SWISS FILMS moving movies
SWISS FILMS Info reports on successful showing of Swiss films in cinemas, at important foreign
festivals and in international appraisals. The annual – and thus comparable – review by SWISS FILMS
illustrates facts and figures on the past year and takes a look ahead to the current year. The promotional agency SWISS FILMS works towards creating awareness of Swiss filmmaking and its international success, is present in major film markets, communicates information on Swiss filmmaking in
its entire width, and uses reviews and theme programmes to illustrate European and global relations
and developments. As film series frequently involve long-term cooperation with foreign partners and
are based on sustainability, this issue offers a longer-term insight into the film programmes initiated
by SWISS FILMS over the last five years. The journalist Brigitte Häring visited a project in Beijing and
reports on the dialogue between Swiss and Chinese cineastes.
In 2010, SWISS FILMS actively supported the distribution of 20 fiction films, 40 documentaries and
50 short films. The promotional agency granted some 60 films funds for participation in a festival, 18
international cinema premieres were supported. In addition to this international promotional work,
SWISS FILMS strengthened awareness within Switzerland through effective public relations events:
Through the “Appellations Suisse” series at the film festival in Locarno which posted an increase of
36% in visitors, the Short Film Night Tour and through the Swiss Film Prize «Quartz».

Le présent SWISS FILMS Info vous offre une vue sur les succès du cinéma suisse en salle, dans
les importants festivals à l’étranger et dans sa diffusion internationale. L’inventaire annuel – par
conséquent comparable – des chiffres et événements clés de l’année dernière se projette également
dans l’année en cours. L’agence de promotion SWISS FILMS mise sur la perception, dans toute son
envergure, du cinéma suisse et de ses succès internationaux. Elle est présente dans les grands marchés du cinéma et établit, à l’échelon de l’Europe et du monde entier, des liens et des courants de
la cinématographique helvétique à travers des rétrospectives et des programmes thématiques. Dans
la mesure où de tels programmes comportent souvent des engagements à longs termes avec des
partenaires et sont conçus pour durer, nous vous offrons au sein de cette brochure un aperçu plus
large dans le temps des programmes initiés par SWISS FILMS au cours des cinq dernières années. La
journaliste Brigitte Häring a participé à l’un des projets à Pékin et décrit dans ce numéro le dialogue
entre cinéastes suisses et chinois.
En 2010, SWISS FILMS a soutenu activement la diffusion de 20 longs métrages de fiction, de 40
documentaires et de 50 courts métrages. Des contributions pour la participation à des festivals ont
été accordées à environ 60 films et 18 sorties en salle à l’étranger ont été encouragées. A côté de
cette promotion internationale, SWISS FILMS a renforcé la perception du cinéma helvétique en Suisse
avec des événements médiatisés, tels que la sélection Appellations Suisse au festival de Locarno,
dont les entrées ont augmenté de 36%, la Tournée de la Nuit du Court métrage et le Prix du Cinéma
Suisse «Quartz».
Ein erfolgreicher Auftritt Schweizer Filme in Kinos, an bedeutenden ausländischen Festivals und in
der internationalen Auswertung zeigt sich Ihnen im SWISS FILMS Info. Die jährliche – und damit vergleichbare – Bestandsaufnahme von SWISS FILMS beleuchtet Facts und Figures zum vergangenen
Jahr und wirft bereits einen Blick auf das laufende. Die Promotionsagentur SWISS FILMS setzt sich
für die Wahrnehmung des Schweizer Filmschaffens und seinen internationalen Erfolg ein, tritt an
grossen Filmmärkten auf, vermittelt Informationen über das Schweizer Filmschaffen in seiner ganzen
Breite und zeigt mit Retrospektiven und thematischen Programmen europa- und weltweit Bezüge
und Strömungen auf. Da Filmreihen häufig ein langfristiges Engagement mit ausländischen Partnern
beinhalten und auf Nachhaltigkeit angelegt sind, geben wir Ihnen in diesem Heft einen zeitlich weiter
gefassten Einblick in die von SWISS FILMS initiierten Filmprogramme der letzten fünf Jahre. Die
Journalistin Brigitte Häring hat ein Projekt in Peking besucht und schreibt über den Dialog zwischen
Schweizer und chinesischen Cineasten.
SWISS FILMS hat 2010 aktiv den Vertrieb von 20 Spiel-, 40 Dokumentar- und 50 Kurzfilmen unterstützt. Rund 60 Filmen gewährte die Promotionsagentur Beiträge für eine Festivalteilnahme, 18
Kinostarts im Ausland wurden unterstützt. Neben dieser internationalen Promotion verstärkte SWISS

The previous year’s upward trend for attendance figures in Swiss cinemas did not continue in 2010. With
approximately 15 million admissions, the decline in
attendance figures amounts to 3.53% – tribute of
the seventh art to the Football World Cup in South
Africa. Contrary to this trend, however, Swiss film
productions and coproductions gained solid ground
with the sale of approximately 880’298 tickets and
5.82% share of the market. Attendance figures in
the previous year were recorded at 551’003 viewers and 3.11%. With “Avatar” as the number one
hit at the box office most often screened in 3-D,
digital cinema has also increased in Switzerland:
142 of the 558 screens are now equipped for digital projections, having nearly tripled within a year.

