September in Boston statt. 4 In Nashville fand vom 23.-25. On behalf of the American BACnet Manufacturers Association, I would like to thank the BACnet Interest Group Europe for its leadership in promoting interoperability through BACnet. The BACnet Europe Journal has been a tremendous tool for raising the awareness of BACnet around the world, and is another example of the continuing BACnet partnership between North America and Europe. The year 2006 will see BACnet continue to spread geographically as more and more countries become aware of its benefits. ASHRAE recently issued the 165th BACnet vendor ID, and there are now hundreds of products throughout the world that support BACnet. Here are just a few of the more recent positive developments with BACnet: The annual BACnet Interoperability Workshop was held on September 14-16 in Boston, MA. In Nashville, from October 23-25 the 7th BACnet Conference & Expo took place. This has also been an event for end users, consultants, and integrators. The conference was designed to provide BACnet education at all levels and the expo gave attendees exposure to BACnet in action. As the BACnet community worldwide continues to expand and mature, we look forward to more opportunities to partner with BIG-EU to provide building owners with real solutions for interoperability. The BACnet Testing Laboratory recently completed the third phase of BACnet testing, which includes BACnet Building Controllers (BBC) and routers. The ISO recently approved new procedures that will allow updates to BACnet to be incorporated into the ISO standard more rapidly. This will help insure that systems that comply with the ISO standard will keep closely in-step with systems that comply with the BACnet standard. Adding Value to your Real Estate! Dear Reader, Much to my delight, I present you the third edition of the BACnet Journal on behalf of the BACnet Interest Group Europe. 2005 sees BACnet celebrating its tenth birthday. During this time it has established itself as a comprehensive, open communication standard in the building automation, security and life safety management arena. But why is BACnet so attractive to investors, planners and building owners alike? Very briefly: 1. BACnet can be used independently of special hardware or operating systems. It does not require special licences. 2. Unlike building automation solutions that use proprietary communication protocols, BACnet is an ISO-standard that offers a substantially higher degree of protection to a customer’s investment. It also supports communication through web-services and thus supports the integration of ‘field data’ into Back Office applications. 3. BACnet uses standard network options such as the Internet Protocol. This enables building automation, security and life safety management functions to fit neatly into your existing IT infrastructure. 4. BACnet is a comprehensive and powerful standard. 5. Positive project experiences. Just look at the BACnet projects described in the Journal. Not only is BACnet the de-facto-standard for public construction projects, it is increasingly being used in the private sector. 6. It enjoys world-wide support from numerous manufacturers. This allows comparison of offerings and competition and with this, improved service quality. 7. The BACnet standard doesn’t just cover HVAC-control. It also spans other building management applications such as safety and security. This makes for a useful and flexible integration platform, one that can help to achieve lower operating costs and drive performance improvement. Viel Freude beim Lesen! The journal in front of you shows how BACnet is alive! With the so called plug-fest in May 2005, the big players in HVAC control demonstrated their commitment to giving the market BACnet solutions that readily co-operate right from the start. Likewise, May saw representatives from various national BACnet interest groups meet to exchange experiences and co-ordinate their activities under the umbrella of the BIGEU. Interest in BACnet is growing throughout Europe. And September 2005 saw another highlight with the BACnet Planner Forum talking about ‘BACnet on the move - success factors of modern building automation’. More information on this event follows in the pages of this Journal. Happy reading! The integration capability of Metasys based on BACnet and Web Services provides full communication throughout the building automation system in the new development centre at ANDREAS STIHL AG & Co. KG. Facility management staff can rationalise their work and optimise energy consumption not only in the development centre but also throughout the entire plant. Foto: Stihl The specific requirements for the power supply installations and the wood shaving removal systems in the test rooms place enormous demands on the building systems. The new Stihl development centre is located in Waiblingen-Neustadt, Germany and staffed by 370 personnel. Completed in the middle of 2004 for a total investment of 40 million euros, it accommodates laboratories, workshops, offices and numerous test rooms with extensive media provision. Enormous demands are placed on the building systems, in particular from the specific requirements for the power supply installations and the wood shaving removal systems in the test rooms. Around 1300 open and closed loop control circuits have been installed in the development centre. For the building automation system this has resulted in about 9000 data points at the field level. Data from these points can be recorded, evaluated and controlled at the automation level using Network Automation Engines (NAEs). Interoperable integration The seven NAEs from Johnson are based on the BACnet protocol standard. This means that all BACnetcompatible equipment and systems can be integrated in the system with full interoperability. In addition, each automation station has an integrated web server so each NAE can be accessed via an internet browser. The Stihl operations team can now access the individual automation stations via the intranet with the aid of an internet browser. External access to the network is also possible. All the Metasys components have been integrated in the IT structure, particularly in the existing security concept. Not only is there access for the operating personnel via control stations but the shift managers have five touch panels on site for controlling building management sys- tems, again via an internet browser. Usage of the various media can therefore be controlled individually for all the test rooms. Thomas Brandin, Head of Works Planning at Stihl is very pleased with the results: “We are happy to have found such a competent partner in Johnson Controls. In only a very short time they have been able to produce a sophisticated and innovative building automation system for the new development centre. With BACnet in combination with WebServices we have been able to meet the various user requirements of the operators and the development engineers in the development centre. This provides the perfect platform for operating the building economically both now and in the future.” The recorded data from the development centre is also forwarded via BACnet. The server provides the data available via a BACnet/OPC server interface to the Stihl facilitywide Supervisory System, based on Wondware Intouch. The installation from Johnson Controls is thereby fully integrated in the customary user interface in the new development centre and provides simultaneous access via web browser or BACnet. Overview of Honeywell’s open enterprise management system at Frankenstadion, Nuremberg. FIFA – Federation Internationale de Football Association - regulations for international match venues necessitated reconstruction of the Frankenstadion in Nuremberg, Germany. The Frankenstadion is one of the twelve sport stadiums in which the FIFA World Championship 2006™ matches will be held. New stands were erected in the south and north curves and the pitch was lowered by approximately 1.30m during the approx. 