Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit, Kaua‘i
Endangered Seabird Recovery Project (KESRP), located on the island of Kaua‘i. Continuation of
employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability
of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $2,189 - $3,100/Mon.
DUTIES: Monitors wildlife impacts as a result of human activities associated with wind energy
facilities, electrical transmission and distribution infrastructure and outdoor lighting, particularly those
that are relevant to the Kauai Island Utilities Cooperative (KIUC) Short-Term Habitat Conservation Plan
(HCP). Works under the direction of the Avian Conservation Biologist and the Endangered Avian
Research Project Coordinator. Duties include incidental take monitoring, biological monitoring, seabird
population survey and monitoring, restoration work on habitat for endangered and native species,
mapping species locations, and recording habitat work, worker hours, and materials usage. Must
adhere to equipment use, pesticide use, and invasive species prevention protocols. Performs
additional duties as assigned.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year
college or university in Biology, Wildlife Ecology or relevant field. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3)
years of experience in biological field work. Experience with searching for difficult to detect targets
(i.e.: bird watching, hunting, tracking). ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of field activities relating to
agricultural or natural resources management. Able to communicate effectively both orally and in
writing. Ability to read maps and aerial photographs and document work. Proficient in word
processing and spreadsheet computer applications. Ability to use Global Positioning System (GPS)
equipment. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess
the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the
training provided within three (3) months of hire). PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to
work outdoors in remote, often wet and cold and steep mountain terrain. Able to lift and carry
thirty-five (35) pounds.
SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Experience and knowledge of Hawaii’s biota, especially seabirds.
Experience with marine radar. Experience in the use of pesticides. Field experience in an active
resource management program to protect ecosystems in Hawaii or elsewhere. Experience using
handheld GPS units, particularly for purposes of data collection, and experience with Arc GIS
software. Familiarity with computers and data entry.
