The Members of the Jury at the aces Academy 2014 in Senec
Jeremy Barnett
Jeremy Barnett is from a very small island at the top of Scotland which is called
Shetland – where the ponies come from and where are no trees.
6 years ago, after studying Social Anthropology and Politics at Edinburgh University,
Jeremy moved to London where he joined the British Council, the UK’s international
organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations. As part of his work at
the British Council, Jeremy most recently managed SALTO Cultural Diversity, a
resource centre funded by the European Commission’s Youth in Action programme
providing youth work tools and trainings, publications and resources on Cultural
Diversity related topics such as intercultural competence, identity, religion, faith and
ethnicity. Jeremy’s current role at the British Council in London is working on a civil
society capacity building programme based in Afghanistan.
He has also spent a couple of years as trustee for Intercultural Youth Exchange (ICYE-UK), an international
volunteering charity, where he had specific responsibility for networks and partnerships.
In his spare time, when he has some, Jeremy enjoys travelling, playing sport and spending time with his
friends.
Claudia Schneider
Claudia Schneider studied European Ethnology at the University of Vienna. Since
nearly 20 years she as been working for the EfEU association (Association for the
Development of Feminist Educational and Teaching Models) which focuses on
gender and diversity in the field of education and was founded in 1986. Its aim is to
analyse teaching content, didactics, patterns of interaction, and structural
conditions. Furthermore she is also team member and co-founder of the ASD Austrian Society for Diversity (since 2004).
Claudia has been working as educational researcher and consultant in Austria,
Germany, and Luxembourg. She is author of many articles on Gender and Diversity
in Education; she provided guidelines for headmasters to implement Diversity
Management in schools on behalf of Austrian’s Ministry of Education; and e.g. in 2013 she was part of a
team mapping recommendations to open schools for diversity issues.
Additionally she is a university lecturer and teaches teachers-to-be at the University of Vienna and the
University of Applied Arts Vienna.
Jasmina Stuhli
th
Jasmina was born on December 30 , 1983 in Brčko, Bosnia and Herzegovina, but she
spent most of her life in the Salt City – Tuzla, where she currently lives.
In 2006 she graduated at the University of Tuzla, Department of English language and
literature and started working in the suburban primary school. One of her main goals,
besides successful teaching, is to improve the school environment and to use English
as a tool to help students develop social skills. Due to her constant engagement in
various extracurricular activities and many successfully organized and realized school
projects, Jasmina quickly became the youngest member of the School Board. At the
same time, she volunteered at Tuzla Orphanage and a few NGOs, primarily working on
youth and ecology projects.
Jasmina also realized two successful ACES projects, and held various workshops during several ACES
meetings. She regularly runs seminars for students and teachers on topics such as socialization, different
culture awareness, children with special needs, violence, ecology, English language teaching etc..
Furthermore she often acts as a presenter at English language (teaching) conferences and has also
published various papers on the same topic. In 2013, Jasmina earned a MA degree in English linguistics.
At the moment, Jasmina is enjoying her maternity leave with her first child.

More Council FAQs on www.aces.or.at/participation
The Council is an advisory body with consultative status within aces. It reflects the
participative principle of aces and was created to intensify the mutual exchange of
aces stakeholders and better prepare the field for decisions of the management.
The Council acts as a “bridge” between the participants (students and teachers)
and the aces management. It voices opinions, feedback, ideas, needs and
questions of teachers and students deriving from own experiences and/or collected
during aces events. This ensures their integration in the aces program development
process. The Council members also act as (peer) consultants and resource persons
for students and teachers regarding aces and the implementation of school
partnership projects. Furthermore, the Council members, as many other
participants, are important aces multipliers promoting program aims, values and
information on various levels.
The mandate of the appointed Council members lasts 2 years (in future maybe 3
years). The Council members participate in the aces events actively as dialogue
partners and resource persons: each member takes part in one Kick-Off Meeting
and one Academy alternating during the mandate. In addition, the Council gathers
with the aces management for the two-day “Council and Strategy Meeting” in
Vienna.
If you are interested in becoming a Council member and think you can contribute
with innovative ideas and valuable advice, please apply on the “Council members
wanted” pinboard at the Academy or tell one of the Council members. Because of
legal reasons students must be minimum 16 years old, and for the next mandate be
still in school at least until June 2015! The Council members are ultimately chosen
by the aces management. Council members work on a voluntary basis and get a
certificate at the end of their mandate. In order to cover direct costs for substitutes,
Council teachers get a small allowance of 30 €/meeting day.
The Council members can be approached during aces events. They are happy to
hear and forward to the aces management: direct feedback (positive/negative),
specific conditions that complicate project participation / implementation, new ideas.
Or you contact Council members via the website: www.aces.or.at/acescouncil
aces
In 2010 the aces Council was established with the aim to promote the idea of
lived participation and to shape the future development of aces together
with the aces management. By involving students and teachers of former aces
projects, a broader perspective is guaranteed as the voices and needs of the
target group can be more easily considered in the planning and development of
aces. The Council assumes an advisory role with consultative status – it
does not make decisions but can point at blind spots and give recommendations
to the aces management.
The Council: 4 students and 4 teachers from different aces countries
Council members work on a voluntary basis, are nominated by Interkulturelles
Zentrum, take part in aces events and have an individual mandate of two years
maximum. Each of them has aces project and event experiences as well as a
solid understanding of the aces program and is willing to share experiences,
knowledge and new ideas with peers and the aces management.

