Wittenberg
WORLD
People from all over the world come to Wittenberg

Martin Luther, and to be inspired by the spirit of
the Reformation, which can be felt all around the
historic city centre of the famous Lutherstadt on
the Elbe. Come to the Lutherstadt Wittenberg to
be moved, inspired and awed.
Some visitors take a bike tour through the Lutherstadt Wittenberg on one of Europe’s largest bike
routes; other guests make the pilgrimage to Wittenberg by feet via the Camino de Santiago (Way
of St. James) or the Way of Luther (Lutherweg).
Wittenberg was once the starting point for the
transformation of the world, now the world meets
in Wittenberg!
C U LT U R E
With the countdown to the 500-year anniversary
of the Ninety-Five Theses – the “LutherDecade”
that will continue until 2017 – all eyes in the Christian world but also in the worlds of art, culture
and history are on Wittenberg. Every year there is
an explosion of top-class events, such as art exhibitions, musical performances, symposia, historic
celebrations and festivals that are without compare. Four UNESCO World Heritage sites alone,
the world’s largest museum for the history of the
Reformation and the unique surrounding natural
and cultural “Middle Elbe” landscape, home to
even more UNESCO Cultural and Natural Heritage
sites, make it clear why Wittenberg is a true centre
of world culture.

Anniversary of
the Reformation
2017
Anniversary
of the Reformation 2017
500 Years of Reformation
On the 31st of October 1517, Martin Luther nailed
his 95 Theses against the selling of indulgences on
the door of Wittenberg’s All Saints’ Castle Church,
and thus both transformed the clerical world and
launched a world-wide “Reformation” in politics,
economics, academia, theology, art and culture as
well as in the fabric of society, which continues to
leave its mark even today.
Since then, the Lutherstadt Wittenberg has been
celebrating the 31st of October as the beginning of
the Reformation with one of the largest and most
beautiful festivals in Central Germany, the Reformation Festival, with an historic market, with innu-
3
merable festive church services, one of the largest
meetings of confirmands in Germany, theatre performances, lectures, disputations and glorious concerts during the Renaissance Music Festival.
Tip: Visit the Lutherstadt Wittenberg during
the Reformation Festival and enjoy the unique
religious, historic, artistic and musical experiences that this day brings. Because many
thousands visit the city during this festival,
we recommend that you book your accommodation and itinerary early. Tourist-Information Lutherstadt Wittenberg – straight across
from the famous “Theses Door” – is happy to
help you plan your holiday at any time.
The LutherDecade denotes the ten years leading
up to the 500-year anniversary of the nailing of the
95 Theses, which will be celebrated in 2017 all over
both Germany and the world as the anniversary of
the Reformation. The Lutherstadt Wittenberg will
be a central venue during this anniversary, as it was
here that Martin Luther lived and worked, where he
nailed his Theses to the church door and where he is
buried. Today it is also home to the largest museum
for the history of the Reformation.
Every year during the LutherDecade, one facet of
the Reformation is emphasised, which is then celebrated in the Lutherstadt Wittenberg in a range of
events, exhibitions and congresses as well as musically and artistically.

of the Reformation
In 1698 in Halle, the foundation stone for a new
orphanage was laid – and thus began the Frankesche Stiftungen. Today they have grown into a
Europe-wide, unique cultural educational cosmos
and have been nominated to be listed as a UNESCO
World Heritage site
In 1505, Lucas Cranach
the Elder came to Wittenberg as the court
painter for Friedrich the Wise. His talent as a painter and businessman enabled him to erect his lavish
residence in the Schlossstraße within just a few
years. During the 42 years that Cranach spent in
Wittenberg, the town experienced the largest developmental leap forward in its history.
Experience Wittenberg through the eyes of Cranach!
In a very personal guided tour,
organised just for you, experience
why they say that “Wittenberg is
the mother and Torgau is the nursemaid of the Reformation”. Come to one of the most beautiful Renaissance
towns in Germany. Find out what links Luther’s “Käthe”
with Torgau and speak with the goldsmith mending her
wedding ring. Visit the first national special exhibition
“Luther and the Princes”, which is taking place in Torgau
from May to October to mark the LutherDecade and the
anniversary of the Reformation.

