Seit 2008 leitet sie das Künstlerhaus GlogauAIR. all feel themselves to be strangers among strangers. A process. A living project. The door opens and they arrive with baggage full of materials: cameras, brushes, books, pencils, a sewing machine. The heavy set of keys signals the beginning. Their faces alternate between fear and smiles, the emotion of still not knowing what they will find. Soon they are locating on the map places north and south, Mitte, Kreuzberg and Charlottenburg, the food store, materials store, the underground station...and the galleries whose vernissages are of most interest. In Berlin one creates a very busy social life just in following the opening acts of galleries. It’s hard to get bored as an artist here. Time runs; it sweeps you along with it. The first days are strange, the noises are still foreign, the space and the objects still have no identity; the GlogauAIR staircase looks like it leads up into an enchanted castle. Those newly arrived are seen moving cautiously in the corridors. Then they meet by chance, at breakfast time or in the toilette, and dialogue timidly begins. Through banal daily encounters their relationships get established, woven like a web. For weeks they find themselves adapting to a new kind of host family; they One spends the first time discovering, getting to know and finding oneself in this new reality. A wide-open city that gives all the sensation of being suspended in time, semi-stopped, full of empty and desolate spaces; a city whose climate and condition seems to carry individualism and solitude in its blood and in its bones. But this state of isolation is a gift for the artist, it is the point where one realizes that this is exactly what he or she was looking for: a private, withdrawn space, as though entering into a bubble, cut away from the routine and habitual worries, driving towards an introspective and meditative world where the artistic creation is the centre. In a short time the surrogate brothers and sisters who share the kitchen turn into real members of a family. They acquire their roles and, like a cultural palette, they exchange and observe their traditions, their ways of doing things, their schedules, their customs and habits. Between laughter and curiosity they begin to speak about their works of art: these small monsters that grow in the studios as if they were newborn babies protected from the sun and the outside world, still not ready to greet the light of day. There are beautiful works that have the mark of GlogauAIR engraved on their foreheads: The souvenirs. Some of them have a strong and consistent material component, others simply consider materials a disposable bundle; many can be kept in a cd (4,7 gigabits of art work), others are works that embed themselves radically in the city in the form of photos, graffiti or videos made in Berlin spaces, still some use the GlogauAIR space as a principal motive. None of the art looks alike in any case, but at night, when everyone sleeps, the works speak, observe and reflect themselves, generating an authentic dialogue. It’s as if they were thrown small transparent wires that cross through walls and space, connecting them. Ties that bind, timidly, the artists’ work, imprinting on them a few tiny marks that will last forever. of its universality, is the art which doesn’t lose its rich character of individuality; the introspective element, its freedom of expression, the force which is vibrantly experienced by the artist. In this way, I wonder what the grandchildren of our grandchildren will think when they should see the works that now hang on Kunstraum Kreuzberg / Bethanien; perhaps with distance they will even be able to see more clearly these small wires that join the works. Perhaps they will see clearly the mark of GlogauAIR in the works. It is about materialized memories, mementos of an experience: a trip. It is these types of experiences that feed the arts, that give a sense and meaning to them; a language that transgresses the personal and gives way to a universal dialogue between cultures, between epochs and generations. We can communicate directly with people of antiquity through observing works of art; although their culture is exterminated, their art keeps speaking to us in the present tense. But what is most powerful, in spite Irene Pascual: Born in 1976 in Spain, studied art history at the University of Girona, Fine Arts at “Escola Massana” in Barcelona, and stage decoration both at the “Institut del Teatre”, Barcelona and the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). In her work as an artist, Pascual focuses on painting and performance art. Since 2008, she has been managing the artists’ residency of GlogauAIR. Berlin for a while in order to find their inspiration in the city’s frequently discussed creativity. Among them are not only artists, but also critics, curators and collectors. All those new protagonists pep up the city, “no-go-areas” turn into trendy districts where nothing is left to desire: cafés, designer shops und exclusive clubs. Not to be forgotten are the aspiring art fairs and other events of the urban art world which – in spite of trying to avoid the impression - are centered on the establishment and expansion of art as a business. “GlogauAIR“ – a House and its Artists The fascination radiating from Berlin, is deeply connected to the origins of the city. Berlin would not be the city it is now, without this remarkable appeal on this kind of creative being. Yet, the city has always been special. From the Royal Preussian “main village” of the 17th century, to the first metropolis of the 20th century, Berlin has been populated by immigrants and visionaries right from the start. It has resounded throughout the land that Berlin is Europe’s art metropolis. “Art tourists” from all over the world take up residence in The “GlogauAIR” residency in Berlin-Kreuzberg forms part of this development towards Europe’s art metropolis. Its history is con- sidered exemplary among the city’s most recent developments. In the Mid-1990s, the Spanish artist Chema Alvargonzález moved to Berlin. Kreuzberg became a second home for him. His studio became a popular meeting-point for Spanish artists and gallerists. Troughout the 