56 million Europroject. This gives the spectators in the lower seat rows a better view of the match and meets the FIFA requirement for all seats to have an unobstructed view of the pitch. The newly reconstructed stadium now offers 44,308 completely covered seats for the World Championship. Hospitality suites Main stand - Fan relations The four-storey hospitality building was erected in the undeveloped south-west curve and is directly connected to the main stand, which is under one huge canopy. VIP rooms with a total area of 2200m² were built for 800 guests as well as 400m² multi-functional rooms. The VIP area in the lower part of the main stand will give 800 guests-of-honour comfortable seats with a direct view of the World Championship matches. The front of the main stand, a listed building, remains untouched. The new team changing rooms are located in the northern part of the main stand. A technology building, under a 1000 m² roof will be the new meeting point for fans. Built on the Max-MorlockPlatz, it houses the 350m² Max-Morlock-Stuben tavern. Max Morlock is Nuremberg’s most eminent football star. He became German champion with the Club in 1948 in the first post-war champions hip game against Kaiserslautern. Technology and building control technology Separate utility supply lines and emergency power generators ensure a fail-safe power supply for the stadium. All heating systems are connected to the equipment in the adjacent Stadionbad for ecological and economic reasons. The new building technology and management control room was erected in the south-west end of the stadium. Honeywell technology based on the worldwide BACnet standard provides for comfort and low operating costs in the Frankenstadion and its associated buildings. Approximately 2.500 physical data points are linked together via the open Honeywell Enterprise Buildings Integrator™ (EBI) platform. Honeywell EBI can fulfil life safety management tasks as well as building automation and energy management. It can also be upgraded to integrate security management functions. This includes access control, video surveillance, fire and intruder alarm technology as well as people and asset tracking/management and Intercom. The main demand on the installed building monitoring system at the Ludwig-Maximilian-University in Munich is the possibility of communication between automation stations of different manufacturers. 10 BACnet Europe Journal 3 01/06 060104_bacnet_journal_3.indd 10 05.01.2006 10:37:55 Anwendungen Solutions Offenes Gebäudemanagement der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München über BACnet und TCP/IP Open Building Management in the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich over BACnet and TCP/IP In 2001, Neuberger received the order from the planning department and building control office of the University of Munich to establish a central building monitoring system for the area of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. At the same time, the MSRtechnology was redeveloped and switched via BACnet to the central monitoring system for observation, archiving and visualisation. For the most part, PMC automation stations with native BACnet from Neuberger are in use. Another BMS main focus has been added through the redevelopment of the installations in the preclinic area of the LMU. The building management system ProGrafNT with BACnet/IP has been realized by Neuberger, too. In the University’s area in Großhadern, Neuberger was charged to establish a central building monitoring system. Open communication demanded The main demand on the installed building monitoring system is the possibility of communication between automation stations of different manufacturers. This was successfully realized because of the specifications in the BACnet-standard. The further demands include the visualisation of the installations as well as the archiving of measured values, fault and operation messages. The possibility to bring together data of decentralized subprojects to a central management server was also required. From network concept to CAFM integration In cooperation with the network operators from the Leibniz Data Centre a futureorientated network concept was realized that provides the opportunity for any enlargement of the system. For example, it is possible to bring together the three management servers to a supervisory management level. In areas of the University that have their own competences, a separate building monitoring computer with BACnet-automation stations is installed. The communication between this building monitoring computer and the management server occurs via a secure Internet connection. In case of disconnection, data from the building monitoring level won’t be lost. For transmission of faultmessages to the operational staff, the existing radio paging station of the LMU is used. An interface facilitates the handing over of alarm re ports depending on priorities. Outside of working hours, the alarm reports are sent to the emergency service via short text message service. The use of BMS operator’s panels (Clients) enables the operator to observe, operate and optimize all installations in his field of responsibility. The connection of these Clients is realized via the existing internet connections. In addition, it is possible to establish a connection to the management server with a service-laptop at any automation station. All measured values and alarms, fault and eventmessa- ges occurring in the monitoring system are saved in history data banks and analyzed. Utilization times are graphically and clearly entered in the monitoring and management level for all systems. The communication with a CAFM system is planned via OPC, data base interface. The Eurohypo building is a milestone in the development of open systems. This new kind of plant operation offers opportunities for building management. In the meantime 22 estates have been equipped with 30,000 data points. Kieback&Peter laid the foundation for open building automation system at Rostock University. “Tradition and Innovation” – that was the guiding idea for Rostock University to connect its 600 years of history with future-oriented education. Founded in 1419, Rostock University is the oldest university in the Baltic Sea area. 262 estate buildings are spread within a radius of 15 kilometers. In the beginning these buildings were decentrally organized. In order to increase the efficiency of the various building automation systems, the university management chose a centralized control technology based on BACnet. Existing and new systems were to be centrally monitored and controlled and expansions carried out as smoothly as possible. Kieback&Peter laid the foundation for the open building automation system. The existing building control system, Photon GLT, was rebuilt and enhanced with a BACnet interface. The control technology was modernized and expanded in several steps. Through integration into the university’s data network, it is now possible to monitor and control the system via TCP/IP from any PC. Thanks to BACnet, all