Activity Report 2007
1. Summary
1.1 OVERVIEW
Centro de Química da Madeira (CQM) was officially created in 2004 with the approval of a proposal,
submitted in 2002, to the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) by a group of five (5) Ph. D.
researchers from the Chemistry Department of the University of Madeira (UMa). Its stated mission is
devoted to the development of R&D activities in the field of Chemistry and Biochemistry in Madeira
Island, promoting simultaneously the post-graduation formation, the collaboration with other national
and international research unities, the services to the community and the popularization of science
among youngsters and the society in general. The research centre is organized in two research groups:
Natural Products and Materials group. Currently, our research team is composed by 9 permanent Ph. D.
members (from two Departments: Chemistry and Health Sciences), 2 Ph. D. From other institutions, 4
Post-docs, 8 Ph. D. students, 14 collaborators including several undergraduate and graduate students
and one administrative staff member.
The ongoing research projects represent a total of € 700.000. This sum, along with previous financed
projects, amount more than € 3.3 millions (considering the budget of all partners involved). Research
projects are directed towards applied research with high local impact (evaluation and improvement of
Madeira wine; chemical characterization and pharmaceutical potential of products extracted from
endemic plants) and also directed to most emergent and demanding fields (design and synthesis of
drugs from bioactive natural analogues; gene delivery; molecular modeling; and nanochemistry with
electronic and biomedical applications).
1.2 MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS
This report describes the activities carried out by CQM during the year of 2007, the fourth year covered
by the financial support of FCT. The report reflects the work developed in terms of publications,
preparation of research projects, consolidation or establishment of new collaborations, networking,
recruitment of Ph. D. and Post-doc students, as well as scientific divulgation actions.
During 2007 CQM had 26 research projects of different types, funded by diverse entities (like FCT and
INTERREG IIIB), and mostly headed by CQM researchers (see 4.2 Scientific Projects and Contracts). Two
new FCT projects (DENDRALGENE and FUNCMETAL), headed by Helena Tomás and João Rodrigues, in a
total amount of € 276.000 have been approved and 5 submitted projects, accounting about € 772.000,
are awaiting the evaluation outcome (see Research projects submitted for external funding, page 14).

In this period the new NMR and the LCMSMS was installed and started to work in routine mode.
Simultaneously, CQM acquired, with the pluri-annual programme, an automatic polarimeter (€ 7.661)
and, under the cover of DENDRALGENE FCT project, an inverted epi-fluorescent microscope and a
microplate reader with fluorescence/absorbance/luminescence, red sensitive PMT and dispenser
module was also installed (€ 66.500).
Regarding the scientific production, 14 papers and 7 proceedings were published during 2007, and 10
other papers are already accepted for publication (see 6.Publications). Additionally, 22 oral
communications and 50 posters were presented at scientific Meetings and Conferences.
It is worth mentioning several conferences where team members of CQM were present as organizers
(co-organizers or local organizers):
•
The 3rd Joint Summer School and Fall Work Meeting of FAME - Functionalized Advanced
Materials and Engineering of Hybrids and Ceramics (EU FP6 Network of Excellence), Funchal,
September 29-October 5, 2007. Co-organizer, 85 participants
•
The 1st Summer School of TERMIS – EU (European Chapter of the Tissue Engineering and
Regenerative Medicine International Society), Funchal, June 2007. Co-organizer, 70
participants.
•
The 3rd Marie Curie Cutting Edge Conference “Biomineralisation of Polymeric Materials,
Bioactive Biomaterials and Biomimetic Methodologies”, Funchal, June 2007. Local organizer,
90 participants.
In 2007, CQM has also received four visiting fellows:
•
Prof. Michael Murkovic from Food Chemistry Department (Graz University of Technology,
Austria) visited our research Centre for a 2 week period.
•
Profs. Pedro Núñez Coello and Ricardo Souto Suárez (University of La Laguna, Spain) stayed
with us to prepare collaboration projects and for a public presentation of IMANAC- INSTITUTO
DE MATERIALES Y NANOTECNOLOGÍA DE CANARIAS.
•
Prof. Sílvia Rocha (University of Aveiro, Portugal)
•
Prof. Gordon Cragg (National Cancer Institute, USA)
CQM current activities also include initiatives that have the objective of promoting the awareness of
science among youngsters. Two main projects were deployed in this area: “A Química é
Divertida/Chemistry is Fun” (several chemistry/biochemistry related activities performed during one

