S eldom is there such a concentration of talent. Robin Verheyen is a Belgian who has made New York his home. Now in his mid-twenties, Verheyen has already gathered up a considerable list of prizes—and an astounding variety of musical endeavours—to show for himself since his youth. At the age of 18 he was already playing in a big band under the direction of renowned American composer Maria Schneider; at 22 he moved to Paris, at 23 to New York. He won prizes as best soloist at festivals in Brussels and the Basque town of Getxo, and one for composition at the gathering in the Parisian district of La Défense. But what is much more impressive than all the success is the music to be heard on Starbound. The pieces reveal a soloist of enormous flexibility on both soprano and tenor saxophone. The majority of compositions are by Verheyen, and they are pieces with an especially sensual strength and lyrical beauty. Verheyen’s international quartet recorded Starbound in April 2009 at Pirouet’s studio in Munich, Germany. The group is composed of top-level musicians, all of whom have performed on various Pirouet productions. Bill Carrothers plays the piano and has made a name for himself with his brilliant, joyous, and unconventional recordings. Nicholas Thys plays bass; he is a distinctive composer and band leader as well as an instrumentalist with a wide-awake musical 2 imagination. Dré Pallemaerts plays drums; he is a playing partner with sensitivity and finesse who especially treasures the communicative interchange in trio and quartet—and he knows how to push the players at the right moment. Four strong individuals, and at the same time four masters of team play. The art of interaction pervades these recordings. Thereby an ambience develops in which the saxophone functions as the centre of a musical stream of consciousness. Robin Verheyen often focuses on the soprano saxophone; taking advantage of an exceptionally smooth tone, his smooth-flowing lines sometimes appear as if they were traced with the finger over a velvety surface. And then again, they emerge as fresh, sharply contoured vapour trails highlighted against a clear blue sky,—as in the piece The Flight of the Eagle. And then in the title piece Starbound, there is an inventive intensity that leaves the listener breathless. On Lamenting, a piece that, because of its length and expressive depth, could be considered the heart of the CD, Verheyen plays tenor saxophone. On it he nurtures a finely modulating sound that oscillates in gripping musical lament—at first velvet-soft, then ever more compact and expressive. The results: an explosion of emotions, but one that always stays under complete control as far as the technique of playing goes. The purest of sounds, the highest art of tonal colouring and contrast—a masterpiece! Press release Robin Verheyen: Starbound Release date: October 30th 2009 Pirouet Records PIT3043 press release PIROUET Records P.O. Box 15 17 25 · 80050 Munich · Germany www.pirouetrecords.com · [email protected] phone: +49-(0)89-55 077674 It’s astounding just how congenially the bass, piano, and drums play with and around the saxophone voice time and again on this CD. It almost sounds as if the arms, hands, and fingers of these musicians are controlled by a single brain. Every nuance, every passing musical gesture has a meaningful connection to the whole—a whole that has its own intensively modelled atmosphere that the listener breaths in and takes to heart. And the quartet’s unusual approach to interpretation is amply demonstrated in the translucently played standard I wish I Knew, a melancholy miniature performed with charm and quiet strength. And then there are the original compositions. In the ones that come from the bandleader, one can hear his other spe- 3 cial talent alongside the saxophone solos. The instantly entrancing sound that Verheyen is able to create, as, say in the chromatically ascending figures on the composition Waves, is not often found in jazz. Verheyen’s compositions have a multitude of extremely different facets—from one piece to the next, there are continually new and exiting discoveries. The young saxophonist’s Pirouet debut is a CD for listeners who want to be challenged and who treasure the art of nuance. The many subtle shadings are more and more fascinating with each successive listening. Starbound is the atmospheric musical adventure of a multi-faceted musician— a musician who will be much-talked-about in the future, a future in which for Robin Verheyen the sky is the limit! One of my strong believes is the fact that it’s important to have a real band that stays together for a long period of time. So when I was asked in 2006 by CC De Warande in Belgium to form a new band for my residency there, I thought of musicians that not only I really wanted to work with, but also a band that could work together for many years. Since then the band has undergone one change, Remi Vignolo (who stopped playing the double bass, to pursue his career as a drummer) was replaced by Nicolas Thys. An important aspect of a real group is also that all members are equal, and although I brought in most of the music for this recording session, the music that you will hear is the 4 result of a group effort and not of a leader telling his band what to play. That is why some improvisations might sound like tunes, and some tunes might sound improvised. The input of Bill, Nic and Dré into this recording is invaluable. When we play with this quartet I try to give them absolute freedom to express themselves within the music so we can create something that is a 100 percent in the moment. Most of the music on this album was written only a couple days prior to the actual recording session in between two tours in Brussels. Although I had some sketches of tunes, a lot of it was only worked out during those two days. During two rehearsals before the start of our tour, I was able to get the input of the other musicians and make the final changes to the music. In sincerely hope you will enjoy the music on this record and that the music we played on this session in Munich will take you on a journey to the stars. Has called a variety of