systems were integrated and connected to the superordinate control system. Meanwhile 22 estates have been integrated with 30,000 nodes. Integrating the various systems into one building automation system has made operation more reliable and efficient. They can be easily controlled, optimized and monitored around the clock from a single work-station. The central GLT work station is located in the University’s operational reporting office. The existing homogenous system was connected with the new heterogeneous system to a superordinate complete system. The new Neutrino-GLT building management system is multitalented and provides, in addition to communication via BACnet, a LON-interface which enables the integration of LON-systems. With two new departments – biology and chemistry – the new generation of building automation 2001 moved into the University’s Institute building. The installed DDC4000-system communicates via native BACnet and provides, together with the Neutrino GLT building management system, a reliable unity. The University’s new library is also integrated via BACnet. Here, the DDC technology provides optimal use of geothermal energy. Automatic control of the geothermal system ensures that the library’s rooms are economically heated in an environmentally friendly way. In addition, the system provides cold water for the building’s cooling system during the summer months. The University of Rostock made a strategic decision for openness and flexibility by enhancing the building management system with the BACnet-Standard with the highest possible homogeneity at the management level. By using BACnet components from Kieback&Peter and integrating various standards, the expectations of this ambitious project were fulfilled. Hans Symanczik, is a member of the Advisory Board of BIG-EU and Director of Product and Marketing Management for Kieback&Peter GmbH & Co. KG in Berlin. sind Sonderabsprachen zwischen Server und Client notwendig. Where do the differences lie, and what do BACnet and OPC have in common with information representation on management and visualisation systems? The BACnet protocol was developed particularly for building automation and conforms to the international standard ISO 16484-5. It is based on objects, services and transmission paths, which are summarized in the BACnet standard. It is not tied to any special hardware or operating system. As a transmission path one can choose several of the paths contained in the standard - for example BACnet over IP - or even PTP (Point to Point protocol) connections by modem. Thus BACnet differs from protocols, which assume an existing connection to other communication partners exists, or which cannot be transmitted by modem (serial data line). Data communication over PTP is the unique characteristic of BACnet. BACnet can communicate the information stored in objects independently of the producer and the system. Even utilization periods are explicitly considered in the BACnet protocol. This requirement is not fulfi lled by most protocols, or is only possible via complex auxiliary solutions. BACnet however can transfer utilization periods and yearly data points such as holiday periods. OPC has the rudiments to create a generally valid interface for the visualization of information. This is based on the Microsoft operating system and the therein contained DCOM architecture for distributed communication within a Microsoft based network. As many OPC servers as desired can represent information on as many OPC clients as is required. Client and servers are located thereby either one or on different PC’s within a network. Since a fi xed network connection is presupposed, OPC connections cannot directly connect by modem. BACnet Europe Journal 3 01/06 19 060104_BACnet_Insight_J3.indd 19 05.01.2006 10:42:46 BACnet insight The establishment and disconnecting of a connection are not defi ned in the OPC specification. Therefore different systems supply an OPC server in each case e.g. the monitoring system and SPS applications of different manufacturers, which illustrates the manufacturer-specific format of the data communication in accordance with the OPC specification. Losses of information can occur during the mapping of information depending upon complexity. OPC servers are in principle software gateways, which convert a manufacturerspecific protocol into the OPC specification. This protocol must be advanced over its lines to the appropriate PC. The OPC protocol is actually transferable only within the computer network. An OPC Client reformats the information, which it receives into the structure of the visualization system in accordance with the OP specification. A software gateway is also required here. The information content of the OPC specification is limited however. If the visualisation system has further possibilities this can lead to limitations. The transmission of utilization periods is not intended in the OPC specification. In order to transmit utilization periods, special arrangements between server and client are necessary. The OPC standard is extended quasi individually by free application programming. Some providers offer both OPC servers and clients for BACnet. An OPC server runs in parallel with a BACnet server, e.g. an automatic controller. The BACnet information of the equipment is converted into the OPC specification. Appropriate planning effort is necessary, depending upon the complexity and quality of the BACnet equipment and the BACnet OPC server. Since all information of the BACnet standard cannot be converted to OPC, additional arrangements between OPC servers and OPC Client is necessary with the associated expense. In no case are BACnet connections native BACnet connections in relation to OPC. The OPC software gateway can limit the functionalities of communication. Visualization systems, which work as a BACnet client, can switch an OPC client in parallel. These receive the information from arbitrary OPC servers and make it available to the BACnet client. It therefore behaves like a BACnet server in relation to the BACnet client. OPC and BACnet are being further developed, e.g. toward an OPC standard over XML, which is independent of the operating system. Also function extensions for special applications such as utilization period transmission are being discussed. Appropriate extensions of the specification are to be expected in the future. BACnet is a special solution for building automation, and OPC must be adapted to this concrete application. BACnet and OPC can be used separately or also together in projects. Der Kommunikationsweg, um an eine gewünschte Information zu gelangen, wird in der Zukunft also so aussehen: <?xml version=”1.0” standalone=”yes” encoding=”UTF-8”?