General Research Interests
The researches interests of our group (Laboratory of Bioecology and Systematic of
Crustacean) focus on the decapod crustaceans (swimming crabs, crabs, hermit crabs,
shrimps and prawns) from Atlantic and Pacific coasts under biological and ecological
aspects to provide information about their life history, population dynamics,
reproductive behavior, growth, systematic among others. The principal research lines of
decapods are: Larval development, reproductive biology (fecundity, gonadal and molt
cycle), biodiversity, population dynamics (size frequency, sex-ratio, and seasonal
abundance), relative growth (dimorphism, sexual maturity), and shell utilization and
shell selection by hermit crabs in natural and laboratory conditions. Since 1999 we are
looking at species divergence phylogenies, and comparing regional populations (either
synonymizing some names thought to be valid or subdividing some species complexes)
by molecular and morphological analysis.
