Annual Agenda - @Coimbra 2016, a Municipal publication, introducing a compilation of the best that will take place in the municipality
along this year.
This agenda, a cooperation project of the various cultural, sportive
and touristic partners in Coimbra, is a comprehensive information
guide presenting a wide and diverse offer of events that will happen
in 2016. It is a great help to discover this unique city with so much
to offer.
In fact, we are living a very positive period for tourism and culture
in Coimbra! Whether we take into consideration the different available indicators or the opinions of the various agents involved, all
The current dynamics in Coimbra is also due to the action of a very
enterprising and creative group of cultural and sports agents, who
in the theater, music, arts, cinema or literature, and also in judo, gym,
rugby and many other modalities make the city vibrate the whole
year. This is a Coimbra with a lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere
where you can find motives of interest for every taste.
Towards this new standing of Coimbra has also contributed the continued growth of sectors such as health and science, which have
placed the city at the top of several national and international rankings. In addition, the city is largely visited by young people from all
parts of the country and from countries around the world, who
choose this city to develop here their university studies, making of
Coimbra a forever young, entrepreneurial, creative and innovative
place.

Coimbra is, at the moment, a cosmopolitan, modern, innovative city
with very attractive cultural and sportive activities, where the material and immaterial heritages come together in perfect harmony.
Globally recognized with the award of World Heritage by UNESCO,
the city gained a new status and became a destination even more
attractive. Named by the foreign press as a “hidden gem of Europe,”

The goal of this initiative, The Flavors of Writing, is to combine gastronomy and literature joining specialists of the two areas, along
a ‘walk’ through the knowledge and the flavors, making known
Coimbra literary and gastronomic traditions.
In a partnership with the course “Mestrado em História da
Alimentação – Fontes, Cultura e Sociedade” [Master course in Food
History – Sources, Culture and Society] / FLUC and with the Escola
de Hotelaria e Turismo de Coimbra [Hotel and Tourism School of
Coimbra], topics related to the life and work of different authors
and other relevant persons in local culture and history will be discussed in each session [in conferences], always in connection to the
traditional cuisine [holding of thematic dinners].

Meo Urban Trail event is a 12 kms trail and a 5 kms walk in an urban
environment, covering the historical sites of the city. The race has a

with the Urban Events, holds another edition of the already denominated “the happiest race on the planet.” It will take place, once
more, on the banks of Rio Mondego, counting with the presence
of thousands of participants. It is a 5km walk competition, where
the fun is the watchword. The 2016 edition will have the theme

It is one of the greatest student festivals in Europe, lasting for a
bit more than one week. The “Queima das Fitas” marks the steps
of the student experience at the University of Coimbra. The
Week of the Academy begins with the “Serenata Monumental”
[Monumental Serenade] at the Escadas da Sé Velha [Old Cathedral
stairs]. The program also includes the “Baile de Gala das Faculdades”
[Gala Ball of the different Colleges], the “Garraiada” [Bullfight],
the “Venda da Pasta” [Folder Sale], the “Queima do Grelo” [burning of the Ribbon], which named the party, and the “Cortejo dos
Quartanistas” [Parade of the fourth-year students], not to mention the crowded “Noites do Parque” [Nights at the Park] having

The Cultural Fair of Coimbra aims at the promotion, disclosure and

For 10 days, Coimbra will live real moments of animation, as well as of worship and veneration to the city patroness, with the achievement of one more
edition of the “Festas da Cidade de Coimbra e da Rainha Santa Isabel”.
In addition to an extensive program of cultural entertainment, sport, tourism and leisure initiatives sponsored by Coimbra municipality to celebrate
the identity, history, culture and traditions of one of the most important,
monumental and charming cities of Portugal, this year the highlight of the
City Festivities is the Commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Rainha
Santa Isabel beatification, which will be celebrated with a special program. In
2016, the religious program will have three processions [July 7, 9 and 10], as
well as the exhibition of the hand of Rainha Santa at the Monastery of Santa
Clara-a-Nova [July 1 to 13], and night visits to the Monastery.
The festivities will be focused on the usual moments of meditation, faith and
devotion - evoking a tradition that spans centuries and attracts thousands of

As in previous years, Câmara Municipal de Coimbra [Coimbra City
Hall] promotes another edition of the Social Crochet Festival, taking place from July 4 to August 31, 2016. The crochet works - true
works of art - are produced by the private social assistance institutions [IPSS] and associations, and will be exhibited in strategic areas of the city. As usual, this initiative is intended to turn closer the
people and the places they inhabit. So, you will see a harmonious
relationship between the ancient and the new, where the crochet
stands out and intersects with other arts, making the urban spaces
a cozy house where we wish to come back.

“FESTA DAS LATAS” [CAN FESTIVAL]

The “Festa das Latas” or “Latada” [Can Festival] is the Academy
celebration to receive new students entering the University of
Coimbra, called “caloiros” [freshers]. For a week there are concerts
and numerous cultural and sports activities, and the highlight is the
procession through the city streets, during which the “caloiros”
[freshers] show their sticks, cans and other devices. Arrived on the
banks of the Mondego, the godfathers use a chamber pot to baptize
godchildren with water from the river.

Fair - Exposition and Show of Old and Antique objects in Coimbra.
Already with 25 years of existence, it has a prominent place in the
urban animation agenda, and is an undeniable important event in
the city. As repository of memories, it is a cultural, economic and
social proactive initiative, allowing the selling and buying of collection
and junk objects. It is also a meeting point for those who, every
month, rush to Praça do Comércio, and for the many dozens of
exhibitors/participants from north to south.

exhibition route which follows the most significant moments of

greatest names of the Portuguese literature who passed through

Arte Nova em Coimbra” [The Art Nouveau in Coimbra], covering
buildings and urban furniture associated to the Art Nouveau, and
“Vivências nos Jardins” [Experiences in the Gardens], highlighting the
historical and cultural aspects of the most emblematic gardens in
the city are some of the themes proposed by the Câmara Municipal