> <weather_service> <title>Actual weather information</title> <entry> <town>Krefeld</town> <temperature>24,7</temperature> <conditions>cloudy</conditions> <date>27.06.2005</date> <time>12:24:54</time> </entry> <entry> <town>Offenbach</town> <temperature>28,1</temperature> <conditions>sunny</conditions> <date>27.06.2005</date> <time>12:25:39</time> </entry> </weather_service> Aktuelle Wetterdaten, mit XML abgefragt To bridge the gap Despite the wide spread of open standards in building automation systems the problem of transferring data from the field level (factory floor) to back office systems, that means administrative or commercial systems, still remains. Today, these interfaces often require media leaps, which prevents using building automation data within commercial decisions. This ends up in permanent repairs and maintenance, even if holistic analysis of repair and investment costs would advise a new acquisition. In contrast, transferring events from the building automation to back office systems would, for example, allow automatic ordering of spare parts.Today’s Facility Managers often demand automatic data acquisition of energy data as well as flexible assignment to lodgers. Staff members in schools or universities want to acquire rooms using office tools like MSOutlook (Email-Client), implicitly setting up the room temperatures. With this even at evening events the rooms are neither too cold nor too warm, just because some verbal or telephonic information to the facility manager was missing. A further requirement could be comprehension of weather forecasts to save energy or to advance the comfort. If, for example the weather forecast reports a windless, sunny day, the flow temperature of the zone control for the southern part of the building may be reduced. Putting it all together the market challenges the use of building automation services from everywhere at any time at any place. And all this independent of platforms, programming languages or operating systems. To fit these requirements, today expensive special solutions may be individually programmed and must be costly maintained in the lifecycle further on. These solutions may fit some requirements but may not be used outside a limited range of applications those solutions are designed for. Due to this it is profitable to look out of the box of building automation and learn from the IT industry. Web services – An overview Whenever we book a flight over the internet or wire money electronically, we use web pages provided by web servers. We use a web browser to access data and services provided using web pages. This leads us to the real problem. Users of web pages are humans, not machines or applications. As well, in building automation more and more automation devices are equipped with builtin (embedded) web servers and provide a comfortable, browser based user interface. The next level in the evolution of IT technology are web services. Web services allow access to data and services from machine to machine or between applications. This allows interoperability far beyond from platforms, operating systems or application and infrastructure limits. Just to remember: When BACnet became an American national standard in 1995, the communication with BACnet for the first time allowed a common platform for a wide spread interoperability between devices and systems, even from different vendors, including complex data structures like Calendar or Schedule objects but still limited to building automation applications or for security systems. Data exchange to back office applications like accounting programs or to software for floor space utilization using MS Office or Linux were still not defined nor standardized with BACnet. Web services are in fact functional modules which allow integration of data and services from other parties in own applications. To allow usage of web services from other applications (clients) without permanent customization with the risk of additional costs, at first certain conditions must be met. This is not a new conclusion and we know this from BACnet. Only the standardization of objects and services allows interoperability with BACnet. Due to the platform, hardware and operating system independent usage of web services a standardized and world-wide accepted format to describe the contents and meaning of this data is required. Web services are based on XML, which is an independent description language for any kind of human or machine readable data. Advantages of Web services Web services provide many advantages like usage of TCP/IP (the Internet protocol) to realize data exchange. Based on IP, HTTP is used as the common transport layer. The applications and web services itself are described its the standardized language WSDL (Web Service Description Language). Not only the description but also the whole exchange of messages is based on XML. Web services may describe it’s capabilities in terms of a self description. Humans or machines may read and use the description without the need of further information. This prevents expensive extensions or consultation. The self description contains information of supported requests and responses. For this, SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) is used as the common protocol. RPC’s (Remote Procedure Calls) may be used to initiate a function call on a remote system. Due to the consequent use of widely approved standards no proprietary extensions nor infrastructures are required. Web services may be used on different BACnet Europe Journal 3 01/06 23 060104_BACnet_Insight_J3.indd 23 05.01.2006 10:42:59 BACnet insight Glossary Web services IP: Internet Protocol The Internet Protocol realizes addressing in networks and in the World Wide Web. Each system within the network or internet requires a unique address, the IP address. The actual standard uses 4 Byte IP addresses. For the future the standard was enhanced to allow a wider range of addressing (IPv6). TCP: Transmission Control Protocol This protocol is the lowest common denominator of the data traffic in the internet. For transmission over the internet, telegrams may be cut into small packets. TCP assures transmission control and reassembles the packets in the correct order after reception. HTTP: Hyper Text Transfer Protocol This protocol is used by clients e.g. web browsers to retrieve information from a web server. HTTP is a strict question and answer game, where the server only responds to requests from clients but will never inform clients unsolicited. XML: eXtensible Markup Language A simple, but highly flexible text format to transport structured data. XML was designed to describe data and to focus on what data is, and is particularly suitable for machine to machine communication. The future way to access information will be as follows: Search a UDDI to find a WSDL, which provides the designated information, then wrapping the Web services request in SOAP so it would slide through the HTTP to retrieve an XML file, all transported over TCP/IP. <?xml version=”1.0” standalone=”yes” encoding=”UTF-8”?> <weather_service> <title>Actual weather information</title> <entry> <town>Krefeld</town> <temperature>24,7</temperature> <conditions>cloudy</conditions> <date>27.06.2005</date> <time>12:24:54</time> </entry> <entry> <town>Offenbach</town> <temperature>28,1</temperature> <conditions>sunny</conditions> <date>27.06.2005</date> <time>12:25:39</time> </entry> </weather_service> XML data sample to provide weather conditions HTML: Hyper Text Markup Language A simple text format for presentation of data e.g. on web pages. HTML was designed to display data and to focus on how data looks and is particularly suitable for human to machine communication. RPC: Remote Procedure Call Allows execution of functions on remote systems over networks or the internet. SOAP: Simple Object Access Protocol A protocol to exchange data and RPCs between systems over a network or the Internet. WSDL: Web services Description Language A protocol-, programming language- and platform independent XML standard to describe network services. UDDI: Universal Description, Discovery and Integration A dictionary for web services which are provided using SOAP. systems regardless which programming language, platform or operating system was used to provide those web services or are in use at the client side.Web services provide access from