Student
participation
and
democratic
participation in schools are essential in
students’ and teachers’ lives. We all want the
same thing: a democratic (school) environment
that allows the participation and contribution of
all!
How do we get there? Step 1: Meet the
challenge, Step 2: Get to know it, Step 3: Find and put into practice
solutions and new ideas! Let’s “chat” about our understanding and the
(potential) meaning of student participation, and let’s find out what
YOUR role in a beautiful school democracy could be. With a variety of
methods this workshop sharpens your skills for encounters,
communication and cooperation on a more equal footing, for divergent
and convergent thinking. It helps you to face your everyday challenges
regarding “having your say”, hearing opinions and taking actively part in
processes, and much more importantly, it might help you to figure out the
best solution for your problem. So, Step 4: Smile and allow thinking out
of the box, I mean school!
Student Participation
Ever heard about the “Council”-method?
In this workshop you will get the
opportunity to learn more about Council
and how students and teachers can
apply it in schools.
The intention of Council is a nonjudgemental type of communication that
creates and promotes a good and open
atmosphere between dialogue partners. The focus is more on
listening than on speaking skills. Empowering and applying these
skills leads to trustful and authentic communication, creating the base
for joyful and sustainable learning. It also has the potential to heal
learned blockages. So let’s learn the rules of Council and experience
its balancing effect. Join us to experience the magic!

Adolescence is a time of transition, of
reorientation and becoming independent.
When children become adolescents, they need a
safe space in which they can experience their
strength, their courage, their limitations and their
weaknesses. In contrast to children, youngsters
start to reflect on their actions, they question
society, parental home and school to find their
own position. Becoming aware of oneself leads to
self-confidence and helps to stand up for oneself
and to hold one’s ground.
Young people need parents, teachers and adult friends that “see” them
and accept them as they are, who back them and support them to follow
their own path.
In this workshop we will talk about our experiences with kids in puberty
(and maybe our own transition phases) and we will try out some
exercises to get a deeper understanding about initiation in times of inner
change.
Innovative Learning
“What would you do if you had a great idea for
a mobile app? Would you tell anybody? Or
would you be afraid that someone else might
run away with your idea and create the mobile
app by himself in secret? Although many
people would say that secrecy is important,
we know that the most successful innovators
in the world are constantly talking to other
people. Silicon Valley, Berlin and Stockholm stand for innovation and
have one thing in common: a culture of creativity and sharing. Some of
the world’s most interesting companies and universities have started to
work with something called design thinking: a way to find creative
solutions for some of the biggest challenges in the world. In this
workshop we will teach you how to use design thinking to find solutions
for problems. Together, we will develop concepts for mobile apps that
solve real life problems. That means we have to think like pirates: Never
afraid to challenge existing ideas and to explore new seas. After all, as
the late Steve Jobs once rightly pointed out, ‘It is more fun to be a pirate
than to join the navy.’

Every day we use 21 century tools whenever we
want to communicate, to find information, etc. But
do we also use 21st century tools in Education?
Everybody has an account at the most popular
social network. Everybody knows how to chat,
how to buy or sell something on the Internet, how
to write an email… But do you really know how to
successfully collaborate with others? When I say
“collaboration", I'm not just talking about sharing
presentations or videos. For me, the real collaboration is working
together to achieve a pre-established goal. What happens if your project
partner lives in a different country? Use creative online tools and
resources! Join this workshop to learn and try out a wide range of free
online tools, which could be used in your future projects. Whether you
are a beginner or an advanced PC user, if you like to play on the
computer or just want to have fun, join this workshop! 
Everybody knows the annoyingly longlasting thoughts and feelings we have after
witnessing any form of discriminatory abuse
in public or in school without acting
courageously against it. Afterwards, we
often have great, witty or convincing ideas
about how we could have reacted but in the
situation itself we felt voiceless or helpless. This workshop raises
awareness of unjustifiable discrimination (focusing on those forms
protected by European law) and encourages participants to act by
developing and practicing strategies and techniques in a safe,
relaxing and humorous environment.

