We ask this through Christ, our Lord, Amen World Cultural Diversity Day Help us take the steps you call us to take To build a more just community, Where difference is respected And where we can all join hands And rejoice in the common good. Through the mercy of God, we pray. Amen DEAR PARENTS/CARERS We have come to the end of a very busy half term. The examinations for our Year 11 and Sixth Form students are now well underway. It is hoped that the work and detailed preparation that has been put in by students, staff and parents/carers, will pay dividends on results day in August. Please find a sheet showing week 3 of the exams (after half term) at the back of this Newsletter. I wish all students the best of luck in the ensuing examinations. REVISION SESSIONS A number of revision sessions will be taking place during half term in History, Mathematics and English. Many thanks to members of staff who will be giving up their holiday to ensure the success of our students. Thanks also to parents for supporting these sessions by ensuring that students attend. I must commend all of our students for the superb way in which they have approached the examinations and the preparatory runup to them. Well done. Your success is richly deserved. TWO TIER/THREE TIER - REDDITCH As you may be aware, there is currently significant changes taking place in Redditch in terms of the education of our young people. In addition, there are proposals in the pipeline which will have a considerable impact if they are agreed. At present, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Multi-Academy of St Augustine’s Catholic High School, St Bede’s Catholic Middle School, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic First School and St Peter’s Catholic First School have made the following statement: The Board of Directors of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic MAC have consulted and agreed the following statement in terms of the expected/proposed changes regarding the age range and structure of certain Schools and Academies within Redditch. The existing structure for the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic MAC will remain unchanged. The four schools involved; St Peter's Catholic First School (Academy), Bromsgrove, Our Lady of Mount Carmel First School (Academy), St Bede's Catholic Middle School (Academy) and St Augustine's Catholic High School (Academy), Redditch will continue to work in harmony to give ALL students, from Reception through to Sixth Form, a well-structured and coordinated faith based education. We will of course continue to welcome the large number of students of all faiths and those students of no faith, to our Academy in line with our admissions policy. St Bede's Catholic Middle School and St Augustine's Catholic High School will continue to welcome students from other feeder schools in years five and nine respectively. The Board of Directors is continually monitoring these proposed changes and how they will affect the structure of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic MAC and the education provision within the wider community. We will also continue to work to ensure that we maximize the benefits of all the educational facilities within the area A Christ centred learning community committed to the development of the whole person for all students, and believe that a better, coordinated plan should be proposed involving all schools and wider stakeholders, including parents. If the decision to change is eventually made, it should only happen once a full and fair consultation and investigation has been conducted. This should take place over a reasonable period of time, therefore allowing for the planning and implementation of appropriate infrastructure, teaching facilities and staffing to be put in place. The Board of Directors feels that the over-riding priority for the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Multi Academy is the education and welfare of all the students within our MAC. The Board also recognises its responsibility to include all schools in the area, and encourage any schools that share our values to join us in working together to ensure our belief that all children deserve the best education possible, whatever their background, faith or previous experiences in life. Michael Dean Chair of the Board of Directors Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic MAC We were also represented at the Webheath Consultation Evening on Monday this week and issued this additional statement to those who attended: Statement from the Board of Directors of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Multi Academy with reference to the proposal to change the age range at Webheath First School Academy to a 5-11 Primary School The objective of this statement is to provide parents, carers and all the stakeholders of Webheath First School with information on the position of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic MAC regarding proposals to change the age range. After many meetings to discuss the way forward the Directors of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic MAC have unanimously agreed that we are committed to the three tier system. We recognise the strengths of both systems and focus on harnessing these benefits within our current structure by actively improving the links between partner schools for the benefit of our students. We wish to make it clear that St Augustine's Catholic High School will remain a high school taking students at Year 