La tendance à l’augmentation de la fréquentation
dans les salles suisses, enregistrée l’année précédente, ne s’est pas poursuivie en 2010. Avec quelque 15 millions d’entrées, la baisse est de 3.53% –
tribut du septième Art au Mondial du foot en Afrique
du Sud. Contrairement à cette évolution, les films
et coproductions suisses augmentent fortement
avec 880’298 entrées comptabilisées et une part
de marché de 5.82%. L’année d’avant, les chiffres
étaient de 551’003 spectateurs et 3.11% de part
de marché. Avec le film préféré du public «Avatar»,
majoritairement projeté en 3D, la marche triomphale
de la numérisation des salles se poursuit en Suisse:
désormais, 142 écrans (sur 558) sont équipés pour
une projection numérique, ce qui correspond quasiment à un triplement en l’espace d’une année.

Schweizer Filme und Koproduktionen mit 880’298
verbuchten Eintritten und 5.82% Marktanteil stark zu.
Im Vorjahr lagen die Werte bei 551’003 Zuschauern
und 3.11%. Mit dem zumeist in 3D-Projektion vorgeführten Spitzenreiter «Avatar» legt auch in der
Schweiz die Kinodigitalisierung zu: 142 von 558
Leinwänden sind nunmehr für digitale Projektionen
ausgerüstet, was beinahe einer Verdreifachung in
Jahresfrist entspricht.

With the sale of more than 140’000 tickets, the
Alpine thriller “Sennentuntschi” was last year’s
most successful Swiss film. The director of the film,
Michael Steiner, had already dominated the box
office in 2005 with “Mein Name ist Eugen” and in
2006 with “Grounding.” The film “La petite chambre”
by Stéphanie Chuat and Véronique Reymond, which
was honoured twice with the Swiss Film Prize
«Quartz 2011», recorded some 75’000 admissions,
while Sophie Heldman’s debut film “Satte Farben
vor Schwarz,” which premiered in San Sebastian,
attained sales of nearly 50’000 tickets. The production volume was high with 25 fiction films, whereby
significantly fewer coproductions were realised
with neighbouring countries in 2010 – only six films
compared with eleven in the previous year.

Suisse «Quartz 2011», marque les esprits avec
près de 75’000 entrées, tandis que le premier film

Véronique Reymond reüssiert mit seinen rund 75’000
Eintritten, während der in San Sebastian uraufgeführte Erstlingsfilm «Satte Farben vor Schwarz» von
Sophie Heldman auf fast 50’000 Eintritte kommt.
Das Produktionsvolumen ist mit 25 Spielfilmen
hoch, wobei 2010 mit nur sechs Filmen – gegenüber

2010 was an extraordinary year for Swiss documentary films: 39 films were produced and released
in the cinema, ten of these exceeded the 10’000
mark, and the share of the total number of admissions for Swiss film productions amounted to 39%.
With “Aisheen (Still Alive In Gaza)” by Nicolas
Wadimoff and “Daniel Schmid – Le chat qui pense”
by Benny Jaberg and Pascal Hoffmann in Berlin,
together with “Cleveland Versus Wall Street” by
Jean-Stéphane Bron in Cannes, the international
attention for Swiss documentary films is indeed
certain. Documentary films also scored in the first
half of 2011, be it in the cinema, like “Arme Seelen”
(The Revenants) by Edwin Beeler and “Hoselupf”
by This Lüscher, or the film “Mit dem Bauch
durch die Wand” by Anka Schmid at the Berlinale.
2010 est un millésime exceptionnel pour les documentaires helvétiques: 39 films sont produits et
sortent en salle, dix d’entre eux dépassent la barre
des 10’000 entrées et la part du documentaire sur
le total des entrées pour les films suisses se situe à

Swiss short film productions have held their ground
on a worldwide scale. They were present at the
major short and animation film festivals and also
screened in film sections at A-festivals. Some 204
short films were screened at festivals in 2010.
Seventy-two short film productions – 20 of which
were animation films – won awards. Monetary
prizes for short films – amounting to a total of
261’000 CHF – made up 59% of the awards for
Swiss film productions. The most successful film
productions were the fiction film “Yuri Lennon’s
Landing On Alpha 46” by Anthony Vouardoux and the
animation film “Miramare” by Michaela Müller – both
of which were awarded the «Quartz 2011» – as well
as the animation film “Schlaf” (Sleep) by Claudius
Gentinetta and Frank Braun. Most notably, the
film “Ich bin’s Helmut” (It’s Me Helmut) by Nicolas
Steiner has been selected for over 70 festivals since
November 2009 and emerged as a festival favourite,
convincing audiences and juries alike. According to
the short film magazine shortfilm.de, the film ranks
among the ten short films most frequently awarded
throughout the world in 2010.
Les courts métrages suisses s’affirment fortement à
l’international. Ils sont présents dans les principaux
festivals du court métrage et du film d’animation
ainsi que dans les sections dédiées au court des
grands festivals A. 204 courts métrages participent
à des festivals en 2010. 72 films – parmi lesquels 20
animations – obtiennent des prix. Les récompenses
engrangées par des courts métrages – au total
261’000 CHF – représentent 59% des montants
attribués à des productions suisses. Les films qui
recueillent le plus grand succès sont le film de
science-fiction «Yuri Lennon’s Landing on Alpha 46»
de Anthony Vouardoux et l’animation «Miramare»
de Michaela Müller – tous deux lauréats du «Quartz
2011» – ainsi que le film d’animation «Schlaf» de
Claudius Gentinetta et Frank Braun. Le court métrage de fiction «Ich bin’s Helmut» de Nicolas Steiner,
projeté dans plus de 70 festivals internationaux
depuis novembre 2009, est un devenu le favori des
festivals, convainquant public et jurys. Il fait partie
des dix courts métrages qui, selon le magazine
shortfilm.de, ont remporté le plus de prix dans le
monde en 2010.
Schweizer Kurzfilme behaupten sich weltweit. Sie

