Mannheim, Universitätsmedizin Mannheim, 2009. 271 S. I 37.95. Anonyme. Edition présentée par Alexandre Wenger. Grenoble, Editions Jérome Millon, 2011. 127 p. Ill. I 17. ISBN 978-2-84137-262-1 This is an edition of an anonymously published treatise against masturbation from 1830. In contrast to the new edition, the original version had indeed no title and did not allude to the “heinous sin”. It was not particularly successful but its 16 engravings showing the increasing decay of a young man seem to have enjoyed a certain dissemination. The introduction offers a well written description of our current understanding of the 18th and 19th century discussion on masturbation. The book may thus serve as a good introduction for students. Medical America in the Nineteenth Century. Readings from the Literature. Edited by Gert H. Brieger. Baltimore, The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2009. 338 p. £ 16. ISBN 978-0-8018-9268-4 This is a reprint of a collection of thirty papers, originally published in 1972. It has sections on medical education, literature, profession, practice, surgery, psychiatry, hospitals and hygiene, each of them briefly introduced. As most articles have been shortened, the collection is not suited for specialized research but primarily intended for students who wish to get a first general idea of 19th century American medicine. Given the ever growing amount of literature and Brieger’s still valuable introductions this book is a good first reader even almost 40 years after its first publication. 2010. 60 p. Ill. CHF 25. ISBN 978-92-890-2417-4 (printed version), 978-92-8980-2418-1 (electronic version) Rather than a history of the WHO Regional Office for Europe in the strict sense of the term, this small volume edited by the mentioned office, without any author’s name, should rather be classified in the category of the chronicle: a chronicle produced from inside by an institution, with all the well-known limits of the genre. The Regional Office for Europe, first established in Geneva, then in Copenhagen, is one of the six structures that were connected with the central organization. At the time of its foundation in 1949, it was in charge of improving the sanitary level of the European countries after WWII. Its original duty was rather quickly accomplished, and several tasks, means, scopes followed, as well as five directors from 1949 until today. Consequently, the small volume is divided in five chapters describing in a rather hagiographic way their lives and actions. Whether these directors embody or not the Regional Office, its history remains to be written. One can suppose that it will not be reduced to the simple accumulation of new programs and successive enlargements, such as they are listed here. The historian in charge of such a task will however find in this booklet a good basis for further research. Gesnerus 68 (2011) 143 Cheung, Tobias: Res vivens. Agentenmodelle organischer Ordnung 1600–1800, Freiburg i. Br., Rombach, 2008. 317 S. (Berliner Kulturwissenschaft, Bd. 8). I 48. (Passages). I 29. ISBN 978-2-204-08637-0 This is a collection of six essays concerned with the epistemological nature of discoveries of diseases and surgical procedures. It deals with 1. blood transfusion in the 17th century, 2. rhinoplasty from the 16th to the 18th century, 3. the first complete facial transplant in France 2006, 4. Patrick Manson’s contribution to the discovery of the mechanism of Malaria transmission, and 5. Rodolfo Robles’ discovery that river blindness is caused by infection by filaria volvulus. The sixth chapter is a reply to the critics of Delaporte’s book La maladie de Chagas (1999). The essays point to similarities in the adoption of concepts into foreign areas of knowledge but also show that each case asks for a specific epistemological explanation. Diniz Peixoto, Miriam Campolina: A saúde dos antigos. 144 Gesnerus 68 (2011) Gliboff, Sander: H. G. Bronn, Ernst Haeckel, and the Origins of German Darwinism. A Study in Translation and Transformation. Cambridge (MA), The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press, 2008. 260 p., $ 35.–./£ 24.95. Paris, Odile Jacob, 2007. 306 p. I 21,90. Menorca, Institut Menorquí d’Estudis, 2010. 184 p. Ill. (Col.leció Recerca, 18). I 22. Sabuco de Nantes Barrera, Oliva: The true medicine. Edited and translated by Gianna Pomata. Toronto, Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies, 2010. 267 p. (The Toronto Series, 4). $ 22.95. ISBN 978-0-7727-2067-2 An English translation of the Nueva filosofia de la naturaleza del hombre (1587) has already been published in 2007 but it contained much anachronistic terminology. Pomata’s much more careful new edition is based on a thorough knowledge of the medical and learned world of the time. The introduction focuses on four major aspects of this remarkable book: 1. it deals with the – still unanswered – question whether the book was written by Oliva Sabuco or her father, 2. it asks to what extent the book was innovative (showing that it mainly rejected the conventional hierarchy of organs and fluids), 3. it demonstrates The true medicine’s standpoint in the early modern discussion on the nature of the female body, and 4. it enlarges on the reception of the book in the 17th century. Baden, hier + jetzt, 2010. 223 S. Ill. CHF 38.–./I 24.80. I 38. ISBN 9-782763-786223 This book offers a comparative description of pharmacy in Lower Normandy and Canada in the 18th century. It examines the transfer of the French model of pharmacy on the institutional-professional, medico-therapeutical and socio-economic level. It contains chapters on the education of pharmacists, their dissemination, professional regulations, the pharmacist’s libraries as an evidence for their medical knowledge and thought, the stock of the pharmacies, examples of treatment, pharmacist-patient relation, the private life of pharmacists and their income. Each of these aspects is discussed as regards to France as well as to Canada. The author argues – among other things – that Canadian pharmacy developed certain specific characteristics because of different legislation, low density of population and lower incomes. I 19. ISBN 978-2-7535-0903-0 Cattle plague was the most important and harmful zoonosis in 18th and 19th century. It is, therefore, also well documented in contemporary descriptions, regulations and guides. Based on these sources, the book reconstructs the succession of incidents of cattle plague in the 18th and 19th century, mainly in France. It then continues to describe the sanitary measures taken or at least prescribed in regulations. Finally, it deals with treatment and prevention. The book argues that traditional ideas prevented progress, that a pragmatic and empiric approach after 1770, especially in Italy, England and the Netherlands led to new ideas of prevention which eventually helped veterinarians to establish themselves as interlocutors of the authorities and as a professional group.
