AUCTION SALE – ART OF THE 19 AND 20 CENTURIES, PART I AND II 252. MAX BECKMANN – THE ELESH COLLECTION – 38 SELF-PORTRAITS 251. PRINTS AND DRAWINGS BY OLD MASTERS Catalogue of Modern Art, Part I, includes 170 works of art. The selection comprises an outstanding group of paintings, watercolours, drawings and rare prints by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner: The oil painting “Junger Bauer an einer Quelle” from about 1920 (CHF 500‟000), the important drawing in reed pen and brush “Potsdamer Platz” from 1913 (CHF 300‟000), which is a sketch for the street-scene painting in the Nationalgalerie in Berlin (Gordon 370), one of the two watercolours „Sitzender Akt auf Diwan“ from 1909 (CHF 150„000) and „Brandenburger Tor in Berlin“ from 1929 (CHF 200„000). The offering of prints by Kirchner also includes the important colour-woodcuts „Maler und Modell – Dichter und Weib“ from 1907 (CHF 200„000) as well as a recto-verso print with „Junkerboden“ from 1919 and „Frau in der Nacht“ (CHF 300„000). A highlight of our auction is the oil painting „Landschaft in Skøyen“ by Edvard Munch, painted around 1920 and 1925 (CHF 2.4 Mio.). There is also an important group of prints by the artist, amongst which a lithograph and a woodcut, both in two colour variants: The “Madonna” in the black and white version with the border and the embryo (Woll 39/A/I) and a second version printed in colours without border (Woll 39/C/VII). The woodcut „Man and Woman kissing“ (Woll 268) in two colour variants of green and orange as well as black and red. The important early oil painting by Emil Nolde, “Norburg (On the isle of Alsen)” from 1904, which has come to us from a Swiss private collection where it has been since 1906, is another exceptional contribution to this sale. The offering of Swiss Art is opulent this year again, the leading highlight of this year‟s sales being Ferdinand Hodler‟s „Vue de Montana vers le Val d‟Hérens et le Val d‟Hérémence [Les Etangs longs bei Montana]“ from 1915 (CHF 3.5 million), an outstanding oil painting in excellent condition that has remained in the same Swiss private collection since 1917. Giovanni Giacometti is represented with several important paintings, inter alia, with „Winterlandschaft in der Oberalpina“ from 1913 (CHF 400„000) und „Capolago im Winter mit Blick auf Piz Lagrev“ from 1928 (CHF 750„000), both incredibly striking paintings with scenes of the Engadin. Albert Anker features with „Der Schnapstrinker“ from 1900 (CHF 600„000), an imposing portrait of a drunkard. An attractive group of oil paintings by Cuno Amiet (landscapes, stilllifes and portraits) enriches the offering of Swiss Art. The works on paper include a group of 9 very attractive small watercolours and drawings by Paul Gauguin; a typical drawing in charcoal, „Buste de danseuse” from about 1896 by Edgar Degas (CHF 250‟000) and the two fine watercolours by Lyonel Feininger „Fischerboote“ from 1927 (CHF 175„000) and „Inseln im Weltmeer“ from 1933 (CHF 200„000). Among the works by Pablo Picasso the fine watercolour „Joueur de 1 flûte et gazelle“ from 1946 (CHF 500„000) and the drawing in Indian ink „Le Picador“ from 1959 (CHF 175„000) stand out next to the magnificent colour linocut "Nature morte au verre sous la lampe“ from 1962 (CHF 250'000). We also offer the beautiful bronze bust, “Lotar I”, (CHF 400„000) by Alberto Giacometti, from the artist‟s estate, and three important drawings. Marc Chagall is also represented by a small group of works from various working periods. Next to a few paintings from his later period we offer an early gouache on paper from 1926,„Le Meunier, son fils et l‟âne“ (CHF 450„000) and a watercolour, “Amoureux au coq“ from 1950 (CHF 125‟000). The offering also comprises three works by Georges Rouault, i.a. „Au Pressoir le raisin fut foulé“ from about 1948 (CHF 350„000), two works by Alexej von Jawlensky should be mentioned: „Abstrakter Kopf: Afrika“ from 1933, in oil on cardboard on wood (CHF 600„000) and the stilllife from the same year in oil on cardboard (CHF 300„000). Poliakoff is present with three oil paintings, inter alia, „Marron et rouge“ from 1963 (CHF 150„000). A separate catalogue (40 prints) is dedicated to the self-portraits of Max Beckmann from the Elesh Collection, Chicago. Each impression has been carefully selected since the 1950s by the author of one of the catalogues raisonnés of James Ensor‟s graphic oeuvre, with exacting demands on quality and rareness. The collection comprises very important and rare prints, amongst which an excellent proof of the rare 3 rd state of “Self-Portrait in Bowler Hat” (Hofmaier 180), the extremely rare dry-point “The Smoker” (Hofm. 98) and a proof of “Self-Portrait Hand to Cheek” (Hofm. 100) of which only a few proofs are known. th th The catalogue of Modern Art of the 19 and 20 Centuries, Part II, with 720 lots completes our offering in this field and includes many important works of highest quality. The catalogue includes about 500 works of Modern Art and more than 200 works created in the Post-War and Contemporary eras.