Produktionen aus. Die erfolgreichsten Filme sind der
Spielfilm «Yuri Lennon’s Landing on Alpha 46» von
Anthony Vouardoux und die Animation «Miramare»
von Michaela Müller – beide mit dem «Quartz 2011»
ausgezeichnet – sowie der Animationsfilm «Schlaf»
von Claudius Gentinetta und Frank Braun. Vor allem
der seit November 2009 für über 70 Festivals ausgewählte «Ich bin’s Helmut» von Nicolas Steiner entwickelt sich zu einem Festivalliebling, der Publikum und
Jurys überzeugt. Er gehört zu den zehn Kurzfilmen,
die gemäss dem Kurzfilmmagazin shortfilm.de 2010
weltweit am häufigsten ausgezeichnet wurden.

SWISS FILMS has played an important role in the
overall organisation of the Swiss Film Prize «Quartz»
since the prize was initiated in 1998. The 14th award
ceremony, held on March 12, 2011, for the third time
as a gala event in the KKL Luzern, is organised by the
Federal Office of Culture, SWISS FILMS and SRG SSR,
the latter having assumed the patronage. The prize
honours outstanding acting and cinematic achievements in nine categories and thus places Swiss
filmmaking in the limelight. The monetary prizes
awarded to the nominees amounted to CHF 425’000,
and film producer Marcel Hoehn was presented the
Honorary Award this year for his lifetime achievement in film. As in the previous year, the Swiss Film
Academy played a central role in the nomination and
jury procedures in 2011. The SRG SSR television and
radio stations devoted Saturday evening to Swiss
filmmaking in the respective regional languages.
SWISS FILMS joue un rôle important dans l’organisation du Prix du Cinéma Suisse «Quartz» depuis sa
création en 1998. La 14e édition a lieu le 12 mars
2011 et pour la troisième fois au KKL Lucerne dans
le cadre d’un gala. Les organisateurs sont l’Office
fédéral de la culture, SWISS FILMS et la SRG SSR,
cette dernière assumant le patronage. La récompense honore des prestations cinématographiques
et d’interprétation extraordinaires dans neuf catégories et place le cinéma suisse sous les feux de
la rampe. Les nominés reçoivent des montants
d’une valeur globale de 425’000 CHF. Le producteur
Marcel Hoehn obtient le prix d’honneur pour l’ensemble de son œuvre. Comme l’année précédente,
l’Académie du Cinéma Suisse occupe un rôle central
dans la procédure des nominations et le choix des
lauréats. Les chaînes de télévision et de radio de la
SRG SSR consacrent la soirée du samedi à la création cinématographique helvétique.

73 Swiss film productions were invited to 37 major
international film festivals around the world in
2010. Special attention is given to participation at
festivals with a particularly high media presence
such as in Berlin, Cannes, Locarno and Sundance.
In order to increase the chances of being selected
and enable participation at a film festival, SWISS
FILMS develops activities and support throughout
the entire year: catalogues with the new Swiss
film productions are sent to more than 1’000 film
festivals, as well as DVD compilations featuring
short and animation films to specialised events.
Festival delegates are contacted at film markets,
and several are invited to Switzerland to view the
films. The range of services provided by SWISS
FILMS includes the purchase of subtitled film prints
and financial contributions for the participation of
Swiss film productions at festivals abroad, as well
as concrete advice on site.

festivals internationaux de cinéma importants dans
le monde. Une attention particulière est accordée
aux participations aux événements les plus médiatiques comme ceux de Berlin, Cannes, Locarno
et Sundance. Afin d’augmenter les chances d’une
sélection et de permettre la participation à un festival, SWISS FILMS déploie toute l’année des activités
et des mesures de soutien: des catalogues avec
les nouveaux films sont envoyés à plus de 1’000
festivals, des compilations DVD de courts métrages
et de films d’animation sont remises aux manifestations spécialisées dans ce genre. Des délégués
de festivals sont contactés à l’occasion de marchés
du film et quelques-uns parmi eux sont invités en
Suisse pour visionner des films. L’achat de copies
sous-titrées de films et des contributions à la participation de films suisses aux festivals à l’étranger
ainsi que le conseil donné sur place font partie de la
palette de prestations de SWISS FILMS.

Veranstaltungen. Festivaldelegierte werden an
Filmmärkten kontaktiert und einige unter ihnen
in die Schweiz eingeladen, um die Filme zu sichten. Der Ankauf von untertitelten Filmkopien und
Beiträge an die Beteiligung von Schweizer Filmen an
Festivals im Ausland sowie konkrete Beratung vor
Ort gehören zur Leistungspalette von SWISS FILMS.