1990s, Alvargonzález’ career was evolving as was his high profile in the Spanish art scene as a gladly visited contact person in Berlin. At this time, Kreuzberg was a tougher district than today. A great many houses became headquarters of alternative housing projects such as the KÖPI at Köpenicker Straße. Almost throughout the entire 1990s, there was a growing unrest among the people of Kreuzberg. The development of the former Eastern districts such as Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain into the “new alternative”, slowly eased the situation. This “new alternative” has added the color of renovation to grey districts such as Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg. And by the Mid-1990s, Berlin-Mitte - with institutions like the Kunst-Werke Berlin e.V. or the Tacheles at Oranienburger Straße – was already turning into the city’s contemporary art center. Through their visionary programs, these institutions have provided the basis for an ever-increasing artists community. By the end of the 1990s, new institutions such as the “Hamburg Station – Museum of Contemporary Art” were already emerging. The steady inflow of new arrivals to Berlin was encouraged by the low rents and the great number of vacant flats that could be reoccupied. But also new institutional programs enhanced at least the temporary relocation of thousands of people. The Capital Cultural Fund, the Erasmus scholarships of Berlin universities, the DAAD grants and many more. At the start of the 21st century, these institutional aids have brought a different kind of visitors to the city: due to those programs, students from all over the world are and have been able to reside in the city at an average of 6 to 12 months. This concept of “residency” allows a foreigner to live in the city for a limited amount of time, without having to deal with the complicated and bureau- cratic circumstances, usually involved with a longer stay. During this period of time, the foreigner makes an experience that will help him to grow as a person. Such grants were already donated by the Roman Academy during the 16th century and were rediscovered on the verge of the 21st century. Alvargonzález wondered why only students were admitted to such programs. Would it not be more productive to make experiences of this kind available to wider audiences, such as those who have finished their studies, but are still interested in achieving new experiences? Due to his position in the art scene, and by then an excellent connosoir of Kreuzberg, Alvargonzález was advised of an abandoned property in late 1999. Shortly after 2002, a former school at Glogauer Straße in Berlin-Kreuzberg became “GlogauAIR”, a place for artists from all over the world. A place for the exchange of ideas, aiming at the expansion of Berlin’s international artistic scene. Alvargonzález bought the property and founded a GmbH (Ltd) to administrate it. The entire Spanish art scene reacted enthusiastically to this idea and has supported the program right from the start through scholarships from Spanish universities and other culture programs. Berlin’s recent history that has established the city as the metropolis of the creative world, is also closely connected with this small personal initiative that has brought forth one of the most important locations for cultural exchange in a short lapse of time. I wish GlogauAIR many more successful years on the top of alternative Berlin. Creixell Espilla-Gilart: An art historian and curator, born in 1978 in Lleida/Spain. In addition, she heads the project space “vierter stock” in Berlin-Wedding. SOUVENIR SOUVENIR. SOUVENIR, the longing: I would like to keep something -that’s yours! SOUVENIR SOUVENIR, is a highly ironic, yet meaningful music video, sexy and in black-and-white, by Bill Ramsey. I believe, it is simply fabulous: without much fuss, it crosses in text and vision the boundaries that encircle the wordlet SOUVENIR like a special aura and thus make it so appealing. The video is staged in an easy manner. Bill SOUVENIR pushes a cart filled with desirable objects onto the stage. Several girls dance self-depreciating kitschy folk dances. The stage is sparsely decorated. Stripe design, recalling the texture of canvas chairs, icon-like and larger than life. SOUVENIR SOUVENIR. It is related to the fetish, the longing for something connected with an idolized person, a star, a demigod. The souvenir becomes a devotional object, it improves the attitude to life and conveys a feeling of happiness and I find it a very straightforward approach. It is here that the change-over to art is lurking and this is exactly what we do, when we travel and create art: We mug ourselves, snatch either the best or a piece of it away from ourselves. Experiences, someting unique. Thus it becomes eternity, is canonized, turns into matter, as if cast in perspex. It remains the way it had been. Untouchable, yet visible to many, elevated, like on an altar. A frozen good, the creation, my souvenir. Die Künstlerin und Kuratorin Lena Braun, hier als reinszenierte Peggy Guggenheim SOUVENIR SOUVENIR. A souvenir is an ob- ject, one picks up and treasures as a memory of a certain event, a certain place or person. In art, one goes a step further. You perform magic, enchant with what you pick up and treasure. The auxesis of your own memory becomes a charme, a magic remedy. The term “fetish”, deriving from Portuguese, indicates exactly that. No matter if it pertains an erotic or a social meaning, it is all about worship and personal complacency. SOUVENIR SOUVENIR. Have a look at the appreciations, the manifestations of life, the results, the secrets, the big and small verities. This is what we see in the exhibition. In many different variations, yet always sincere. I am. And since I am, I have been a Berliner. And that’s what I have picked up, fetched myself. Take a look! on the cake of life a guitar string touched by Elvis and the clasp of a blouse la Lollo wore Souvenirs Souvenirs from Paris and Cannes a hat owned by Chevalier and a letter by the Third Man Ricky Nelson’s pipe and Stirling Moss’ licence by Bill Ramsey Souvenirs Souvenirs come and buy them, folks Charlie Chaplin’s shoe and Picasso’s comb The Garbo’s pair of glasses and la Monroe’s