jewellery journey an exhibition of the international internet project for jewellery designers jewellery journey International Internet Project for jewellery designers The idea of this project is the dialogue between international jewellery designers: a journey together through our world. The communication between the participants is based upon the Internet. The website of Jewellery Journey is the forum for the communication between the participants. On this website all letters, pictures, sketches and news are published. Thereby everyone has the possibility to watch and to participate in the process of the journey. The aim of Jewellery Journey is to gain new insights, experience and contacts. Each participant is invited to create a piece of work that is inspired from this dialogue. The first journey started October 15th 2002 and ended three months later. Participants from Finland, Germany, Belgium, Australia, Spain, Korea and South Africa travelled together through the world of jewellery. Most of these participants were already travelling, when Jewellery Journey began. There are exchange students and travellers who just came home or departed the next day. Seventeen travellers created over thirty jewellery objects inspired by this journey. The results are now shown in a travelling exhibition in every participant’s home country. The following “Pictures out of a suitcase” are a photographic interpretation of the theme. They show a selection from every participant’s work within the project. Deirdre Coleman, Johannesburg [email protected] Journey of transformation aluminium tin pulls, glass and plastic beads, silver catch I loved the idea of the jewellery journey project! This inspired me to try and use unconventional materials. I started to look around me at everyday objects. I eventually chose to work with aluminium tin pulls from tin cans as they are recognised worldwide. Another reason was the different colours of the tin pulls. At the moment in South Africa there is a competition with yellow tin pulls. This yellow colour sparked my imagination and I started experimenting and trying to collect as many tin pulls as I could. I had friends, family and even bars collecting for me! I decided to transform the tin pulls so that you do not immediately recognise them for what they really are. Claudia Küster, Berlin [email protected] Head over heels in Berlin silver, mirrors, acryl, glass, photographs The jewellery is a reflection in design of the architectonical situation, the materials and the traveller‘s impressions under- and overground during a journey with the berlin underground. The focal point has been lain on the two stations Potsdamer Platz and Gleisdreieck. Elisa Kaasinen, Lahti [email protected] Starmaps copper, silver My pieces of jewellery are built around the idea that everyone has a place called home, understood in one way or the other. A place where every journey starts from and where it ends to. It can be a one night journey or one that lasts for a life time. A trip in our own thoughts or a trip around the world. Still there is always a place where we belong more than anywhere. I created these two pieces to guide and to protect, as we are on a journey. There´s a small space inside, where one can put something to remind of the place where it all started from. On the sides of each piece there are engraved maps: Northern sky and the map of Europe on the other piece and a Chinese star map and the map of Asia on the other. There could be made one piece of jewellery, like these two, for every corner of the world. My idea was to create a feeling that home is never too far away. The stars in the night sky tell us the right direction, they either lead us forward on our journey or guide us back home. They are always there, the one thing that lasts forever. Bettina Bauer, Güstrow [email protected] Butterflies fibre foil, wool, steel wire, pvc-tube Sometimes I dream about butterflies. About how they move, how far they go or if they have a target. I have dreamt about being a butterfly. Especially on hot summer days I like the image of swinging my fragile wings through the air, to flatter with the wind and to land on a fragrant bloom. This dream is always a nice little journey. Katrin Arp, Hamburg [email protected] Networks silver, polyurethane Networks exist in endless varying forms and ways in our world. They seem to be one of the principles that organise life. My work is based upon the idea of a network that is more than the sum of its parts. The jewellery piece reminds of the fertility and power of networks. It is inspired by the process of linking in the Jewellery Journey. As a wearable item, it is a vehicle for the idea in close context to human - it is able to travel over the body of the wearer and to another body. Ralf Stautner, Barcelona [email protected] Immediacy material collage a provisional report of my work immediacy. hit by a moment. on my way I find a moment. the immediacy as language… no ! as material ! others use gold or silver. my material is immediacy. today I don´t know, what happened yesterday. the day after tomorrow will be unknown for me tomorrow. what is present? do weak moments exist in presence ? i give a shit ! “i demand, that we shut up, when we don´t have emotions anymore !” (andre breton) ? i demand, that we shut up, when we don´t have emotions anymore !! well… a provisional report. only. Alena Simon, Wismar [email protected] Charms silver, felt I am part of this journey, because I am a nomad deep inside. To travel is not only to go from one place to another -life is a journey – every day. I can travel inside myself with my own imagination. I don´t have a destination every time. Sometimes I jump into the unknown. Everyone who makes a journey sometimes needs something, that protects him at the trip. To be protected means that I feel better, more safe. And I need something that reminds me where I came from. The two charms give space to these ideas, wishes and imaginations. Ebony Satchwell, Sydney [email protected] Body route tyre, rubber tube, steel, brass, gold Walking along Bondi beach I was always fascinated by marks left in the sand by people‘s journeys, particularly those left by early morning vehicles. I love the order and repetition in tyre marks. This lead me to material investigation of used bike tyres which had had many journeys. Tyres are quite synonymous with journeys as they are an important component of many vehicles for travel. The strip of tyre repetitively curves and journeys across the body, reminiscent of roads and endless movement while the two circular rings contribute to the concept of continual movement. Ine-Moni Favache, Kessel-Lo [email protected] Bubblejewels