9. Trinity High School have written to confirm their position is also to stay as a high school. As a result of this decision we also want to make it clear that pupils of a future Webheath Primary School will not have a direct access to St Augustine's Catholic High School or Trinity High School at the end of Year 6. Their main options at that point will be Ridgeway or Tudor Grange, which will be secondary schools, or they will need to transfer to middle school for 2 years before being able to apply to join St Augustine's or Trinity High School in Year 9. We have strengthened the links with the main feeders to St Augustine's Catholic High School, who are adapting their admissions policy to give more children from Walkwood Middle School the opportunity to join our community. St Augustine's Pupil Admissions Number (PAN) for this September (2015) has been increased from 210 to 230 in order to give parents greater choice. Our MAC welcomes all children to our schools from all faiths and those with none as illustrated by the fact that 65% of students joining St Augustine's Catholic High School in September 2015 are from non Catholic families. We are also pleased to inform you that a charter is being developed between St Augustine's Catholic High School and Trinity High School with middle schools currently working on the same approach. The hope is to then agree the same with the first schools. The charter states that our schools will work closely together, uniting with one key goal to provide good, rounded and quality education for our children. If in the future there becomes a need to consider any changes within our current schools, a full consultation with the whole community will take place and the impact across our communities heard. We wish Webheath First School and other schools considering embarking on a new system well, but ask that all options are made clear to Parents and Carers, who should be listened to as they have entrusted us to educate all children within the town of Redditch. Michael Dean, Chair of the Board of Directors Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic MAC In terms of St Augustine’s, we have undertaken the following to make our current position clear: The Principal and the Chair of the Board of Directors have met with Pank Patel (Regional Schools’ Commissioner for the West Midlands) and Karen Lumley MP. We quested and were granted a further meeting with the other three High Schools in Redditch in the near future to discuss the many points. We have continued to strengthen our middle school links with St Bede’s and Walkwood by working collaboratively on Years 7 and 8 (and on other areas) to ensure that cohesion and common expectations are secured. This will bring enormous benefits to all students. Meeting attended by Michael Dean, Chair of Board of We have worked to ensure that the Directors, Mr Quinn, Karen Lumley MP, Pank Patel transition links are positive and and Rob Wye. engaging by offering a Pathways Evening on Thursday, 11th June 2015 for our new cohort of Year 9 students and by offering a summer school during the school holidays 20th - 23rd July 2015 inclusive. We have liaised with Trinity High School to establish a charter of agreement between the two schools (subject to Academy Representative approval) to give parents in Redditch a clear and uncomplicated pathway through the middle to high school system in the future years. We have ensured that any proposed changes to admissions, status of the school and pupil numbers will be Page 2 transparent, open and fundamentally for the benefit of the community we serve and to secure for the first 40 years in Redditch. YEAR 10 PARENTS’ EVENING A very well attended Year 10 Parents’ Evening took place yesterday. Many thanks to all parents who attended this important event. YEAR 9 ASSESSMENT FORTNIGHT After half term our Year 9 students will embark upon their assessment two week period. This is an essential marker to show where students are currently situated in their studies.I wish them the best of luck with these examinations. YEAR 10 ASSESSMENT FORTNIGHT The Year 10 assessments commence on Monday, 8tgh June 2015 for two weeks. Again, ensure that you revise well and get plenty of rest throughout the examination period. STUDENTS JOINING ST AUGUSTINE’S CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL IN SEPTEMBER 2015 TRANSITION EVENING THURSDAY, 11th JUNE 2015 A further reminder to parents and students who are transferring to us from our feeder Middle Schools in September, they are cordially invited to St Augustine’s on Thursday, 11th June 2015 between 5.00pm - 8.00pm for the Year 8 to Year 9 Transition Evening. You should have by now received, via your middle school, a booklet indicating the GCSE and Vocational subjects on offer to students next year. FAREWELL We say a fond farewell to a long serving member of staff. Mr Freeman, our litter collector, will be retiring after more than nine years service today. We wish Mr Freeman a long and healthy retirement. WELCOME We welcome a new member of staff to our Pastoral Team after half term. Mrs Thomas joins us as a Pastoral Administrator. HALF TERM I wish you all a restful half term holiday. To those students preparing for examinations, eat well, get plenty of rest and remember that these are just a few weeks in your lives when 100% effort has to be put in. Mr Quinn, Principal CATHOLICITY OF THE SCHOOL RAISING MONEY FOR NEPAL As was reported in last week’s Newsletter, we held day of fundraising on 7th May to support the