3 13.02.2014 Overview – Barrick Gold Company profile Barrick Gold (Barrick) is one of the world's largest gold mining shares with an annual production of no less than 7.0-7.4m ounces. The gold is, among other things, being used for jewellery (accounted for 43% in 2012), for the industry (10% in 2012) and the remaining part as investments. Barrick has gold mines in the US, Canada, South America, Australia and Africa. Barrick also extracts copper. It is headquartered in Canada (Toronto). The 26,000 employees are in 2014 expected to generate sales of USD 12.1bn, an EBITDA of USD 5.4bn, an adjusted net result of USD 2.2bn and a free cash flow of USD 1.2bn. As most other gold mining shares Barrick is not hedging its exposure to gold. In addition, Barrick Gold particularly has a good Quality score, supporting our view of the company as a strong quality company. Price triggers A significant increase of the gold price. The Pascua-Lama mining starts earlier than planned (mid-2016). Investment case Among the world's largest gold mining shares, Barrick belongs to the quantile with the lowest extraction costs per ounce. Although the price of gold has stabilised in recent months, the Barrick share remains under pressure as many investors still fear a new decline in the gold price. If the gold price remains at its current spread, it should only be a matter of time before investors will change their attitude. This will open up for a re-rating of the Barrick share. Risk factors A sharp decline of the gold price will hurt earnings and the operative cash flow. It should, however, be noted that compared to other major gold mining shares, Barrick Gold has relatively low total costs per ounce. New delays of the Pascua-Lama mine (e.g. because Barrick Gold does not receive authorities' permissions fast enough). Barrick Gold does not manage to reduce its net debt. Gold loses its status as a safe-haven investment. Rivals find one or more huge gold mines that threaten to increase the supply dramatically. 4 13.02.2014 Disclaimer & Disclosure Jyske Bank is supervised by the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority. Recommendation Risk-adjusted return Strong Buy Buy Reduce >20% 10-20% 0-10% Sell <0% Source: Jyske Bank Share recommendation concepts Our recommendations are relative to the market development and are based on an evaluation of the forecast return within the coming 12 months. The forecast return is the difference between the current price and our 12-month price target (the price target includes the projected dividend). The equity market has historically yielded a return of around 10% (the US equity market, for instance, yielded a return of 10% during the period 1902-2011). When we determine the recommendation for a share we use the 10% as an estimate of the return in the equity market. Since our recommendations are relative and risk-adjusted, it is possible to compare our recommendations across sectors and risk categories. In addition, the potential is stated in absolute terms via our price target. It should be borne in mind, however, that the recommendation is the anchor. A BUY recommendation will remain a BUY recommendation until changed, even if price increases have taken the price ‘too close’ to the price target. The future and historical returns estimated in the research report are stated as returns before costs since returns after costs depend on a number of factors relating to individual customer relations, custodian charges, volume of trade as well as market-, currency- and productspecific factors. It is not certain that the share will yield the stated expected future return/s. The stated expected future returns exclusively express our best assessment.