sponge the white cloth from Louis’ trumpet and Eddie’s pistol that brought the gangsters down come and buy them, folks ‘cause they’re the icing Souvenirs Souvenirs from a gilden age Souvenirs Souvenirs derive the colorful dreams of our lonliness they all leave somethin’ behind this world’s grandees it’s the souvenirs you find everywhere Lena Braun: An artist and curator. She works at the artists’ residence GlogauAIR as a project manager. She graduated from the Free University of Berlin with a degree in Communication Studies. In 2008 she celebrated her 20th anniversary as an independent curator. She has gained wide attention by her project spaces Galerie Bichette, Galerie Loulou Lasard, Boudoir, Barbie Deinhoff’s and studioxxberlin. Her activity is focused on young international art made in Berlin. With her exhibition RED HOUSE that took place at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/ Bethanien in 2008, she declared her love for the city and in particular for the creative district of Kreuzberg. A SOUVENIR is an object picked up and kept in memory of a certain event, place or person. SOUVENIRS can also be finds that obtain their meaning only through the souvenir owner, they are not implicitly recognizable as SOUVENIRS. Such memorabilia are deliberately confined from the souvenir industry. The exhibition refers to the term SOUVENIR, since artists residing in a foreign environment take advantage of the process-like perception of memories as part of their creative work. SOUVENIR shows the works of 25 artists, who lived at the artists’ residency GlogauAIR from April 2008 to May 2009, in a joint exhibition at Kunstraum Kreuzberg. Cecilio Chaves - Spanien Biografie: Geboren 1972 in Cádiz. “The main purpose of my work is to make a connection between the city and the people who live there. To achieve that, I look at the city both as a visitor and as a citizen, searching for forms and characteristic elements, which I later try to capture on canvas in a way that can be understood by the observer. I hope that the observer is able to recognize Berlin in my work as the place where he lives and which enriches his own daily life.” My time and work in Berlin: “The stay at GlogauAIR has provided me with a renewal of ideas and has helped me to regard my own work from the outside, as a coherence different from the everyday context. In the studio, the work is generally created and conditioned by routine. The contact with other people and other artistic expressions, has hopefully enriched my work both conceptually and with regard to contents.” Petra Grozaj - Kroatien ABSTRAKT, CHARISMATISCH, REAL, FREIHEIT, KONTRAST Biografie: Geboren 1974 in Zagreb. Die Einzelausstellung ‚Everything is the same story‘ war das Ergebnis meines Aufenthalts in Berlin. In 2002 she earned a degree (MA) in painting and art education at the Academy of Fine Arts, Zagreb. Beforehand she graduated from the School of Arts and Design, Zagreb. In 2007, Petra Grozaj received a grant from the Croatian Ministry of Culture for the Art Residence Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. My time and work in Berlin: “The Work ‘Flash back’ connects the theme of the exhibition ‘Souvenir’ with my latest solo show entitled ‘Everything is the same story’ which came out as a result of my stay in Berlin. I was a resident at GlogauAIR over a period of 2 months, living and working at the residency. During the time of my stay, I had a chance to meet other artists from around the world, working in different art media and exchange experiences. I had exhibited and presented my work at the Open Studios Show, which took place in May 2008 and had a lot of visitors. The residency staff and leadership were very supportive and open for anything that could help an artist in his/ her work: becoming acquainted with other artists, gallerys and the town in general. GlogauAIR plays an important role in the city’s multicultural art scene.” Elisa Balmaceda - Chile LEERE ORTE, ALTMODISCH, LEBEN AUF DEM FAHRRAD, GESCHICHTE, SCHNEE Biografie: Geboren 1985 in Santiago, Chile, lebt und arbeitet dort. Die Vergangenheit ist in ihnen hängen geblieben.“ “EMPTY SPACES, VINTAGE, LIFE ON A BICYCLE, HISTORY, SNOW” Biography: Born in 1985 in Santiago, Chile, lives and works in Santiago. In 2006 she graduated (BFA) from the Catholic University of Chile. Her project “Hypnotic Television” was on display in Chile, Spain and Germany in 2008 and 2009. She participated in the “BAC Festival 2008”, Contemporary Art Festival at the Contemporary Culture Centre of Barcelona, in the same year she took part in the exhibitions “Bad robot” at the Spanish Culture Institute in Santiago, Chile and “Crosses” at the Contemporary Art Museum in Valdivia, Chile (2008). The residency at GlogauAIR was made possible by FONDART Grant (Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo Cultural y las Artes, donated by the Chilean Government). My time and work in Berlin: “I wake up in the morning and I see a white landscape through my window: a deserted football field totally covered with snow. I go out, and walk across the street, feeling the melodic sound of my boots on the snow. Once riding on my bicycle, I cross the Görlitzer Park. I see a lot of green areas, with no fences, and sometimes no lights, it’s just nature in the middle of the city. Everything looks a little vintage, from another time. On the way to Mitte, I stop to take a look around. Lots of buildings have a flat empty façade. It seems there is always some emptiness on the street, and empty spaces that look like the scars left by the past history of Berlin. In my mind, this void has been filled with ruins. And, in some way, ruins represent that: They are the visible image of something from the past. The past is suspended in them.” HUNDEKACKE! “FOREIGNER LOGISTICS, SNOW SMILES, TRÖDELLADENLIEBE, WINTERBRAIN, PASS’AUF! HUNDEKACKE!” Biography: Born October 31st, 1975 in Melbourne. Director, artist and performance artist in the field of puppetry and visual theatre. Both national and international festival participations, i.a.: Human Layer, 2005 Melbourne Fringe Festival (Most Visionary); 2006 Adelaide Fringe, Men of Steel, (Festival Directors Award, 2006) and international tours to