back office systems even to any proprietary protocols. BACnet Web Services Interface Specification Within the ASHRAE Standing Standard Project Committee SSPC 135, which also maintains the BACnet standard (ANSI/ ASHRAE 135-2004), the working group XML specifies definition for web services for building automation. Two addenda based on the actual standard 135-2004 were defined by this group and presented as a public review. Part 1 (135-2004c) Annex N: “Adding BACnet/WS Web Services Interface” describes the basic web services interface which may not only be used by BACnet, but is in general capable of handling data from building automation protocols, e.g. KNX, LON, Modbus, etc. or even proprietary protocols. For this, general definitions to retrieve actual values, schedule programs or trend log, etc. were taken by the two simple functions getValue() and setValue(). Part 1 also defines national characteristics and allows conversion of time format or date and time format. A BACnet/WS web server may also provide different languages at once, important for multi language countries like Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, etc. Part 2 (135-2004c) Annex H: “Combining BACnet Networks with non-BACnet Networks” defines the mapping of information from BACnet objects and services to web services. Outlook Web services may be used in those cases where data is to be transferred between different levels or areas, from technically oriented applications to business oriented applications. As for open standards like BACnet, LON or KNX, which realized interoperability between systems of different manufacturers in building automation and even in security technology years before, web services will allow integration of data from building automation or other application areas to back office systems in the near future. And all this at any time at any place! Already today interesting web services are provided, which may be useful for building automation applications like weather services or forecasts and e.g. spare part order services. Manufacturers of devices and systems for building automation are now called to provide value added services, protocols, reports for usage in other applications. This allows a much better cost effectiveness for facility management, lowers costs and increases comfort for the user of building automation systems. 24 BACnet Europe Journal 3 01/06 060104_BACnet_Insight_J3.indd 24 05.01.2006 10:43:00 Durchgehend geöffnet Honeywell Excel Web ® ■■ www ■■ Linux Offene, zukunftssichere Technologien bieten erhebliches Einsparpotential sowie maximalen Investitionsschutz. Swan about bridging building automation with other application systems. The interview was conducted by Frank Schubert. What was the initial intention of setting up an open standard? Steve: Eine Arbeitsgruppe arbeitet bereits an Zutrittskontrollsystemen. Steve: Consumers were frustrated by being forced to return to the same supplier where they bought their current generation of equipment. They were looking for more flexibility in choosing products based on price and performance. Mike: For example if you had systems from two manufacturers you needed two different workstations. That didn’t provide any value. Steve: Using the open standard allowed HVAC controls to be connected with fire-alarm systems or even lighting applications. You can realize other kinds of integration as well. In Europe BACnet is mostly used for HVAC applications and for integrations, so-called nonnative gateways are used to connect to other systems. Bill: This is an ongoing process. 10 years ago I saw that companies 26 BACnet Europe Journal 3 01/06 060104_BACnet_Insight_J3.indd 26 05.01.2006 10:43:03 BACnet insight were building gateways from their proprietary protocols to BACnet. BACnet was just the point of integration. Several companies realized that there was an opportunity to provide customers with what they really wanted. Companies who ignored this had to stand by as customer satisfaction started to increase. Steve: I can confirm this. We started with the fire alarm sector as the first external industry we wanted to bring into BACnet. The proposals of a European company from this sector were incorporated into the standard. Bill: So we are on the way to bringing in these and other organizations and to seeing whether we can incorporate their interests. This will enable them to provide native BACnet capabilities. How important are tested and certified and /or listed products? Bill: BACnet offers a lot of optionality and one of the things that the BACnet testing labs have done is to work out what is needed for the devices to function together. The important issue is to ensure that all the devices comply with the BACnet standard. So we check whether the device really speaks BACnet. Otherwise, if a device doesn’t function, you would need to call a BACnet expert with the right tools. The lab verifies that tested devices are conform to the BACnet standard. So that means BACnet is more or less a platform with various options, the specifiers or integrators still need to make choices. Do you see a need to extend the device profiles in terms of the supported network layers and objects which are not yet part of the device profiles? Bill: The reason why there are different networking technologies is that we wanted to span a range of cost or price and performance. Mike: It does not make sense to connect a couple of fire-sensors over a fiber-optic 100Mbit/s connection. Bill: The object types supported need to be driven by the applications. But on the other hand we felt that there is a sort of a commonality in what people deal with, such as a building controller or an application specific controller. And those requirements were already included in the annexes K and L (BACnet BIBBs and Device Profiles). They tell you which kind of capabilities should be implemented for trend logging, scheduling, alarming and so on. Steve: We wanted to give the specifiers a framework to understand what is needed for the job. But the standard is flexible enough to allow the functionality for a certain sort of device. Bill: The actual list of profiles is not the complete set of profiles forever. For example there is a current proposal from Europe to describe the requirements of European devices such that they better suit the European market (B-BAS profile). In Europe most of the specifiers choose the B-BC profile even though a B-AAC or even B-ASC would be enough to do the same job. Mike: That’s the reason why I wish to see people specifying functionality that they shouldn’t worry too much about what profiles the devices comply with. Steve: BACnet cannot be taken in isolation within these specifications; it has to be seen in the context of the functionality to be achieved. Mike: This is a kind of performance specification, if I wanted to buy a car, I could do so by specifying the horsepower, the number of cylinders of the motor and so on, or I can say: I want to go from 0-100 km/h within less than 6 seconds, so give me a car that fits this job. And this could be the same way with building controls. I want to be able to change the schedule, I want to be informed by alarms under certain circumstances and so on. And I want to use BACnet to have the flexibility to add equipment later on. For which application fields do you see BACnet in the future? Steve: Access control systems may be one of the next application fields, we are already working on that. Bill: CCTV (Video) in security applications. Mike: It’s just the general integration of BACnet to other