UNESCO World Heritage Castle Church
St. Mary´s Town Church
Luther House
Schlossplatz, Lutherstadt Wittenberg
Kirchplatz 20, Lutherstadt Wittenberg
Collegienstr. 54, Lutherstadt Wittenberg
The All Saints’ Castle Church was erected on the
foundations of the original palace of the Prince
of Sachsen. Luther nailed his famous 95 Theses to
its door. “Our God is a strong castle” – it was these
lines from the well-known psalm and hymn that
Martin Luther hung resplendent in large letters on
the steeple of this imposing house of God. Today,
Luther’s grave and the last resting place of the reformer Philipp Melanchthon can be viewed in the
church’s interior. The All Saints’ Castle Church is one
of Wittenberg’s UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The St. Mary´s Town and Parish Church is the oldest
building in the city and is today one of Wittenberg’s
UNESCO World Heritage sites. The reformer Martin
Luther once preached in this church. His pulpit has
been preserved and can be viewed at the Luther
House where it is currently on loan. His companion,
Johannes Bugenhagen, explained the Reformation
here. Many testaments to the Reformation can be
found in the St. Mary´s Town Church, such as the
Reformation Altar, valuable panels by Cranach, the
artistically decorated baptismal font by Hermann
Vischer the Older, and the magnificent organ and
sacristy.
The Luther House was originally built in the Collegienstraße in Wittenberg as an Augustinian monastery in 1504, before it became Martin Luther’s
residence in 1594 and was later used as the home
of Luther´s family. Today it is the world’s largest
museum dedicated to the history of the Reformation and is in the list of UNESCO World Heritage
sites. During a visit to the Luther House, you should
make sure to view the original Luther parlour, the
university lectern in the large auditorium, an indulgences chest from the period and Martin Luther’s
pulpit. 1,000 original exhibits tell the story of the
life and work of Luther the reformer, but also of
everyday life with his family and the rich history of
his reception.
Due to building maintenance, the All Saints’ Castle
Church can currently only be viewed during a public
guided tour of the building site (January – March only
limitedly): Mo – Fri 10:30 am and 1:30 pm, Sat 10:30

his family, friends and students. Central works,
manuscripts, drawings and paintings create an
impressive picture of Melanchthon’s work. With
its interactive exhibits, the exhibition is a special

Cranach-Höfe
Markt 4 and Schlossstraße 1
The painter Lucas Cranach the Elder was called
to the Saxon Court in Wittenberg by the Elector of Saxony, Friedrich the Wise, in 1505. For
almost half a century he lived here and created paintings that today are housed in some
of the greatest museums in the world. He
painted portraits of electors and reformers,
sketched altarpieces and small cabinet pieces
of Venus, Eve & co. Cranach’s residences and
workspaces were in the Renaissance buildings
Schlossstraße 1 and Markt 4. This is where he
also ran a printing press, in which, amongst
other things, Martin Luther’s translation of the
bible appeared. He ran the only pharmacy in
Wittenberg and acquired privileges for serving
beer and wine. Today you can see the exhibition “Cranach’s World” in the historic Cranach
House at Markt 4, which is part of Saxony-Anhalt’s State Exhibition in 2015. But it is also
possible to take a look over the shoulder of art-

The time-honoured Wittenberg University was
founded in 1502 and outclassed other universities
in Germany of the period. The most important
scholars of the time studied here. Apart from the
Augusteum, the original buildings are no longer
standing. After its consolidation with the University of Halle, a new campus was built. In 1994, LEUCOREA was founded with the aim of re-establishing academic life at the site where one of the most
renowned universities stood 500 years before. It
now carries out both national and international
academic events in Wittenberg.