The distribution of Swiss films abroad remains
at a high level. Since the middle of 2010, at least
15 fiction films and 14 documentary films have
established distributors or television timeslots in
one or several European countries, with some
in North America, Latin America or Asia as well.
Three documentary films – “Nel giardino dei suoni”
(In The Garden Of Sounds) by Nicola Bellucci,
“Cleveland Versus Wall Street” by Jean-Stéphane
Bron, and “Urs Fischer” by Iwan Schumacher –
have sparked interest among distributors in the
USA, and “Daniel Schmid – Le chat qui pense”
by Benny Jaberg and Pascal Hofmann in Japan.
Silvio Soldini’s “Cosa voglio di piu” (What More Do
I Want) and Jean-Luc Godard’s “Film Socialisme”
were sold the most worldwide. There was a slight
increase in the number of short films with world
sales compared with the previous year. Three years
after their release, the films “Auf der Strecke” (On
The Line) by Reto Caffi and “René” by Tobias Nölle
are distributed on such VoD platforms as mubi.com.
La distribution de films suisses à l’étranger se stabilise à un niveau élevé. En l’espace d’une année, 15
films de fiction et 14 documentaires trouvent une
distribution en salle ou une diffusion à la télévision
dans un ou plusieurs pays européens. Plusieurs
films sont également à voir en Amérique du Nord,
en Amérique latine et en Asie. Trois documentaires – «Nel giardino dei suoni» de Nicola Bellucci,
«Cleveland contre Wall Street» de Jean-Stéphane
Bron et «Urs Fischer» de Iwan Schumacher – ont
éveillé l’intérêt de distributeurs américains, alors
que «Daniel Schmid – Le chat qui pense» de Benny
Jaberg et Pascal Hofmann a suscité la curiosité du
Japon. Des ventes mondiales ont été réalisées pour
les films «Cosa voglio di più» de Silvio Soldini et
«Film Socialisme» de Jean-Luc Godard. Le nombre
de courts métrages qui ont été vendus à l’international a également légèrement augmenté. Trois
ans après leur première, des films comme «Auf der
Strecke» de Reto Caffi ou «René» de Tobias Nölle
sont diffusés sur des plateformes VoD, telles que
mubi.com.
Der Vertrieb von Schweizer Filmen im Ausland hält
sich auf hohem Niveau. Innerhalb eines Jahres

Programme mit Schweizer Filmen im Ausland
SWISS FILMS promotes works by individual filmmakers with Swiss film programmes at international
film festivals, art-house cinemas or film libraries.
These innovative programmes create links between
the current production and cinematographic heritage, as well as showcase the films in a thematic
or social context which goes beyond the individual
works, thereby enabling more insight into Swiss
filmmaking. Retrospectives and homages contribute
to the cineastes’ repute and arouse the interest in
their most recent works. In close collaboration with
partners abroad, SWISS FILMS prepares some 25
programmes every year. The recent focus has been
on China and Latin America. These activities relating to film culture contribute to developing networks
among filmmakers, the film industry and media.

Avec des programmes de film, SWISS FILMS met
en valeur des cinéastes suisses singuliers et leurs
œuvres. Ces programmes innovants montrés dans
des festivals de cinéma, au sein de cinémas d’art
et essai ou dans des cinémathèques, établissent
des liens entre la production actuelle et le patri
moine cinématographique. Ils placent les films
dans un contexte thématique ou sociétal dépassant chaque œuvre et permettent une confrontation avec la création cinématographique helvétique.
Des rétrospectives et des hommages contribuent
à la réputation de cinéastes et éveillent l’intérêt
pour leurs futures créations. En étroite collaboration avec des partenaires étrangers, SWISS FILMS
conçoit chaque année quelque 25 programmes.
Ces dernières années, des accents sont mis sur des
territoires comme la Chine et l’Amérique latine. Les
activités culturelles liées au cinéma contribuent à
établir des réseaux entre cinéastes, représentants
de l’industrie cinématographique et des médias.

bekannt. Innovative Programme an Filmfestivals,
in Programmkinos oder Cinematheken schaffen
Bezüge zwischen der gegenwärtigen Produktion
und dem filmischen Erbe. Sie stellen die Filme in
einen thematischen oder gesellschaftlichen Kontext,
der über die einzelnen Werke hinausweist und
eine vertiefte Beschäftigung mit dem helvetischen
Filmschaffen ermöglicht. Retrospektiven und Hom
magen tragen zum Renommee von Cineasten
bei und wecken das Interesse für ihre neusten
Werke. In enger Zusammenarbeit mit ausländischen
Partnern konzipiert SWISS FILMS jährlich rund 25
Programme. Schwerpunkte werden in jüngster Zeit
in China und in Lateinamerika gesetzt. Die filmkulturellen Aktivitäten tragen dazu bei, Netzwerke
von Filmschaffenden, Industrievertreter/innen und
Medienschaffenden aufzubauen.

Swiss film caravan
in arab countries 2008-2009
At a time before the Arab Spring had emerged,
there was a tremendous surge of interest in foreign film programmes. At that time, the Swiss film
caravan toured through Syria, Jordan, Egypt, with
stops in Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Latakia, Cairo
and Amman. New Swiss film productions were
screened with directors Stina Werenfels, Richard
Dindo and Fredi M. Murer in attendance – as well as
actresses Monika Niggeler and Heidi Maria Glössner
who had starred in the successful comedy “Die
Herbstzeitlosen” (Late Bloomers).

The reason for the focus on the two Latin American
countries is to mark the 200th anniversary of independence in Argentina and Chile. Film programmes*
have been showcased at major festivals throughout the region: in 2010 the Buenos Aires Festival
Internacional de Cine Independiente BAFICI devoted
a retrospective to Peter Liechti, and then to Thomas
Imbach and Daniel Schmid in 2011. The Muestra
Doc Buenos Aires screened Swiss documentary
films with a world vision. The Santiago Festival
Internacional de Cine SANFIC and the Festival de
Cine de Valdivia will highlight the young generation of Swiss filmmakers, with particular focus on
Lionel Baier, while the Festival Internacional de
Documental in Santiago pays tribute to works by
Richard Dindo.