Edinburgh, Dublin, China, Hong Kong, London’s SOHO Theatre, New Zealand and Singapore; COOP, for Black Hole Theatre, ‘07 – ’08, Mr Freezy, Arena Theatre Company, ’08. Tamara Rewse aka Sk te Vikingr recently won an Arts Development award for Morbid Porn, a new solo work, at the Short and Sweet Festival, Melbourne, Australia. My time and work in Berlin: “The time at GlogauAIR has given me the opportunity to examine the content and ideas of this project within the context of another culture. I am interested in visual non verbal work, primarily because it is not bound by the limitations of language. I play with objects, shadows and projections. In the SOUVENIR-exhibition I have the opportunity to blend making and performance techniques with an installation and present a style of installation I would not have had the opportunity to show in Australia.” Eduardo Balanza - Spanien Biografie: Balanza schloß 1997 sein Studium der Audiovisuellen Medien ab. Danach besuchte er die School of Visual Arts, New York und Parsons The New School for Design, New York. Afterwards he attended both the School of Visual Arts, New York and Parsons The New School for Design, New York. He attended workshops, hosted by Isidoro Valcárcel Medina, Murcia/ 2003, Lara Almarcegui, Blanca, Murcia/ 2003 and “Ruins in the city”, Beirut, Lebanon/ 2008. In 2008, he was granted a scholarship for the artist-in-residence program PAC at GlogauAIR, Berlin and was awarded the 2nd prize at the video festival RENDIVÚ, 2008. His most recent solo exhibition was the Radio Cobra Project “Las mil y una noches”, M.M.M. Cartagena, 2008 My time and work in Berlin: “My work is based on music as the main means to explore urban culture and ‘collective identities’. Berlin has significantly influenced my work, since music here plays an important social role, either in clubs or as live music or just in general terms. Berlin is a city rich in culture. That provides an intense experience. My personal work has led me through the whole city. I’ve made photos of street markets, where records are sold and of music stores, bazaars, of record covers and magazines. Of people dancing in public places or elsewhere. Of clubs and lounges and public spaces, of car parks and abandonded premises, that can be used as a setting for improvised feasts.” Anna Pickering - Schottland KÄLTE, INTENSITÄT, PAUSE, IDEEN, SCHLOSS Biografie: Geboren in Glasgow, Schottland, lebt in London. Pickering schloß 2006 das Studium am MFA Goldsmiths College der Universität London ab. Ihre wichtigsten Ausstellungen: 2006, „Rag and Bone“, Three Colts Gallery, London; 2007, „Ate“, Usher Gallery, Lincoln; „Peer Esteem“ Five Years Gallery, London; „Roam“ The Hay Gallery, Colchester Institute, Colchester. In 2006 she graduated from the MFA Goldsmiths College, University of London. Her most important exhibitions include: 2006, “Rag and Bone”, Three Colts Gallery, London; 2007 “Ate”, Usher Gallery, Lincoln; “Peer Esteem” Five Years Gallery, London; “Roam” The Hay Gallery, Colchester Institute, Colchester. My time and work in Berlin: “This residency was the first that I have done and so I have nothing to compare it with, but artists are always looking for a place where they can think and work, quietly and in a responsive environment. The normal everyday pressures of earning a living always consume a great deal of energy and three months for reflection and art production was very much looked forward to. Berlin is a dream-catcher for artists, it’s like a charm, and the residency itself provides a supportive ‘base-camp’. I wanted to develop a piece of art that considered our daily negotiations with language, gesture and place; that recalled the overlapping public dialogue of international city life, and the co-existent private narratives of its inhabitants. Immersion and interpretation without the use of verbal language. As is often the way, I have more than strayed from my initial proposal, not so much in terms of the ideas, but in terms of their execution. I made a video when I assumed that I would ‘build’ something. And, equally as enjoyable, I have made contact with a new group of people who are generous with their skills and enthusiastic in their response. It has been a significant time.” José de León - Spanien Biografie: Geboren in León, Spanien. José de León has exhibited his work in international contexts, i.a. in Madrid, New York, Geneva, Sevilla, Colorado/ USA, Barcelona, Brussels, Palma de Mallorca and in León. My time and work in Berlin: “THE PHILOSOPHER’S BANISHMENT: Every day, at 6 p.m., the church bells of the nearby church tolled. Then I started to prepare “officially” for my work by burning incense and slipping on my smock. Long, fruitful nights. Everybody is asleep at this time. Later on, when I crossed the nearby canal, I was greeted by the white swans, in the cold of the black night. They already know me. This way, I spent the whole winter, enclosed with my friend, the holy lonliness. Then the days started to get longer and the birds were singing. At once, the whole city had dressed up in green, and the church bells were swinging back and forth with even more fervour. Summer has come. Everyone was walking the streets and it seemed as if the sun was never going to set.” “A starting point for thinking; a complete work may only have one answer and result, incomplete work leads us to many possibilities for realising imagination”. Idetsuki Hideaki is concerned with the distance between human beings and their surroundings. He searches for the invisible both within and around people. “If we can notice the invisible in our surroundings, body and spirit, then we will have a boundless landscape in our minds”. He aims to reintroduce the notion of everyday existence, revealing it through the mundane and turning every undertaking into a new idea. His work reflects many aspects of Japanese life. Idetsuki Hideaki’s recent group exhibitions include “Le Life” (2007), Echigo-Tsumari triennal (2006), Centre for Contemporary Art Warsaw (2002), Turin Biennal (2002), and solo exhibitions include: Gallery LEME (2008) process room, Irish Museum of Modern Art (2006), Academy Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart (2000). In 2007 he received the Pollock-Krasner foundation grant. My