Conversation between Silvia Simoncelli, Cora Piantoni, Enzo Umbaca and Cosimo Veneziano on the occasion of the exhibition held at KUNSTHALLE São Paulo in August/ September 2013. CORA PIANTONI CORA PIANTONI Silvia Simoncelli: Como você decidiu começar a pesquisa para o seu vídeo “We were Cinema”? Silvia Simoncelli: How did you decide to start the research for your video “We were Cinema”? Cora Piantoni: I was planning to do an interview project in a cinema for a long time. I keep returning to work as a projectionist again and again and was always fascinated about the discussion culture in the working space of a cinema which evolves from the great amount of time you spend together while the film is running. When I came to Dresden as artist in residence in 2008, I connected my idea with some research I had done about the years before 1989, the “Wende”, the events on the streets and in the private domain, which led step by step to the Fall of the Berlin Wall. I was interested in this period from the viewpoint of cinema and the position of those sitting and discussing in the foyer, in the gap between fiction on the screen and reality beyond the cinema doors. It was by coincidence that I went to Dresden, but I couldn’t have found a better place for cinema culture. Dresden was located in the “Valley of the Clueless” (Tal der Ahnungslosen) where you couldn’t receive radio or television signals from West Germany. But cinema was and still is very important in Dresden. SS: What was the most striking thing you learnt from these conversations? CP: There were several things I learnt. For example, I discovered that freedom of expression was limited by the fact that the secret service was present at most public occasions. At the premiere of a film, there was usually a discussion with the audience after the screening. These discussions were very open and often began with talking about the actual film, before discussing the public’s every day problems and a critique of the system. The will to discuss freely was stronger than the fear of a possible interview at the police station. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Dreams don’t grow old Issue # 5/13 | 3 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Cora Piantoni, We were cinema, 2010, 12’33’’, filmstill problemas públicos do quotidiano e a uma crítica ao sistema. E, claro, o “Landfilm” (filme do campo). SS: Em 2012, você realizou o trabalho “The Operators” (Os operadores), o que parece estar de alguma forma ligado ao “We were Cinema”. Você poderia nos Another important aspect was the intense use of cinema by different groups. School classes and groups of children visited the cinemas regularly, but also whole brigades from the factories. Film was part of the political program, and the ministry of culture had strict rules governing which films were to be shown (mainly from the “brother countries”, from Poland, Czechoslovakia, and the Soviet Union). And of course there was the “Landfilm” (countryside film). In the GDR, Film came to the people. Once a week, a 35mm projector, sound equipment and a film was transported to small villages without a cinema infrastructure and a film was projected in the public hall. SS: In 2012 you created the work “The Operators”, which seems to be somehow linked to “We were Cinema”. Can you tell us a bit more about your interest in this specific occupation, which seems to be situated half way between real space and fiction? CP: With the decision by the film industry and the distributors to finish the production of 35mm film, ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Dreams don’t grow old Issue # 5/13 | 4 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Cora Piantoni, The Operators, 2012, 6’41’’, filmstill contar um pouco mais sobre o seu interesse por esta profissão específica, o que parece estar situada no meio do caminho entre espaço real e ficção? The replacement of the actual film material and the corresponding machines with digital cinema equipment is a technical process. But it also represents a different value of labour and knowledge. “The Operators” is a farewell project to that profession, which will still exist in film museums and independent cinemas, but only at the periphery of cinema culture – which might be the most interesting part: the edge. The portraits of different operators are conversations about the possibilities of cinema as a space, first of all as a social space between the shared privacy of the projectionist’s cabin and the cinema hall and the public space of the foyer and the adjoining bar. But also cinema as an alternative space, to play with the special acoustics of the cinema hall, to combine music and film, to program in a more experimental way if you decide to run a cinema as a collective, independent of market structures. Movimentos de resistência e estratégias de sobrevivência dentro dos regimes comunistas opressivos são pontos de partida para minhas pesquisas. at it as a process which is able to produce political discourse and identity. Do you see this process as specifically linked to a time and/or social situation? CP: I am particularly interested in the years before 1989 in Eastern Europe. Resistance movements and survival strategies within the oppressive Communist regimes are starting points for my research. Labour was much more important in the Communist systems before 1989 - everyone had to have a job. This created a certain stability and