Dans le cadre du programme «Swiss Chinese
Explorations»*, SWISS FILMS a réalisé des projets
avec tous les festivals indépendants et a célébré
à deux reprises une grande présence suisse au
Festival international du film de Shanghai. La rencontre avec les festivals indépendants a conduit
à un échange intense avec des documentaristes
de renom et à des hommages rendus dans les
domaines de la fiction, du film expérimental et du
court métrage des années 2006 à 2009 (voir article
page 24).

In conjunction with the “Swiss Chinese Explorations”*
cultural exchange programme, SWISS FILMS has
carried out projects with all of the independent festivals and celebrated a strong presence with a focus
on Switzerland twice at the Shanghai International
Film Festival. Working together with independent
festivals has led to an intensive exchange with
eminent documentary filmmakers and homages to
artistically outstanding works in experimental and
short film productions, as well as outstanding films
from the years 2006-2009 (cf. article on p. 22).

Swiss and Chinese cineastes in dialogue
Since SWISS FILMS launched the “Swiss Chinese Explorations” project in 2008, valuable synergies have developed
on several levels. A visit to the SWISS FILMS project in Beijing. By Brigitte Häring
It’s getting late on this evening in April 2011 at
the CCD Workstation, in Caochangdi, an artist and
gallery village on the edge of Beijing. Some 40
people are sitting in a room that also functions as
the library, seminar and screening room: filmmakers, guests, the head of the CCD Workstation Wu
Wenguang and Swiss film director Anka Schmid. Her
film “Magic Matterhorn,” a documentary film from
1995, has just been screened.
A lengthy, passionate and heated debate in Chinese
and English – interpreters are present to facilitate
the communication – has unfurled until the early
morning hours. The discussion is about the meaning of the term “homeland”, about the different
viewpoints concerning homeland among the diverse
cultural backgrounds, and the similarities. Anka
Schmid has travelled to Beijing to present her films
here in the CCD Workstation and to conduct a workshop with eleven young Chinese filmmakers as participants, held in conjunction with the May Festival.
The “Filmmaker in Focus” project is one of the cultural exchange programmes in China which SWISS
FILMS launched in 2008 in conjunction with “Swiss
Chinese Explorations.”* In October 2008 Peter
Liechti was the first Swiss film director to travel to
Beijing, carrying several of his films in his suitcase.
Since then this exchange has taken place twice a
year – either during the May Festival in spring or
during the Crossing Festival in autumn.
Here on the edge of Beijing, the well-known Chinese
documentary filmmaker Wu Wenguang has created
a place where Chinese filmmakers can live while
working on their film projects. Anyone who stays
here and participates in one of the Swiss workshops
experiences firsthand what such a cultural exchange
can really mean. There is a pronounced culture of
debate in China. Long, candid and differentiated
statements are delivered; films – both Chinese and
Swiss – are screened, analysed, disassembled and
compared with one’s own work. Moreover, such
discussions are not limited to the scheduled times
of the workshop; they are held everywhere in the
Workstation, during the breaks, in the courtyard
and especially in the kitchen. The kitchen, says Wu
Wenguang at the end of an intense week, is just
as important as the seminar room – you can only
understand the work and the thought processes of
others if you live and eat together.
The semi-annual workshop conducted with Swiss
filmmakers is just one of the focal points in China
managed by Sabina Brocal at SWISS FILMS. The
workshops in the relatively placid setting in the
Workstation seem to be the antithesis to the major
Swiss presence at the Shanghai International Film
Festival in 2008 and 2009. The focus on Switzerland
at such a festival, which ranks among the A-festivals,
offers maximum international attention for Swiss
filmmaking. By now excellent contacts have been
established with a whole range of festivals in
China. This not only provides individual Swiss film
directors with an international platform, but also
draws international attention to Swiss filmmaking in
general. Young talent can also be promoted in this
manner: for example, in 2009 Switzerland was able
to present films by younger and relatively unknown
filmmakers at the China Independent Film Festival
in Nanjing. And the promising Swiss film talents
were able to gain initial international appreciation
for their works.

But sometimes it is not all that easy to keep a
programme running in China. During the first week
of May in 2011, directly after Anka Schmid’s workshop, the Documentary Film Festival China should
have been held in the artist village of Song Zhuang,
also on the edge of Beijing. Collaboration with the
festival had begun the year before, and Swiss film
productions were supposed to be screened again
this year. But it was cancelled at short notice
because the pressure from the board of censors on
the independent festival had become too great. And
it probably won’t be held in the future either. These
are the unpleasant, alarming and also exasperating moments of such a multifaceted and otherwise
fruitful project in China.
Back to the workshop in the Caochangdi art village: Anka Schmid’s film “Mit dem Bauch durch
die Wand” premiered there on the last evening,
three days prior to the film’s theatrical release in
Switzerland. It’s another late evening, the room is
full and discussions after the film are intense.
The CCD Workstation is a place where creativity can
actually be felt in the air, an infectious passion for
art. However, films are not the only thing produced
here. There is also a competence centre for Chinese
subtitling, and very successful dance and theatre
productions – led by Wu Wenguang’s partner Wen
Hui – are performed here. And it is not uncommon
to find people on stage who would otherwise shoot
films – and vice versa. This desire to forge on, to
continue working on art from early morning until
late in the night, be it filmmaking or work on the
stage, this passion is palpable and contagious here.
This is vouched for by all of the Swiss filmmakers
who have already been involved in the exchange:
Peter Liechti explained that he had never before
experienced such intense and candid discussions
about his films. Fernand Melgar wrote in a report
on his stay: “I believe that I received just as much,
if not more, as I was able to offer to this young generation.” And Anka Schmid observed very different
approaches to making a film: when young Chinese
filmmakers have something to tell, first the story
is narrated, filmed and shown. All techniques, all
formal aspects, all theories come afterwards. It’s
exactly the opposite in Switzerland. On top of all the
theory and technique, young filmmakers sometimes
lose sight of the goal of telling their own story. This
experience has had a real impact on her, and the
filmmaker is certain that it will influence her work
in the future.
It is evident throughout the entire workshop how
lasting and fruitful such cultural exchange programmes are and how they promote Swiss filmmaking abroad: young Chinese participants frequently
speak about Swiss filmmakers who have already
been here. They speak not only about the films,
but also about the people they have come to know
and appreciate, the friends – and sometimes even
project partners – they have become.