week) and “Ocupação Científica de Jovens nas Férias”, both funded by Agência Nacional para a Cultura
Científica e Tecnológica (ANCCT) - Ciência Viva. Furthermore, CQM´s website, with 72 accesses/day in
2007 (26.400 accesses/year, 39% more than in 2006), is one of our privileged ways to contact and
spread our activities complemented by a regular service of press releases.
As a result, CQM often makes the news in the regional media. At least, 7 newspaper’s short news and 1
big interview (4 colour pages in the Sunday newspaper supplement of “Diário de Notícias da Madeira”)
were published in 2007. The interaction with the TV was also an important aspect of our activity in
2007. The total estimated time spent by the local TV station with information about CQM´s activities in
2007 was about 10 min in prime time news (50% more than in 2006). For the first time, a National TV
Channel (SIC TV) and a Cable Channel (PANDA Channel, based in Spain) covered the action “A Química
é Divertida/Chemistry is Fun” that took place during the National Week for Science and Technology (a
national activity sponsored by the Portuguese Government); in addition, PANDA Channel also invited us
for the production of 3 small science divulgation programs (of 7 minutes each) having chemistry as a
general topic. These programs have been broadcasted during December (2007) and January (2008) in
“TV Cabo”, the main Portuguese cable network.
The CQM member Pedro Pires continued his activity as a National Expert attached to the European
Commission in Brussels (Unit of Micro and Nanosystems) along the year of 2007 and José Câmara was
elected President of Chromatographic Group of the Portuguese Society of Chemistry.
1.3 OUTLOOK
The trajectory followed by CQM in the last years will soon be evaluated by FCT and we hope that it will
be possible to confirm the statement made by the evaluation panel of the proposal presented by CQM
to the National Program for Re-Equipment; the panel described CQM as “… a good group that deserves
support now. This project is very good and needs to be supported in the frame of a general policy
which will recognize the national interest to provide the Madeira Chemistry with large equipment.”.
We believe that with the new equipments recently installed and the reinforcement on human resources
during 2008-2009, CQM will be able to evolve both scientifically and in respect to the relation with the
surrounding society.
The concretization of such growth during the following years will depend on several factors such as:
•
Consolidation of the areas of intervention of the Research labs
•
Partnerships established with groups and institutions (in Portugal and abroad) that complement
the activities of the existing Labs and groups at CQM
•
Scientific cooperation between members of CQM

•
Financial support (from FCT and from other institutions) for the regular maintenance of the
new equipments (NMR and LCMSMS) and for reinforcing our team (with adequate technical and
research staff).
As main goals for the next years, we have to:
•
Raise our number of papers per year. An average of at least two (2) papers/Ph. D./year is our
target for the next years
•
Raise our average IF-impact factor (2007: 2.6 (14 publications with IF in 21 published papers;
2006: 2.0 (21 publications with IF); 2005: 1.9 (7 publications with IF)
•
Increase the engagement with regional entities and private companies
•
Strengthen the critical mass in terms of human resources and small equipments
•
Organize advanced training programs with other national and international institutions in the
field of Natural Products and Materials

3. Research team
By the end of 2007, CQM was constituted by 15 Ph. D. members (Table 1 and 2), 8 Ph. D. students
(Table 2), 14 co-workers including several undergraduate and graduate students (Table 3) and one
administrative staff member in a total of 37 team members. Two of the Post-docs fellows and 7 Ph. D.
students were directly supported through FCT fellowships.
Two of the collaborators (also former
students of the Chemistry Department/UMa) finished their studies outside Madeira: one presented her
Ph. D. project at the University of Bordeaux in November (Cátia Ornelas) and the other presented her
Master thesis at the University of Lisbon in last December (Rosa Perestrelo).
As previously stated in our report of 2006, along with the installation of the NMR and LCMSMS, it was
our goal to increase the number of members of CQM during the year of 2007. So, Dr. Viney Lather
joined CQM as one of our new Ph. D. members. Additionally we have three more Ph D. students in our
team - Ana Pereira, João Figueira and Pedro Branco. In March 2008, another Post-Doc fellow supported
by a FCT project (FUNCMETAL/PTDC/QUI/64202/2006) started his work at CQM (Dr. Swarup Maiti), and
two more post-doc fellows are expected to start working during 2008.

Activity Report 2007
6. Publications
During the year of 2007, the research center has published a total number of 21 papers (14 papers in
journals with impact factor and 7 proceedings). Ten additional papers and one chapter book have
already been accepted to be published in 2008 and other 11 papers were submitted by the end of 2007.
The number of oral communications in international conferences was 10 out of 22, and 50 posters were
also presented in the last year.
Comparing these results with the results for the previous year, an increase in the number of
communications was observed (16 and 41 oral and poster presentations, respectively, in 2006) and,
most important, an improvement in the average impact factor (2.0 in 2006 to 2.6 in 2007). Considering
only the number of papers in journals with impact factor, from 2004 to 2007, an average of 12
papers/year or 1 paper/team member (average of 12 Ph.D./year) was achieved. Nevertheless, if we
considerer the total number of publications reached in the same period for all CQM team (76
publications), an average of 20 publications/year or 1.6 papers/team member was achieved.
Figure 3. Evolution of the number of publications from 2004 to 2007.
With the installation of the NMR and LCMSMS equipments during 2007, an increase in the overall
scientific production is expected in the near future. Based on the number of papers already accepted

and submitted, as well as on the number of communications presented during 2007, we expect to
increase the number of publications to 25-30 papers, and maintain the average impact factor.

7. Funding
Since its creation in 2004, CQM had the support of several institutions (see main supporters). FCT was
one of the most important supporters with CQM receiving a budget proportional to the classification
obtained in the previous evaluation and to the number of Ph.D. members (Pluri-annual Programme:
€36.457 in 2007).
From 2004 until the end of 2007, including: national projects funded by FCT, AdI and other financial
sources; international projects in the scope of the program INTERREG IIIB; FCT grants and pluri-annual
Programme, the CQM budget totalised a value ca. of €3.271.000 (a total amount that considers the
budget of all partners involved), besides its involvement in the two national networks of NMR and MS
(that correspond to a total budget of €9.800.000). From these amounts (that includes the Pluri-annual
Programme), about €2.484.000 were directly managed by CQM members and applied in UMa research
activities.
From Figure 4, which shows the distribution of CQM financial resources by source in the period 20042007, we can conclude that the income managed by CQM came mainly from FCT (Human Resources, reequipment projects, national projects and Pluri-annual programme) with a percentage of 76%. Even if,
during the period 2004-2007, the support received through the Pluri-annual Programme only represents
ca. 3% of the total budget managed by CQM, this support was undoubtedly fundamental for the normal
running of research activities.

managed by CQM only).