time and work in Berlin: “In my view, GlogauAIR is the best location in Berlin: a great international meeting point, and there are no indecent persons among the artists residing there, after all.” Lives and works in Berlin and in Cork City, Ireland. Özgünaydin has travelled widely, she lived in Capetown for a year, before she settled in Cork City to study Fine Arts at the Crawford College of Art & Design. Currently she is a guest student at the Berlin University of The Arts (UDK) with Hito Steyerl. Her work – both video and site-specific installations – has been shown in Budapest, Cork, Barcelona and Berlin. Funda is Turkish by descent and her triple nationality influences her work. My time and work in Berlin: “My main focus lies in the origins of the boundaries of human feelings of displacement, culture, religion and political as well as individual and social identities. Some of my characters are taken directly from historical cultural backgrounds, while others rely on my own interpretation and imagination. I like to present my work in a playful manner. I take a great interest in which way actual art is leaving behind physical and visual traces in society. My work is mostly based on confused structures meant to create an inspiration to rethink patterns of interrelationships within an organization, society or sub-cultural living.” Alfonso M. Escudero FAHRRAD, BOXEN, BIER, ARBEIT, MAGIE - Spanien Biografie: Geboren 1973 in Murcia, Spanien. Escudero studied ceramics at the Academy of Arts in Murcia. He attended contemporary art workshops, hosted by Pedro Cano at the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid and landscape art workshops, hosted by Alfonso Albacete and Manuel Quejido in Blanca. He was awarded major art prizes like the I. Premio Creación Joven Cerámica, Murcia; the I. Premio Creación Joven Escultura, Murcia- and the I. Premio Muestra Regional de Artes Plásticas y Murcia Joven ’97. Escudero had solo exhibitions i.a. at Galería de Arte La Rivera, Galería Efe Serrano, Muralla Árabe in Verónicas, La Sala Naranja in Valencia and at Centro Párraga, Murcia. He also participated in Arco ’98, Madrid and LINEART ’02, Gante, Belgium as well as in the international biennial Hermandades Escultóricas, Ciudad de Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico- and in the festivals AlterArte and Espirelia, Murcia. The scholarship, granted by the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, enabled him to participate in the artist-in-residence program in Berlin. Escudero’s work is to be found in leading public and private art collections both at home and abroad. About my time and work in Berlin: “I am engaged in the connections between publicity and art and the variations, generated by the current topic in our culture. I am interested in the different proposals, implicated by the numerous communicative, conceptional and aesthetic possibilities. During this process, I reflect on language, its significance and the varied communicative currents in society.” Cécile Azoulay - Frankreich SPREEPARK, SONNENALLEE, GESCHICHTEN, IM UMBAU, GRÜN Biografie: Geboren 1980 in Lyon. Aktuelle Ausstellungen waren u.a.: Nessun uomo è un’isola (Venedig), Matter of Time (London), Invisible Parcours (Berlin), Insomnies (Nogent-sur-Marne). Azoulay lives and works in Paris. She graduated in Fine Arts from the Glasgow School of Art and the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in Lyon. Her work has been exhibited in France, Scotland, Germany, Italy, England, Poland, and China. Recent exhibitions include: Nessun uomo è un’isola (Venice), Matter of Time (London), Invisible Parcours (Berlin), Insomnies (Nogent-sur-Marne). My time and work in Berlin: “More than an intense working period, my stay at GlogauAIR was also full of meeting people, walking around the city, looking for equipment at the local hardware stores, trying to catch the Berlin TV tower from everywhere I was. GlogauAIR provided all ingredients imaginable to make my residence in Berlin not only studio-based, but also receptive of what happened all around. The kitchen table of GlogauAIR quickly became an important meeting point for endless discussions. The close-by Landwehrkanal and the garden were the places to escape when my work was consuming me, the city itself turned into a key point. Being able to work in Berlin was challenging, both in terms of experience and exchange. The studios encouraged experimentation – trying out things, having doubts, even taking risks was all possible in the course of the time and through the dynamic of the place. The relationship between us artists, all of us spending most of our time in our studios, was of utmost importance, since it enabled us to discuss the whole process of work and to additionally interact in an everyday basis.” Mariana Viegas - Portugal Biografie: Geboren 1969 in Lissabon. Mariana Viegas lives and works in Lisbon and Berlin, she studied Photography and Fine Arts (MFA) at the Arco Visual Center in Lisbon. Her work has been exhibited in Portugal, Spain, France, England, Germany, Italy, Brazil and in the U.S. My time and work in Berlin: “This room is the frame where everything and nothing happens. To take refuge in oneself is to admit capture. To become deaf, the possibility to experience a world without sounds. She disappeared into complete silence. In the haunted house are friendly ghosts. Musing turns into an amusement for her, sharing and keeping secrets. Fake lakes, waterfalls, temples where the beasts live. We are almost understanding the action and that it is about to transform into another. The eternal possibility of an ending unveils, an ending that will never come.” Pilar Alonso graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Sevilla. She furthered her studies in Frankfurt/ Main with Per Kirkeby by means of a Barrie de la Maza grant. Alonso shows her work in solo and collective exhibitions in Spanish and German galleries. Her work is represented in private and public collections. The leitmotif of her work is the concept of time and the way it passes and flies. She conceives time as parallel lines evolving as they connect through cracks or gates. In Alonso’s view, there exist three different kinds of “time”. One is