Il est tard en cette soirée d’avril 2011, dans la CCD
Workstation de Caochangdi, un village d’artistes et
de galeries en banlieue de Pékin. 40 personnes sont
assises dans une salle qui sert à la fois de bibliothèque, de salle de séminaires et de salle de conférences: cinéastes, invités intéressés, Wu Wenguang, le
directeur de la Workstation, et la réalisatrice Anka
Schmid. Ils viennent d’assister à la projection du film
de cette dernière, «Magic Matterhorn», un documentaire réalisé en 1995.
Jusqu’aux premières heures du jour, une longue
discussion, intense et passionnée, s’engage sur la
notion de «patrie», sur les différentes conceptions
que recouvre ce mot dans les diverses cultures
et sur les points communs; on parle chinois et
anglais – des interprètes facilitent la compréhension. Anka Schmid a fait le voyage jusqu’à Pékin,
pour accompagner la projection de ses films dans
la CCD Workstation et y conduire, dans le cadre du
May Festival, un atelier auquel onze jeunes cinéastes
chinois participent.
Le projet «Filmmaker in Focus» fait partie des programmes prioritaires en Chine, lancés par SWISS
FILMS en 2008, au moment où l’agence de promotion
s’engageait dans «Swiss Chinese Explorations»*.
En octobre 2008, Peter Liechti a été le premier
cinéaste à se rendre à Pékin en qualité d’enseignant,
avec dans ses bagages quelques-uns de ses films.
Depuis, ces échanges se renouvellent tous les six
mois – soit lors du May Festival au printemps, soit
lors du Crossing Festival en automne.
Sous la direction de Wu Wenguang, le célèbre
documentariste chinois, un centre s’est développé
dans la banlieue de Pékin, où des cinéastes chinois
peuvent vivre et travailler durant l’élaboration de
leurs projets. Ceux qui y séjournent et participent à
un atelier suisse ont l’occasion de faire l’expérience
concrète de ce que représentent les échanges culturels. La Chine pratique une culture de la discussion
prononcée. Les prises de parole sont longues, sincères et différenciées, chaque film projeté – chinois
ou suisse – est analysé, décortiqué et comparé au
travail personnel de chacun. Et les participants ne
se contentent pas de discuter pendant le temps
alloué aux ateliers: ils discutent de cinéma partout
dans la Workstation, durant les pauses, dans la cour
et, surtout, dans la cuisine. La cuisine, affirme Wu
Wenguang à la fin d’une semaine intense, est tout
aussi importante que la salle de séminaires – seuls
ceux qui partagent le gîte et le couvert sont à même
de se comprendre et de comprendre le travail et la
pensée des autres.
L’atelier réalisé tous les six mois avec des cinéastes suisses n’est que l’une des priorités fixées en
Chine par SWISS FILMS, sous la direction de Sabina
Brocal. Les ateliers studieux qui se déroulent dans la
Workstation font en quelque sorte contrepoids aux
grandes manifestations organisées en 2008 et 2009
au Shanghai International Film Festival, qui compte
parmi les festivals de première catégorie. Que la
Suisse soit présente à ce genre de festivals focalise
l’intérêt du monde sur son cinéma. Depuis, SWISS
FILMS entretient de très bonnes relations avec les
divers festivals de Chine, ce qui non seulement permet à des réalisatrices et réalisateurs suisses de se
faire connaître internationalement, mais aussi attire
l’attention générale sur la création cinématographique de Suisse. Ainsi, de jeunes talents peuvent
également être encouragés: par exemple, en 2009,