One of the perhaps most beautiful and emblematic
symbols of the connection between the Lutherstadt
Wittenberg and the rest of the world is the Luther
Garden. This project, being carried out by the Lutheran World Federation, invites churches from all
over the world and of all confessions to sponsor
one of 500 trees in Wittenberg. Each tree is planted
ceremoniously in Wittenberg and later in the hometown of the respective church and is testimony to
the reconciled differences with which churches live
amongst each other today. The 500 trees also stand
for the impact of Martin Luther’s Reformation on the
world and for the 500-year anniversary of the Reformation in 2017. During a walk through Wittenberg’s
ramparts, you will already find more than 200 trees
at different sites. Experience the Luther Garden during your next visit to Wittenberg.

Here, an exhibition unique in Germany about everyday life in the Soviet occupation zone/GDR awaits
you. You can find out how locals lived during the
post-war period and how the “resettlers” dwelled.
The exposition “Wegzeichen – Zeitzeichen. Germans and Russians in Everyday Central Germany
from 1945 to 1992” provides information about a
little-known chapter of East German history.
In 2009, the museum was enlarged by a further
permanent exhibition with the title “Luther in the
GDR”. Here visitors will find answers to questions
about how Evangelical Churches in the GDR and the
GDR state itself dealt with Luther and his legacy in
the mother country of the Reformation.
The Luther-Melanchthon Gynmasium in Wittenberg, in dire need of renovations, was modified according to plans by the famous artist Hundertwasser and completed in 1999. Artists and pupils of the
high school got together to design the interior of
the school in the style of Hundertwasser. Today, the
Hundertwasser School captivates with its many
colourful surfaces and a planted roof. There is an information room for tourists, in which you can find
out more about the school in information panels,
books and information flyers. You can also find your
own Hundertwasser souvenir here and be guided
through the school by the pupils themselves.
The Workmen’s Dwellings were built by the town
planner Georg Haberland and the architect Otto
Rudolf Salvisberg in 1916 with the aim of realising a
uniform worker’s settlement with a stable structural quality. Piesteritz is the first car-free settlement
in Germany and was restored to its original state
for the Expo 2000.

Piesteritz is home to Germany’s only Agrochemical Park, whose core company, the SKW
Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz GmbH, is Germany’s largest urea and ammonia manufacturer.
Alongside 30 other companies, this site is home
to the world’s largest combined biodiesel plant
with oil mill as well as the biomass timber power plant of the city of Leipzig. SKW currently employees 800 people at its Wittenberg site.

Reformation Festival
On the 31st of October 1517, Luther nailed his 95 Theses onto the door of the All Saints’ Castle Church in
Wittenberg. This date is considered to be the beginning of the Reformation. Today, Protestants and confirmands from all over the world celebrate Reformation Day in the Lutherstadt Wittenberg with festive
and religious services.

Luther’s Wedding
Wittenberg Renaissance Music Festival
From the 12th to 14th of June 2015, the Lutherstadt
Wittenberg celebrates one of the most wonderful
festivals in Germany at original Reformation sites.
Tens of thousands of visitors celebrate “Luther’s
Wedding”, with the Luther couple chosen every
year. For three days in summer, the Lutherstadt’s
Old Town is transformed into a medieval site. Back
then – on the 13th of June 1525 – the former monk
Martin Luther and the escaped nun Katharina von
Bora said “yes” in the town on the Elbe. These days,
locals and guests to the Lutherstadt Wittenberg celebrate this historic moment every year. Celebrate
with them when the bridal couple and its 2,000
splendidly dressed wedding guests move through
the lanes of the Lutherstadt Wittenberg Old Town.
Look forward to colourful robes, live music, jugglers,
As an ambassador for the LutherDecade, the Wittenberg Renaissance Music Festival invites guests
to Wittenberg from the 26th of October to the 1st of
November in the run-up to Reformation Day to experience the soundscape of the Renaissance together with the unique history of this town. The trademarks of the festival are – alongside an exciting
concert program, which presents the diverse facets
of Renaissance music – numerous workshops, an
instrument exhibition and the popular Renaissance
ball.
All of this takes place at authentic venues, e.g. at
original sites of the Reformation movement that
are of historic significance for Protestant church
history.