enterprise levels, e.g. room scheduling systems, maintenance management and so on using web services. Harry Crijns, Konnex Association Marketing Manager in Brussels, is member of the BIG-EU “S-mode” (System), “E-mode” (Easy), “A-mode” (Automatic). Binary Input, Binary Output, Binary Value, Analogue Input, Analogue Output, Analogue Value. Today no manufacturer can deny the open standards, simply because no manufacturer is capable to cover in an economical way all application fields in a building automation and control network. The requirements of the professional user at the management level are simple; access to and visualisation of all applications in the building or on the estate. The reason why the BACnet standard was developed. At the other side of the total network, the fieldbus level, we have the same trend; open and transparent communication between decentralised devices, mainly actuators and sensors. Apart from this technical requirement the price sensitivity is rather high due to the fact that at this level many devices will be installed and have to be configured; so simple intelligent and easy configurable devices are a MUST to be successful. These main specifications are the starting point of the KNX standard, approved as EN 50090 by CENELEC and CEN, it delivers means and tools to develop devices which can fulfi l these requirements. Therefore the KNX standard limits itself in functionalities and the method of communication. In other words the objective of the KNX standard is to cover all applications at the fieldbus level only. This includes all information about the functional and eventually alarm status should be offered in an open transparent way to the dedicated system developed to manage these flows of information the system who is capable for that is no doubt BACnet. Different levels in Building Control The major advantages of the KNX standard as a fieldbus are interoperability, product quality and manufacture independent functionalities. Each manufacturer can make a choice between 3 different configuration modes and the communication media: “S-mode” (System mode), “E-mode” (Easy mode), “A-mode” (Automatic mode). Apart from these 3 configuration modes, the KNX standard describes several communication media. Each communication medium can be used in combination with one or more configuration modes, which allows each manufacturer to choose the right combination for the market segment and application. Twisted pair in 2 different versions. Powerline communication also in 2 different versions. Radio frequency for wireless communication. The KNX network can be divided into many sub-systems each handled by an installer. The installer can configure and handover his part of the network independently from his colleagues. In building networks a fieldbus network is the basis of a building management system and it is here and the advantages of the BACnet standard, came to fore: to manage all these data in such a way that the targets, for example, minimising the energy use at the same temperature comfort level or to guaranteeing fi re protection when the building is fully occupied and above all visualising the status of the building in such a way that it stays comprehensive for the user. Standardised mapping Representatives of BACnet and Konnex Association therefore decided that a standardised mapping from both Standards on Management level and fieldbus level will strengthen both standards and will make the decision for the specifier much easier to chose the combination BACnet and KNX as his preferred communication standards in his building management and controls systems. The result of this cooperation resulted in annex H.5 of the BACnet standard; “Using BACnet with KNX” In this annex the necessary KNX functional blocks are described, not only the semantics of a function in the English language, but also how to defi ne the access of the services associated with that function. This is done on the basis of “datapoints.” A datapoint is divided into two principal categories, input and output. A functional block consists of least one datapoint. Functional blocks are contained within each physical Device. Each physical device implements at least one functional block. On the other hand BACnet’s object types defi ne functions in terms of semantics and the services used to access these functions. To accomplish this task, BACnet object types contain properties. A BACnet object type consists of a at least one property which may be mandatory but there are others which may be optional. The BACnet standard also defi nes device objects. Such a “BACnet device” contains a collection of instances of object types. Each BACnet device contains one, and only one device object. The basis for the relationship between KNX and BACnet is that the KNX functional blocks are comparable to BACnet object types while KNX datapoints correlate to BACnet properties. Mapping KNX to BACnet; principal approach In the annex H.5 of the BACnet standard; “Using BACnet with KNX” the mapping of six specific KNX functional blocks to BACnet object types are described: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Binary Input, Binary Output, Binary Value, Analogue Input, Analogue Output, Analogue Value. The KNX functional blocks and the BACnet object types have identical semantics in their data the structure so that the required properties can be mapped. Due to this annex of the BACnet standard, it is possible to define standardised low-cost interfaces to connect both strong open standards, BACnet and KNX, in order to create an irresistible offer for a total building control system. SCADA-Systems often use the OPC standard, in building automation BACnet is very common. How do you to connect between these two standards? In process control as well as in building automation numerous installations use so-called SCADA-Systems. SCADA stands for “Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition”, as the name indicates SCADA systems are designated for supervisory tasks like visualization. For data communication to automation devices these systems often use the OPC-standard Data Access (OPC=OLE for Process Control). This standard is based on structures and mechanisms of Microsofts’ Windows operating system. At the automation level of building automation BACnet (ISO 16484-5) is often used as the communication standard. To easily connect the two standards BACnet and OPC MBS GmbH from Krefeld, Germany provides two software products. Connecting BACnet devices to OPC The software “BACnet (Client) OPC-Server” provides an easy way to connect data from BACnet devices to OPC based SCADA-Systems. Therefore an image of all connected BACnet devices is provided at runtime. On demand the software automatically scans the connected BACnet network and provides data from BACnet devices acting as an OPCServer. Using OPC as the data source for BACnet management systems The Software “BACnet (Server) OPC-Client” enables the connections from OPC servers to BACnet systems e.g. management stations. The software manages BACnet objects which represent data from one or more connected OPC servers. Both products work as pure software running on Microsoft Windows as the operating system platform. Extensive configuration options allow customization and optimization of the communication even with larger quantities of data points. A built-in monitor mode allows visual control of data and write access to object properties. As a special highlight both products are equipped with extensive import and export functions including the data format EDE-File (EDE=Engineering Data Exchange) which is recommended by the BIG-EU for offline data exchange in BACnet networks. Fully functional free of charge demo versions of both products can be downloaded from the manufacturer ´s web pages. Over 150 users, planners and manufacturers of building automation systems and components exchanged ideas and experiences at the first BACnet Forum since the ISO standardization. BACnet pioneer H. Michael Newman about the success story of the BACnet protocol. ist. Prof. Peter Fischer, Sprecher des BIG-EU Beirats resümierte am Ende: „Das BACnet Forum hat Anwender, Planer und Hersteller zusammengebracht – ein Fortschritt für uns alle.