millions who are affected and in desperate need of food, shelter, water, sanitation and medical supplies. A fantastic £1,349.25p was raised through donations and the various events which took place. As ever, our students were exceptionally generous with their time, money and ideas and showed a genuine concern and compassion for the people of Nepal, who have been left devastated by the earthquake. A particular well done goes to Year 9 for their outstanding contributions and especially to 9PQ for the great success in their sponsored silence. This money will help to bring food, water and shelter to some of the 8 million people affected by the natural disaster and we keep them in our continued thoughts and prayers as they begin to try to rebuild their homes, lives and communities. The day provided us with an opportunity to deepen our understanding of Diversity the values of cultural diversity and to learn to live together better. The Spiritual Assembly Life Student Council marked the event by planning and delivering a series of assemblies to Year 9 and 10, which highlighted the importance of cultural diversity and recommended some practical ideas on how everyone can celebrate World Day for Cultural Diversity. The purpose of this day is to provide us with an opportunity to deepen our understanding of different cultures and help us to build a more inclusive society in which cooperation and mutual respect are highly valued. A special thanks goes to Laura Kelly, Briony Read, Millie Henderson-Purvis, Emily Read, Peter Nicols, Tom Saunders and Sam Bevan for planning an excellent assembly and delivering it with passion and enthusiasm. Ten simple things YOU can do to celebrate the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development Visit an art exhibit or a museum dedicated to other cultures. Invite a family or people in the neighborhood from another culture or religion to share a meal with you and exchange views on life. Rent a film or read a book from another country or religion than your own. Invite people from a different culture to share your customs. Read about the great thinkers of other cultures than yours (eg Confucius, Socrates, Avicenna, Ibn Khaldun, Aristotle, Ganesh, Rumi). Go next week-end to visit a place of worship different than yours and participate in the celebration. Play the “stereotypes game.” Stick a post-it on your forehead with the name of a country. Ask people to tell you stereotypes associated with people from that country. You win if you find out where you are from. Learn about traditional celebrations from other cultures; learn more about Hanukkah or Ramadan or about amazing celebrations of New Year’s Eve in Spain or Qingming festival in China. Spread your own culture around the world through our Facebook page and learn about other cultures. Explore music of a different culture. There are thousands of things that you can do, are you taking part in it? PENTECOST Like Easter, Pentecost is a moveable feast. Calculating the date of Pentecost is simple enough: Take the date of Easter in any given year, and add seven weeks to it. But wait a second—isn't Pentecost 50 days after Easter? And don't seven weeks add up to only 49 days? Yes and yes. In referring to Pentecost as 50 days after Easter, Christians follow the Jewish custom of including the first day in the count. It's the same principle behind the claim that Christ rose from the dead on the third day—we start the count with Good Friday, so Holy Saturday is the second day, and Easter Sunday is the third. The Ascension of Our Lord, too, is calculated by counting Easter Sunday as the first day. So while we today would say that Ascension falls 39 days after Easter, the Catholic Church calls it the 40th day. And then there are ten more days from Ascension to Pentecost (the time that we're in right now, when many Catholics pray the Novena to the Holy Ghost). Luckily, you don't need to keep all of this in mind in order to figure out the date of Pentecost in any given year. In fact, you don't even need to know the date of Easter. All you have to do is bookmark When Is Pentecost? There, you will find the date of Pentecost in 2015 and in future years, as well as links to articles explaining moveable feasts and how the date of Easter is calculated, and everything you need to know about Pentecost in the Catholic Church. SUNDAY 31ST MAY:TRINITY SUNDAY This date, which is celebrated a week after Pentecost Sunday, is in honour of a key Christian teaching: the belief in the Holy Trinity. The Holy Trinity is the principle that God has one nature but is made up of three aspects: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, which Christians acknowledge each time they bless themselves. Priests will wear white during Mass as a symbol of purity and holiness. The shamrock is often used to explain the idea of the Trinity because it shows how the three leaves are part of one plant as the three aspects of God are part of one Supreme Being. On this day, we pray: Father, You sent your Word to bring us truth and Your Spirit to make us holy. Through them we come to know the mystery of Your life. Help us to worship You, one God in three Persons, by proclaiming and living our faith in You. We ask you this, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, true and living, for ever and ever. Amen. Mrs O'Connor Page 4 PASTORAL MATTERS STRANGERS ONLINE We have recently been made aware of a male seemingly from Korea who has been sending friend requests on Facebook to some of our students. Although