cities his home (Turnhout, Amsterdam, Paris, New York). One can definitely say that Robin Verheyen has a focused approach to his career. Born in Turnhout in 1983, Robin Verheyen first studied for three years in Belgium, then two years in the Netherlands, and one year as an honour student (“dean’s list”) at the Manhattan School of Music with Dave Liebman, Steve Slagle, Frank Vaganée, Jasper Blom, Ferdinand Povel, Dick Oatts, and John Ruocco. He ended his musical study with honours in Amsterdam. In 2001, at the age of 18, played at the Middelheim Jazz Festival in Belgium with the big band under the direction of Maria Schneider. In 2004 he won prizes as best soloist at the International Jazz Contest Hoeilaart (Belgium) and the Getxo Jazz Contest in Spain. In 2005 Verheyen moved to Paris for a year where he played in bands led by Giovanni Falzone, Remi Vignolo, Nelson Veras, and Bruno Angelici und was a member of the Belgian group Quartetts Saxkartel (with Kurt Van Herck, Sara Meyer, and Tom Van Dyck). In 2006 Saxkartel won the jury prize at the Tremplin Jazz Avignon in 5 France. Verheyen is also a member of the Belfin Quartet, which includes the Finnish musicians pianist Aki Rissanen and drummer Ville Pynssi, along with the Belgian bassist Joachim Florent. In 2006 the Belfin Quartett won the prize for best composition at the music competition at La Défense in Paris. In 2007 Robin Verheyen moved to New York, where he currently lives. There he has played and recorded with the Pascal Niggenkemper Trio featuring Tyshawn Sorey (At the 2009 BMW Jazz Award, Pascal Niggenkemper took over for Minsarah Band member Jeff Denson, who had to make a break from playing because of an accident), the Roy Assaf/ Eddy Khaimovich Quartet featuring Roy Hargrove, as well as the bands 4 Runner and Roscopaje. Along with his international Quartet, Robin Verheyen has formed a second quartet in New York with trumpeter Ralph Alessi, bassist Thomas Morgan, and drummer Jeff Davis. He has played as sideman with, among others, Branford Marsalis, Charnett Moffett, Eric Revis, Jeff Tain Watts, Joey Calderazzo, Jonathan Blake, Maria Schneider, Massimo Biolcati, Nelson Veras, Ravi Coltrane, Roy Hargrove, Toots Thielemans, Tyshawn Sore, and Will Calhoun. While working as CC de Warande artist in residence in his hometown of Turnhout in 2006/2007, he formed his new quartet with top-level musicians, all of whom have previously recorded various highly praised CDs on the Pirouet label, including recording together in trio. Playing with Verheyen are the American pianist Bill Carrothers (Pirouet CDs Home Row from 2008, Keep Your Sunny Side Up from 2007, I Love Paris from 2005), the Belgian drummer Dré Pallemaerts (Pirouet CD I Love Paris) and the Belgian bassist Nicolas Thys (Pirouet CDs Virgo from 2008, I Love Paris from 2005, Fair Way and Lotus Blossom, both 2003). In 2007 the Robin Verheyen Quartet did their first tour and played at the Jazz Middelheim Festival in Antwerp, Belgium as well as at the Paris Jazz Festival. In 2008 their first CD Painting Space was released. In 2009 there followed Verheyen’s second release, Starbound, on the Munich-based Pirouet label. With the release of this new CD, the Belgian saxophonist who now calls New York home could well see an increase in name recognition. When he first appeared on the New York jazz scene he was immediately celebrated as a major new discovery, playing with such greats as bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Bill Stewart. Carrothers moved to Michigan a few years ago. From there he radically re-worked his musical ideas and program concepts. Along the way he has also received a variety of prestigious awards, among them the German Recording Industry’s prize for “best record”, and the French “Diapason d’Or”. Bill Carrothers often approaches the interpretation of jazz standards from an intriguingly different angle than most other musicians. And it is always intensely exciting. Born in 1964, Bill Carrothers has mastered a seldomfound combination: he plays music that is highly stimulating intellectually, and yet also has an extremely direct emotional quality. These are qualities that often work against each other, but in Carrothers’ hands they are clearly cultivated in every composition. There are great examples of Carrothers’ skills in his three Pirouet CDs, I Love Paris (2005) with Belgian musicians Nicolas Thys and Dré Pallemaerts, Keep Your Sunny Side Up (2007) with American compatriots Ben Street and Ari Hoenig and Home Row (2008) with Gary Peacock and Bill Stewart. Born in 1968, the Belgian Nicolas Thys is a much sought-after sideman, whether it be in his home city of Brussels, or during the eight years (1999-2007) that he lived in New York City. His first CD as a bandleader was Virgo, released on Pirouet Records in 2009. He has worked with musicians and groups spanning a variety of styles, including Mal Waldron, Zap Mama, Lee Konitz, and Brazilian Girls. Thys knows many musical worlds from the inside-out, and elements from these worlds flow finely back into his music. Pirouet CD listeners will recognise Thys from his work with pianist Bill Carrothers (I Love Paris, 2005), with saxophonist Jason Seizer (Fair Way, 2003) and with pianist Walter Lang (Lotus Blossom, 2003). Born in Antwerp in 1964, Dré Pallemaerts is one of Belgium’s most active drummers. He received his first drums at the age of 15. In 1975, he starts studying music at the Academy in Antwerp. 1984 he began to study in the USA. He has played with Archie Shepp, Art Farmer, Bill Carrothers, Dee Daniels, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Frank Amsallem, Franck Aviabile, Joe Lovano, John Ruocco, John Scofield, Judy Niemack, Mal Waldron, Norma Winstone, Philip Catherine, Slide Hampton and Toots Thielemans. Dré Pallemaerts teaches at the “Conservatoire Nationale Supérieur de Musique” in Paris and at the “Lemmens Instituut” in Leuven-Belgium. As sideman he plays on I Love Paris (2005) with Bill Carrothers and Nicolas Thys and on the new release Starbound with Robin Verheyen, Bill Carrothers and Nicolas Thys (Release date October 30, 2009). The Flight of the Eagle. I Wish I Knew feststellen.