silver, white and black feathers, textile, rockcrystal, peridot, onyx I´ve made threesome of „bubblejewels“. The black jewel reflects death. The white one is inner soul and birth. And the red one is the passion and love of life. It´s just my way to say that birth and dead without any passion in between, is a sad, sad story… It´s just my way to say: Please enjoy life you all!!! Outi Tolvanen, Lahti [email protected] Traveller worms bronze The point of my journey has began with living my life..so there will be some day when I really begin to travel in other countries... ...But first I have to beat my fear to meet people… …so my worms will help me with communication when the situation seems really scary to me… …They remind me of the power that I got inside. One wormring who wants to say hi to everybody One wormbrooch which loves to be on the shoulder One wormnecklace Britta Huntemann, Hamburg [email protected] E-motion photograms, synthetic foil Journey means to me movement – travelling is proceeding. When I go on a journey it always has great influence on my emotions and feelings. I translated these special feelings and emotions into experimental photographic works. The swings, movements and fluid transitions in the pictures are a visualisation of my experiences as a traveller. The jewellery pieces made with the photographs bring back the initial ideas to the wearer – the traveller. Steffi Mayer, Berlin [email protected] Rings from Berlin to Korea silver, paper While thinking about travelling in general I realised that there are certain things that accompanied every single one of my journeys: Postcards, photographs, traveller guides, maps… All these items are made of paper. I decided to use this material for my jewellery. I was looking forward to get to know the different experiences of the people who take part at the project. Therefore I tried to keep the contact to all of them to get some insights in the different ways of travelling. I asked them to send me paper from their journeys or from their home region. So I received material that recites stations of a journey in form of tickets, brochures and so on- like a journey patchwork. It also tells a story about the traveller. I know now, for example, that Hamburg is a vivid town with many cultural events and exhibitions that is gripping for some people - Katti told me. And I learnt about Britta that she goes many times by train from Berlin to Hamburg to Wismar to Berlin to Wismar to Hamburg..it seems to be an important circle in her life. These kind of stories are what I like to tell with my “Rings from Berlin to Korea.” Ines Haselhuhn, Pforzheim [email protected] Eine Reise ins Blaue lightblue felt, freshwater pearls, white felt This Jewellery visually manifests my original aim from the beginning of our jewelleryjourney project of placing materials which originally come from the human body, like teeth or hair, on parts of the human body where they usually do not belong. I have been working with the material in different ways and changed it. In the end a hairy material has been created jewellery that looks like something human. Delfin Claes, Düsseldorf [email protected] Made in Germany paper, plastic, metal badges Make it pink. Let people think. My jewellery journey is a real one. I´ve actually travelled to another country to enhance my knowledge of jewellery and the craftmanship to make it. Although Germany is only across one border, the cultural differences are huge. At first I was struck by the huge pressence of kitch in German society. It was as if the world stopped in the repugnend eighties here. In almost every thing. Only a foreigner can see it, but even he or her not for long. While everybody in the end gets adapted. I wanted to use this kitchy thing that Germany has to emphasise my journey. To point out that 400 kilometers to the east makes a real world of differences. So I started to collect images of what makes Germany so kitchy. Untill I came across a cat. And this one really was the reincarnation of Hitler. When I saw him, he looked at me, with this crazed look in his eyes. That made me think. Let me explain what I thought. Many young Germans still feel guilty for what their ancesters did in the second world war. They are unwilling to talk or laugh about this. For me, laughing is a way to come to terms with my self. So I thought, why not use this odd cat and make real Germany-souvenir badges with history, humor and kitch. Nane Adam, Wismar [email protected] Connection lines silver, stretch magic These bridges built from my idol Santiago Calatrava have given me the inspiration for making jewellery. Even those bridges make a connection from town to town and from land to land like our “travelling”. So is my interpretation for “travelling”. The flight-lines that are connected to the countries. The streets that are connected to the towns and the paths that are connected to the friends and neighbors. The swing bridges from Calatrava have a lot of steel cables. So I have wrapped my product of jewellery with thin lines. Youra Kim, Seoul [email protected] Ivory work ivory About 4 years ago I have gotten some pieces of ivory from a friend of mine. I don´t know where the ivory came from. Maybe from Africa… The ivory has certainly a long journey whether it wanted or not. What was the ivory´s journey? But I got some reproaches from another people, because I worked with the ivories. You know…the ivory-story… The people said to me, that I should not use the ivory. I had to discuss with them about it and sometimes the discussion was hard. I became doubt. I needed many times to overcome the reproaches. I thought too, that I should change my material. I have tried bone too. But it was a pity for me, that I put my ivory in a box again. It is a beautiful material. For me…The life is a journey…a Korean poet said, when he died…“I had a good trip in the world“ for him the life is a short trip…So…I took some material that had been living in the world. I didn´t want to show with the material, what I want to show. I tried to show what the material wants to show…So…I searched, what I can make with the material and how… Karola Torkos, Halle [email protected] Reisen und Raum blackened silver Undertaking a journey for me is to move in a room (car, ship, plane, railway…) from one place to another. I depart and arrive at a place ….or to myself. My brooches are the first trial to find signs for places. – Outlines, medieval castles, borders (the own or the foreign ones). One endless, complete band. I start running, get away from the starting point and suddenly I arrive at this point again. It is this kind of journey, that we call Life, hourly, daily, monthly, yearly.