artificial time created by our society with artificial measures like years, schedules and careers. Then there is biological time: we belong to a world in which you are born, live and die, reflecting the course of nature. And in the midst of these two kinds of time, there is another: the time of creation. It is a different time, crazy, with its own rules, but definitely a mix of the other two. Alonso’s works are full of metaphors, like fish that slip out of our hands when we want to catch them. They represent the fast passing of time and how we are not able to grasp it. My time and work in Berlin: “At present, Berlin is one of the most important cultural centers of reference in the world. Artists from everywhere come to get to know the city and obtain an idea of it. GlogauAIR is like a platform that makes it easier to become part of the flow of the city and it connects us to the reality of other artists.” Anna Szigethy - Ungarn ROH, AUFRICHTIG, MELANCHOLIE, BREIT, BEKANNT Biografie: Geboren 1970 in Budapest, lebt und arbeitet in Budapest und Paris. Szigethy studierte Kunst an der Ungarischen Kunsthochschule, Budapest und der Universität Paris. Sie war Gast an der Ecole Regionale des Beaux-Arts, Rennes und Villa Arson, Nizza. Wichtige Einzelausstellungen waren 2009 Non-Place, AproPodium Galerie, Budapest, 2008 Strategies of a Balance, Studio Galerie, Budapest, Journal intime, Ungarisches Kulturinstitut, Bratislava 2006 Journal intime, Lumen Galerie, Budapest und 2004 Gallery by Night, Studio Galerie, Budapest. Szigethy studied art at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, Budapest and the University of Paris. She attended both the Ecole Regionale des BeauxArts, Rennes and Villa Arson, Nizza, as a visiting student. Important solo exhibitions include: 2009 Non-Place, AproPodium Gallery, Budapest, 2008 Strategies of a Balance, Studio Gallery, Budapest, Journal intime, Institute of Hungarian Culture, Bratislava, 2006, Journal intime, Lumen Gallery, Budapest and 2004 Gallery by Night, Studio Gallery, Budapest. My time and work in Berlin: “I like to contrast my work with ordinary objects. Thus, they obtain a completely different meaning. The sometimes ironical, sometimes playful framework is a source for a new significance of images, balancing, refining or strengthening their tone respectively. I’ve been collecting and using kitschy plastic objects for a long time. In my projects, I like to contrast and even clash them with uncommon situations. Sometimes the place where we live, where we go shopping or entertain ourselves, is as kitchy as the objects I choose and put on display. It is this kitchy world that surrounds us in our everyday lives, it is the base, the space platform for an abundance of personal, emotional and dramatic moments and has much more influence on us than expected. This ubiquitous mingling of qualities defines the urban space as well as our surfing on the Internet or among the TV channels. We are in search of certain contents, either sensible or sentimental, kitschy or classy or several at the same time.” ÄSTHETIK, KUNSTFERTIGKEIT, INSTINKT, SUBKULTUREN, INDIVIDUALISIERUNG “AESTHETICS, CRAFTSMANSHIP, INSTINCT, SUBCULTURES, INDIVIDUALIZATION” Biography: Born May 5th, 1979 in Geldrop, Netherlands. Rein Vollenga completed his 3-month residency at GlogauAIR in January 2009. In 2007, he graduated from the Art Academy (AKV)/ St. Joost Den Bosch, Netherlands. Rein Vollenga’s sculptural and video based work is a reaction to contemporary media’s representation of the human body and its standardized perceptions of beauty and gender. Through looking at the body perception in both primitive and contemporary cultures, media, science and technology his work investigates how our removal from natural instincts is affecting our psyche. His work is often contradictory in its inherent appreciation and fascination for the very culture he is critical of. By simulating mass production techniques, his sculptures are in contrary to their slick surfaces results of labour intensive craftsmanship. His videos are similarly criticizing mass media’s commodifying of subcultures in spite of mimicking their surface aesthetics. Vollenga participated in numerous exhibitions and festivals i.a.: 2008, “Body Strike”, Gallery Poonberg, Rotterdam; 2007 at the Museum Jan Cunen, Oss and “Lust for life”, United C, Eindhoven, as well as Gallery de Compagnie, Dordrecht, Netherlands. Das war auch eine große Touristenattraktion.“ “COLD, DEADPAN, CYCLING, CLOSED, OPEN” Biography: Born in 1972 in South Korea, Moonjoo Lee studied painting at Seoul National University and the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, USA. She received grants from Art Council Korea, which enabled her to participate in Künstlerhaus Bethanien’s International Studio Program (2007/ 2008) and in the artist-in-residence program at GlogauAIR (2008), Berlin. Her recent solo shows include Urban Detritus (Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin) and Shadow of Reality (MK Gallery, Rotterdam). She currently lives and works in Seoul. My time and work in Berlin: “My work focuses on sites under urban redevelopment in the cities where I lived such as Seoul, Boston, Detroit, and in 2008 also Berlin. During my residency at GlogauAIR, I focused on documenting the transformation of the area between Berlin Ostbahnhof and Warschauer Straße, where abandonment and development overlap. I was especially interested in the construction process of O2 World, a ‘new arena of entertainment’ meant to revitalize this area. The arena shows monumental scale and a futuristic look, which domineer over the landscape around it. Recently the developer partly cut off remains of the former Berlin Wall across the O2 World to make an access to the river. Here tourists face a strange confrontation between different kinds of monumentality. Whereas the O2 World was being constructed, the Palace of the Republic on the other side of Berlin was being taken down, which became also a major tourist attraction.” SAM 3 - Spanien Biografie: Geboren 1980 in Elche. Sam3 lives and works in Murcia, Spain. His large street murals, to be found across Europe, in the U.S. and many other places, can hardly be overlooked. My time and work in Berlin: “Berlin is a city in constant transformation. Thus, it is the perfect place to tell a story about the renovation of surfaces and periodic behavioural patterns of a metropolis. In her, I draw a simple portrait, both vital and inanimate, of the collective and the personal. I speak of billboards, trees and everything transient, that makes up Berlin. I write a story about transcendence, about my personal confrontation with public space. The creative process has been the most interesting part. In order to give it a start, I brought finds from the city back to my studio at GlogauAIR and did detailed drawings as warm-up and precondition for the later creation of actual paintings.” Ebert attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and in 1992 he received his Master degree with Professor Gerd van Dülmen. In 2008 he was awarded in the design contest “Artists taking a view of Switzerland”. In 2006 he exhibited his work at the manor in Vichel/ Brandenburg and at the Musical Intermezzo in Maria Hilf/ Geretsried, Upper Bavaria, Germany. In addition, Ebert collaborated with the galleries Benario, Hammer&Herzner, Gallery 61 and with the art society of Weiden, Germany. My time and work in Berlin: “I like to be confronted with artists from all over the world. We meet frequently in order to look at each other’s work or to watch art videos together. That’s an inspiration. In the exhibition SOUVENIR, my machine ‘Der Gängerer’ is on display. It’s all about fragility and balance. Returning to his natural balance, each demijohn puts his as well as the others’ stability to a test. I was interested in this interconnectedness and conflict. A coherent further development of this work would be the construction of a second identical mechanism, moving skulls instead of glass bottles. Yet, they wouldn’t touch any longer, but be completely still. This, however, would lead too far. I can explain it this way: the demijohns also symbolize the spiritual field, surrounding the individuum. Thus, the machine tells us about the conflict of human thinking, about encounter and resistance. That, however bridges to the way of working and the communication structure at the residency at Glogauerstrasse 16.” Cordeiro graduated in drawing from MG Federal University, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, where she also works and lives. Her work is experimental. She has participated in several collective and solo exhibitions and video festivals like Container Art, São Paolo, The Big Misunderstanding - 10 years anniversary Gallery Anita Beckers, Frankfurt, Germany. My time and work in Berlin: “On arriving in Berlin, I sensed that I would have to get along with various adversities in order to realize my project, among them the weather, the language, the difficulty of communication and locomotion, furthermore the lack of structure necessary for my current project. What I called adverseness was turning on another thought, in fact achieving works through my daily references to this new place where I’d live for three months. From that moment on, everything became a reference to my work, the passage of time, the color of the city, the accumulation of my trash, the food, after all, everything that was next to me and could be thought of as art material. I believe that the lack of a situation favorable for the realization of certain projects, makes the artist more receptive to intuition and creativity. In this case, there are no losses. I named the process of transformation of my new references concerning the artistic object itself: creative adversity.” Rika Aki - Japan Biografie: Geboren 1971 in Syodo Island, Kagawa. Ich habe das Projekt ‚Memory in your hands‘ während meines Aufenthalts bei GlogauAIR umgesetzt.“ MEDITATIVES LEBEN, BEGEGNUNGEN MIT MENSCHEN, IM LEBEN AN KUNST DENKEN, HOLZWEGE, WILDSCHWEIN “MEDITATIVE LIFE, ENCOUNTER WITH PEOPLE, THINKING OF ART IN LIFE, HOLZWEGE, WILD BOAR” Biography: Born in 1971 in Syodo Island, Kagawa. BFA graduate (sculpture) at the Nagoya University of Arts in 1994, completed the graduate program at the Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts. In 2004 she participated in the II. Fuchu Biennial and in 2008 she took part in the Kamiyama artist in residence program. In 2009 she is supported by both the Ashahi Simbun Foundation and the Nomura Cultural Foundation. My time and work in Berlin: “The purpose of my work is to release one’s own recollection and delicate senses that each one feels in daily life through the aggregation of uniform images. I am interested in the relationship between local society and daily life. So, by doing fieldwork, I have created installations, made from daily necessities and imagery which we normally use without consideration. I feel how important it is that art relates to the community as a communication tool. I realized the project ‘Memory in your hands’ during my stay at GlogauAIR.” WORK, CALM, FRIENDSHIP, ADVENTURE” Biography: Santiago Lara was born in 1975 in Tomelloso, Spain, Beatriz Coto in 1977 in Gijon. LARA studied Fine Arts at Universidad Complutense in Madrid, Beatriz Coto at the University of Granada. Their work is based on the union of painting and drawing with digital art. They have participated in “Optica”, International Festival of Video Art in Gijon, and have exhibited in places like the Institute Cervantes of Paris, the gallery Espacio Líquido, Video Loop Sala LAi and in Revillagigedo Palace, Gijon. They were awarded one of the scholarships AlNorte and after their stay at GlogauAIR, Berlin, their work was selected for the collection of the CEX of Ciudad Real, as well as for the itinerant exhibition Luarca’s CNAL (Delegation of Government of Asturias in Madrid). Our time and work in Berlin: “The artist residence of GlogauAIR has been a very inspiring setting for our work, not only as an ideal place to work, but also in the realization of our designs. Kreuzberg is strongly linked with the city of Berlin. This particular mix of culture and personal environment is of great importance for the imagination and furthers the realization of creative projects. In the exhibition, we show two video-animations: ‘Refugio’ and ‘Vulcano’, on display together with ten miniature-paintings that support the two animation designs. The possible union between digital art and pictorial art has been reinforced during our stay in Kreuzberg. Every day in Berlin was an adventure for us, it was an ideal setting to provide our work with freshness and was also the starting point of our work as resident artists in this city.” Ich bin GlogauAIR zu großem Dank verpflichtet.