“ 36 BACnet Europe Journal 3 01/06 060104_bacnet_journal_3.indd 36 05.01.2006 10:39:15 BACnet Interest Group Europe BACnet is leading the way – in Germany, Europe and around the world. That was the conclusion of the BACnet Forum which took place on 8th and 9th September 2005 in Berlin – the first user forum of the BACnet Interest Group Europe (BIG-EU) since the incorporation of BACnet into the ISO catalogue. At the forum it became clear that BACnet is becoming an ever more important factor for success in the design of efficient building automation systems. The BIG-EU invited users to Berlin on the tenth anniversary of the BACnet standard. Safety questions and IT management were on the program together with optimizing costs and tips on preparing tenders for open systems. 14 companies presented their BACnet solutions at the accompanying exhibition. The BACnet forum covered the protocol’s successful history, the added value for real estate, the successful implementation of BACnet solutions and much more. Hardly any question was left unanswered: the advantages of BACnet compared with other communications protocols, the importance of BACnet for the European guidelines on energy efficiency and networking with operational IT applications Nils Meinert, president of the BIG-EU, regards the crossmanufacturer communication standard as a new market quality: “with our certification of BACnet conformity, the interoperability workshops for cross-manufacturer Über 150 Teilnehmer besuchten das BACnet Forum in der Urania Berlin. The BACnet Forum at the Urania Berlin had more than 150 participants. device testing and the increasing number of members, the use of BACnet in Europe is proceeding apace.” The biggest advantage of BACnet is that the standard is oriented towards the needs of building automation. H. Michael Newman, the American BACnet pioneer and founding chairman of the standardization committee, emphasizes indispensable functions such as the operating calendar, time program, trend data and alarms which are established features of the BACnet norm. The second biggest advantage is that BACnet is hardware independent. In addition, as an open standard, BACnet is license-free and free of charge. Newman estimates that 15,000 BACnet systems are in operation in 82 countries around the world. Of these, 6,000 are multi-vendor systems – the show piece of BACnet. Auf der Ausstellung präsentieren 14 Unternehmen ihre BACnet-Produkte. At the exhibition 14 companies presented thier BACnet products. Integration planner, Achim Heidemann, sees building automation with BACnet as being at the beginning of becoming a holistic organization, which in the industrial sector it already has been for a long time: “with BACnet you can start planning across all assembly sections”. The big advantage is that information is continuously available. This enables easy optimization of the building systems, in particular with respect to cost, usability and sustainability. Planners as well as manufacturers are increasingly demanding an automated test to certify conformity to the BACnet standard. Vice President, Hans-Werner Koch, thinks that labeling successfully tested BACnet devices will be a criterion for meeting the European guidelines on energy efficiency: “The BTL logo, which we have been awarding since 2004, will be used to prove manufacturer independent communication”. René Quirighetti, speaker of the BIG-EU technical group, thinks that an automated test is not far away. The BIG-EU is developing a testing procedure that will be available by the end of 2006. Prof. Peter Fischer, spokesman of the BIG-EU Advisory Board summarized: “the BACnet Forum brought together users, planners and manufacturers – a step forward for all of us”. I was fortunate to be a participant in the BIG-EU‘s second Plugfest, which was held May 9.-11.2005 at WSPLab in Stuttgart. 16 companies sent representatives from Australia, North America and Europe to the workshop, bringing BACnet devices to be tested. The number of companies participating is a big increase from the first BIG-EU workshop, and if this increase were to continue the next would be the largest ever, anywhere. The Plugfest saves time and effort in development. 38 BACnet Europe Journal 3 01/06 060104_bacnet_journal_3.indd 38 05.01.2006 10:39:31 BACnet Interest Group Europe William O. Swan berichtet als Teilnehmer über das 2. BIG-EU Plugfest im Mai 2005. William O. Swan reports of the 2nd BIG-EU Plugfest in May 2005. The goal of these workshops is to ensure interoperability between BACnet devices in the field by running them through their paces together in the lab. This workshop was organized into 10 two-hour sessions, with different pairings of companies for each session. The workshop organizers chose these pairings beforehand by applying factors such as matching complementary functions and capabilities of the paired devices. arduous, the participants were pleased with the results. They recognized the costs of even small problems when they show up in actual installations, and to be able to identify and correct them here was of great benefit. “Already in our first ten minutes this was worth it,” said Cristóbal Fernández (Fr. Sauter) after the first session, “it saved us two days in the field.” Something new in this workshop were the companies bringing BACnet devices that had not completed development. Work on one implementation had begun only two months earlier. These companies saw that these workshops were not only an opportunity to test completed implementations, but they are a chance to learn what is needed to be interoperable before investing a lot of time and effort in development. As always in these workshops it is interesting to watch new participants. When they arrive on the first day they are reserved – after all, the teams they are testing with are often their competitors in the marketplace. But it rarely takes long for them to acquire the spirit of cooperation that pervades these workshops. After all, if their BACnet devices don’t interoperate, everybody loses. Finally, the organization of this workshop was first rate, from the difficult job of optimizing the pairings down to the little things such as supplying hubs and outlet strips to facilitate quicker moves between sessions. Speaking as one who has been attending such workshops for many years now, in Europe and North America, this was the best organized I have seen yet. BIG-EU and WSPLab have set a new standard for BACnet interoperability workshops. William O. Swan, Vorsitzender des BACnet Ausschusses (SSPC 135) Chairman of the BACnet Committee (SSPC 135) Internationale Konferenz - International Conference The testers brought a high level of dedication to the workshop, though at one point that dedication caused organizer Frank Bitter a little difficulty. “At the end of the session they did not want to stop,” he said of one pair of