Wittenberg 1533. Katharina Luther has many hungry mouths to feed when Michael Stifel, a pastor

Excursions
from the Lutherstadt Wittenberg –
Hints
Rousseau Island in the Dessau-Wörlitzer Garden Ferropolis
The Lutherstadt Wittenberg is situated in the midst
of a fantastical natural and cultural landscape that
is almost without compare in the rest of Europe.
Wörlitz Castle
Not just the Elbe, but two natural reserves, the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve, the industrial park Ferropolis, the romantic “Garden Kingdom” and the
famous Bauhaus can all be discovered here. Tourist
Information Lutherstadt Wittenberg has all of the
ticket and information material ready for your journey of discovery, but can also provide you with various forms of transport, from bikes to Trabants to
rickshaws, coaches or boats. Talk to us about your
preferred form of transport or a travel guide to the
surrounding region. We are happy to offer you personal travel guides in a number of languages.
Make sure to visit the following destinations:
Wörlitz
Ferropolis/Gräfenhainichen
Wörlitz is situated only 30 minutes away from the
Lutherstadt Wittenberg by car. In Wörlitz, a glorious
landscaped garden awaits you. Constructed at the
end of the 18th century, it is one of the earliest and
most significant English-style landscape gardens
on the European continent. The Garden Kingdom
Dessau-Wörlitz was created by Prince Leopold III
Friedrich Franz of Anhalt-Dessau (1740-1817). With
his various reforms, his goal was the harmonious
unity of human and nature. The palaces, gardens
and avenues of the Garden Kingdom nestle so naturally into the meadowy countryside that the park
seems to stretch on forever.
Ferropolis ist situated about 30 kilometres from
the Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The “City of Iron” near
Gräfenhainichen is an industry museum and an
event venue for festivals and sporting events. This
260,000 square metre area was once the site of
brown coal mining. Today, the impressive machines
and excavators on the site are reminiscent of the
days of surface mining.

Torgau – once the residence of the Saxon princes,
is located only 50 km along the Elbe from Wittenberg. The almost completely preserved historic
town centre with Hartenfels Palace, churches, the
Town Hall and resplendent Renaissance town houses still exudes the spirit of the former metropolis
of the Electorate of Saxony. Torgau is considered
the “Nursemaid of the Reformation.” Martin Luther
stayed in Torgau more than 40 times and a strong
middle class here supported his ideas. His wife,
Katharina, died in 1552 in Torgau. Her grave in the
St. Mary´s Town Church and a memorial are testament to the work of this courageous woman.

Our recommendation: Discover the Garden
Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz during a tour that
points out the special features of the park!
Afterwards you can enjoy the beauty of the
park again from water during a gondola trip
(May-August). Gondola trips with coffee service
or through the canals and lakes at sunset are
an extraordinary experience. These trips can be
booked with waiting staff for groups.