“ VERMISCHTES, GESCHEHEN, BELADEN, TREFFER, SCHNEE, VERSCHIEDENARTIGKEIT “MIXED, HAPPENING, LOADING, HIT, SNOW, DIVERSITY” Biography: My work is about staging individuals’ stories. The stories derive from my own memory or from the people who participate in my project. These are the small stories kept in the dark of someone’s memory: childhood memories, frequent dreams, terrors and fantasies seizing the individual. The participants, including myself, become the producers of the play. Through the joint work involving in-depth conversations and interviews, the participants are able to rise above being mere assistants of the artist, and become the subject of the play, being able to naturally narrate their own individual stories. To me, this process of dealing with personal memories had a great self-healing effect. And later on I discovered that the participants had experienced the same effect. My time and work in Berlin: “Berlin is a very attractive city with a great number of artists gathering. I have observed and experienced a lot. The experience at GlogauAIR was exciting and a good opportunity to find new possibilities for my next project. There was a vital exchange between the various artists in residence. The staff of GlogauAIR helped me a lot in the realization of my project. I am deeply grateful to GlogauAIR.” Perunovich’s work has been shown i.a. at the VIII. Biennial in Havana, Cuba, the II. Biennial of Tirana, Albania, the IV. Cetinje Biennial in Yugoslavia, the Independents Biennial Liverpool, Trampoline Multi Media Art Festival, Nottingham, UK, at the International Biennial of V.N. in Cerveira, Portugal, the VI. Vrsac Biennial in Serbia and Montenegro, the Diaspora of Rialtosantanbrogio in Rome, at E:vent Gallery, London, Kosovo Art Gallery, Prishtina. My time and work in Berlin: “I like to work within a site-specific context and deal with the architectural and aesthetic parameters of the exhibiting space. During my stay at GlogauAIR I occupied with the graphic pattern of chain-link fencing and explored the opposite notions of confinement and freedom, public and private, permanence and transition, separation and communication. Homage to Mother, Light at the End, Spiral Descent, Veiling-Unveiling are intimate reflections on family, passing, fragility, interconnectedness, and at the same time reflections on relationships in a larger, universal context.” Larivière lives and works in Paris. He studied Fine Arts at the ENSAD (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs) and in 2005, he graduated within the scope of an exchange program from the School of Visual Arts in New York. In 2003, he was awarded the 2nd Young Artist prize of the Salon d’Automne and in 2007, he was granted a scholarship for a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. His working process is based on the creation of settings whose constitutive elements derive from different sources and backgrounds. The collage allows to put them on the same level and to confront them. Thus, a distanciation is created, that gives rein to illusion. Each perceived object or person is out of the ordinary and strange. His paintings can be read as an attempt to reconcile irreconcilables, contemporaries and classics, beyond a confrontation between genres. My time and work in Berlin: “The heavily ornated architecture that surrounds you in cities like Paris or Rome reflects the richness of their prestigious history. The wastelands you can find in the center of Berlin are like blank sheets ready to be written on. It was refreshing for me as an artist to be in the middle of this gap, a synonym of freedom. I have produced a new corpus of paintings that are more sensitive to space and balance and I have become more familiar with German artists dealing with narrative issues in their work, like the Leipzig School painters.” Araceli Martinez - Spanien Biografie: Geboren 1983 in Murcia, Spanien. In 2006, Martinez graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Murcia. In 2003 she attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, by means of an Erasmus scholarship and in 2005 she received a grant for painters residing at Quintanar Palace, Segovia and the Seneca scholarship enabled her to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona. In 2006 she won the artistic training award at the Center of Free Art “José María Párraga” in Murcia. In 2008 the Contemporary Art Projects Award of Murcia enabled her to continue her project “Society of Oblivion” during her residence stay at GlogauAIR. Her most recent solo exhibition was at the Institute of Pathology in Cartagena, organized by LAB Murcia in 2008. My time and work in Berlin: “The work experience in Berlin was very inspiring, since important historic and social events have taken place here. It was very interesting to record local people, living their ordinary lives in a city where past, present and future mingle together. My project had the aim of showing that the society was aware of the historic events. I recorded people of different nationalities in order to put the influence of the historic environment in context with their memories. The project result shows more than 200 persons, recorded in Spain (Murcia, Valencia, Madrid and Barcelona), Italy (Turin) and Germany (Berlin). They make up a mosaic of concerns affecting contemporary society.” Impressum Dieser Katalog erscheint im Rahmen der Ausstellung SOUVENIR, 25 Artists in Residence at GlogauAIR im Kunstraum Kreuzberg / Bethanien Kuratiert von Irene Pascual und Lena Braun 09.05 - 21.06.2009 täglich 12 - 19 Uhr Kunstraum Kreuzberg / Bethanien Mariannenplatz 2, 10997 Berlin Herausgeberin: Irene Pascual mit Unterstützung der Spanischen Botschaft Redaktion: Lena Braun Künstlerische Gestaltung und Grafik von Plakat und Katalog: Shoxxx (www.shoxxxboxxx.com) Übersetzungen: Iris Weirich Assistenz GlogauAIR: Rosa Teixidor, Lucía López, Ana F.