testers, “they wanted to keep testing.” By the end of the workshop companies were arranging follow-up testing on their own. The degree of sophistication of the (mostly European) BACnet implementations has increased immensely since the first workshop. Although many of these BACnet implementations were begun later than their North American counterparts, I would say the degree of sophistication today is comparable. Much more time in this workshop was spent testing the arcane aspects of BACnet. For all that the days were long and the sessions often Bei einer internationalen Konferenz der BACnet Interest Group Europe im Mai 2005 kamen Mitglieder und Partner aus sieben europäischen Ländern in Schönaich zusammen, um gemeinsame Ziele abzustimmen. Members and partners of the BACnet Interest Group Europe from seven European countries met to agree on common goals at an international conference in May 2005 at Schönaich, Germany. At the end of the conference it was clear that the presence of BACnet in Europe is set to increase and will be supported by the national BACnet groups and co-ordinated by BIG-EU. Many building owners want open building automation based on BACnet. Volkmar Klose from the engineering company Theurich+Klose in Hannover, Germany, explains how he implements BACnet technology reasonably and efficiently, using his experience. Was sind Ihre Erfahrungen? Herr Klose, vielen Dank. Das Interview führte Axel Schlarb. 40 BACnet Europe Journal 3 01/06 060104_bacnet_journal_3.indd 40 05.01.2006 10:39:50 BACnet Interest Group Europe Volkmar Klose, Geschäftsführer der THEURICH+KLOSE Ingenieur-Gesellschaft fand über FND (Firmenneutrales Datenübertragungssystem) zu BACnet: „BACnet verursacht keinen höheren Planungsaufwand, aber Einsparungen in späteren Betriebsphasen.“ The chair man of the engineering company Theurich+Klose, Germany, Volkmar Klose, came to BACnet via FND: “BACnet brings no higher planning effort, but savings in operation.” How can planning engineers become familiar with BACnet? Klose: Two things are important: Firstly, experience in planning open, non-proprietary systems and in dealing with invitations to tender. This wealth of experience demands a personal effort, sometimes accompanied by setbacks. And, at times, experience can only be made by suffering, so to say. Secondly, a profound BACnet background is required, combined with practical implementation in building automation. Together with the client, the planning engineer needs to defi ne the required functions at an early stage. With a view to the economy of the project, not “everything that is feasible” should be demanded. In principle, practically every person fully familiar with the BACnet Manual and having in-depth EDP knowledge can plan and constructa BACnet plant. What are your experiences? Klose: Many things that can be taken for granted in homogeneous systems require specific planning efforts in open systems, for example time programs or switching priorities. The large proportion of BACnet products with the BTL logo that are already on the market can be viewed as a positive aspect. Inspite of interoperability building owners complain about the different languages used by vendors. Klose: BACnet requires implementation in a consistent and holistic manner, and it must be matched to the degrees of freedom required by the specific project. It is not sufficient to write a tender specification for a building automation and control system as an open system based on BACnet. Important is the clear description of functions. The HVAC industry has accepted and implemented BACnet in a relatively short period of time. What is the situation in other industrial sectors? Klose: Other sectors also welcome BACnet, for example the fi re and intrusion alarm industry. However, legal clarifications are still needed here. This includes warranty issues and approval by VdS and TÜV, for instance. Building owners and the trade consider BACnet expensive. Klose: Compared to homogeneous systems, the fi rst step toward BACnet is more expensive, but savings will be achieved in operation. How do you view the future of BACnet? Klose: Authorities are very interested because BACnet ensures fair competition. In the case of plant extensions, different makes of automation products can be used. In the meantime, the industry has become aware of the benefits offered by BACnet, affording costsaving concepts for distributed premises with quickly changing usage. What about the effort required for planning? Klose: For an experienced planning engineer, the planning effort remains pretty much the same. Are the planning and commissioning tools provided by the different vendors adequate? Klose: I think that a number of improvements should be made, aimed at simplifying planning and commissioning work, thereby lowering costs. Are IT and BACnet compatible? Klose: IT networks and Web technology very much support BACnet applications. Our tender specifications give full consideration to this fact. Do open systems encourage clients to use a larger number of brands? Klose: We recommend using a maximum of three to five different brands (in the case of larger premises). A larger number of brands does not automatically lead to more cost savings. At this stage, it is not yet possible to simply replace a native BACnet automation station by some other brand. Thank you very much, Mr. Klose. The interview was conducted by Axel Schlarb. Autor Hans R. Kranz beschreibt darin die Anwendung von BACnet nach DIN EN ISO 16484-5. The first German BACnet reference book was published under the title “BACnet Gebaeudeautomation 1.4” by Promotor Verlag (ISBN 3-922420-02-8). The author, Hans R. Kranz describes the practical application of the BACnet standard that is DIN EN ISO 16484-5. Hans R. Kranz presents the first German BACnet reference book. This first BACnet book describes BACnet Version 1, Revision 4, the recent addenda and the discussions about network services and network security. 440 pages present the functionality of technical building services, the integration of microelectronics, computer technology, and informatics. The book gives an introduction to network technologies and explains the functional relationship to LON, KNX/ EIB and the internet. It explains what BACnet can do, the benefits of interoperable systems and the application areas of BACnet. Consultants, landlords, operators, and experts on building automation and control systems will benefit from the detailed information including citations from the ISO standard, the relevant DIN-publications, from VOB (German construction contract procedures) and the GAEB-STLBBau (German Master Specification). The author also makes clear that the use of new technologies such as microelectronics and IT are only an “auxiliary energy” for the controls solutions at the construction site – the operation of technical plants is still the most important factor. Investors’ interests are addressed in detail, e.g. producer independency and longterm investment protection. The author, Hans R. Kranz VDI, has occupied managerial positions with Siemens, IBM and Honeywell and is an expert on building automation and control. Today he is head of HAK-Consulting–House Automation Kranz, in Forst/ Germany, a member of the executive board of VDI-TGA, a member of the DIN Presidial Board, is active in many standardization and guideline committees, a member of the BACnet Interest Group Europe and course leader for the VDI/BIG-EU BACnet trainings as well as Honorary Consul for Europe for ABOK, the Russian Association of HVAC Engineers.