equality. But if you were against the system, you could even be imprisoned for being unemployed. Solidarity between people was stronger than today. In a situation of political oppression, individuals tend to be more courageous in creating their own spaces for expressions of free speech and meetings, but also in helping each other to survive, intellectually and on a practical level. Cinema was one of these relatively free spaces. Cora Piantoni, International cinema, Berlin, 2012, foto do arquivo da artista / artist’s archive image the GDR, when more and more people were applying to leave the country and couldn’t find a job because of that, some found work as ushers. Cinema served as a niche. And it wasn’t only the staff who were critical of the political system, but also the films, especially those from Soviet Union, under the influence of Perestroika. ENZO UMBACA ENZO UMBACA Silvia Simoncelli: Como você imaginou o vídeo “Metallurgic Sounds” (Sons Metalúrgicos)? Silvia Simoncelli: How did you envisage the video “Metallurgic Sounds”? It was a public art project, promoted by the Province of Turin, curated by A.Titolo and Rebecca De Marchi, and produced by the City of Forno Canavese. SS:In Forno Canavese the factory and the community live in an almost symbiotic relationship: what aspects were urgent for you in this context? The video was created especially thanks to the will of Caesar Mondino, Mayor, and councilor Paolo Bianco, who despite the obvious problems, complaints and ongoing tensions within the community, have supported the project and made it real. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Dreams don’t grow old Issue # 5/13 | 7 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Enzo Umbaca, LAP, Forno Canavese, Paese che vai suono che trovi (Cada Cidade um Som diferente / Each Town a different Sound), performance, 23 Setembro / September 2006. Foto / Photography: Michele d’Ottavio. EU: Forno Canavese, is a small town of about 3,800 inhabitants, not easy to reach, which has a long historical tradition of steel industry manufacturing that dates back to the late 19th century: small familyrun factories that were sometimes established in backyards, which became larger over time. This way, a symbiosis and a blending of the place and the community was always well established. Just to give you an idea of the scale, it must be remembered that at least until recently, this small town produced about 30% of the Italian steel and metal forging and it is no coincidence that the prototype of the first Italian car was born here. These factories also produced part of Italy’s artillery during World War II. It’s the impact of the running of the big presses running day and night - like a heartbeat - that constantly keeps productivity alive; this is the soul sound that I have identified. Foto / Photography: Michele d’Ottavio. How did you manage this? EU: In the space of one year - the operating time of the project - I didn’t limit my activity to the recording of the audible noise in the town, but I had the chance to enter the factories and see from the inside the working apparatus and the conditions of alienation inherent in this type of work. So I tried to understand the feelings of these people and find their inner “leitmotiv”, a collective memory, an interesting feed-back for the project. I met the whole town band in Forno Canavese, as well as the Chorus “Monte Scoglio”, which is formed in part by workers and retirees of the same factories. Usually these are the realities of the social fabric that are the symbol of sociability and represent a point of union between working and leisure time. When I met them I understood that they would be the right people to involve and to be entrusted with the task of performing the music, even if I knew that I would run into some difficulties. In fact, having already had some ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Dreams don’t grow old Issue # 5/13 | 9 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Enzo Umbaca, LAP, Forno Canavese, Paese che vai suono che trovi (Cada Cidade um Som diferente / Each Town a different Sound Town), performance, 23 Setembro / September 2006. In the first phase of work, during the sampling of ambient noise inside the factories, it was amazing to hear some of the sounds made by sophisticated machines, which reproduced exactly many noises similar to musical notes. The initial idea was to do a choral work, almost a hymn to whistle, just one song, but the creative process became enriched by many interesting features, therefore focusing on one track only would have been reductive. The project was concluded with a performance event in a factory where the orchestra, conducted by Mario Bertol, played in sync with the working machines, creating a relationship, a kind of musical narration, where all the stories collected during the project flowed and became melody. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Dreams don’t grow old Issue # 5/13 | 11 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Being in a factory for an event like this was something unusual and exciting. The participation of the community of Forno and the surrounding area was enfolding and numerous, old friends or co-workers who hadn’t seen each other in a long time met on this occasion. SS: Music is often the vehicle by which you approach the representation of a community, as you have done in other works such as Harp (2009) and Theatre of Memory (2010). Where does this interest of yours come from? Enzo Umbaca, Arpa (Harp), técnica mista, vista da instalação / mixed media, installation view, 2009. Cortesia do artista e Galleria Franco Noero. EU: The idea of Harp came from the image of a ‘community’ of boats, which are the boats of migrants, abandoned at the port of Roccella Ionica in the Ionian Sea. When I realized that they were starting to clear away the area, I thought about constructing this musical instrument, using wood salvaged from the wrecks. I worked in cooperation with the Museum of Popular Music of Calabria, to make sure the harp would work perfectly. This work, which in many ways recalls the sea, is nothing more than a tribute to migrants. Theatre of Memory, is a project I created in Bulgaria for the exhibition “Dwelling-in-Travel” at the Center for Contemporary Art, Plovdiv, curated by Andrea Wiarda and Katia Anguelova. In this case I involved the Bulgarian choral group of state radio: “The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices”. Having discovered that the choir had never sung “The Internationale”, notwithstanding the fact that it is the second hymn of the Nation, I asked them to make an interpretation in the Roman amphitheater of Plovdiv. I do not know exactly where my interest in music comes from, it might have started when I was a child, practicing the drums to get into the band of my own town. At that time in fact, I could not stand popular music, but I started to appreciate it and be specifically interested in it after I emigrated. Traditionally, communities are built from different experiences and ingredients - there is no place without memory, history, or traditions which can be undetectable and barely visible at first glance. And the richer these ingredients are, the stronger the community identity is. These are the elements I always look for when doing field research for my projects. But ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Issue # 5/13 | 12 Dreams don’t grow old ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Neste caso, eu envolvi o grupo do coral búlgaro da rádio estatal: “The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices” (O Mistério das Vozes Búlgaras). I am interested in music, which compared to other elements of identity seems to be the most user-friendly and allows me to get in touch in a more immediate and direct way with people. COSIMO VENEZIANO COSIMO VENEZIANO Silvia Simoncelli: Com Questo è dunque un monumento? Silvia Simoncelli: With Questo è dunque un monumento? (Is this then a monument?) you’ve brought about an ontological change to an item of street furniture in the town of Superga. How did you come to this decision? A partir do título da obra, tentei levantar uma reflexão huge “monster” created with the so called Italian “Law of 2%”, which regulates public funding allocated to works of art to be included in every newly built public building. The Law 717 of 1949, known as “Law of 2%”, has been applied for over 50 years in Italy, but in recent times, local governments have sometimes failed to implement it, due to lack of funding or dubious interpretation of the law itself. Often, also due to a lack of confidence in the value of including works of art in newly built buildings or housing complexes. Therefore sometimes the 2% budget has been spent in a distorted way, for interventions that have not been fully justifiable as works of art. Over the centuries, monuments have been the representation, imposing and cumbersome, of events and jubilees, which marked the history of mankind: conquests, revolutions, discoveries. Overturning this univocal narrative, I decided to create a memorial dedicated to the work of female workers in the course of the twentieth century. Starting from the title of the work Questo è dunque un monumento? (Is this then a monument?), I tried to create a reflection on the whole ‘loss of memories’ which accompanies the history of ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Dreams don’t grow old Issue # 5/13 | 14 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// women and in particular their role in the world of labour. I placed on the preexisting fountain located in Via Verolengo four simple slabs of Cor-ten (cm. 50 × 100 each) depicting four of the gestures that the workers performed daily in the course of their time at the factory. As if they were pencil drawings, the plates reproduce only the four actions that were repeated to insert the fabric in the machine and allow the stitching of the upper rubber. Gestures that, from the early decades of the twentieth century up to the ‘70s, were repeated in the area of the factory known as Department 52, that stood exactly on the area where the fountain/monument in today located, since the whole area has been converted in recent years into a green area and a residential area. SS: What role does the archive play in the creative process for such a work? CV: The archive has been for me a large container, where I could search and compose. My interest was in looking at items that are no longer in use, not in order to recover them, but for welcoming the perspective that they pose. Every day one chooses to throw away or give something up, and these shreds of history, especially personal histories, enrich lists and database. So perhaps this second life that the researcher can envisage, these new lands that unfold - often in a repetition which