
a ressurreição: no confiar a própria cabeça à água
amado, no qual eu pus o meu agrado” (ressurreição).
experimentar o peso.
do fraco.

Termites
At the end of 2013 we found that we were heavily
infested with Termites. After a two year
relationship with Planet Orange and pretty
unsatisfied with their service we switched to
Pacific Coast Termite. Like most major trials, this
was an unbudgeted expense. The total cost was
$3300. There are three ways you can help:
1. Put your donation in a blank envelope with the
word “termites” and put it in the regular
collection. Be sure to include your envelope
number if you have one.
2. Go to the parish website and click on the
“Donate” button.
3. Hire Pacific Coast Termite to take care of your
own Termite problems or other pest control
issues and let them know that St. Edward
Parish referred you. They will pay the Parish
$50 for each referral.

Everyone had a delightful time. Be sure to
