Professional Record
In the late 80ies of the last century visionary pioneers in Computer Science envisaged the
potential of ICT for people with disabilities - visionary because they encountered that using this
potential asks both for research and development in ICT but also for new service and support
structures for people with disabilities at universities.
The initiative they took at the University of Linz provided me, when graudating from my studies,
the opportunity to enter at an early stage the emerging field of Assistive Technologies and
eAccessibility in Computer Science in close relatioin with day to day practice of service provision
for people with disabilities. In the following a record of selected professional engagements:

Research Record
My research activities from the beginning have been closely related to the practical challenges of
service provision for people with disabilities. ICT enters almost any area of society and introduces
the flexible and adaptable Human-Computer Interface (HCI) as a universal access point. If
Assistive Technologies (AT) and functionalities are at hand and if mainstream systems and
services support “eAccessibility”, people with disabilities can “interface the standard HCI” and
thereby participate in society by using the same systems and services as anybody else in a more
independent and inclusive manner. My research therefore focused on advancements in AT and
eAccessibility and its impact on society, in particular in educational contexts.
Fields of Research
My general research interests can be categorised in a more granular way as: (numbers refer to
the most relevant publications and projects displayed later in the CV)
1. Assistive Technologies (AT) to allow better access mainstream ICT systems and services
and the HCI by people with disabilities with a special focus on

Teaching Record
University and Academic Teaching
Including Assistive Technologies (AT) and Software/Web-(e)Accessibility into the curriculum of
Computer Science and related fields has been the focus of my academic teaching activities. An
additional focus has been given to AT facilitate Inclusive eLearning and eAccessibility as part of
curricula of teacher education programmes, in particular special or inclusive teaching programmes
at according University Colleges for Education (former “Teacher Academies”) in Austria. A number
of activities have been related to advanced education and training on the job for special and
mainstream teachers.
Further on I have been involved in teaching administration like commissions for curricula
development and update as e.g. for the interdisciplinary Master in Web Sciences which will
incorporate accessibility regarding technical, social, didactical and legal aspects.
As an initiative to bridge the gap between scientific education and high level formation of experts
for practice I initiated the implementation of two 4 semester university courses which I am leading
as the scientific co-ordinator and where I am teaching several subjects. These courses have been
offered and officially accredited at the University of Linz:
2002 - 2005
2004 - 2006
Scientific and organisational co-ordinator of the development of the university
course “Barrierefreies Web Design” (Accessible Web Design, bfwd,
www.bfwd.at), funded by the University of Linz, the Austrian Ministry of Education
and Culture and the EU-European Social Fund; graduation and accreditation as
Academic Expert in Accessible Web Design.
Scientific and organisational co-ordinator of the development of the university
course “Assistierende Technologien” (Assistive Technologies) (assistec,
www.assistec.at), funded by the University of Linz, the Austrian Ministry of
Education and Culture and by the EU-European Social Fund; graduation and
accreditation as Academic Expert in Assistive Technologies.
The courses have been the starting point of several national (e.g. the Austrian Accessibility
Academy) and international (e.g. the EU-Leonardo Da Vinci project Web_Access, the joint master
development in co-operation with University Zyed, The Netherlands) initiatives. Due to the fact that
practice needs shorter and more practical (non-academic) course offers, both course have been
modularised after 2006 and are now offered in a more flexible manner in cooperation with the
Austrian Computer Society.
The following table provides an overview to my university and academic teaching:

Diploma Theses at the University of Linz
Since 1993 I have been supervising more than 80 master theses at our institute (9 ongoing to
date) and I have been involved as co-supervisor in 12 external master theses (1 ongoing). All of
them are in close relation with my field of research and teaching.

Vocational Training and Teaching
My teaching record also includes activities in Know-How Transfer to bring the potential of ICT/AT
and the elaborated body of knowledge on how to apply them into practice. Numerous small and
bigger seminars and workshops, including major Austrian private and public
organizations/companies have been performed, in particular in close cooperation with the Austrian
Computer Society (www.ocg.at) and the European Computer Driving Licence (www.ecdl.at).
Only one recent major success and step forward is mentioned: In cooperation with OCT and other
parters I managed to establish a training and certification programme in Austria for
Web/information designers in cooperation with the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and its section
UBIT (business councelling, accounting and IT services). Based on holding the certficicat of a
Web Accessibility Expert, Austrian Companies can apply for councelling in web accessibility which
is payed but to 70% out of public funds. We have been in charge of developing the curriculum and
now for offering the courses which prepare for the exam to get hold of the certificate in
cooperation
with
the

company
icite
(http://www.incite.at/ausbildung/de/lehrgaenge/webaccessibility/). A roadshow will advertise this
unique product to get started with accessibility in 2015/16.