is typical for the obsessive collector - pose the question that the issue, or the new opportunity, it is not in the data of an archive, but in the way in which these are arranged. SS: How did you come to be in touch with the workers? What were their reactions when you told them about the project? Acima: Entrevistas com antigas trabalhadoras da Superga F.R.G.I.T / Interviews with former workers of Superga F.R.G.I.T Na página ao lado: Desenhos dos movimentos realizados pelas antigas trabalhadoras durante as entrevistas / Next page: Drawings of the movement performed by the former workers during the interviews CV: The contact with the workers was causal, by word of mouth. My goal was to create a sort of “silent” interview without dialogue, concentrating on the rhythm of working gestures, of those four gestures that allowed to insert the rubber into the machine and sew it to the upper. These four gestures were repeated like a strange ritual. I asked the workers, now retired - who were eager to meet a “scholar” who was interested in the work they had done for almost 35 years – to describe those ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Dreams don’t grow old Issue # 5/13 | 15 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// sobre a “perda de memória”, que acompanha a história das mulheres e em particular, seu papel no mundo do trabalho. SS: For a few years, in addition to your artistic practice which is often conducted in dialogue with different social groups, you’ve also been the organizer of the public art project “Diogene”. How do you integrate this activity with your artistic practice? Which interests bind them? CV: The project activity “Diogene” travels in parallel with my artistic research - sometimes the two “assets” are intertwined creating interesting hybrids, where you have the privilege of watching the small “community of contemporary art” from different points of view. “Diogene” was not created as a public art project, it became a hybrid project which is difficult to categorize. Perhaps this schizophrenia is due to the sum of a diverse range of research methodologies. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Sonhos não envelhecem | Dreams don’t grow old Issue # 5/13 | 18 ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Questo è dunque un monumento? Metallurgic Sounds (Sons Metalúrgicos, 2006) é um vídeo do concerto-performance que marcou a fase Visions of Labour explores living conditions, rituals and memories of workers’ communities in three different geographical and historical contexts. Through the means of video, interviews, performance, installation and music, artists Cora Piantoni (CH), Enzo Umbaca (IT), and Cosimo Veneziano (IT) generate processes of self representation. Leaving aside the stereotypes of chain work, they explore relations between people, their working environment and society. Neglecting material aspects of labour, the artists have produced intense portraits of worlds that are somehow fading. As they concentrate on the relevance of residual elements such as sound, gestures, routine and informal conversations, their works convey images which are both abstract and firmly rooted in the life of workers. By researching archives and discussing and producing new formats to translate shared experiences, they highlight the way these communities have developed as political, historical and economic subjects, rooted in labour. In her video We Were Cinema (2011), Cora Piantoni visits different cinemas in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR), meeting people who worked there in the years before 1989. At that time they were mostly young and unwilling to submit to the system of control that was exercised in society through factory labour. They now remember - 25 years on - how they found in movie theatres a space of informal working conditions and the possibility of free speech, which they nurtured with films and retrospectives, and shared with audiences alike. Metallurgic Sounds (2006) is a video of the concertperformance which marked the final stage of a long term project conducted by Enzo Umbaca in the small mountain town of Forno Canavese, near Turin, one of the oldest centres of steel manufacturing in Italy. Umbaca approached this place and the workers with the intent to give voice to their “soul of sounds”. (Este é então um monumento?, 2011) é o resultado de um longo processo de pesquisa que o artista Exploring the noise landscape of steel production machinery, and merging it with an anthem aptly composed for the village, Umbaca has produced in cooperation with professional and amateur musicians, steel workers and common people, a piece of music in the form of a one-time event involving the whole community as producers, performers and audience. For his work, Cosimo Veneziano has transformed a piece of urban furniture into a monument dedicated to the women who worked in a shoe factory which has since been dismantled and replaced by a newly built block of flats. Questo è dunque un monumento? (Is this then a monument?, 2011) is the result of a long research process which the artist started by examining the archives of the factory, where he focussed his attention on some pictures documenting the simple repetitive routine of gestures performed by workers. He decided that he wanted to meet the women, who are now elderly retired ladies, and ask them to demonstrate once more the gestures they still know by heart.