this person has not actually committed an offence we have notified the local police who are keeping an eye on the situation. Can I ask that all parents and carers take a keen interest in their child's online activity and question those friends you have not heard of. Facebook allows you to limit who can send you friend requests. Applying the limitation will keep those strangers desperate to connect with you out of trouble. From the Friend Requests menu in the top right, click Settings and choose Friends of Friends from the drop-down menu Alternatively, open Privacy Shortcuts from the top right (next to Home button), expand Who can contact me? and choose Friends of Friends under Who can send me friend requests? It's exciting to see a Friend Request at the top of your Facebook page. You're likely to accept Friend Requests without thinking twice, especially if it's a friend or a name you recognise. You may even be thinking that there's no real harm in accepting all Friend Requests that come your way. Having more friends means you're more popular…right? What you may not know is that with name, birth date, education, and work history available online, it's relatively easy for anyone to create a duplicate of any existing user. Watch out, as cybercriminals could potentially be impersonating you or someone you know for the sole purpose of duping you and your friends! Remember Facebook wants you to add only people you know in real life. If you are concerned about your child's online activity please do not hesitate to contact the pastoral team. Ms Fletcher (Assistant Principal) [email protected] PUNCTUALITY Punctuality- Arriving to School on time There is a clear link between attendance and attainment; the more time a pupil spends in school the more likely they are to improve their opportunity to fulfil their potential. Being frequently late for school adds up to lost learning: Arriving 5 minutes late every day adds up to over 3 days lost each day. Arriving 15 minutes late every day is the same as being absent for 2 weeks a year. Arriving 30 minutes late every day is the same as being absent for 19 days a year. If your child attends school they are more likely to succeed. Information for parents/guardians Page 5 Being on time is a good thing! Mrs Farr PE MATTERS SUPER SIXES & DISTRICT ATHLETICS TRIAL Well done to all students who took part in horrendous conditions on Tuesday afternoon in the super six athletics competition and the district athletics trials at the abbey stadium. The condition of the track and other surfaces, although initially acceptable, deteriorated. Ultimately, the conditions became too dangerous to continue and the event had to be called off half way through. County selection in taking place today and personal bests have had to be submitted for all those students who did not get to compete on the day. These will be considered along with those students who did manage to compete. Successful students will receive a letter after half term with further details of the county athletics competition which is taking place on Saturday, 13th June - good luck to all! Thanks to all parents/carers who came along to support their children at this event. The winners of the super six athletics competition will go on to represent Redditch at the level 3 version oft he competition on Tuesday, 23rd June at Bromsgrove School- fingers crossed! GCSE PE The GCSE PE students have now completed their final exam - well done to all students and see you on results day! JOSH PEARSON UPDATE Well done to Josh Pearson, who competed in the H&WSAA County combined athletics competition in Stourport on Wednesday. PE EXTRA CURRICULUM TIMETABLE There will be a new PE extra curricular timetable coming out for after half term. Please keep an eye out for it in form rooms, on our website and outside the PE office. A copy will be sent home with the next newsletter. ROUNDERS The week after half term on Wednesday, 3rd June the Year 9 girls will be competing in a rounders tournament to decide on which school will be representing Redditch at the Sainsbury’s summer Worcestershire school games on Tuesday, 23rd June 2015. It is being held at St Augustine’s and it would be lovely to have parents/carers coming along to support us! Pick up time to be confirmed after half term when we know how many schools are attending. However, it is likely to be around 5.30pm from St Augustine’s. SPORTS AWARDS EVENING 2015 Our annual Sports Award Evening takes place on Thursday, 2nd July 2015. This year we have extended the celebrations to include an Art Exhibition. This is an opportunity to showcase the unique talent that exists at St Augustine's Catholic High School in both Sport and Art. The evening commences at 5.00pm with refreshments in the dining hall, co-ordinated by Art Students. Sports award winning students and their guests will proceed to the Sports Hall for their awards presentations at 6.00pm. Guests and Page 6 students attending the Art Exhibition only are welcome to continue viewing the Artwork until 6.30pm. Those students, who are involved in demonstrations and hosting during the evening, will be required in school from 5.00pm in order to prepare for the event. Mrs Chinn STUDENT LEADERSHIP MATTERS DUKE OF EDINBURGH As you know, we introduced the Duke of Edinburgh award at the start of the spring term. Please find below an account of progress so far: 21students commenced the Duke of Edinburgh award in December 2014. Six months on and most of us have now almost completed our three sections - physical, volunteering and skills. This has given us the opportunity to try loads of new activities eg for our physical section - archery, Krav Maga, ballet and the gym; for volunteering - working with middle schools in extra curricular activities (cooking club and drama), charity work, helping out with the school radio and even fostering hedgehogs; for skills - playing musical instruments and taking part in sports clubs. We are now preparing for the actual expedition. The first meeting took place this week where we covered all of the vital points concerning when we would be walking. The aim of the meeting was to learn how to keep safe and stick to the Country Code whilst on the expedition. We discussed being attentive when crossing roads and making sure that gates are closed behind us. We then covered first aid. Mr Morris demonstrated at length how to clean a wound and apply a plaster/bandage in the correct way. It was very interesting, especially when we were given graphic details on how a wound would become infected if we didn’t dab it using the correct dabbing motion! We discussed the two most likely problems that may occur whilst travelling - getting lost and blisters! For the former, we have our whistles and were assured that Mr Mill would only be five minutes away and could run very fast; for the latter, we were advised not to pop blisters! Many thanks to Mr Mill and Mr Morris for their preparatory advice. Niamh Collins Scientist of the Week! Enhanced Achievement This week’s ‘Scientist of the week’ goes to Behram Mohammad in 9Y1. Behram has been chosen for scientist of the week because of his enthusiasm for science, which is fantastic to see! Throughout the year Behram’s positive attitude and curiosity has made him stand out from the crowd. Behram is a hard worker with a great attitude; willing to help others whenever needed. Well done Behram, keep up the good work! We got up early this morning with suitcases packed, as we all met at Werner-von-Siemens Realschule at 7.45am.We set off on the coach to Frankfurt airport at 8am, having loaded our luggage and said goodbye to our families. Once we had arrived, we checked in our luggage, received our boarding cards and then went through Passport Control. Soon afterwards we boarded the bus from the terminal to our plane and excitedly took our seats on board. Once we had arrived at Birmingham we needed to wait a long time at Passport Control before we could collect our bags. Finally we boarded our coach which took us directly to St Augustine's Catholic High School. There we were warmly greeted by our host families and taken “home.“ At home we got to know our host families and unpacked our suitacses. Finally several of us went to the park to play football or basketball and others walked their host family's dogs. After dinner we went to bed so we would be ready for the next day.Today was lovely as we finally set off and flew to England. On Sunday we went to Drayton Manor. Firstly we went on the pirate ship “Pandemonium“ which went so high that we felt like we were going to fall! Then we went to „”G Force“, whose several, high loop the loops put several people off! Fortunately they were then able to look after all of our bags! After visiting “Maelstrom“ and several other rides, we stopped for some pizza and chips. Then we set off to the water rides. After getting slightly wet on the river boat, we then got soaked on the wild water ride. Later we went on the scooters, which was good fun. For the last part of the day, we split into groups to visit the rides we particularly enjoyed. Then our host parents collected us and took us home, where we could dress up ready for the welcome party! At 7pm we joined back together at the party, where firstly we played an English game, similar to baseball (rounders), in the garden. We played in two teams, English versus Germans. (The Germans won ;) ) Then we ate, danced and took lots of group photos. The party gave everyone the chance to get to know the other exchange partners. Because the weather was good, we were able to spend the evening outdoors. At 11pm we were collected again by our host parents and taken home, each with a piece of party cake! We talked about the party a lot that night. Because of the Bank Holiday, we didn't need to go to school and so we had time to enjoy a typical “English Breakfast.“ At midday we set off on our planned trip to Ragley Hall, Park and Gardens. It was a beautiful place for a family day out.Whilst the parents prepared the picnic, we explored the park. There was boating on the lake, pony rides in the woods and so much more. It is a very popular location, there was something for all ages. After our picnic, we had plenty of energy to play rounders and cricket with all of the families. Everyone had great fun, even the families' dogs. At 5.30pm we slowly made our way home. It was an excellent day, which we shall never forget. We were really lucky with the weather again today! On Tuesday we went to Warwick Castle where we explored the rooms in the castle along with the towers and castle walls in small groups. There were waxwork figures of people who used to live there and also a display by birds of prey in the grounds. At the end of our visit we visited the Warwick Dungeon, which was really gruesome! We got up between 7 and 8am on Wednesday so we could meet in the school canteen at 9am. Once everyone had arrived, including the pupil who had missed their bus, we set off on the coach to Birmingham. Firstly we visited Birmingham City Museum and then