Fläming Nature Park
Dübener Heath
Bad Düben
The Fläming landscape, approx. 23 kilometres
north-west from Wittenberg, is characterised by
Romantic river valleys, pristine deciduous and pine
forests, rolling hills, green meadows, expansive
fields and small, hidden villages. Adventure holidaymakers can discover the Fläming Nature Park
on a range of nature trails or on the loop roads and
routes of the Fläming Skate, a 225 kilometre-long
skating and biking trail far away from noisy traffic.
Europe’s longest traffic-free inline skating path can
also be experienced in winter on cross-country skis.
National bike paths – such as the Euroroute R1/D3,
the Elbe Cycle Route, the Cycle Route Berlin-Leipzig and the Tour Brandenburg – can be reached in
Fläming coming from the Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
The Dübener Heath Nature Park stretches from
Wittenberg in the South over a surface of approx.
75,000 hectares. This is the location of the largest
mixed forest in Central Germany in a hilly landscape
shaped by the Ice Age. The lake and river landscape
of the Dübener Heath is home to cranes, ernes, beavers and other animal species. Go on a guided tour
here with nature park rangers and discover some
of the 350 different species of butterfly and 169
species of bird. Many so-called “heath magnets”,
such as mazes, rope courses, a zoo, heath villages,
moorlands and heathlands with beavers, the Reinharz Water Palace and other beautiful places await
your visit, right at the gates of the Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
During your excursion to Bad Düben, just 37 kilometres from the Lutherstadt Wittenberg, discover
the revered spa gardens, a 1000-year-old castle,
the modern wellness centre “Heide Spa”, the pretty,
restored inner city, the Kossa military museum and
much more.
Dessau-Roßlau and Bauhaus
Dessau-Roßlau is situated about 35 kilometres
from the Lutherstadt Wittenberg. When the Bauhaus settled here in 1925/26, it was considered the
capital of the modern age. The Bauhaus building
was built at this time together with the small Masters’ Houses settlement, based on blueprints by W.

The Birth House of Martin Luther in Eisleben
Gropius. Artists such as Klee, Kandinsky and Feiniger lived and worked here. The Bauhaus and the
Masters’ Houses are open to the public.
Whereas Dessau made a name for itself during the
Bauhaus period, Roßlau was a shipping city. The
12th century Water Castle and classical buildings
by the architect Bandhauer are some of the most
significant buildings in Roßlau. Treasures in the
museum and galleries, the Anhaltische Theatre’s
varied repertoire and a diverse range of leisure pursuits also wait to be discovered..
Lutherstädte Eisleben and Mansfeld
Follow Luther’s footprints during a daytrip to the
Lutherstadt Eisleben, approx. 115 kilometres away
from the Lutherstadt Wittenberg, as well as to
Mansfeld Lutherstadt, situated about 130 kilometres away.
Martin Luther was born in the town of Eisleben
on the 10th of November 1483. As if by fate, his
life also ended in his hometown on the 18th of
February 1546. The house in which he was both
born and died and the Lutherarmenfreischule were
both recognised as UNESCO World Heritage sites in
1996. Luther’s birth house is the oldest museum in
the German-speaking realm. Luther spent the first
months of his life in Eisleben with his parents and
siblings, then moved to Mansfeld and spent his
childhood there. Visitors can experience the particular flair of the historic Old Town with its market
place, its handsome townhouses, its historic town
hall and the Luther memorial. One authentic Luther
site is St. Annen Church, with its stone carved-bible,
the only one of its kind in Europe. Luther visited the
church in 1516. During your visit to Eisleben, discover the inner city “Luther Path Eisleben” with its 12
stations, with both authentic and staged Luther
sites that connect modern art with interior design.
In the permanent exhibition, “Luther’s Last Journey”
in Luther’s recently opened last residence, find out
how he spent his final days in his home town and
how Luther dealt with death and dying. You can look
forward to Luther’s restored and redesigned baptistery, which has been reopened with an immersion
baptismal font as the “Zentrum Taufe” – “Baptism
Centre.”
In 1484, Mansfeld became the home of family
Luther. Today, the preserved house of his parents
and the former school of the cleric are open to the
public. In honour of Luther, every year on the first
Saturday after Easter, his first day of school is celebrated in Mansfeld according to historical tradition.
Alongside the Luther House in Mansfeld, there are
other valuable sights in this town, such as the Luther
Fountain at Luther Square, built in 1913, the “Germania” war memorial, the St. Georg Town Church, the
railway viaduct and Mansfeld Palace with its Castle
Church. The Lutherstadt Eisleben and the Mansfeld
countryside do not just offer historic sights, but also
art and culture at the State Theatre of Saxony-Anhalt and the largest funfair in Central Germany,
the Eisleben Wiese. Cyclists can ride the Euroroute
around the monastery See with a stop at the newly
built Helfta Cloister. The Luther Hiking Trail Saxony-Anhalt links the Lutherstädte Wittenberg, Eisleben and Mansfeld.

Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve
This area has been the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve since 2006. It comprises a surface area of
125,743 hectares, in which there is much to discover, only 35km away from Wittenberg. You can take
part in interesting events or participate in excursions and find out all there is to know about the
reserve, its plant and animal inhabitants as well as
its tasks and goals.
Auenhaus Information Pavilion
Those who would like to find out more about the
reserve and its inhabitants should definitely plan a
visit to the “Auenhaus” information centre between
Dessau-Roßlau and Oranienbaum. The exhibition in
the pavilion informs visitors about this extensive
ecosystem and the living conditions in this animal
and plant world. In the outdoor area there is a herb
and vegetable garden with seating. A nature trail
takes visitors to a beaver habitat.

Berlin
Goethe Schiller Memorial in Weimar
27
Approx. 115 kilometres away from the Lutherstadt
Wittenberg is Germany’s capital city, Berlin. Owing
to the convenient location of the Lutherstadt Wittenberg between the metropolitan regions of Berlin and
Leipzig/Halle, the federal capital of Berlin is perfect
for a daytrip. Enjoy city flair, visit one of the numerous
Bach Memorial in Leipzig
musicals and concerts or go shopping and then relax
on your journey back to the Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
An ICE connection will take you to the capital by train
in 45 minutes.
Leipzig
From the Lutherstadt Wittenberg you can get to
the Bach and Trade Fair Town of Leipzig in just one
hour by car. Shaped by the lives and work of numerous artists such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Felix
Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Johann Wolfgang von
Goethe, Saxony’s economic and trade centre enthrals visitors with its cultural diversity. Alongside
Leipzig’s most famous landmark, the Monument to
the Battle of Nations, the Leipzig Zoo – one of the
oldest and most diverse zoos in the world – and the
concert hall, the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig, are other
highlights that are well worth seeing.
Weimar
Another cultural centre of Europe is Weimar, 195
kilometres away – i.e. 2 hours by car – from the Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Famous as the work place of
Goethe and Schiller as well as the original location
of the Bauhaus, Weimar is one of the main destinations for cultural holidaymakers. Highlights include
Goethe’s residence with the national museum at
Frauenplan, the Bauhaus Museum and the Rococo
Hall of the Duchess Anna Amalia Library. But Weimar
has more than just classical literature and revolutionary design history on offer: Relax during a walk
through the inspirational Park an der Ilm, or stroll
through Weimar’s historic streets. Weimar has two
entries in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites –

Wartburg in Eisenach
with 16 buildings and various ensembles of “Weimar
Classicism” as well as Bauhaus sites.
Wartburg/Eisenach
The Wartburg “watches over” the city of Eisenach
in Thüringen and has been a World Heritage site
since 1999. The Wartburg is embedded in German
history in a very unique way. This is where the reformer Martin Luther translated the New Testament
into German, where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
stayed frequently and where the Wartburgfest took
place in 1817, a famous meeting of German student
State Capital Magdeburg
fraternities. This is where the German national colours were determined – black, red, gold. Today the
Wartburg is one of the most well-known concert
halls in Thüringen. In the five-star hotel on the Wartburg you can also sleep excellently, celebrate or hold
meetings. Once you are in Eisenach, you should also
pay a visit to the Bach House, the first museum dedicated to Johann Sebastian Bach in Germany.
Tourist Information Lutherstadt Wittenberg
provides you with comprehensive information and booking material. In addition to this,
we also offer tour guides that can accompany
you from Wittenberg to your goal and provide
interesting knowledge and customised tours.
Magdeburg
Halle
Once a member of the Hanseatic League, the state
capital of Saxony-Anhalt with its 1200 years of history and numerous sightseeing attractions offers
visitors innumerable opportunities for an unforgettable daytrip. The Elbe metropolis of Magdeburg is
situated about 85km from the Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Well worthwhile are the St. Mauritius and
St. Katharina Cathedral, the old market with the
“Magdeburg Knight” and the Kloster Unser Lieben
Frauen art museum, which is an important site for
contemporary art and sculpture in Saxony-Anhalt.
But Magdeburg also has much more on offer: for
example the Magdeburg waterway crossroads with
the longest canal bridge in the world or the “GREEN
CITADEL OF MAGDEBURG”, created by Friedensreich
Hundertwasser.
Halle an der Saale is the cultural and research capital
of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. In this 1200-year-old
town, which has still managed to retain its youthful
flair, numerous testaments to its extensive history
have been preserved that are well worth taking a
look at and experiencing. Castles and museums, old
churches, parks, the zoo and picturesque landscapes
along the Saale River invite visitors to linger. They
stand in stark contrast to all that has arisen in recent times. Halle is a town of music, acting and art.
The festival in honour of Georg Friedrich Händel,
seven theatres, the Staatskapelle, numerous galleries and artists’ meetings attract thousands of visitors every year. Whether you’re looking for history
or culture – everyday, vitality awaits you all around
the five towers of Halle an der Saale. Let yourself get
carried away.

cranach der jüngere 2015
landesausstellung sachsen-anhalt

In the basement vault you will receive information about the day-to-day life of the Luther family.
Daily life is staged here using carved figurines and
sounds.
In the municipal forest you can experience nature,
find out more about nature conservation or just
relax.
NABU remains a centre of conservation and environmental education that runs animal enclosures
and nature education and experience trails.
A nature playground with barbecue huts invites
young and old to take part in exciting forest adventures.
The Wittenberg Zoo is on of Germany’s smallest
zoos but a real gem for those looking to relax as
well as for researchers both young and old. In the
heart of the municipal park, a historic casemate
is at its centre – a fortress with the former town
fortifications. Today, Saxony-Anhalt’s only cold-water aquarium is located inside this building, with
about 25 different fish species from the Elbe-Elster
region. In the animal enclosures, you will encounter 15 species of mammal and over 20 different
species of birds, these include four species of apes,
Meer cats, a range of parrots, owls and birds of
prey. The petting zoo is very popular with its goats,
sheep and rabbits, as is the beautifully landscaped
turtle pond.

Discover one of Europe’s largest theatres in a unique
cultural landscape between World Heritage sites,
Luther, Bauhaus and the Garden Kingdom! The Anhalt Theatre in Dessau is steeped in tradition and
is currently in the midst of its 220th season. In the
four categories of acting, musical theatre, ballet and
puppet theatre, it presents the performing arts at the
highest level. The Anhalt Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of General Musical Director Antony
Hermus, is at home here and offers grand symphony
and chamber music concerts. In summer it presents,
amongst other things, the popular lake concerts in
the Garden Kingdom of Wörlitz.
The swimming pool in the Lutherstadt Wittenberg
was reopened in 2011 after comprehensive renovations. A 25-metre long pool, a children’s water playground and a learners’ pool make this swimming
pool a feel-good oasis for young and old. In the sauna area you will find a steam sauna with a starry
sky, a Finnish sauna and a bio-sauna with light and
sound effects as well as an open-air infusion sauna
with a heated outdoor swimming area.
In Ferropolis, your childlike instincts will come to
life. Young and old can get active in this town of
iron located about 30 kilometres away from the Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Equipment that can be tried