“If you are doing something that you love,
an hour can feel like five minutes; if you
are doing something that you do not, five
minutes can feel like an hour.” (Ken
Robinson).
Indeed, it is not only about what you are
doing well, but also about what you love
doing. It is about “something” that you
could not imagine living without. Finding your passion can give your life a
sense of completeness, fulfilment and energy. What are you passionate
about? Have you already found it? How did you find it? Can it be found
in school? How does knowing your passion affect learning? After all, is
there such a thing as passionate learning? Can we have more of it at
school?
No matter whether you already know your passion or you are still
wondering what it is, join us for this passionate workshop!
Passion & Creativity
Working, thinking and learning visually is a
field in rapid growth. Visual language is the
combination of text, shapes and imagery to
illustrate content and create meaning in order
to support the transfer of knowledge and
ideas, to increase common understanding
and to foster “big-picture-thinking”. It can be
applied to a large number of activities in the field of education and
learning, such as: Personal note taking, presentations, mind-mapping or
large scale process visualisations. In our workshop we will unlock
creativity and (re-)discover the ability of working and thinking more
visually by exploring, drawing, doodling and sharing together.
You do not need to be an artist for this workshop, no prior knowledge or
drawing skills are required – everybody can join the doodle revolution!

ALL-DAY WORKSHOP! STUDENTS ONLY!
Size of group: max. 12 participants
Discover a myriad of ways to put things and your
body in motion (which is something you do every
day). Learn how to outwit and utilize gravity at the
same time. Juggling scarves and spinning plates
often mirrors balancing the various activities of
our day-to-day lives. Experience the skills of your
body by building a human pyramid. Get yourself
moving and discover your power and potential:
work on five short performances for the aces Ceremony in about five hours.
In the first part of the workshop, each participant will learn the essential
basics of juggling and human pyramids and we will recreate parts of the
aces dance. Then we will rehearse the performances in a very
concentrated, attentive, friendly and playful atmosphere!
Please prepare the basic choreography of the aces dance at home:
 tutorial video: http://vimeo.com/51515336
 dance tune: www.aces.or.at/acesdance
Please bring:
 for the workshop: comfortable clothes and gym shoes
 for performing at the Ceremony: comfortable BLACK CLOTHES and
if possible comfortable flat BLACK SHOES
Takes place in Seminar room 1, Hotel SUN, First Floor
ONLY IN THE MORNING!
Size of group: max. 20 participants
In aces we have a strong culture of celebration: it
is important to all of us to value achievement,
celebrate people, dance, laugh and enjoy good
company.
This workshop focuses on what it takes for a gettogether or formal act to become a meaningful
celebration. We will explore main points to
consider when preparing a celebration for a larger
group of people and an inside look at the working
of aces celebrations.
A good party needs confident and inviting hosts. What does that mean?
Let’s find out together. You as a participant of this workshop are invited
to take an active role as usher, co-host and party supporter on the
special night that will be happening on the same evening – the aces
Ceremony.
There is a lot to know and learn about how to celebrate well. Be part of
the magic!
Please also reserve extra time for rehearsals from 16:45-17:30!

will get the chance to do so at the aces
Academy. But it’s getting even better: You
can be the artist yourself! And as on every
party there is a game of lights, which will be
designed and colourfully created by us.
Using recycled materials and trying to design different lights to enlighten
our party. We call them Recyclight! Interested? It will be creative,
interactive and lots of fun!
During the workshop we will create and prepare things. Only right after
the workshop we will be able to put up the decoration in the party room.

aces started in 2006. At that time it was impossible to
predict whether aces would become a success or not.
Looking back at seven aces cycles, with 464
participating schools, 25,000 students and 3,500
teachers participating in aces projects and events, aces
would like to know what effect aces has made on the
lives of students and teachers, on schools, and on the lives of others (for example
your community, parents). To do so, aces started an impact evaluation looking at
the long-term effects of the programme, such as:
What would your school be like without aces?
What difference has aces made for you, your school and others?
What have students and teachers learnt during the project implementation?
These and other questions will be examined in the currently ongoing aces impact
evaluation. You can support us!
How? By improving the questionnaires for guided interviews with teachers and
students and by acquiring the skills to conduct qualitative semi-standardised
interviews or focus groups with peer students or teachers of the current and former
cycles of aces. These interviews will be done after the Academy.
Why? Evaluation is about learning. An evaluation helps to improve aces and its
offers for participants in future.
What’s in for you? You will get to know students/teachers of other aces cycles
and schools. It’ll be work but also great fun. aces will issue certificates for students
& teachers that assist the evaluation and think of a little present for your support.