went on to the Bull Ring, where we enjoyed a few hours to shop and look around. We returned to st Augustine's at 3.30pm and met up with our exchange partners again. After school we spent time with our exchange partners, going to a football final, bowling or to the cinema. Page 9 On Thursday 7th May we met in the school canteen and then made our way to Anne Hathaway's Cottage, where Shakespeare's late wife grew up. Anne was born in 1556 and at the age of 26 married the 18 year old Shakespeare. The cottage showed the life of several generations of the Hathaway family. Firstly we enjoyed an interesting introductory talk, which informed us about life in the 16th century, for example where the expression „it's raining cats and dogs“ came from. (Cats and dogs were regularly sent onto the thatched roofs to catch vermin living in the thatch and then slid off the roofs in the rain onto the heads of any passers by!) We then learnt how people found partners for marriage. Afterwards we travelled into Stratford and visited Shakespeare's Birthplace. Here we watched a short video about the life of Shakespeare and then explored the house, learning how Shakespeare's father made gloves and sold them to passers by through the front window. We tried on various styles of glove. Having looked around all of the house, we joined in with the theatre group's mini production of scenes from Shakespeare's plays in the pretty garden. After all of this culture, we spent a couple of hours in groups shopping and taking photos before returning to Redditch. In the evening, we met up and went to eat a curry in an Indian restaurant. This was something new for several of us.We enjoyed another evening all together and we were all very excited about the following day. Our trip to London... On the penultimate day of our trip, 8th May, we visited the capital city, London. It was particularly good that our English partners accompanied us on this trip. This was the day we had looked forward to the most. The coach journey took about 3 hours and we had great fun with our English friends during the journey. Firstly we took the tube to St James' Park and crossed the park to see Buckingham Palace. We took many photos there. There were lots of people standing at the gates as the newly elected David Cameron was driven out of the Palace, having visited the Queen. On our walking tour of London, we saw Big Ben and Houses of Parliament. We walked past Downing Street, trying to catch a glimpse of Number 10 and at Trafalgar Square, in front of the National Gallery, we split into two groups. One group went to Covent Garden and the other, by tube, to Camden Market. There we had just under one hour of free time, which we really enjoyed. Finally we travelled back to the Natural History Museum and spent the remaining time in the museum before our coach departed. In the evening we were collected by our host parents at school. Then there was a big farewell party at Charlotte's house, which we all really enjoyed. On Saturday we were set to depart. In the morning several students went to the town centre to spend their last, remaining pounds on souvenirs. Others packed their cases. At 3pm we all met back at school with our host families, ready to say goodbye. The farewells were very tearful and heartfelt! At Birmingham airport there was a small problem. However after we had all gone through security, there were 15 minutes to look quickly at the shops. Barely having arrived at the gate, we were able to board the plane. After the plane doors had been closed, we sat in our designated seats. As there were only 40 seats occupied, we were able to all sit where we wanted. After a somewhat turbulent flight, we were greeted by rain in Frankfurt. When all of our luggage was loaded onto the coach, we were driven home via.Würzburg ... already our time in England was over! Mrs Rose, Mr Connolly, Mr Feser and Mrs Johannes would like to again take the opportunity to thank all of our students and their families for all of their hard work in giving the German students such a fantastic and memorable stay in England. We are really looking forward to our return visit to Bad Neustadt on 4th July. Looking forward to the 134th FA Cup Final on 30th May? 736 teams entered this year's competition, hoping to win the trophy and the £1.8 million prize money. £15.1 million in prize money will have been paid out in total. 15 teams entered the first competition in 1871. Excluding replays, how many ties have been concluded so far? Aston Villa have been drawn at home in every “tie” this season, including being classed as the “home” side in both the semi-finals and the final itself. What is the probability of this happening? ANSWERS TO MR DEAKIN BY WEDNESDAY, 3rd June 2015 Mr Deakin ANSWER TO LAST WEEK’S CONUNDRUM FOUR NUMBERS ARE WRITTEN IN A ROW Four numbers are written in a row. The mean of the first two is 2, the mean of the middle two is 5.5, the mean of the last two is 5. FIND THE MEAN OF THE FIRST AND LAST NUMBERS. Some possible solutions.... The numbers could be : 1, 3, 8, 2 because the mean of 1 and 3 is 2, the mean of 2 and 9 is 5.5 and the mean of 8 and 2 is 5 Other possibilities: If duplicates allowed: 2, 2, 9, 1 If zero allowed: 0, 4, 7, 3 If negatives allowed: 4, 0, 11, -1 In fact: any 4 numbers where the first pair add up to 4, the middle pair add up to 11, and the last pair add up to 10. So the mean of the first and the last is in all cases 1.5 Mr Deakin LITERACY MATTERS QUOTES FOR THE WEEK ‘Why fit in when you were born to standout!'
