Who knows the world better than those who work
for an airline? We asked flight attendants, pilots
and ground crews for inside information on their
favourite destinations. This time, Lauda Air Marketing Executive Michael Uher tells us how to get the
most out of the Dominican Republic.

ou’ve just returned from Punta Cana.
hat Ihnen dort am besten gefallen?
Die herrlichen Strände und das kristallklare Wasser, aber
auch die unendliche Freundlichkeit der Leute dort.
02 Was muss man unbedingt gesehen haben?
Ein Besuch in der Hauptstadt Santo Domingo ist ein unbedingtes Muss. Die Stadt gilt als die „älteste europäische Stadt in der Neuen Welt“, vor allem die Altstadt mit
den vielen Kolonialbauten, der mächtigen Kathedrale und
dem markanten Kolumbus-Denkmal ist in jedem Fall einen Besuch wert. Zigarrenfans sollten auch eine der
Plantagen besucht haben.
03 Welches ist Ihr Lieblingslokal – und was
essen Sie dort?
Ein Abendessen im Restaurant Jellyfish (Carretera Bavaro, Punta Cana, T +1-809-868-3040) ist ein tolles Erlebnis! Großartiges Seafood, landestypisch zubereitet,
schöne Atmosphäre, freundlicher Service, eine beeindruckende Aussicht über das Meer und traumhafte Strandlage. Unbedingt reservieren.

ohin geht man am Abend?
Die pompöseste Unterhaltung wird in den Hotelanlagen
selbst geboten. Nach einer professionellen Abendshow
ist ein Besuch in der Disco Pacha im Riu Resort ebenfalls ein Muss. Hier treffen sich Besucher wie Einheimische, um bei Merengue-Klängen und Cocktails Party zu
feiern. An manchen Abenden gibt es Livekonzerte von lokalen Bands. In kleinen Bars kann man immer wieder in
kleine, spontane Partys einheimischer Leute eintauchen
(einfach die Augen weit offen halten – es lohnt sich!).

ie besten Einkaufsmöglichkeiten?
In der Calle Caribeña im Riu Resort gibt es einige entzückende Geschäfte, wo man Souvenirs, aber auch Zigarren und Rum kaufen kann. Außerhalb der Hotelanlagen

02 What’s the one thing that all visitors to
Punta Cana should see?
A visit to the capital, Santo Domingo, is a must. The city is
known as the “oldest European city in the New World,” and
the old town, with its colonial buildings, imposing
Cathedral and striking Columbus Memorial particularly
worth a look. Cigar aficionados should also try to get to
one of the plantations.
03 Where should you go to get a good meal,
and what would you recommend?
Dinner at the Jellyfish restaurant (Carretera Bavaro, Punta
Cana, T. +1-809-868-3040) is a terrific experience! The fish
and seafood, prepared according to local recipes, are
incredible and the atmosphere lovely, with friendly service, an
impressive view out across the sea and great beachside
location. Always be sure to reserve in advance.
04 Where should you head for in the evening?
The most ostentatious entertainment is offered in the hotel
complexes themselves. After a professional evening show,
a visit to the Pacha disco in the Riu Resort is also a must:
this is a meeting point for visitors and locals like, and great
for partying to merengue sounds and cocktails. If you’re
lucky you’ll also catch a live concert by a local band. You
can often join in spontaneous small parties thrown by locals in the small bars – just keep your eyes open – you
won’t be sorry you did!
05 Where can you find good shopping?
There are some lovely stores in Calle Caribeña in the Riu
Resort, where you can find not just souvenirs, but also cigars and rum. Although opportunities for shopping outside >>

sind die Einkaufsmöglichkeiten meiner Ansicht nach etwas limitiert, in den größeren Städten – allen voran natürlich die Hauptstadt Santo Domingo – kann man aber
durchaus sehr gut und preiswert einkaufen. Handeln
kann manchmal den Preis drücken!

as haben Sie sich in Punta Cana gekauft?
Das steht außer Frage: eine Schachtel Davidoff Aniversario No. 1 sowie Davidoff Special „C“ – verraten Sie
das aber nicht dem Zoll! Sehr nett sind auch die typisch
karibischen bunten Bilder, die es in der Dominikanischen
Republik an allen Straßenecken zu kaufen gibt. Die Bilder stammen zumeist von Künstlern aus Haiti und zeigen
vor allem Alltagsszenen aus der Karibik.

aben Sie einen Geheimtipp?
Walbeobachtungen in der Bucht von Samana! Ein Muss,
allerdings nur möglich zwischen Jänner und März, wenn
die Buckelwale aus den kalten Gewässern Grönlands in
die Karibik kommen. Ein supertolles Erlebnis!

enn man Zeit für einen Ausflug hat, wohin
sollte man?
Neben der Hauptstadt Santo Domingo, die man unbedingt besuchen sollte, ist ein Besuch im Künstlerdorf
Altos de Chavon ein lohnenswertes Ausflugsziel. Das
Dorf liegt oberhalb des Chavon-Flusses auf einer Anhöhe
mit großartigem Ausblick und wurde Ende der 1970erJahre im Stil eines italienischen Dorfes aus dem 16. Jh.
gebaut. In den verwinkelten Gassen und Häusern befinden
sich heute Ateliers von Künstlern, Galerien, Geschäfte
und natürlich auch Restaurants. Im Amphitheater finden
regelmäßig Konzerte statt, hier sind u. a. auch schon
Jennifer Lopez und Ricky Martin aufgetreten.
09 Gibt es etwas, Was man unbedingt vermeiden sollte?
Als Mitteleuropäer selbst mit dem Auto zu fahren würde
ich nach Möglichkeit vermeiden. Die Straßen sind sehr
schmal, die Beschilderung abseits der Hauptstraßen
sehr schlecht, der Fahrstil der Einheimischen für uns
ungewohnt. Daher in jedem Fall ratsam, eher einen
Wagen mit Fahrer anzumieten oder einen geführten
Ausflug mit dem Reiseveranstalter mitmachen.

always find something interesting at the right price in the
larger cities – the best being in the capital, Santo Domingo, as you would expect. Sometimes you can even bargain
the price down a little!

hat did you buy in Punta Cana?
No question about that one: a box of Davidoff Aniversario
No. 1 and Davidoff Special “C” – but don’t tell customs!
The colourful, typically Caribbean pictures that you can
buy on street corners throughout the Dominican Republic
are also very nice. The paintings are usually by artists
from Haiti, and show everyday scenes from the
Caribbean.

ny insider tips for us?
Go whale watching in the Bay of Samaná! An absolute
must, although only possible between January and March,
when the humpback whales head for the Caribbean from
the cold waters of Greenland. An amazing experience!
08 If there’s time for an excursion, what
should it be?
Apart from Santo Domingo, which you should see at all
costs, the artists’ village at Altos de Chavón is a rewarding destination and thoroughly worth a visit. The village is
situated above the Chavón River, on a hill with a breathtaking view, and was built at the end of the 1970s in the
style of an Italian sixteenth-century village. Its winding alleyways and houses are home to ateliers of artists, galleries, stores and, of course, restaurants. Concerts are regularly staged in the Amphitheatre – Jennifer Lopez and Ricky
Martin are just two of the stars to have appeared there in
recent years.
09 Is there anything you should probably
avoid?
As a central European, I would probably avoid driving a
car by myself. The roads are extremely narrow, the road
signs away from the main roads are terrible and the
locals’ driving style takes some getting used to. For all
these reasons, I would advise visitors either to rent a car
with a driver or to join a guided excursion with one of the
tour operators.