la Suisse a présenté au Festival indépendant de
Chine à Nanjing les films de jeunes metteurs en
scène encore inconnus. Et ces jeunes cinéastes
talentueux et prometteurs y ont reçu les premiers
signes de reconnaissance internationale.
Il n’est pas toujours facile de maintenir un programme en Chine. Durant la première semaine
de mai 2011, juste après l’atelier animé par Anka
Schmid, le Festival du film documentaire de Chine
aurait dû se dérouler dans le village d’artistes de
Songzhuang, également situé en banlieue pékinoise.
La collaboration avec ce festival avait démarré
l’an dernier, et il était prévu d’y montrer des films
suisses cette année aussi. Malheureusement, il a
été annulé au dernier moment, la censure exercée
par les autorités étant devenue trop lourde pour
ce festival indépendant. Il est à craindre qu’il ne
connaisse pas de nouvelle édition à l’avenir. Ce sont
les moments déplaisants, angoissants, irritants
aussi, de ce travail de projet en Chine, autrement
riche et fructueux.
Revenons à l’atelier du Caochangdi Art Village: le
dernier soir, le film d’Anka Schmid, «Mit dem Bauch
durch die Wand», est projeté en première, trois jours
avant sa sortie dans les salles suisses. La soirée se
prolonge à nouveau, la salle est pleine à craquer et
les entretiens animés après la projection du film.
La CCD Workstation est un endroit où la créativité
semble véritablement flotter dans l’air, c’est comme
une passion contagieuse pour l’art. L’on y produit
pas seulement des films, c’est aussi un centre de
compétence pour le sous-titrage en chinois et –
sous la direction de Wen Hui, la partenaire de Wu
Wenguang – pour des spectacles de danse et de
théâtre à succès. Il n’est pas rare de voir sur la
scène des gens qui, le reste du temps, tournent des
films, et vice-versa. Ce désir de continuer coûte que
coûte, de s’approprier l’art, sous toutes ses formes,
cinéma ou théâtre, et d’y travailler pratiquement
de l’aube jusque tard dans la nuit, est ici sensible
et communicatif. C’est ce dont témoignent tous les
cinéastes suisses qui ont eu l’occasion d’y séjourner: Peter Liechti raconte que, jamais auparavant,
il n’avait pris part à des discussions aussi intenses
et authentiques sur ses films. Fernand Melgar écrit
dans le rapport sur son séjour: «Je pense avoir
reçu autant, si ce n’est pas plus, que ce que j’ai pu
donner à cette jeune génération.» Et Anka Schmid
a constaté combien l’approche d’un film est différente: lorsque les jeunes cinéastes chinois ont quelque chose à raconter, par exemple, ils racontent,
ils filment, ils montrent. Tout ce qui est technique,
formel, théorique vient ensuite. En Suisse, c’est
exactement le contraire et, aveuglés par la théorie
et la technique, les jeunes cinéastes perdent quelquefois de vue leur objectif, qui est de raconter leur
histoire. Cette observation l’a beaucoup marquée et
aura, la cinéaste en est persuadée, une influence
sur ses futures réalisations.
Pendant toute la durée de l’atelier, on perçoit
combien les programmes par pays de ce type sont
fertiles et durables et combien ils contribuent à faire
connaître le cinéma suisse à l’étranger: les jeunes
Chinoises et Chinois parlent souvent des cinéastes
suisses qui leur ont rendu visite. Ils ne parlent pas
seulement des films, mais aussi des hommes et des
femmes dont ils ont fait la connaissance et qu’ils
estiment, ceux qui sont devenus des amis et, quelquefois, des partenaires de projets.

Schweizer und chinesische Cineasten im Dialog
Seit SWISS FILMS 2008 das Projekt «Swiss Chinese Explorations» startete, haben sich auf mehreren Ebenen
fruchtbare Synergien entwickelt. Besuch beim SWISS FILMS-Projekt in Peking. Von Brigitte Häring
Es ist spät geworden, an diesem Abend im April
2011 in der CCD Workstation, in Caochangdi, einem
Künstler- und Galeriedorf am Rande Pekings. In
einem Raum, der zugleich Bibliothek, Seminarund Vorführraum ist, sitzen ungefähr 40 Leute:
Filmschaffende, interessierte Gäste, der Leiter der
Workstation, Wu Wenguang, und die Schweizer
Regisseurin Anka Schmid. Soeben ist ihr Film «Magic
Matterhorn» vorgeführt worden, ein Dokumentarfilm
aus dem Jahr 1995.
Auf Chinesisch und Englisch – Dolmetscher helfen
bei der Verständigung – entspinnt sich bis in die
frühen Morgenstunden eine lange, leidenschaftliche
und heisse Diskussion über den Begriff «Heimat»,
über unterschiedliche Vorstellungen von Heimat in
den verschiedenen Kulturkreisen und über Gemeinsamkeiten. Anka Schmid ist nach Peking gereist, um
hier in der CCD Workstation ihre Filme zu zeigen und
einen Workshop zu leiten, der im Rahmen des May
Festivals durchgeführt wird, und an dem elf chinesische Jungfilmerinnen und -filmer teilnehmen.
Das Projekt «Filmmaker in Focus» ist eines der
Schwerpunktprogramme in China, die SWISS FILMS
im Rahmen des 2008 gestarteten Engagements
«Swiss Chinese Explorations» ins Leben gerufen
hat.* Im Oktober 2008 konnte mit Peter Liechti der
erste Schweizer Regisseur als Tutor nach Peking
reisen, im Gepäck einige seiner Filme. Seither findet
dieser Austausch halbjährlich statt – entweder zum
May Festival im Frühling oder zum Crossing Festival
im Herbst.
Unter der Leitung des bekannten chinesischen
Dokumentarfilmers Wu Wenguang ist hier am Rande
Pekings ein Ort entstanden, an welchem chinesische
Filmschaffende während ihres Filmprojekts leben
und arbeiten können. Wer sich dort aufhält und an
einem der Schweizer Workshops teilnimmt, spürt,
was Kulturaustausch konkret bedeuten kann. In
China gibt es eine ausgeprägte Diskussionskultur.
Lange, ehrliche und differenzierte Statements werden abgegeben, die gezeigten Filme – die chinesischen und diejenigen aus der Schweiz – werden
analysiert, auseinandergenommen und mit der eigenen Arbeit verglichen. Und diskutiert wird nicht nur
während den festgelegten Zeiten des Workshops:
Über Film geredet wird in der Workstation überall,
in den Pausen, im Hof und vor allem auch in der
Küche. Die Küche, sagt Wu Wenguang am Ende einer
intensiven Woche, sei ein genauso wichtiger Ort wie
der Seminarraum – nur wer auch zusammen wohne
und esse, verstehe die Arbeit und das Denken des
Anderen.
Der halbjährlich durchgeführte Workshop mit
Schweizer Filmschaffenden ist nur einer der
Schwerpunkte in China, die unter der Leitung von
Sabina Brocal von SWISS FILMS durchgeführt
werden. Die Workshops im relativ beschaulichen
Rahmen der ruhigen Workstation wirken wie ein
Gegenpol zu den grossen Schweizer Auftritten am
Shanghai International Film Festival 2008 und 2009,
welches zu den A-Festivals zählt. Ein solcher Auftritt
bietet maximale internationale Aufmerksamkeit für
das Schweizer Filmschaffen. Zu ganz unterschiedlichen Festivals in China bestehen mittlerweile
gute Kontakte, die nicht nur den ausgewählten
Schweizer Regisseurinnen und Regisseuren helfen,
sich international zu präsentieren, sondern auch
dem Schweizer Filmschaffen allgemein internationale Aufmerksamkeit bringen. Auch junge Talente

können so gefördert werden: So konnte die Schweiz
zum Beispiel 2009 am unabhängigen Filmfestival
in Nanjing Filme von jüngeren und unbekannteren
Filmschaffenden präsentieren. Und die Erfolg versprechenden Schweizer Filmtalente konnten erste
internationale Anerkennung holen.
Manchmal aber ist es nicht ganz einfach, ein Pro
gramm in China aufrecht zu erhalten. In der ersten
Maiwoche 2011, direkt nach Anka Schmids Workshop,
hätte, ebenfalls am Rand Pekings, im Künstlerdorf
Songzhuang, das Documentary Film Festival China
stattfinden sollen. Die Zusammenarbeit mit dem
Festival war letztes Jahr gestartet, und erneut
sollten dieses Jahr Schweizer Filme gezeigt werden.
Dieses wurde jedoch kurzfristig abgesagt, der Druck
der Zensurbehörde auf das unabhängige Festival
war zu gross geworden. Es wird wohl in Zukunft
nicht mehr durchgeführt werden. Das sind unschöne, beängstigende und auch ärgerliche Momente
einer ansonsten so vielseitigen und fruchtbaren
Projektarbeit in China.
Zurück zum Workshop im Caochangdi Art Village:
Dort hat am letzten Abend Anka Schmids Film «Mit
dem Bauch durch die Wand» Premiere, drei Tage
vor dem Schweizer Kinostart. Wieder ist es spät
geworden, der Saal ist voll und die Gespräche nach
dem Film intensiv.
Die CCD Workstation ist ein Ort, an dem man die
Kreativität der Leute förmlich in der Luft spüren
kann, eine ansteckende Leidenschaft für die Kunst.
Hier werden nicht nur Filme produziert, hier ist ein
Kompetenzzentrum für chinesische Untertitelung,
und hier wird – unter der Leitung von Wu Wenguangs
Partnerin Wen Hui – auch sehr erfolgreich getanzt
und Theater gespielt. Und nicht selten stehen Leute
auf der Bühne, die sonst Filme drehen und umgekehrt. Diese Lust, immer weiter zu machen, sich die
Kunst, sei es nun Film oder Bühnenarbeit, richtiggehend von morgens früh bis weit in die Nacht zu
erarbeiten, diese Lust ist hier spürbar und steckt an.
Das bezeugen alle Schweizer Filmschaffenden, die
schon einmal hier sein durften: Peter Liechti erzählt,
er habe noch nie zuvor derart intensive und ehrliche
Gespräche über seine Filme führen können. Fernand
Melgar schreibt im Bericht über seinen Aufenthalt:
«Ich denke, dass ich ebenso viel, wenn nicht mehr,
bekommen habe, wie ich dieser jungen Generation
geben konnte.» Und Anka Schmid hat ganz unterschiedliche Herangehensweisen an einen Film beobachtet: Wenn die chinesischen Jungfilmerinnen und
-filmer etwas zu erzählen hätten, werde erst erzählt,
gefilmt, gezeigt. Alle Technik, alles Formale, jede
Theorie komme später. In der Schweiz sei es genau
umgekehrt, und bei aller Theorie und Technik verlieren hier junge Filmschaffende manchmal das Ziel
aus den Augen, etwas von sich zu erzählen. Diese
Beobachtung habe sie sehr geprägt und wird, da
ist sich die Filmemacherin sicher, in Zukunft einen
Einfluss auf ihre Arbeit haben.
Es ist während des ganzen Workshops zu spüren, wie
nachhaltig und fruchtbar solche Länderprogramme
sind und wie sie das Schweizer Filmschaffen im
Ausland bekannt machen: Die jungen Chinesinnen
und Chinesen erzählen oft von den Schweizer
Filmemachern, die schon dort waren. Nicht nur
von den Filmen erzählen sie, sondern auch von
den Menschen, die sie kennen und schätzen
gelernt haben, die Freunde und manchmal auch
Projektpartner geworden sind.
